N w ?r M +N P e iP nQ As March is closing, it’s a pleasure to see the Membership Drive being encouraged and supported by our membership. We have already accepted 17 new Regular Members, 4 Special Members, 3 Social Members and 3 NonResident Golf & Tennis Members, and we will continue offering the $2,000 Regular Members initiation fee through the end of June. When this new Membership Drive began on March 1st, the Club was at 410 Regular Members…now at 425 in a short 23 days. Reaching our limit of 455 would be a nice goal to obtain by the end of June when this Membership Drive ends and the initiation fee returns to $5,000. I sincerely thank every sponsoring member for making this year’s Membership Drive so successful. I began looking back at the journey of the Club for the past 10 years and found these facts… In 2005, the Club showed cash of $189,740 and debt from the Clubhouse loan of $279,873. Today, the Club shows cash of $588,535 and $0 debt. In 2005, we had 441 Regular Members and 5 Special members (under 36 years of age) for a total of 446 golfing members. Today, we have 423 (and climbing) Regular Members and 51 Special Members (under 36 years of age) for a total of 474 golfing members. The Club’s $1 million Clubhouse loan from 1998 was paid-in-full in 2007 making us “debt free”. In 2008, we built 2 beautiful golf course restrooms for $163,000 and replaced all the outdoor pool furniture. In the spring of 2009, we replaced the asphalt and surfacing of the tennis courts for $98,000. Six months later, the membership gave its blessing to install a state-of-art irrigation system for the golf course for $1.2 million where a loan of $505,000 was obtained. Three years later the Club was once again debt free. We have continued to replace and add new equipment needed to maintain and improve our golf course. The golf course has seen the rebuild of 6 tees, 8 bunkers and 3 new bunkers. The members are enjoying the unlimited use of their 3rd fleet of 60 leased golf carts. The chairs of the Fairway Room, Dining Room and Banquet Rooms have all been reupholstered and new Lounge chairs were purchased in 2012. Last year we installed a much needed new kitchen floor for $98,000, finished our 2nd year of laying new concrete cart paths for $80,000 and asphalted the Turf Care Center’s parking lot for $53,000. The tree program is now nearly complete and has been instrumental in adding to the beauty and future playability of our golf course for generations to come. All these projects, purchases and repayment of the two loans have been accomplished without ever asking or needing a membership assessment. I am proud to be a member and your President as “we the Board” continue to maintain and improve the Walla Walla Country Club for all members in a fiscally sound manner. The Club’s Standing Committees are currently engaged in incorporating new thoughts and programs to improve membership satisfaction. Already on the Social Calendar is the “Ten Cent Treasure” Dinner Theater, an “Evening Fashion Show” and a 4-week long “Kid’s Camp” complete with a wide array of activities and games to make any child or grandchild beg to attend! I hope to see all members enjoying themselves at the Club this year and don’t forget that all members can still enjoy a little “March Madness” at the Club during March. Every member of the Club may entertain a guest(s) on the golf course during March for “free”… that’s right… no green fee or cart fee for all guests in March! Sincerely, Don Harwood, President

G < r/S M3naT r R p W It’s hard to believe a quarter of the new year is nearly behind us already, but this great golfing weather we’ve been blessed with makes it feel like May already! The Membership Drive of 2015 is already responsible for gaining 17 Regular Members in the first 23 days of March…plus 4 Special Members, 3 Social Members and 3 Non-Resident Golf & Tennis. The membership has been doing an excellent job in encouraging their friends and relatives to join the Club during these months of March through June when the initiation fee is set at $2,000. Remember that on July 1st the initiation fee returns to $5,000, so encourage any prospective members to apply for membership before July 1st! Our “March Madness” which allows all guests to play for “free” during the entire month of March has been a big hit to all ours guests and members alike…remember, all guests play for “free” during March as long as they play with a member! Easter Sunday, April 5th, is approaching quickly so don’t forget to call in your reservations for our very popular “Easter Brunch Buffet”. We take up to 150 reservations on the hour from 10:00 a.m. through 2:00 p.m… enough time to comfortably serve 600 members and guests! The big draw is always the “Children’s Easter Egg Hunt” wher e the Easter Bunny hides his candy and 3 special Golden Eggs for the 1:00 p.m. “Easter Egg Hunt”…and as always, don’t show up late for the egg hunt as the children are excellent runners!! Chef Mike’s tenth “Chef’s Table” presented on March 6th was exquisite! Ask anyone who attended and I’m sure they will agree. As Al Rose said, “that was the best fillet I’ve ever had and the quail was to die for!” All members need to experience a “Chef’s Table” at some point as the food and friendship is wonderful. We limit each “Chef’s Table” to the first 24 reservations, so don’t wait till it’s too late. We already have some reservations for both the August 7th and November 6th “Chef’s Tables”. These are the only two remaining dates left this year to experience a very, very special dinner…and part of the fun is not knowing what Chef Mike is creating right before your eyes! The Women’s Board is presenting an “Evening Fashion Show” on Friday, April 17th beginning at 7:00 p.m. They are bringing out the runway lights and red carpet to celebrate 7 different area stores. A portion of the ticket proceeds will go to support the local YWCA. So, ladies, call your BFFs and plan on having some fun while supporting a good cause! The Club is highlighting the “Seafood Buffet” Friday, April 24th. This is a favorite of many members as they watch and wait for the smorgasbord buffet-of-fish! For you individuals who aren’t seafood lovers, Chef Mike always offers beef and chicken and many sides that don’t contain seafood so you can join your seafoodlovers at the Club! The a la carte service for the dinner menu where the soup or salad is no longer included in the meal price is taking place for several reasons. As food costs continue to increase, we elected to implement a la carte service rather than raise entrée prices as not everyone requests soup or salad. And with fewer side salads ordered, the pantry person has the time to prepare a seasonal composed salad for those requesting a salad. Also, many comments have been heard that the size of the entrée is too large, so no soup/salad decreases the overall meal size. Chef Mike hit a “home-run” with his “Pot Roast, potatoes and gravy, veggies and buttermilk biscuits” that was requested as the menu for the recent “Ten Cent Treasure”! Not only was the menu a big hit, the storyteller, Mr. Jay Frank, did a wonderful job with his presentation. Kathy Mauer and the Women’s Board all receive a big “thank you” for a great event that was sold out!! Jeffrey C. Thomas, General Manager

Washington Junior Golf Association We encourage voluntary Donations to the Washington Junior Golf Association and hope every member can or will contribute... Watch for your donation form with your next statement! “What’s good for golf is good for the Walla Walla Country Club!” Thank You in advance for you Donations!

With great March weather the golf course is in great shape and we already seem to be in full swing. Just remember, warm clear days mean cold clear nights, so early morning frost is still a possibility for the next couple weeks. We are now mowing almost on a daily basis as the grass has taken off and areas that were damaged from the winter are beginning to recover. We will aerate greens Monday April 6th with the course being closed the entire day. We will be using the ¼ inch “quad” tine that will not damage the putting surface severely and will allow for the greens to recover very quickly. We will also be aerating tees and approaches and topdressing those areas as well. We will be edging bunkers and adding/moving sand in all the bunkers. This should be complete by the end of March. We lost some sand from blowing which is apparent by looking at the edges of the bunkers. Most have adequate sand levels but it needs to be moved throughout the bunker. We will add sand where needed. There are a couple bunkers that will have the bunker faces reworked as the sand build-up has caused these areas to not be very stable. We will be repairing the right bunker on #1 and the left bunker on #8 to start with. Once again we will be verticutting and rolling fairways this spring. The roller was very successful in smoothing out the fairways allowing for a better cut. The verticutting removes dead turf tissue and opens the canopy for oxygen intake and overall turf health. You may have noticed walk strips mown from tees to the start of the fairways. These are cut at fairway height and will be mowed when fairways are mowed. Getting these strips established in early spring will allow for the turf to adjust to the extreme height change. The last 2 silver maples were removed behind #3 green along Plaza Way. These trees were rotten inside just like the other 3 that were removed last year. We are discussing ideas on replacement to reduce road noise. The staff also spent February and March pruning trees throughout the course. We were also able to remove quite a few “hangers”. Please don’t hesitate to let myself know if any limbs are spotted that need to be removed. The Green Ash on the north side of the creek on #7 has been selected for removal as it does not affect either #2 or #7 hole, but does cause issues with playability due to cart traffic and turf quality. By removing this tree we will be able to disperse cart traffic much better and also establish turf to improve overall course playability and aesthetics. Please take a look and consult myself and/or a Board Member if you have any concerns or questions. The lake level was dropped a couple weeks ago in order to rake all the leaves from the edge and also to determine the amount of sediment that has developed over the last year and a half. Once the leaves were removed, the lake was refilled to its normal levels. Please refrain from entering the lake when it is drawn down as the liner is very thin and can easily tear. Also, the liner is very slick and one can fall very easily and it is extremely difficult to regain balance and get out of the water. Great weather means lots of golfers. Please remember to repair ball marks on the greens and replace divots or use the sand and seed containers whenever possible. Rake bunkers after use and remember to place rakes outside the bunker. Avoid exiting bunkers from the face side as these areas can collapse from the sand build up. Please use cart paths whenever possible and stay on paths around greens and tees. We will once again paint the white line in front of approaches to designate where carts can go. Thank you for your help in trying to keep your golf course in the best shape. Now is the right time to prepare your yard for the upcoming year. Pre-emergent crab grass control should be applied before April 15th and if you were not able to fertilize last fall, now would be a great time to “nudge” your turf to help recover from the winter. Enjoy the great weather and I will see you on the course! Jeff Blanc, CGCS

IMPORTANT Changes in Tee Times this Spring The Golf Committee and Board have agreed to alter Saturday tee times for a trial period of April through May. The tee times on Saturdays will run from 7:00 am until 7:00 pm off the number one tee only with “Men's Day” from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Members may play before and after “Men's Day” but keep in mind, if you are a slower player, please avoid the early morning times as it will slow down the golf course for the entire day. The tee will be monitored and those members who do not complete nine holes in under 2 hours will be asked to speed up or find a time more suitable to their play. This is a trial period for the months of April and May and will be re-evaluated in June. If you need help on making a tee time or finding a tee time best for you, please call the golf shop as we’ll be happy to help you. Parents with small children or young juniors or beginning golfers don't forget about Sunday afternoon tee times from 2:00-5:00 pm to play. This time is blocked off just for your use.

Bocce Ball and Bean-Bag Toss “Bocce Ball” and “Bean-Bag-Toss”… anyone interested?! It would be great to start a Couples’ League of both Bocce Ball and Bean-Bag-Toss! These games can easily be played on the Blue Tee on #10, making it very convenient to enjoy an hors d’oeuvre and a glass of wine! And if these catch on, multiple sets can be ordered and played by members on an evening basis. Another great area for playing these games would be around the “chipping green” by the pool. Maybe we can warp this into a season ending “tournament”... just think…the “Bocce Ball” and “Bean-Bag-Toss” Champions of the Year are ???!!!

“Why Tai Chi?” It is an enjoyable exercise with robust evidence showing reduced risk of falls for older adults, and it improves almost all aspects of health. The Healthy Body: Studies have shown tai chi improves muscle strength, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness and balance. The Healthy Mind: It is equally important to have a healthy mind as well as a healthy body. Older adults who are more confident in their balance have less chance of falling! Tai Chi, a mind body exercise, improves mental focus and confidence. It quiets and relaxes the mind and is often referred to as moving meditation. The Scientific Evidence: The Gillespie review has analyzed 111 scientific papers and found Tai Chi to be one of the most effective exercises to prevent falls in older adults. Sandi Wicher, is the owner of the business Harmony and Health, teaching Tai Chi and Qigong classes at Many Waters Wellness Center. Sandi has been a fitness, Yoga and Tai Chi instructor for the past 35 years and is a graduate of the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine Qigong Instructor training program. She has traveled throughout the US and to China on two occasions for further study with master instructors in Tai Chi and Qigong Theory. She is a Master Trainer for the Tai Chi for Health Institute under the direction of Dr. Paul Lam. As a MT, Sandi conducts regular classes and workshops teaching participants of all ages as well as being authorized to certify instructors in the Tai Chi for Health Programs. The new minimum cycles will end on the day of the month the “main’ member was born… example: Jim Abajian was born on the 11th day of his birthday month so his and Rhonda’s minimum cycle will run from the 12th of every month through the 11th of the following month. It’s very simple, just remember to have spent your minimum of $45 no later than the day of the month of your birthday! Those who have birthdays later than the end of the month, will fall on the last day of the month. So if you were born on the 31st and there are only 30 days in the current month, your cycle would end on the 30th. Board of Directors

Handicap Parking The Club has just doubled our handicap parking stalls by adding two (2) more restricted handicap parking stalls just west of the Club’s flagpole. With these 2 additional handicap parking stalls, we now ask that no one park along side the sidewalk on either side the port cochere. Please only use the port cochere area for loading and unloading of passengers and quick deliveries. Thank You for your attention to making this are more member friendly! House Committee
