Welcome to our celebration and thank you for sharing this special event with us. 50 years, 600 months, 18,262 days, 438,291 hours, 26,297,460 minutes, 1,577,847,600 seconds - simple measurements of time. Our 50 years is not as much a measurement of time but is a story of its people.
This company was founded on a dream of Fred Langley, who was involved with a company called East Tennessee Ford, the largest Ford Truck dealership in America in 1966. Fred knew a change was coming in their business and that the Ford line was not going to satisfy the demands of the coal fields of the sixties. He also knew the offerings of the Mack company could satisfy those needs, so Fred flew to Allentown and sold Zenon Hansen, the Chairman and President of Mack Trucks, on granting a dealership as soon as Fred could secure an acceptable location in Eastern Kentucky. It took Fred 8 days to the secure the land and property where our corporate headquarters stands today in the little town of Prestonsburg, KY. Eastern Kentucky Mack was born January 4, 1967!
The new company brought in talent from the Knoxville Ford dealership and also acquired talent from the region. John Smallman, the manager, Jim McClung, the finance person, and Gene Crass, the salesman, along with the leadership of Fred Langley, were the nucleus of what was to become Worldwide Equipment. Local people were added, folks like Phil Nelson, Lester Freels, Floyd Greene, Wendell Wells, Willard Adkins, Billy Lafferty, Carl Sellards, Truman Shepard, Slim Campbell, Wilma McClure, Mary Hall, Phil Nelson and others were hiredmany of these original folks worked until their retirement, many worked in multiple locations and job areas of our company. Some helped start new dealership locations which helped the company grow to Middlesboro, KY, Charleston, WV, Bluefield, WV, and Jane Lew, WV during the years from 1967 to 1975.
Accomplishment came early for Eastern Kentucky Mack when the dealership was named dealer of the year from Mack Trucks in 1971; from a start up business in an unpopular territory to “Top Dog” in
and Knoxville 7-8 hours away on worse roads.
There were no nice 4 lanes, no local airports. There were no dealers with accessible inventory across the street, no place to find parts close by - WE were the option.
Customers worked long hours and needed to be serviced on their job sites so Wendell Wells became one of the first outside parts sales people at the ripe old age of 18 and from this humble start moved to the top executive level of our company before retirement after 43 years.
Some ran stores and departments while some sold products, fixed trucks, and swept floors. All were equally important to the building of this organization. As the company grew and took on new opportunities, new franchises in new markets continued to build solely on an investment in people. Steel, wood, concrete, and asphalt make buildings, but people make companies - good people make good companies and great ones make companies like ours.
four short years! This was accomplished by hard work and good people that had a strong belief in accomplishment, a dedication to customer service, and a “can-do” attitude. The values of our people today are the same values as the people that founded our company.
Worldwide has always invested in people - given our people the opportunity to grow, trusted them, and challenged them to be all they could be. We were blessed to begin our organization in a part of America where strong work habits and loyalty were common core values. Our beginnings in this region taught us much about customer service and loyalty to our relationships with our people, our partners, and our customers. We learned early it was our job to fulfill each of these core responsibilities. Our rural beginnings forced our organization to find ways to solve customer problems because a simple alternative was 5-6 hours away. As the company grew to other markets, we continued to seek out good people, people that believed in our core values and concepts. People that worked hard and believed in the caring attitude WE had for our customers, our partners, and our communities. These were folks like Larry Howerton, Randy Polk, Skip Burdette, Mike Pendleton, Jeff Bates, Mike Null, Chuck Bradley, Jeff Taylor, Kenneth Kidd, Greg St. Clair, Raleigh Neil, Larry Hicks, Steve Clark, Doug Goble, Molly Price, Joe Willis, Larry Whitt, Bart Brown, Tim Matthews, Jimmy Baker, Ron Fater, Jerry Beckett, Jimmy Duncan, Tommy Smith, Liz Sparkman, Berta Adkins, Raleigh Neel, Lloyd Oslonian, Ron Teter, Scott Blevins, Glen Webb, and others. These folks attending our anniversary this weekend and ones who could not be here are the pillars of this organization.
In every state and every location WE are our people. I pray our first commitment will be to our people! It is our utmost promise to put our people first and ask our people to take good care of our customers and honor our relationships with our partner suppliers. If we make a choice between a good customer and a good employee, we will choose the good employee every time!
As we look back over this 50 year period, the good and successful times far outweigh those that were not so good. Most of our bad times were caused by choices that were in the best interest of the person, rather than the best interest of the company. In every good time, I know our people made it that way and in every bad time I saw our people rise up and pull Worldwide successfully through the storm. I learned the use of prayer was helpful in more than one opportunity in our past.
In the last 50 years we have been blessed with good partners in our choices of franchises, suppliers, bankers, and accountants that, in most cases, have been there for WE daily and in tough times especially. We have seen challenges in our markets and in our market friends. We have always been blessed to have good friends that have seen us through and people that have helped us be successful - none more than John Conkin and Dan Clark! Since 1977, our corporate logo has been WE, something we are very proud of. “We the people” are the first words of the preamble of our constitution and these words are the core of our company.
I am extremely proud of our company and what our people have accomplished over these 50 short years! I am extremely thankful to our God that has blessed me and my family to have shared most of the last 50 years being a part of this thing we call WE. God bless each of you. It is my hope that at WE’s 100th year celebration, our values are the same and our appreciation of our blessings are properly focused!

Our company has come a long way in the past 50 years. January 4, 1967 started the dream of what has become an industry icon in the heavy duty commercial truck dealership landscape. The first day of business started with a single roll of dimes in the cash box till.
Looking over the products sold over the past 50 years, WE have added many choices to our offerings. While those items are high quality, premium products, our true offering is that of our people and their commitment to our customers’
success. Without our people there can be no success. Our best offering is the solution that WE provide and apply to our customer needs.

I started in this industry in 1979 for Mountaineer Mack (Ex Big 4 employees) as a part time employee delivering trucks. In 1980 I went into truck sales. In 1986 I went to Princeton, WV as the sales manager. In 1992 Worldwide purchased the Cincinnati store and I went there as the sales and operation manager. In 1996 I went to Lexington, KY as the sales manager. That lasted 1 year and I transferred to the corporate office and started the KACO program and a wholesale business with several truck body manufactures. In 1998 I became the division manager of the Lexington store. In 2002 Worldwide went through a very tough down turn in the economy and we did away with some division managers and went to regional managers and at this time I became a truck sales person for the Lexington Division.
I truly feel I have been blessed with the opportunities that were given to me.

“Whatever It Takes” (W.I.T.) was an initiative at Worldwide Equipment that was intended to recognize employees who went above and beyond to exemplify excellent customer service. Every month, each division would have the opportunity to nominate one person who was committed to meeting customer satisfaction. Today, WE still take pride in those who have stuck with us and in those who will join us in doing whatever it takes to be the greatest WE can be.
We have been fortunate to do business with WE since 2001 through 2 different companies. This relationship is not only a business partnership, but a personal friendship.
Within the 16 years we have done business with WE, there have good times and bad times in the trucking industry, the economy, and the coal industry; however, by leaning on each other as partners and trusting each other, we both always came out of any situation better than we started.
WE is very special to Paul Crawford along with the ProBilling team because when we started ProBilling over 3 years ago, they trusted us to be their financial partner in handling their accounts receivable and billing. I guess the best words to describe the relationship we have with WE is loyalty and partnership. It’s truly great having a wonderful business partnership, but even more special having a long-lasting friendship.
I want to thank you for inviting me to the celebration of WE’s 50 years. I saw a little more than half of their growth. I started in August of 1989 at Lexington and Middlesboro as local credit manager. Fourteen months later the Corporate Accounts Manager left the company and Randy Polk asked me to take the position. I held the job of Corporate Accounts Manager for just over 25 years, until January 31, 2015, when I ended my career at Middlesboro doing inventory.
I was happily enjoying my retirement when on September 23, 2016, Irvin phoned me, asking if I’d be interested in coming back for a while, until Chris Kidd was replaced. I did agree to come help. I retired in the first place so that I wouldn’t have to learn Fusion, but it was not as bad nor as hard as I thought it was going to be. Of course, I just know enough of Fusion to be dangerous. Then Glen left. I just started my sixth month back with WE and I really have enjoyed my time back.
Worldwide Equipment has been and is a great company to work for. Our employees are exceptionally proud of their work and desire to do a great job for the company. Thanks to Terry Dotson for letting me stay on a while…

Here is a short story that I tell myself every time someone thinks the grass is greener on the other side. I have been on the other side and believe WE will always come out better at Worldwide. Thank you for supporting my family all of these years. I started with Worldwide with a chance to grow in the company if I worked hard. I went from $6.50 an hour to $6.00 to start in shipping/receiving. There have been ups and downs and I have left for the greener grass but it is not always greener and I appreciate the second chance to keep growing our company. It has taken a lot of work and time but I am now a manager with more chances to grow with Worldwide. I owe a lot to this company, especially Terry and Scott and several other people for giving me the chances and keeping me on the right track to keep growing with a great company.

According to research by the US Energy Information Administration, the price of diesel fuel has varied greatly over the past 20 years.
In 2012, it reached an all-time high of nearly $4.00 per gallon! Today, though the price is still higher than in the mid-90s, we boast much lower prices around $2.30.

As we reflect on the past 50 years, we begin to grasp just how much has changed in the world since Worldwide Equipment began business in 1967. In our early years, technology was unfamiliar, costs of living were low, and Worldwide Equipment was a young-budding dealership in Prestonsburg, Kentucky working hard to make a name for itself.
At that time, there were no computers, few electronic typewriters, and all bookkeeping and inventory was done by hand. One employee remarked, “The books had to be balanced at the end of every month before the next month’s business could be started.”
Along with conservative technology were conservative expenses. Paying more than $1.00 per gallon for diesel fuel was unheard of at that time, giving true meaning to “the value of a dollar.”
Worldwide Equipment originated as a single dealership, Eastern Kentucky Mack, but rapidly grew to “Mack’s Big Four,” with two locations in Kentucky and two in West Virginia.
As time went on and the technology age began to emerge, most people remained resistant to this new way of life. Computers, pagers, cell phones, and email were a few among many of the new tools being introduced. In 2000, Wendell Wells deliberated,

over 40 locations in 6 states. To say we have been fortunate in our past 50 years would be an understatement and to expect anything less from the next 50 years would be illogical. Once again, we wish to thank all of our customers and employees for your continuous support since the beginning.

From humble beginnings and a single location, WE have grown to over 1000 family members. That is thousands of people taking care of thousands of customers daily! If not for the indomitable efforts of our people, all that WE have accomplished in the last 50 years would not have been possible. As you and I look back at the history of WE service, the look back is long. Fifty years ago was a very different time. The year was 1967 and the R Model Mack had only been out for a year; it replaced the B model Mack of the day. In fact, 1967 was a milestone year for Mack Trucks. The “Maxidyne” engine was debuted as an industry leading diesel engine. Mack doubled down in 1967 by also introducing the “Maxitorque” transmission, which had the highest torque capacity in the industry. The triple play – Worldwide Equipment was established in Prestonsburg, Kentucky
as a premier Mack dealership from what was Eastern Kentucky Mack. WE sold them, WE provided parts for them, and WE serviced or fixed every one of those Mack trucks in the coal fields.
Back in those days, to repair, or “service”, a truck was straight forward; about all you needed was a fist full of wrenches, a couple of pry bars, and a good old hammer. Now, if you were going to do fuel work, that was best left to someone who could run a pump stand, which in those days was the “high tech” work. But, short of fuel work, just about everything else on the Mack truck was serviced by a mechanic. Yep, I said mekanik and not technician -Why? Mechanic is derived from the word “Mechanical” and that’s exactly what they did was service mechanical systems on Mack Trucks. Much of it was heavy, dirty, and physically exhausting work. There was a lot of “hit it,” “pry it,” “heat it,” and “twist it” in service department conversations back then.
Fast forward those 50 years to 2017. The equipment and WE have evolved. Many mechanical systems became outdated and
were replaced with electronic systems that include computerized controls. There is still a need for mechanics and always will be; this evolution of the truck has created the need for people that service the “High Tech” systems on the truck; hence “Technician.” WE now employee over 250 Technicians that work on, not only Mack Trucks, but anything that is needed to service our customers. The need to train our service technicians to quickly diagnose issues and troubleshoot systems is critical. WE reinforce with all our service personnel that the customer is the reason WE exist and WE must provide an industry leading service if WE want them to return.
The current and future focus in service operations will be to train and develop our people and to create a “Customer Experience” that is second to no one. How is that accomplished? Through the philosophy that is WE – “I and the rest of the group that includes me” working together, striving for perfection; which allows WE to achieve the excellence in service that this company was built on.

After taking on the position of the General Manager of the leasing company 24 months ago, it became clear the leasing division had some serious issues to overcome if it was to remain an integral part of our business. With the help and dedication from our employees, and from our corporate management, we started the process of rebuilding and transitioning the leasing division into the future.
The biggest change was bringing all of the divisions and the leasing company together and working as one company with no boundries. By doing this, we have started the process of building a team environment from the top to the bottom. That has started the building process to bridge our company into the future where WE as a company will go to market as one, and have an offering that no one else can match. It’s been a trying time to say
the least, but the future of WE Lease is looking brighter and brighter every day.
I can’t say enough about the people and management in our company that, who have stood by us from day one, and the drive and determination they have displayed to make our company the best in our markets. It has been a great pleasure being part of this process and understanding the true meaning of WE as a team.
I believe the Leasing division is well on its way to having a good year in 2018 and I look forward to working with the team we have built to take us on the next steps into the future.

Worldwide Corporate team has developed initiatives to grow the company in a broad range of services that enhances our very core values to serve the customers professionally. Terry Dotson researched key economic business sectors in an effort to develop new markets and opportunities that had not been captured by Worldwide Equipment. One area that gained traction was the need to build a Government and Military division that could grow and expand our core capabilities.
Worldwide wanted to use the vast OEM resources the company has pioneered over many years to drive this new business called Worldwide Equipment Defense located in our Asheville Highway Knoxville, Tennessee dealership. Our outstanding ability to provide parts knowledge, technical assistance, service and very specialized fabrication abilities required building a team with Government contracting experience on a National and Global level.
Worldwide developed a plan and launched the new division by hiring Paul and Brad Blizzard in early 2014 with a goal to grow additional business while serving a very important client relating to the US Military Globally. Their collective years of experience with the US Military and Foreign Military Sales programs provided a springboard to successfully navigate government contracts and build wins!
Today, Worldwide Defense group is very proud that we have been able to utilize inner company skills with our wide range of talented staff. Did you know Worldwide is under contract for the next 5 years to provide Department of Homeland FEMA with Emergency 24/7/365 breakdown services? We provide repair services for over 7,000 class 8 trucks, trailers, generators and communication central command RV’s for FEMA. Anytime there is a catastrophic event in the USA that
involves FEMA you will find Worldwide Equipment turning wrenches and providing critical & timely emergency services. FEMA has awarded Worldwide with one of the highest professional services award ratings possible. Worldwide has and continues to meet the requirements of the Federal Government. It feels great to know your company provides services that truly impact many people during devastating, life-changing, natural disaster events.
Worldwide Defense team wishes to encourage all of our branches to work with our team in a quest to build winning programs that are performed in your area of operation. Currently WE Defense works together with our South Carolina stores to supply parts for 6,000 buses over the next 5 years for the State of South Carolina.
Our Lowmansville, Huntington and Lexington teams have provided key services for Red River Army Depot; Department of Forestry and the nuclear transportation system through Blue Grass Army Depot.
Worldwide fabrication services have been very successful building and designing winch systems for the Department of Army SUSV vehicle which is used for many rescue missions. Our winch programs passed extensive field testing in Alaska during low altitude air drop missions, Fort Carson Colorado for high altitude and Europe for various condition testing. Worldwide has the unique ability to surpass our client’s expectations and grow our business throughout all of our branches relating to Government business.

Mack was Worldwide Equipment’s first OEM and has remained dependable since. Founded in 1900, Mack is one of North America’s largest manufacturers of heavyduty trucks. Mack trucks earned the nickname “the Bulldog” from British soldiers for their bluntnosed hoods and incredible durability. These features reminded the soldiers of their country’s mascot, the British Bulldog.
As the second largest heavy-duty brand in the world, Volvo Trucks is present in more than 140 countries, identifying themselves as a global truck brand. Though they offer a wide variety of vehicles and products, trucks are Volvo’s main product selection.
Kenworth is a heavy and mediumduty truck manufacturer that originated in 1923 in Seattle, Washington. In their early years, Kenworth became the first American manufacturer to install diesel engines and sleep cabs in their equipment. Hino was the first non-American transportation brand the United States ever used. In 1981, a U.S. air base in Yokota, Japan purchased two Hino touring buses for the families of Air Force personnel to use for tours and sightseeing. Two years later, the first Hino truck was assembled in the United States. Today, Hino is the 3rd largest truck manufacturer in the world.
Known for their low cab forward trucks, Isuzu has provided maneuverable, cost effective, and durable trucks in the United States since 1984. Since then, a number of Isuzu trucks have been named “Medium-Duty Truck of the Year” and Isuzu has been certified as the best-selling import commercial truck in the United States.

The Truck People are used to wearing many hats, and in 2016, WE added another one to our collection! Worldwide Equipment has grown operations to include International bus dealerships and servicing. Our certified locations span across West Virginia, including Louisa, Princeton, Huntington, Cross Lanes, and White Sulfur Springs.
In West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky, Worldwide Equipment acquired International dealerships from which WE can sell and service buses. With comprehensive services on all bus and van types and state-of-the-art facilities, this new venture should prove to be an exciting one for the Bus People.
