I hope this correspondence nds each of you well, that your summer is going well and the family is happy.
As I write this, I feel it is important that it is shared that these last few days have been especially trying on many of our folks with the passing of Irvin Dotson. Irvin was special; special to me and to many of you both corporately and personally. He was a strong, caring, and loving individual. He loved his family, his church, his God and this company. Many of our people attended his services or funeral from several states and locations to show their love and their respect - love is given but respect is earned! Irvin, my friend for 57 years of my life, was a man many folks respected just as much as did I. ere are comments that will be shared elsewhere in this edition of WE THE PEOPLE that will show our folks’ feelings for this special man that I loved dearly!
When I began to think about this open communication, comments shared during those services and also conversations over the last year, all made me think about our past. Past beginnings, personal past and where we came from. It made me realize that a lot of you have zero idea of much of our past. However, I think it is important to share some of it with you.
Our company started in the little town of Harriman, Tennessee and was rst called “Harriman Motor Company”. Harriman is in Roane County, Tennessee and according to the 1950 census was a community of about 31,600 folks.
Harriman Motors later became East Tennessee Ford and moved to what was referred to as “Trucker’s Lane” in West Knoxville on the site where Beaty Chevrolet is currently located. In fact, we buy vehicles from Beaty Chevrolet quite o en. In the 60’s and 70’s East Tennessee Ford was the largest Ford Truck dealer in North America. at’s a pretty good accomplishment for a company in a town the size of Knoxville at the time!
Knox County according to the 1970 census had a population of 276,293, which has grown to approximately 500,000 residents today. Interestingly, our Corporate Headquarters will soon relocate to Knoxville.
e owners of East Tennessee Ford started Eastern Kentucky Mack in 1967 in a 12-county area that at the time was open territory for the Mack franchise. In fact, no one wanted the market area- there was no money in the mountains and no one wanted the expense or the territory. However, taking a chance, Eastern Kentucky Mack opened there in January of 1967. East Kentucky Mack was the beginning of what became a group of 5 dealerships. ree of which were in West Virginia- Mountain State Mack opened in Charleston in 1969, Mid Mountain Mack opened in Princeton in 1972, and Mountain State Mack of Northern West Virginia opened in 1975. In Kentucky, in addition to East Kentucky Mack, Mid-South Mack opened in Middlesboro in 1971. It was known as the “Big Four” in the 70’s, as Mountain State Mack (now our store in Jane Lew) was a very small location in Westin, WV at the time. Some folks in those days called us the “Mountain Ma a” due to our mountain heritage. at nickname, started by very jealous competitors, made most of our people very mad. WE were simply good, hard-working folks- very, very much like the ones that work and lead our locations today.
I am not going to bore you with a lot of more names of stores and franchises because today, I want to talk about our beginning. at rst store in Prestonsburg in Floyd County, Kentucky was in a small town in the heart of the coal elds. e population in Floyd County in 1970 was 36,000 people. Also in 1970, Princeton West Virginia in Mercer County was 63,200 people. Lewis County West Virginia was about 18,000. Middlesboro, in Bell County Kentucky was 31,000 and approximately 250,000 resided Kanawha County. I share these numbers to remind and inform you WE grew from small town America with small town values and hardworking, simple, solid, caring people! at is the foundation of what we call “Worldwide Equipment” today.
Now in 2021 we are represented in territories from North of Dayton, Ohio to the upper part of the state of Florida and from 100 miles south of Pittsburg to Charleston South Carolina with territory in 9 states. Some larger markets with lots of new product; however, WE are still based
on good caring, giving, special people- “WE THE PEOPLE”. You, your coworker, your families, your communities are all OUR kind of people!!
My dad always told me, “Son, never forget where you came From and never forget who your friends are.” Dad was a coal miner and a small businessman who owned a motorcycle shop and a couple of service stations during his lifetime. My mom was a school teacher and ran a little country grocery store near Pikeville, Kentucky. ey were good folks- hard working folks just like you and me.
I talk about these things to remind each of us the foundation, the money, the opportunities that are given to you, to all of our people and to me came from small towns- mostly coal miners and coal money! Coal, the stu that made our steel, that was used to win our wars, make our cars, ships and trains. Coal that powered most of our past electricity! at is who paid for or made it possible to pay for all that is currently Worldwide Equipment.
Our rst venture out of the coal elds was in Lexington, Kentucky. Lexington lost money for years- money contributed from the coal elds was sent to Lexington to pay its people. e same story carried forward in Cincinnati, Knoxville, Chattanooga and several other markets. In each of those locations, WE had to learn the market, the products and the culture. We had to learn how to earn business in those new markets with new customers. Many of the locations were rst led by people that moved from coal country to those new markets. en new people were found, new products were o ered and mistakes were made. Finally, progress happened and eventually pro ts were earned! Good returns resulted from the investments there. However, each of us need to never forget where Worldwide Equipment came from!
People have always been our most important asset- you, your co-workers, those retired, those that have moved on to other things, or those gone to be with our Lord. Folks like Irvin Dotson, Wendell Wells, Randy Polk, Joe Willis, Glen Webb, Mike Null, Skip Burdette, Billy La erty, Charlie Howell, Slim Campbell, Ken Gre , Lester Freels, Joe Reynolds, Larry Howerton, Ada Sammons, Susan Snyder, Jim McClung, Fred Langley, Kenneth Kidd, Gene Crass, Molly Price, Ken Stephens, Raleigh Neil, Mary Hall, Berta Adkins, Diana Blanton, Liz Sparkman, Donald Morrison and many, many others. Most of these names may mean little to you, however they are part of every success, every payday, every new building, every new pickup, every new opportunity each of us have had or will have in the future.
Please think about where you came from. Who helped you? Whose shoulders do you stand on? I thank God for all the thousands of people who are part of our past and the hundreds of you that are ours today, our present and our future! God bless you and your families and continue to bless this thing WE call “WE THE PEOPLE”; the people who make Worldwide Equipment a successful company!
ank you for all you do!!!!!
I’ll end by sharing Irvin’s last text to me: “It’s all good.” He went to be with Jesus just 36 hours later. I loved him and love his family. So, please go tell someone or many “someones” in your life that you love them and appreciate them today.
God Bless, Terry
First, I would like to take a minute to thank the man who held this job before me: Irvin Dotson. Irvin was so good at what he did that he le a great legacy and one that makes my job a lot easier than it could have been. As Mr. Dotson said, we need to remember who’s shoulders we stand on and Irvin’s are one of the those for me. I only hope that I can help Worldwide as much as he did over the years and I will miss our talks about the history of Worldwide and all of the scoop on Terry Dotson as a youngster.
Our rst quarter is now in the books and we continue to have good nancial results. It appears we may be able to have a tremendous year, maybe even a record one, if the manufacturers we represent can just get the components they need to get us the products to sell. Shortages of materials that are used to make the trucks and parts we sell and especially of workers willing to report back to work in some states is wreaking havoc on our industry and many others right now. On another topic, we are in the process of relocating our home o ce operations, which is where most of our money is collected, our nances are organized and our bills and our people are paid. erefore, it is one of those things we have to get right. Over the next couple of months, a lot of new people in Knoxville will begin handling a lot more of the things we have handled in Prestonsburg for many years. I am con dent that those new folks will do a great job for us and I want to welcome them aboard as part of the WE family. However, I don’t want to forget those who got us where we are and I want to make sure we all say a collective “thank you” to all of those people in Prestonsburg who have done such a wonderful job for us now and for so many years past. Without their tireless e orts in the background, WE would not have been able to grow and prosper as we have over the years. Selling something is exciting. However, did you know that 90% of companies do not fail from a lack of sales? Instead, most companies fail from not managing their nances and pro tability, which is where all of those jobs in the “background” in Prestonsburg and now in Knoxville become important. And, I am proud to say that we have had and will continue to have some of the best in the business.
I’ll keep you posted as we go along and ask for your patience when needed.
anks for all you do.
Steve“ Love is given but respect is earned!”
Below are stories shared by our WE family about Irvin. Some heartwarming, some funny, and all a testament to Irvin’s kind and genuine spirit.
“Irvin meant so many things to me, as know he did to all of you. He and I had the ability to quarrel with one another and then laugh about it 10 minutes later. never had to worry about what he was thinking, even though he was a man of few words, his body language spoke volumes! We could be sitting together in a meeting, and knew instantly the moment he was nished or ready to leave. I even knew from his body language when he was nished hearing from me as well (HA!). We had a working relationship that allowed us the opportunity to learn each another. And this did not come so easily! remember asking Jim on my rst trip to Lexington how could get on his dad’s good side because he seemed impossible to understand. Jim simply said, “That’s Dad, but he has a big heart.” And boy, was he ever right. Irvin loved BIG. And once you were in, you were in. That is just how he operated. He is one of the very few people who would ask about my children or family and knew that he was genuinely interested. He did not ask out of habit, or because it seemed like the right thing to do. He asked because he genuinely cared about the answer… about their well-being. The night brought home my daughter from the hospital at 3 days old, she was very sick. Irvin checked on us throughout the night, I will never forget that. Not only did he check on us, but he also made certain that she and I had everything we needed. That is who he was. He was bigger than life. He loved deeply, he loved God, his family, and his precious grandchildren. He never missed an opportunity to keep me updated on the latest adventures of each grandchild. He was so proud. I felt like knew them and had never met any of them. One funny moment that rings through my memories all the time is how terrible of a driver he was. And he would tell you the same about my driving! Our rst time traveling together, of course he had to drive, and I honestly did not think I would make it back safely to Prestonsburg. I am not shy about sharing my thoughts, so I said to him “you are a horrible driver!” His reply, “WOW!!! Tell me how you really feel!” and can still hear his voice emphasizing the ‘WOW’. Irvin made my life better by simply knowing him. will forever be grateful for our time and friendship and for Worldwide for the opportunity to have met him. Rest in Peace, my Pal. love you dearly.”
Carla StapletonMy mom Roseanna, my brother Irv and myself would like to send our deepest thanks to our WE FAMILY for your love and support over these past couple of years and especially over the past week. This has been an extremely hard couple of days for us as family as we have lost our Hero. Big Daddy, which is what the grandchildren called him had a deep love for his family and had a deep love for Worldwide Equipment.
There are two things that my dad took very serious, family and work. He was very passionate about both. When he was unable to work every day and was not able to be in the middle of the action it was very di cult for him. Our family would like to thank Scott and all the corporate sta for the love
you showed our dad through this journey. Each of you worked with him every day and your support continuing to include him on the emails and conversations when he was struggling was a blessing, something so small 100% meant the world to him.
Mr. Dotson, as you said in a previous email yours and my dad’s friendship goes back to age 14. Most people will never know over the past couple of years all you have done for my dad; WE know as a family and thank you. WE will never forget.
Thank you for all the prayers, phone calls, emails, and text messages. They are all so special. He always said that this company is special, and he made the statement to me about two weeks ago saying he wished he had found WE before 1992.
Now WE move on, as my dad would want us all to do. He would always ask me every time I talked to him “Did you generate any revenue today”. He always loved to see WE grow and will be watching over all of us.
Thank you WE Family!
“To make a di erence in someone’s life you don’t have to be brilliant, rich, beautiful or perfect, you just have to care. Irvin cared about all of his WE family!“
JoAnn Pro tt“Irvin Dotson was a person of strong character. He had the ability to focus on the things that needed attention now and the things that could wait. He took one day at a time. He faced his fears and trusted the Lord to get him through. Irvin was a positive in uence on me, and I could always depend on him being there to talk with, pray with and sometimes cry with. Irvin and I shared many Saturdays at Corporate and he always found time to brag on his family and share a word of faith. will miss my friend and my brother in Christ. God must have needed a special person to help do a job in Heaven.“
Tim Martin
“Irvin was our great Christian friend that always encouraged us. We always could go to Irvin for anything and trust and know it would be con dential...
He was great Leader, great man of integrity and a great friend whom WE will never forget.
Irvin would email us and ask us to call him and when Molly and I would get that email, we knew we were headed somewhere to train, which was an honor that he put his trust in us to train for WE.
We will never forget our great friend and he always said whatever happens, he’s a winner either way.
At the end of every text, email, etc., his last words would be:
“Faith over Fear
One Blessed Man
In Faith Believing.”
We sure will miss you, Irvin.“
Tammy Ausmus and Molly Price
“I remember about 16 years ago attended a meeting in Prestonsburg. It was late evening and had gathered to kinda greet and meet. I knew very few faces and stood alone just looking around. roll across to a smiling face and he walks over to me and introduces himself and shakes my hand. It was Irvin.
It was with that greeting and smile I thought it really was a family oriented company. God Bless You, Irvin.“
Randy Hull
“First of all I want to say that loved Irvin Dotson, was able to work with him for over 25 years, and he was always there for me. My Irvin Dotson story brings us to Seattle Washington, where we were at a Paccar Leasing conference. One evening we traveled to the city to eat out at a fancy steak house Mr. Randy Polk told us to go to. WE were met at our table by our waiter holding his left arm up to his chest, a white napkin draped over it and in the other hand holding a serving tray up. Yes, it was a great meal. Well, being in the city, we wanted to walk around and see the sites. Once we nished, Irvin stood up and asked the waiter if it was safe. The waiter looked up at him and said, “Who would mess with you?” I wish could have taken a picture of Irvin’s smile. WE enjoyed the city.”
Wayne Dyer“I bought Irvin’s motorcycles a few years ago and he helped to load them on the trailer at Corp o ce. He tripped coming o the trailer and fell down on the pavement, but he got up and was ok. came out of meetings later that day, asked Kim if he was available, and was told he was at the Dr. She could tell by my reaction that thought he had hurt himself helping me, but she immediately told me it was a prior scheduled appointment, much to my relief!“
Barry Holman“Irvin was always helpful and just all-around good guy. remember when accepted the opportunity to come back to Worldwide Equipment. The rst call got was from Irvin, welcoming me back home. He will truly be missed! “
Chris Davis“ never had the pleasure of meeting or knowing Irvin. Being new to the company, attended a meeting recently in Gatlinburg.
During the meeting Mr. Terry Dotson was addressing the crowd. He was visibly shaken and very concerned about Irvin. He stated that if everyone could, please pray for Irvin as he is near and dear to his heart. He then stated that he would not be attending the rest of the meeting so that he could go and be with Irvin.
My heart hurts for Irvin and his family. Even though I never met Irvin, could feel how special of a person that he was to everyone by listening to Mr. Dotson. pray that Irvin’s family and friends can nd some comfort in these times of pain.
Irvin would want that.
God Bless. “
Tim Morgan
“ feel lucky that got to work with Irvin for many years. His advice to me was: “Always keep it in the ling cabinet!“
Michelle Segress“ learned countless valuable lessons working with Irvin over the years. Without question, he helped shaped the person am today for the better. consider myself truly blessed that our paths crossed in this life.“
Brandon McDonald“When moved to Greenville Irvin would call once in a while just to see how was holding up and asked if he could help. He gave great advice and one particular piece that hit home the most was “ If you always side with your employees you wont ever make a bad decision”. He got to be one of those people trusted. He became a friend and am going to miss him. My wish for him is that the heavens have given him everything in death that his faith gave him in life.
Thank you for everything you did.“
Bob Kelley“Irvin already had his challenges when joined the WE family and hope that didn’t give him any more. didn’t see him often but ever time did his indomitable spirit and dedication to the WE family were obvious. No matter how busy he was or how he was feeling he always had time for you when you needed him. Strong in body and faith to the end, he was the person we should all strive to be more like.
Rest In Peace, ne servant, the Lord has you now.“
Bill Babis
“Irvin and go back several years. My rst dealings with him left me with the thoughts he was a pretty tough guy. As got to know him better he was a tough guy with a real big heart. Irvin was one of the few that truly inspired me. He was passionate about all things that mattered. We became very good friends. When think of Irvin it will always be good. I will miss my friend.“
Randy Dove“He is/was a man with a wonderful sense of humor and quick responses. He was a mentor to me for giving me guidance in business, strong work ethic, dedication to his job! He would often be chuckling on the phone with me and would asked what would TD think about that! You always knew he had your best intensions at heart. will always have a love for this guy for whom he was a true inspiration to me.
Rest in Peace my friend. GOD Bless you!“
“ have many fond memories of Big Daddy. One of the best things heard from his son Jim is that Irvin was at peace knowing he would see all his children and grandchildren again because of their relationship with Jesus. What a truly amazing legacy. A Godly family man with a rm gentleness is how I remember Irvin. Till we meet again!“
Scott Pekar“He was one of the most genuine friends I ever had. will miss him.“
Jack A. Yarbrough“He told it to you straight, and if you were straight with him, he called you a friend. His friendship and his teachings, I consider that a great blessing! Keep smiling!“
Michelle Evans“He was my “Go To Guy”. frequently sought his compassionate guidance in business and personal matters. He often saved me from myself and others. He was always there and he cared. Everyone needs an Irvin Dotson.“
Greg St. Clair“The knowledge he shared, the understanding he showed was truly a gift. nd it a blessing for the Lord to allow my path in this life to cross paths with Irvin Dotson. I will continue to lift the family in my prayers.“

Our trucks are rolling billboards for the company most of the WE trucks are clean and well-advertised but there are some salesman trucks that are less appealing with worn out stickers and lack of appeal going down the road or to the customers . I was just wondering about what protocol the management can take to make them shine once again.
A couple of years ago WE transitioned away from the full wrap of the vehicles. This situation contributed to one of the reasons WE made the change. WE now o er replacement decals from our marketing team. Accidents, fading, decals peeling, as well as other issues can be corrected with updated decals.
