Jen and I recently took a road trip. Usually, WE do this on the bike, this year WE decided to take the truck. WE experienced a wide variety of driving conditions. Weather, WE saw an electrical storm, watched in rain off in the distance across the horizon, the sunshine, the fog, and the nighttime driving. Traffic, construction, even feelings like hunger, excitement, or being tired. Realistically, what WE are experienced was the actual road. WE drove the interstate highway, took a few back roads. Ran right through towns, out in the middle of nowhere and even got off on a dirt road more than once. WE listened to a variety of music during our trip. One song I remember playing as WE were driving through Kansas was “life is a highway”. You may recall the words or the tune. It got me thinking about how life really can be a highway. A journey more than a simple destination.
That journey, whether it takes place on the road, or in life, will face a variety of challenges, speeds, and flows, realistically a few dangers too. I thought I might offer up some thoughts about journey on the road and a journey through life that, depending on which lane you’re in, might be helpful or give you a fresh perspective on both.
… It is OK to have a song like Life is a Highway, Rocking Down the Highway or Every Day is a Winding Road playing in your head right now…
Residential Street:
You’re either just starting out, or just winding down. There is an element of excitement on either end here – the beginning of a new journey, even if it’s the same ole daily drive – or the end of a long run when finally, you get to pull in your drive and (hopefully) relax. Naturally, these can both be to or from the work world: people that are just beginning to find their way, get used to their skills and get moving and mixed up with those that are tired yet happy on their way to retirement or the next assignment.
Are you on a Residential Street?
Two-Lane Road:
Man what a view, the variety, excitement, twists and turns, finding our way in the middle of nowhere, windows down, sun roof open, your hair in the wind, wild and free… then you get stuck on a dead straightaway behind a Subaru with the passing lines dashed with just enough traffic from the other side to keep you going five below the speed limit, holding you back, leaving you no choice but to settle in and take it one mile at a time. Sounds like the rut WE all find ourselves in from time to time.
Are you on a two-lane road? Trying your best to get ahead but stuck?
Four/Six Lane City Street: Now We’re talking. You’re moving, but there are more red lights to contend with. Go fast… stop. Go fast… stop. Catch a few lights in your favor,… stop. This almost sounds growing a business or learning a new skill?
Very rarely is progress a straight and steady line. There are flows, peaks and valleys, gaining ground and setbacks, especially as we establish new abilities, new products, new people, new markets, uncover new opportunities to perform, and so on. You certainly hope you don’t see all red lights, but you also know you’re not going to see all greens, either.
Interstate or Highway:
Now this is what it’s all about! Get over to that fast lane and hammer down. Hit a few buttons, set the cruise control, and relax your feet a touch. In other words, you get in “the zone”. Have you ever driven ten miles and not recall seeing a thing? That’s “the zone”. What a wonderful world that is, and an experience that is hardly ever realized, but always appreciated after the fact. WE are absolutely rolling to our destination, and nothing will get in our way. WE know where WE are going and WE know how to get there.
Except, wait, what’s this? Google Maps/WAZE/GPS has that deep blood
red up ahead. Uh oh. An accident? Construction? Rain so heavy you can’t see the car in front of you and the drops feel like they’re going to shatter your windshield? Maybe you’re just pulling into the nearest city at exactly the wrong time of the day. Man, flying through “the zone” was fun, how do WE get back on THAT road?! How do WE find that sense of accomplishment again?
Here is some advice.
Know where you want to go in life, in business, and in your vehicle. Have a plan, a road map to where you what to be, writing it down makes it real!
Pay attention to the signals. The signs from others on the road, the signs on the road, the feel of the road, as well as the signals from your vehicle.
Ensure your vehicle is in good shape for the journey, take care of your health as well.
A Letter From The EVP
Folks,
I wanted to take an opportunity to share some thoughts as we move through this new fiscal year for Worldwide Equipment. Although we have had some strange times over the last 18 months or so, WE all need to understand that #WEGOTTHIS !
The prior year plus has been somewhat of a rollercoaster ride both personal and professionally for many of us. There was a time you may have struggled to find toilet paper or someone may have looked at you funny or said something to you if you tried to purchase 2 loaves of bread instead of 1. I hope that the majority of that is behind us all and the “New Normal” starts to settle in for all us people of habit. For those of you with school age children you can appreciate the need for the new norm to find us quickly!
Relating to business; WE experienced a sharp decline in sales, gross profit production and overall profitability the first part of this past year. This bottomed out in July and we started to see an uptick in parts sales beginning in August 2020. Service operations have experienced more ups and downs than parts, some days we have more than WE can handle and some days WE are calling customers looking for the next job. Overall, WE are good and the business is building every day; tomorrow is looking bright!
So, what are WE working on these days to continue to make Worldwide Equipment an excellent place to work? WE need technicians and just good folks all around to fill in both developmental and critical roles for the company. WE are no different than any other company in that our success is based on good people doing their jobs really good, and I can tell you that WE have some superstars in our ranks! This past year highlighted a whole bunch of people that just came in and did their jobs each and every day – I for one appreciate each and every one of you!
Be courteous and cautious on your journey.
Keep your tank full!
Pay attention, proceed quickly but do not hurry, always with caution, but never from fear. Use your blinker and make sure you buckle your seatbelt. Have reasonable insurance and maintain your vehicle (body) well. It is one heck of a ride that we all get to take, so it’s our job soak in the opportunity to live life to the fullest and enjoy the road and its marvelous variations of experiences each and every day. Be adventurous, look for new roads, or new routes to get where you want to be. Sometimes the shortest and easiest way is NOT the best way, you just might miss something really special.
WE never know when we’ll put it in park for the final time, so I suggest stick it in drive and mash the gas while WE can!
God Bless, Scott
Oh yeah, did you know WE have a Management Development program that outlines a training path for those with the competencies and desire to become managers? WE are looking internally for these candidates today, but just maybe you know someone that you believe has what it takes to be a future leader at Worldwide Equipment – if so, let your manager know, please!
Lastly, everyone seems to be trying to muddle their way through this pandemic at a personal level. Many questions in today’s world that have several different possible answers. YOU need to do what is best for you and your family, I will share a couple of my beliefs with you all.
“Do I get the vaccine” - As I write this, my wife and I have the first of two shots to be vaccinated. I believe that the vaccine will not keep you from contracting the virus or transmitting the virus but I do believe it will help lessen the impact on you if you contract the virus.
“Should I wear a mask” - I wear a mask if everyone else does since the masks we wear keep you more from transmitting the virus rather than contracting the virus.
“Do I stay at home if I have been around someone that has the virus” - I have most likely been around someone in the past week that has the Virus and neither of us knew, I believe we all need to be socially responsible and follow the Health Department guidelines. If you have any of the symptoms go get checked and stay away from everyone! Wash your hands more often, wear a mask when relevant and be a good steward for your society as WE all try to continue to find our way through this situation.
Thank you for your time to read my thoughts and remember #WEGOTTHIS!

Thanks for all you do.

HDHP
High Deductible Health Plan
What is an HDHP?
A plan with a higher deductible than a traditional insurance plan. The monthly premium is usually lower, but you pay more health care costs yourself before the insurance company starts to pay its share (your deductible).
A high deductible plan (HDHP) can be combined with a health savings account (HSA), allowing you to pay for certain medical expenses with money free from federal taxes.
THE PLUS SIDE
There are many great things about participating in a High Deductible Health Plan.
• Its lower cost out of your paycheck compared to other plan options.
• You can contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA) on a pre-tax basis. This allows you to save for future healthcare expenses. The money is yours to keep, even if you leave Worldwide Equipment.
• The money saved can be looked at as an alternate way to save for retirement. The money that you don’t use can be used for non-healthcare items after age 65.
MAXIMIZE THE PLAN
Here are some ways to protect your pocketbook from the healthcare expenses you might find yourself with before your deductible is met.
CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR HSA: It is not required for you to put money into your Health Savings Account (HSA), but it is highly recommended. You can choose to increase or decrease your allotted HSA mount throughout the year.
SHOP AROUND: It is financially beneficial to search for doctors, facilities, and prescriptions that are offered at lower costs.
• Log in to Anthem.com to search for providers and estimate costs, or to search for your prescription to see if it’s covered.
• Talk to your doctor about generic options. Drugs with the same chemical make-up are often offered at a fraction of the price.
HOW DOES THE COST COMPARE?
Here is a scenario to show you how the three different medical options compare. There are three factors to consider when doing a cost analysis:

1.) Cost for healthcare services used
2.) Cost out of your paycheck to participate in the medical plan
3.) Money saved in a Health Savings Account (HSA)
Sally has been having trouble with her knee. She first sees her Primary Care Doctor (PCP). The PCP refers her to an orthopedic specialist. Once she speaks to a specialist, it’s decided she should have an MRI.
In this example, Sally is enrolled in the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). She also contributes $2,000 per year in her Health Savings Account (HSA). Sally could have used the money in her HSA to pay for the $1,700 owed in doctor’s visits. Additionally, she would have $300 leftover for use in future healthcare expenses. She would not have this option if she were enrolled in the Enhanced or Basic plans.

A Letter From The CFO
Our financial results remain strong despite some headwinds we are beginning to see with availability of product to sell coming under pressure. We are continuing to adjust our strategic plans in order to be able to handle the weakness in product availability we are starting to see. Rest assured that all of us, especially Mr. Dotson, have seen this movie before and we will make the adjustments necessary to protect the company and our people as much as we can from the effects of the pandemic, labor shortages and the taxing and spending that is running rampant in Washington, DC.
For the rest of this issue, I want to focus on your own personal finances and encourage you to take control of your own future. For decades, the folks in Washington have been over spending and not being good stewards of the country’s checkbook. They raided the Social Security account many times over the years and placed a bunch of IOUs in the account. Where we are now, the account will be empty of any enough funds by somewhere around 2034. There will still be money coming in from payroll deductions, so that doesn’t mean that social security will “run out” but it does mean that, based on today’s figures and the amount of folks reaching retirement age in the near future, the fund will only be able to cover somewhere around 78% of scheduled benefits by that time. There are multiple scenarios as to how they may deal with that, but almost all of them are tough choices. Also, they could fix it completely and there are also many suggestions on how that could be
done, however no one seems intent on doing that so far either. So, with that amount of uncertainty, I would suggest that each of you look at a way to help yourself minimize reliance on social security in retirement.
One of the ways to do so is to save for your own retirement and we have a company sponsored 401K to help you do so. 401k plans were created by Congress in 1978 and went into effect in 1980. In simple terms, the way a 401K works is that you contribute money into the plan which is not taxed as income and the money grows tax free over time as well. You only pay tax as you take the money out in retirement- which can be a great deal for most folks. In the case of Worldwide, we additionally sweeten the pot by matching your contributions up to the first $1000 you contribute, which is more free money for your retirement. I’m not here to give you investment advice- the plan is totally voluntary and there are other ins and outs to 401K plans that are too detailed to share in this small space (and also a Roth plan that works differently but may fit your needs better). So, I would encourage you to inform yourself and maybe visit the 401K information page at our plan website (JP Morgan Chase) or call or send me an email and I will get you more information. Just suffice it to say that this can be a powerful tool that you should consider for you and your family’s future and WE want to make sure you get the information you need to make the best decision. The best steward of your money is you.
Until next time, thanks for all you do.

ELIZABETH STURDIVANT RETIRES
Congratulations to Elizabeth Sturdivant on her retirement. Chattanooga submitted the following write-up:
“Elizabeth starting working for Britton Mack on August 15, 1983. She would do contracts on the typewriter and figure the interest with the adding machine. We had no computers, no fax machines, and no cell phones. You would take a napkin from the night before (at the bar trying to sell a truck) and whatever you had written on the napkin, that’s what you put on the contract and that’s what the customer signed. No questions asked. Times have changed. Elizabeth got her insurance licenses for the state of TN., AL., and GA. We sold a lot of insurance and made good money. She loved selling trucks and for anyone to sell trucks. She always said once it gets into your blood, you’re hooked. Worldwide Equipment of TN, Inc. bought us out in May of 2003. Terry Dotson and Wendell Wells interviewed Elizabeth for the job. At a meeting that morning Charlie Meade announced that she would be the office manager. She was so glad that she went to work that morning. Worldwide had several locations and several office managers, several came to Chattanooga to train Elizabeth and taught her what to do. It was a good day. She has made lifelong friends at Worldwide Equipment; she loves to tell the story about her going to Shaw with Scott Blevins on a sales call. We got in the car and she sat in silence and thinking to herself, now he is a good salesman (yes he did get the deal!). Next to selling trucks she loves to cook and feed the employees and the customers. She takes a genuine interest in each employee and treats them like family. She devotes her time and interest to the employees and is a very loyal company employee.”

Have a wonderful retirement, Elizabeth. WE sure will miss you.

Thank you to Johnny Britton for 40 years of service! Wow! Shown here with Joshua Twomey.

Knoxville

WELCOME MANAGERS!
As summer comes to an end down in South Georgia, WE start to see fall peaking around in freshly dug peanut fields and at the bottom of cotton stalks WE can see South Georgia snow. A new season brings new faces to Worldwide Equipment of Georgia, I am proud to welcome new management to our team:
Katelyn Rebecca Toussaint, a junior nursing student at Carson Newman University and a member of the Carson Newman Swim Team has been recognized as an EAGLE SCHOLAR for the 2020-2021 academic year. The award is for outstanding academic excellence and deep commitment to athletics. Katelyn is the daughter of Barbara Toussaint and Knoxville Operations Manager Jim Toussaint.

Knoxville would like to express their appreciation for Cindy Hutton, who got some very high praise from Alan McFarland and Michael Prybyzerski over at Highway Transport!
Alan had this to say:
Curtis Ellis was hired in August as Operations Manager for all three locations. Curtis started his career after serving in the U.S. Marine Corps as a helicopter mechanic, serving tours in Afghanistan and Jordan. He brings a wealth of knowledge of operations with him. Curtis led two large fleets in Georgia and one in Colorado. He and his family live in Leesburg.
Mark Fowler was hired in August as Service Manager in Albany. Mark has served in several capacities in our industry, sales, parts and service. He comes to Worldwide from the local Peterbilt dealership where he was Service Manager for the last five years. He and his family live in Sylvester.

Tim Williams was hired in August as Service Manager in Valdosta. Tim served in U.S. Navy as a heavy equipment technician. Tim has work in our industry for the last 35 years serving as a Porter to a Service Manager. He comes to Worldwide from The Pete Store in Baltimore, Maryland where he served as Service Manager. He and his wife just moved to Lake Park, Georgia just a few months ago to get away from hustle and bustle of the city.
The daily struggle that all managers deal with is recruiting and retaining good people. This job never ends. I want to build a team here in Georgia of trust and integrity that encourages every employee to be part of something great. Mr. Blevins says all the time, “WE must show our people what good looks like”. My desire with these personal changes is to show OUR people what good looks like. Please join me in welcoming these guys to our TEAM!

“Gentlemen,
The whole time have been with Highway Transport I have worked with Cindy on parts because she knows her parts well and can find the parts that everyone else throws their hands up and say’s sorry. Cindy goes the extra mile for her customers. This come from a dealer that she helped us get a part for one of our trucks that has been down over a week with a driver in a motel.”
Thank you for your hard work, Cindy!
The Knoxville service department extends its special thanks to Jen Blevins for her recruiting efforts at local technical schools!

WHAT DO OUR CUSTOMERS HAVE TO SAY?
Where would WE be without our customers?
“
Service Dept was outstanding! I had an air leak issue that nobody else could figure out (4 repairing shops). I was in and out quickly and all employees were friendly. Will recommend to all my buddies!”
KEITH JENNIS Columbia, SC“I came in to have my AC condenser replaced, I was in and out of the shop after 45 minutes. Very friendly staff and most importantly super-fast.”

We always strive for excellence in customer service and want to make sure that each customer has the easiest, most enjoyable experience possible. When performance is especially stellar, WE always appreciate it when our customers drop us a 5-star review!
“Down right good people and great customer service”
AMP HODGE

“I GAVE THEM 5 STARS! BECAUSE FROM THE MOMENT I GOT HERE, ON THE 21 DAY OF SEPTEMBER A DAY I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER FOR THAT WAS THE DAY THE HERO ARRIVED. AND WAS WORKING ON MY TRUCK EVEN BEFORE THEY PULLED IT INTO THE SHOP. SO, A BIG SHOUT OUT TO THE WORLDWIDE EQUIPMENT SHOP TEAM. THANK YOU.” VALERIE RHODES
