Several weeks ago I sent this story about John Wooden to the Division Managers. I have used this many times talking to new employees that were asking about what it is like to work at Worldwide Equipment. I thought I might share in this edition of WE the People.
Legendary College Basketball Coach John Wooden is one of the most sought-after examples of excellence because of his pristine record as a player and a coach, but also his ability to get the most out of life and the people he had the opportunity to work with. He is also one of the most quoted people in the performance realm because of his ability
to take complicated matters and trim it down to a simple concept or quote.
In one of his many books, Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court, Mr. Wooden shared a story that was told to him about how WE observe the world around us:
There’s an old story about a fellow who went to a small town in Indiana with the thought of possibly moving his family there. “What kind of people live around here?” he asked the attendant at the local gas station.
“Well,” the attendant replied as he checked the oil, “what kind of people live back where you’re from?” The visitor took a swallow of his cherry soda and replied, “They’re ornery, mean, and dishonest!”
The attendant looked up and answered, “Mister, you’ll
find them about like that around here, too.”
A few weeks later, another gentleman stopped by the gas station on a muggy July afternoon with the same question.
“Excuse me,” he said as he wiped his brow. “I’m thinking about moving to your town with my family. What kind of people live around here?”
Again, the attendant asked, “Well, what kind of people live back where you’re from?”
The stranger thought for a moment and replied, “I find them to be kind, decent, and honest folks.”
The gas station attendant looked up and said, “Mister, you’ll find them about like that around here, too.”
It’s so true. You often find what you’re looking for. By the time you read this WE will be well on our way growing again. South Georgia towns of Albany, Douglas, and Valdosta will have Worldwide Equipment dealerships located there. I am excited to welcome the new employees and customers to our company.
A couple of years ago I was meeting with employees at a dealership WE were acquiring. I was answering questions about benefits, vacations, uniforms, and a variety of questions about how things might be the same or different.
One young man asked, ”Why are you buying this dealership”?
My answer was rather simple. Because the people here are just like us. Hardworking, honest, caring people, that want to be successful. People that want to take care of their family and have pride in the job they do.
WE find them to be a lot like that around here too….. It was that way in Cincinnati and Abingdon in 1992. Lexington and Somerset in 1993. Knoxville in 1996. Chattanooga in 1998 and then again in 2003. Dayton Ohio in 2007. Charleston WV in 2010. South Carolina in 2011. The rest of West Virginia in 2016, and today in South Georgia.
WE found folks to be a lot like that around here too….just like us.
I find it everywhere I go; most likely it is because I am looking for it!
Perhaps the saying “perception is reality” came from the exact same story. How WE view the world around us is often given right back to us, just as the gas station attendant pointed out. It goes back to the age-old saying, “treat others how you would like to be treated.” If 2020 has taught us anything this far, it’s that having respect and understanding for all those we share this experience called life with is absolutely vital. Let’s look for and find the kind, decent, honest side in all of us, starting with ourselves. Be kind to each other! WE can find that around here too…. Thank you for all that you do.
“‘You often find what you’re looking for.”
WE asked you to submit to us your success stories, events, and family updates, and your response was astounding! See what the rest of your WE family has been up to.

Take a look at what these young artists had to offer.
appreciate to have the opportunity to be able to use the F150 that was presented to me last week. This is only possible because of the dedication and hard work from all those at the Cincinnati division especially all those in the service department: technicians, service advisors and supervisors. Our goal is to take care of our customers needs and without the help from every member on my team this would not happen. Thank you to all, I will enjoy this perk.
It is and honor and privilege to receive the award and reward. For some it may not seem like a big deal, as for my team we relish the accomplishment.
Its obvious that the Reward (F150 Platinum Ford) for the parts manager is one hell of a reward, it was well earned and deserved, also very much appreciated.
The Award for our parts Team is FOREVER. Some of my team members can recall when this store was nothing. We owe a special thank you to these men Tim Lockard, Mike Taylor and JJ Fleenor, for putting the effort in even when the future looked grim.
