The place in which the Founding Master Sotaesan was born. There, he also grew up, attained enlightenment after his ascetic search for the truth, and, finally, initiated the new religion of Won Buddhism under the motto: 'With this Great Opening of matter, Let there be a Great Opening of spirit.

On May 5, 1891, the Founding Master Sotaesan (Joongbin Park, 1891~1943) was born in this house. He spent his childhood here until 1901.

This is the place where the Founding Master lived and used as the office. Later Venerable Chŏngsan also stayed there.

A sage engages in mind study so that they may utilize that capability of mind when facing sensory conditions.

From the age of 11 to 15, the Founding Master Sotaesan offered his prayers at this site. Starting at age 7, he developed deep questions about the principles of the universe and nature. Beginning at age 11, he climbed to Madang Rock on Sabat Pass every day for five years to engage in a life of prayer.

Sacred Monument of the Founding Master Sotaesan
This stone monument was erected to commemorate the Founding Master's achievements. The epitaph was composed by Venerable Chŏngsan, and written on the monument by the calligrapher, Gangam Seong‐Yong Song.

Gonghoedang, Public Hall

Gonghoedang served initially as both a public hall and a silkworm nursery. Before the Great Enlightenment Hall (Daegakjeon) was built, a variety of ceremonies and retreats were held at Gonghoedang. The building became home to 'Yuil‐Haklim', which is now Wonkwang University.


The Founding Master's ashes are preserved in The Sacred Pagoda. This pagoda was erected to the everlasting memory of the Founding Master's holy will and life.
