MIND STUDY MAGAZINE (마음공부 매거진) has been preparing to discuss and share the meaning of “Mind Study” and its general usage, as well as topics such as meditation, practice, spirituality, and grace since the spring of 2021. In 2024, we took our first official step in this journey. Established in 2014, Won Media has been instrumental in the production of this magazine.

The inaugural issue is especially meaningful as it was printed and bound entirely by Won Media. We acknowledge that there may be shortcomings, and we will strive to improve continuously. Great Enlightenment Day’s Message 대각개교절 법문

The Path of Humanity As we celebrate Great Enlightenment Day, I sincerely pray that the light of awakening and grace fill the paths of all of humanity and all sentient beings.

All beings manifest meaning and value when they fulfill their inherent nature. Likewise, humans are truly beautiful when walking with the dignity of humaneness.

Sotaesan, the Founding Master of Won Buddhism, said, “Humans are the masters of all things, and all things are for use by human beings.”

THE HEAD DHARMA MASTER OF WON BUDDHISM USA

Venerable Juksan (Do-kook Hwang) is the first Head Dharma Master of Won Buddhism USA. Venerable Juksan was officially appointed the Head Dharma Master of Won Buddhism USA included Latin America in January 12th, 2021. All of the Won Buddhism temples and centers in the Americas are being guided by the spiritual leadership of Venerable Juksan.

The attitude and mindset with which humans relate to and use all things lay the foundation for all peace

or chaos in individuals, families, societies, and the world. When the path of humanity is established and

illuminated, this world will become a peaceful and harmonious paradise.

As we greet the month of the Great Enlightenment of

Sotaesan, the Founding Master of Won Buddhism, it would be wonderful to study and contemplate the five paths that Master Daesan, the Third Head Dharma Master of Won Buddhism, taught: the five paths that illuminate and benefit the path for all humans.

First is In-saeng (人生): living together harmoniously in such a way that gives life to all living beings.

Second is In-gan (人間): walking on the middle way and living in right relationship.

Third is In-do (人道): living according to the righteous

Cultivation, Inquiry, and Choice in Action.

Fourth is In-jeong (人情): always being compassionate and faithful, while always gratefully reciprocating the

great grace of the Fourfold Grace.

Last is In-bon (人本): always contemplate the root of any matter and regard all worldly affairs as if they were our own.

By embracing and studying these five teachings as the standard of our practice, and nurturing

our lives accordingly, we will restore the dignity of humanity and live harmoniously with all people. Let us all become great protagonists who manifest the true value of human life by learning and walking the way of humanity.

사람답게 사는 길 대각개교절을 맞이하여 온 인류와 생령들의 앞길에 깨달음과 은혜의 빛이 충만하기를 염원합니다.

사람은 사람다움의 품격을 지닐 때 아름답습니다. 만물도 또한 만물다울 때 그 의미와 가치가 발현됩니다. “사람

은 만물의 주인이요, 만물은 사람의 사용할 바”입니다. 사람이 만물을 어떤 자세와 마음가짐으로 대하고 사용하느 냐에 따라 개인과 가정과 사회와 세상의 평화와 혼란의 기점이 달라집니다. 사람다움의 도가 바로 설 때 이 세상은 평화롭고 서로 넘나드는 낙원세상을 이루게 될 것입니다.

대각의 달을 맞이하여 대산종사께서 사람답게 사는 길이요, 온 인류가 잘 사는 길로 밝혀주신 다섯 가지 공부를 함 께 하면 좋겠습니다.

첫째는 인생(人生)이니, 생명을 살리는 방향으로 같이 살자 하셨습니다. 둘째는 인간(人間)이니, 중도를 잡아 알맞게 살자 하셨습니다.

셋째는 인도(人道)니, 인도는 바른 길(正道)로 사는 것이요, 바른 길로 살려면 삼학을 공부하도록 하셨습니다. 넷째는 인정(人情)이니, 인정(人情)과 신의(信義)를 지키되 사은의 크신 은혜에 보은하며 살자 하셨습니다. 다섯째는 인본(人本) 이니, 무슨 일이든지 그 근본을 생각하고 세상일을 내일로 알고 살자 하셨습니다.

이 다섯 가지 말씀을 표준삼아 공부해나가고 삶을 가꾸어 나간다면 사람으로서 사람다운 품위를 갖게 될 것이요,

두루 모든 사람과 원만한 관계를 맺게 될 것이니, 우리는 사람으로서 지켜야 할 도를 잘 알아 생의 가치를 발현하 는 주인공들이 됩시다.

represents the path of grain or the digestive tract, including the anus. While it’s easy to interpret this as tightening the anus, it’s not the intention. Instead, the focus should be on

the perineum, the area between the genitals and the anus, facilitating energy concentration

in the lower abdomen (elixir field, danjeon).

Focusing here helps gather energy effectively

at the lower abdomen, naturally leading to a slight contraction of the anus. However,

artificially tensing the anus while seated can block breathing by obstructing the upper stomach.

Releasing unnecessary tension is crucial both in meditation, which polishes the mind, and in

sports, which conditions the body. The

beauty of meditation lies in mastering both

concentration and relaxation, using them interchangeably as needed. When the body relaxes, the mind follows, allowing freedom in both focus and relaxation.

※ Sotaesan Park, Joongbin : The person who opened the door of Won Buddhism. His childhood name is Cheohwa (處 化), Jinseop (鎭燮) and his name recorded on his family tree is Heeseop (喜燮). Joongbin is his dharma name and his

dharma title is Sotaesan (少太山). His honored name of the Order of Won Buddhism is Great Master (大宗師) and the Holy Honored One of Perfect Enlightenment (圓覺聖尊). Born on May 5, 1891 (Mar. 27 by lunar calendar) in an ordinary farm, located in the village of Yeongchon, Gilryong-ri, Baeksu-myeon, Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do, as the third son of four sons and two daughters under his father Park Hee-gyeong and his mother Yoo Jeong-cheon.

After a long period of ascetic practices with the will of the truth since childhood, he attained great enlightenment of the truth of Il-Won-Sang on April 28, 1916 and founded Won Buddhism.

Rev. Park, Dae Sung majored in Won Buddhism and Philosophy at Wonkwang

University, received a master's degree in ‘Comparison of Practice Theory between Won Buddhism and Early Buddhism’ from Won Buddhism Graduate University, and completed a doctoral program in Transpersonal Psychology at Seoul

Buddhism Graduate University. He has been working as a minister since 2008

(WBY 92), and served as the editor-in-chief of Hanulan Newspaper and a professor at Won Buddhism Graduate University, and is currently working in the Dept. of

Culture and Social Affairs, Won Buddhism Central Headquarters.

The published meditation story on the above is included in his book, “The First Meditation of My Life.”

움이 되지 않는 것으로 판단하여 고행을 접고, 중도(中 道)의 실천을 통해 도를 깨치셨다고 합니다.

소태산 대종사도 마찬가지로 처음 마음을 내어[發心] 수행하던 시절 극심한 고행으로 몸이 상하는 지경에

이르기도 하여, 후대 제자들에게는 자신이 제시한 대

을지 몰라도 실제로 그렇게 앉아서는 기운을 아래로

지언정 헛된 고행은 하지 말라고 가르치셨습니다. 우

니다. 그러므로 허리를 곧추 세우되 가슴에 힘을 빼고

승[大乘 : 누구나 쉽게 할 수 있는 방법] 수행을 본받을

리는 명상은 유별나고 독특한 사람만 한다는 고정관념 을 갖는 경우가 많습니다. 이전에는 그런 방식으로 가

르친 경우도 없지 않았지만 “극히 간단하고 편이하여 아무라도 행할 수 있다”는 소태산 대종사의 말씀에 주 목해야 합니다.

이 말씀은 단순한 격려 차원에서 하는 말씀이 아니라 사실이 그렇다는 것입니다. 그러나 우리 인간의 몸은

내리기 어렵고 호흡이 도리어 명치끝에 걸리기 쉽습 등을 평평하게 펴는 자세가 필

요합니다. 말 그대로 가슴[명치 끝]을 자연스럽게 가라앉히고, 어깨와 팔꿈치를 편안히 떨어뜨 린 상태에서 등의 좌우 견갑골 사이가 충분히 펼쳐지게 하는 것입니다.

원불교의 종법사를 역임한 대산 김대거 종사(1914~1998)는 좌

선을 할 때 ‘허리를 반듯이’ 세워 ‘요골수립(腰骨竪立)’ 할 것을

합니다. 가슴을 지나치게 펴게

됩니다. 반대로 지나치게 가슴을 오므려도 한쪽에 치 우치게 됩니다. 가슴을 활짝 폈을 때와 오므렸을 때에

어느 쪽이 숨을 쉬는 데 편한지 실험해 보면 전신에 힘 을 뺀 다음 가슴과 등이 고루 평평한 자세일 때 호흡이

훨씬 편하다는 것을 쉽게 알 수 있습니다. 그런 뒤에 전 신의 힘을 단전에 툭 내려놓기에 적합해집니다.

중요하며 다음에는 가슴에 힘을

빼고 꼬리뼈를 뒤로 밀듯이 세우면 기본적인 요골수립 이 가능합니다.

우선 힘을 빼세요. 우리가 명상의 자세에 대해서 한 가지 오해하기 쉬운 것이 허리를 꼿꼿이 세우는 요골수립을 한다고 자칫

잘못하면 가슴을 과하게 쭉 내밀 듯이 펴야 된다고 생 각하는 경우가 있습니다. 사실 이 자세가 보기에는 좋

‘요골수립’과 한 쌍을 이루는 문장이 ‘긴찰곡도(緊紮穀

道)’입니다. 여기서 ‘긴찰’은 긴장과 이완을 의미하는 것이고, ‘곡도’는 곡식(穀食)의 길, 소화기 계통의 내장

또는 항문을 의미합니다. 일반적으로 항문을 꽉 조인 다는 의미로 이해하기 쉽습니다. 사람이 숨을 거둘 경

우 가장 먼저 풀어지는 부위가 항문이라고 합니다. 반

면에 평상시에는 의식하지 않아도 저절로 긴장되는 부 위이기도 합니다.

그러나 ‘긴찰곡도’는 항문(肛門)을 의도적으로 조이라

면 그 부위가 경직되고 막히게 됩니다. 막히면 기가 한

이 아니기 때문입니다. 엄밀히 말하자면 사람의 생식기

위해서라면 우선적으로 내려놓는 연습을 해야 합니다.

무술이나 스포츠 등에 관심이 있으신 분들이 처음 수련 을 시작할 때 공통적으로 ‘힘을 빼라’는 조언을 듣게 됩

니다. 우리가 신체 어느 부위든 인위적인 힘을 주게 되

위가 있습니다. 저는 학창 시절에 어깨에 힘을 주고 다

에 대해 심리적으로 볼 때 어깨에 힘을 준다는 것은 자

신을 과시하려는 동기가 담겨 있다고 해석할 수 있습니 다. 또 다른 예로 평소에 허리가 긴장되어 있다면 불안 감이 그 원인이 될 수 있습니다. 자신이 평상시에 어느

부위에 무의식적으로 힘을 주거나 긴장하는지 몸에 대 하여 알아차리는 것도 좋은 명상의 주제가 됩니다.

불필요한 긴장을 놓는 것은 마음을 닦는 명상이나 몸을 닦는 스포츠나 같은 원리가 적용됩니다. 특히 명상은 집중 이나 이완 중 어느 하나를 선택해야 하는 것이 아니라, 이 둘을 자유자재로 활용하는 것을 배우는 것에 그 묘미가 있습니다. 몸에 힘이 빠져야 마음에 힘이 빠집니다. 그다음에 집중도 이완도 자유롭게 할 수 있습니다.

Sŏn and Mind Study

Venerable Sotaesan’s Dharma of Sŏn1) In the first sentence of “The Dharma of Timeless Sŏn” in The Principal Book of Won Buddhism, Venerable Sotaesan begins, “As a rule, Sŏn is a practice that leads to the achievement of freedom of mind through awakening to one’s own nature, which is originally free from discrimination or attachment. Since time immemorial, those who have been determined to achieve the great

Way have all practiced Sŏn.” This means that the practice of Sŏn is an absolute necessity for

those who have set their hearts and minds on the great Way. But what exactly is meant by “great Way” here? The great Way is the ultimate Truth underlying all of existence as discovered

by the buddhas, saints, and sages of the three times—the Truth which, when realized, brings final liberation, freedom, and happiness that all sentient beings are seeking to attain. This book aims to introduce readers to the method of Sŏn as taught by the Founding Master Sotaesan, one

of the great buddha-sages of our recent past. Through this book, I hope to provide beginning practitioners of meditation an easier entry point to the vast and sometimes overwhelming world of Sŏn, which eventually leads to Ven. Sotaesan’s ultimate practice of Timeless Sŏn in which all distinctions between our ordinary life and spiritual life are dissolved.

The Principal Book of Won Buddhism, which Venerable Sotaesan wrote himself, expounds on two kinds of Sŏn: Seated Meditation and Timeless Meditation. In “The Dharma of Seated

Meditation,” Venerable Sotaesan emphasizes the need for resting awareness in the elixir field (danjeon), which has led to Venerable Sotaesan’s method of meditation sometimes being called

“The Dharma of Resting in the Elixir Field.” Venerable Sotaesan himself, however, never referred to his method as “The Dharma of Resting in the Elixir Field” in his writings. Rather, his method

centers around the Threefold Study of “Cultivating the Spirit” (jeongsin suyang), “Inquiry into

Human Affairs and Universal Principles” (sari yeongu), and “Mindful Choice in Action” (jageop chwisa). The Threefold Study of Won Buddhism is closely linked to the Threefold Training of

traditional Buddhism (śīla, samādhi, prajñā), with “Cultivating the Spirit” mirroring samadhi (meditation), “Inquiry into Human Affairs and Universal Principles” mirroring prajna (wisdom), and “Mindful Choice in Action” mirroring sila (moral conduct). Venerable Sotaesan also classified

his method of spiritual practice into Fixed-Term Training and Daily Training, each of which provides various points of spiritual discipline. Seated Meditation and Yeombul (reciting the name 21

of the Buddha) comprise the “Cultivating the Spirit” portion out of the 11 enumerated points of Fixed-Term Training. This may give off the impression that the Dharma of Timeless Sŏn is only one form of Cultivating the Spirit. But the Dharma of Timeless Sŏn cannot just be reduced to a

method of Cultivating the Spirit. The Dharma of Timeless Sŏn is rather encapsulated within the entire Threefold Study. Speaking in terms of Fixed-Term and Daily Training, Timeless Sŏn can be

said to be the Threefold Study of Daily Training. Venerable Sotaesan specifically called Timeless Sŏn “the method of practice in which we progress in concert through the Threefold Study.”

2. Sŏn, the Dharma of Using the Mind2) If the practice of Sŏn (Meditation) is confined only within the meditation room under formal

meditation time, then this cannot be said to be a true and comprehensive practice of Sŏn. A baseball player must take his practice out into the playing field instead of sitting on the cushion

all day, and a swimmer must likewise take her practice out into the waters. If a spiritual practitioner just sits on the meditation cushion all day and does nothing else, then that person is practicing seated meditation but not real Sŏn. Unless one is a beginning practitioner learning the

basics of Sŏn through seated meditation, focusing only on seated meditation will make us miss 22

the essence and true purpose of Sŏn.

Regarding the true purpose of Sŏn, the Founding Master Sotaesan, in his Dharma of Timeless Sŏn, states: “As a rule, Sŏn is a practice that leads to the of freedom of mind through gaining

awakening to one’s own nature, which is originally free from discrimination or attachment. Since time immemorial, those who have been determined to achieve the great Way have all practiced Sŏn.” In short, achieving freedom of mind is the purpose of Sŏn, and to achieve this freedom we must each awaken to our own true nature. Venerable Sotaesan’s Sŏn is thus the dharma of using the mind properly for the benefit of both oneself and others.

The Founding Master continued, “In today’s world, as material civilization has developed, the knowledge and skills of scholars, farmers, artisans, and merchants have made great advances; the implements of life have become much fancier, and people’s eyes and minds have been

seduced by these flashy products. In contrast, the human spirit, which should be making use of those material things, has become so weak that it cannot but be enslaved by the material, rather than the master of it. This is truly a disturbing situation. No matter how good a material thing

in this world might be, if the mind that makes use of it is not upright, that thing will instead be abused. No matter how great the knowledge and fine the skill of a person, if the mind that

makes use of them is not upright, they will instead be used to harm the public. No matter how good one’s surroundings, if the mind that makes use of them is not upright, they will instead be used to promote transgressive actions. No matter how dazzling all of external civilization

under heaven, whether it makes the world better or worse depends solely upon how well the

dharma of applying the mind is managed. If we make use of our minds rightly, then all of

civilization will become instrumental in helping to construct a paradise; but if we do not, then

all of civilization will instead become like supplying weapons to thieves. Therefore, you all must

rouse yourselves now, and diligently learn the dharma of using the mind, which is the master of

all dharmas. Become the pilot of your own mind, who in thousands of sensory conditions always use everything wholesomely by considering the benefit to both yourself and others. Accordingly, you must exert yourselves in both aspects of the material and the spiritual in order to construct a single truly civilized world, by disseminating to others the method of piloting the mind.”3)

This teaching nicely summarizes Venerable Sotaesan’s life philosophy. He laments how human

beings have become enslaved by the material and speaks about how he came to found a new religion. To address this problem of material enslavement, Venerable Sotaesan states that we

must each learn to use our minds well (the dharma of using the mind). Only when people become masters of their own minds, Venerable Sotaesan maintains, can a single truly civilized world integrating both the material and the spiritual be constructed.

Venerable Sotaesan’s Sŏn is the practice of cultivating the mind, which means knowing the

mind’s true nature, nurturing the mind’s innate capacities, and using the mind well for the benefit of oneself and others. Since Sŏn is all about the mind, our spiritual practice need not be

bound to any particular place or time, as the mind is always with us no matter the place or time.

Venerable Sotaesan even taught spirits that have left their bodies in this life to cultivate the mind.

Moreover, he taught us to utilize this practice of attaining freedom of mind for the rest of our

lives. Where the spiritual rubber hits the road is right here and now in the very midst of our lives.

First, we must be able to change our lives for the better if we want to help change the world. This

is why Venerable Sotaesan taught the Dharma of Timeless Sŏn in the first place. Our minds are

always with us, so how can we limit Sŏn or the practice of cultivating our minds to a particular

location or time? A true practice of Sŏn happens regardless of whether we are walking, standing, sitting, reclining, speaking or keeping silent, active or at rest-a true “timeless” Sŏn.

선과 마음공부 글. 최정풍 1. 소태산 대종사의 수행법과 선(禪) 소태산 대종사는 무시선법의 첫 문장을 “대

범, 선(禪)이라 함은 원래에 분별 주착이 없는 각자의 성품을 오득하여 마음의 자유를 얻게

하는 공부인 바, 예로부터 큰 도에 뜻을 둔 사

람으로서 선을 닦지 아니한 일이 없나니라.” 라고 시작하고 있습니다. 큰 도에 뜻을 둔 사

람이라면 선 공부를 하지 않을 수 없다는 말 입니다. 여기서 ‘큰 도’란 무엇일까요. 부처님

들과 성현님들이 찾고자 했던 진리이고 그들

이 모든 인류에게 전하고 가르쳐주고자 했던 자유과 구원, 그리고 행복의 길일 것입니다.

소태산 대종사께서 직접 저술한『정전』에 나

오는 선(禪)의 종류는 두 가지입니다. 첫째는 ‘좌선법’이고 둘째는 ‘무시선법’입니다. 좌선

법 안에는 ‘단전주의 필요’라는 내용이 있어 서 소태산 대종사의 좌선법을 ‘단전주선법’이

라고 하기도 하지만 엄밀히 말해서 그의 저작 25

중에서 ‘단전주선법’이란 표현은 등장하지 않습니다. 소태산 대종사의 수행법은 정신수양 · 사리연구 · 작업취사로 이뤄진 삼학(三學)이 중심입니다. 정신수양은 정

(定), 사리연구는 혜(慧), 작업취사는 계(戒)로 불교의 삼학과 연결 지을 수 있습니다. 소태산 대종사의 수행은 정기

와 상시로 나누어서 정기훈련법과 상시훈련법으로 제시하고 있으며 각 훈련법마다 다양한 훈련과목들이 제시되어

있습니다. 정기훈련 11과목 가운데 정신수양 훈련 과목은 좌선과 염불 두 가지입니다. 무시선법은 정신수양 과목 인 좌선법의 한 종류인 것처럼 볼 수 있지만 무시선법은 단순히 정신수양 과목이라 할 수 없습니다. 삼학 수행 전 체의 내용이 녹아들어 있는 선법이라고 할 수 있습니다. 무시선법을 정기와 상시로 나누자면 ‘상시로 하는 선 수행’

또는 ‘상시로 하는 삼학 수행’이라고 할 수 있습니다. 소태산 대종사는 무시선법을 ‘삼학을 병진하는 공부법’이라고 하였습니다.

2. 선, 마음 사용법 선(명상)이 선방 안에 국한되고, 선이 좌선 시간에만 국한된다면 그것은 선을 모르기 때문에 생기는 일입니다. 야구

선수는 방구석이 아니라 야구장에서 연습해야 하고 그럴 수밖에 없습니다. 수영 선수도 마찬가지죠. 결국은 물이 있는 곳에서 헤엄을 쳐야 합니다. 진정한 선 공부(수행)는 일상 생활, 천만 경계 속에서 해야 하는 것과 같습니다.

만일 수행자가 선방에서 좌선에만 매진한다면 그 사람은 좌선을 하는 것이지 진정한 의미의 온전한 선을 수행하는

것이 아닙니다. 물론 선의 기초를 닦기 위해서 좌선 수행을 하는 것이라면 좌선과 선이 둘이 아니므로 별문제가 없 겠지요. 하지만 좌선 수행이 선 공부의 전부라고 생각한다면 그 사람은 선의 목적과 본질을 놓치고 있는 것입니다.

소태산 대종사는 무시선법에서 선의 목적을 “대범, 선(禪)이라 함은 원래에 분별 주착이 없는 각자의 성품을 오득

하여 마음의 자유를 얻게 하는 공부인 바, 예로부터 큰 도에 뜻을 둔 사람으로서 선을 닦지 아니한 일이 없나니라.” 라고 설(說)합니다. 마음의 자유를 얻기 위한 공부가 선이고, 이를 위해서는 각자의 성품을 깨달아야 한다고 본 것 입니다. 요컨대, 소태산의 선은 용심법, 마음 사용법인 것입니다.

“또 말씀하시기를 [지금 세상은 물질문명의 발전을 따라 사 · 농 · 공 · 상에 대한 학식과 기술이 많이 진보되었으

며, 생활 기구도 많이 화려하여졌으므로 이 화려한 물질에 눈과 마음이 황홀하여지고 그 반면에 물질을 사용하는

정신은 극도로 쇠약하여, 주인된 정신이 도리어 물질의 노예가 되고 말았으니 이는 실로 크게 근심될 현상이라. 이

세상에 아무리 좋은 물질이라도 사용하는 마음이 바르지 못하면 그 물질이 도리어 악용되고 마는 것이며, 아무리 좋은 재주와 박람 박식이라도 그 사용하는 마음이 바르지 못하면 그 재주와 박람 박식이 도리어 공중에 해독을 주 게 되는 것이며, 아무리 좋은 환경이라도 그 사용하는 마음이 바르지 못하면 그 환경이 도리어 죄업을 돕지 아니하

는가. 그러므로, 천하에 벌여진 모든 바깥 문명이 비록 찬란하다 하나 오직 마음 사용하는 법의 조종 여하에 따라

이 세상을 좋게도 하고 낮게도 하나니, 마음을 바르게 사용하면 모든 문명이 다 낙원을 건설하는데 보조하는 기관

이 되는 것이요, 마음을 바르지 못하게 사용하면 모든 문명이 도리어 도둑에게 무기를 주는 것과 같이 되나니라. 그 러므로, 그대들은 새로이 각성하여 이 모든 법의 주인이 되는 용심법(用心法)을 부지런히 배워서 천만 경계에 항상 자리 이타로 모든 것을 선용(善用)하는 마음의 조종사가 되며, 따라서 그 조종 방법을 여러 사람에게 교화하여 물 심 양면으로 한 가지 참 문명 세계를 건설하는 데에 노력할지어다.]” (원불교 경전, 『대종경』, 교의품 30장)

이 법문에는 소태산 대종사의 사상 전체가 잘 포함되어 있습니다. 소태산 대종사가 물질문명의 위기로 인해 사람

들이 물질의 노예 생활을 하게 된 것에 대한 안타까움을 토로하면서 새로운 종교의 문을 열게 된 배경을 말합니다.

이 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 사람들이 각자의 마음을 잘 사용해야 하는데 이를 위해서 용심법(用心法)을 제시합 니다. 이 마음 사용법을 언제 어디서든 활용해야만 하고 그렇게 해야 물질문명과 정신문명이 조화를 이루는 참 문 명 세계를 건설할 수 있다고 설합니다.

소태산 대종사에게 있어서 선이란 곧 마음공부입니다. 마음공부란 마음을 알아서, 마음을 잘 기르고, 마음을 잘 쓰

는 공부입니다. 선의 교재는 마음이어서 언제 어디서나 마음공부를 할 수 있습니다. 심지어 소태산 대종사는 몸을 떠난 영혼에게도 마음공부를 하라고 설합니다. 마음의 본질을 깨달아 진정한 마음의 자유를 얻는 공부를 인간 생

활 전반에 활용하라고 합니다. 마음공부 실력이 발휘되어야 할 곳은 바로 ‘지금, 여기’ 일상생활인 것입니다. 그렇

게 구체적인 현실의 삶을 변화시킬 수 있어야 결국은 새로운 참 문명도 건설할 수 있습니다. 이것이 소태산 대종사 가 마음공부를 이야기하고 무시선을 주창한 이유입니다. 사람이 마음을 떠나서 존재할 수 없는데 마음공부 즉 선

공부를 어떻게 특정한 시간과 장소에 국한 시킬 수 있겠습니까. 본래 선(禪), 마음공부란 행주좌와어묵동정(行住 座臥 語默動靜) 간에 한순간도 여윌 수 없는 것입니다. 그래서 선이란 원래 무시선입니다. 균산 최정풍(Choi, Jeong Pung) 교무는 원광대학교 원불교학과를 졸업하

고 1990년(원기 75년)부터 교무로 봉직하고 있습니다. 중앙대학교에서 석사 과정으로 교육학을 전공하였습니다. 전곡교당 교무, 노인전문요양원 은혜마

The Greatest Way in the World

by Na, Sang Ho A disciples once asked, “What is the great Way?” The Founding Master Sotaesan replied, “What

can be practiced by all people under heaven is the great Way under heaven. What can be practiced by only a limited group is the small Way. Therefore, our cardinal teaching of Il-Won,

along with the Fourfold Grace, the Four Essentials, the Threefold Study, and the Eight Articles,

is the great Way under heaven, which must be understood and can be practiced by all people under heaven.” In the Verse 2 of Doctrine (The Scripture of the Founder Master), ‘All people

under heaven’ means “everyone regardless of whether one is learned or ignorant, a man or woman, young or old, rich or poor, noble or common, and of any race.” This is because everyone has the original Buddha’s mind that ‘in the universe, only I exist (天上天下唯我獨尊)’ without discrimination.

The Founding Master further stated, “The teaching of the buddha dharma is the supreme Way of all under heaven. It illuminates the principle of the true nature, solves the crucial matter of birth

and death, elucidates the principle of cause and effect, commands the paths of practice, and thus

surpasses all other religious doctrines.”※ The teaching aligns with three things that practioners of mind study aim to achive, described

on Verse 2, Maxims, The Scripture of the Founding Master. The Founding Master said, “A practitioner of the Way seeks to know the mind in order to achieve freedom of mind, to understand the principle of birth and death in order to transcend birth and death, and to

understand the principle of transgression and blessings in order to control them as one pleases.”

By revealing the principle of true nature, the teaching of the buddha dharma enables us to

realize the mind and achieve freedom; by resolving the matter of life and death, it allows us to know the principle and transcend these; and by revealing the principles of cause and effect, it enables us to understand the principle and control transgression and blessings at will. The path of practice refers to achieving freedom of the mind, transcending life and death, and controlling transgression and blessings at will through the faith and practice of Il-Won-Sang.

1. What is the principle of true nature?

‘Being true’ implies ‘being eternal,’ ‘without arising and ceasing.’ The true nature refers to our

‘true self.’ The Founding Master Sotaesan explained the seated meditation in the Principal Book of Won Buddhism, “the seated meditation is a practice that, in the mind, calms deluded thoughts

and manifests the true nature.” Our own nature ‘which is originally free from discrimination and attachment’ described in the Dharma of Timeless Sŏn is the true nature, Jinseong (眞性).

Knowing the true nature, that is, Gyenseong (見性) is a teaching to awaken “Where is my origin?”

When a young monk asked his temple’s head monk for a meditative topic, the head monk

queried, “What was your original face before your parents gave you a birth?” The monk struggled

with this question until one day, seeing a defeated person in fighting in a market who apologized, ‘I have no face,’ he understood the meaning of his ‘original face.’

Some scientists and medical scientists may say, “Mind? Where is such a thing? That’s all about

the brain.” Since we can’t see it, it seems to be so concluded. It’s not just the mind that is invisible but is definitely there. It is also present in electricity. To know where the electricity is, you just have to switch off and on. If you ask where the air is, you can take a long breath and then exhale.

Then you smile when you understood while watching it.

Nature! This is the invisible me, so where is the visible me? It is as if there is a mind ground and one mind arises when it is caught in sensory conditions. Only when we recognize this mind, we

can use it freely. The awakened one can see it and use the mind and body properly, and when he

interacts with others, he can see the true nature in them and make buddha offerings. Those who do not realize it or do not see it will either live as they can or build another karma. As they can’t see the true nature in people, they can’t make buddha offerings easily.

When someone asks, “What is life and death?,” one might say, “It’s breathing.” Life and death are in the nature of breathing. When we say “something big happened,” we are talking about something unexpectedly serious. When it comes to a great matter, life and death is a change. It

means not to get stuck with the ‘me’ that lies in the midst of change. If we cling to it, it can be suffering and that is the cause of agony. The suffering of the birth, old age, sickness, and death,

seeing that suffering rightly and freeing oneself from it is called liberation and transcendence.

If you solve the big matter of life and death, you will be free from life and death. It is said that

the birth, old age, sickness and death are like spring, summer, autumn and winter. It means a

change. Just as the death we experience is not the end, but we fall asleep and wake up, those who are awakened know it as a change, and those who do not realize it call it ‘life and death.’

It was when the Founding Master Sotaesan assigned the first dharma name to his disciple Kim Kicheon. Sotaesan said to him, “You may have considerable knowledge of Chinese because you

have served as a headmaster of village school, but what use is it if you do not understand the principles of heaven and earth and can not transcend life and death?,” “What if you set your

dharma name as Ki (幾) which means ‘how many’ and Cheon (千) which means ‘one thousand’?

Compared to the vastness of the universe, human lifespan is only a blink of an eye. So let’s devote to awaken yourself to the truth.” Kim Kicheon receives confirmation for Gyenseong (見性) from the Founding Master during his lifetime.

2. Solving the crucial matter of life and death When someone asks, “What is life and death?,” one might say, “It’s breathing.” Life and death are in the breathing. When we say “something big happened,” we are talking about something

unexpectedly serious. When it comes to a great matter, life and death is a change. Don’t get stuck

A minister went to the hospital. She met two people, one who had served as a high-ranking government official and had a friendly relationship with her, and the other was an elderly

laywoman. The high-ranking person grabbed the minister's hand and pleaded saying, “Please

save me. Please pray for me.” The minister prayed for him fervently, and then, she went to the

old laywoman in another room, and when the minister finished praying, she said, “I bought a train ticket, but I can’t leave because the ticket gate is not working.” In the past, ticket inspectors had to check the ticket before passengers enter the platform. That’s why I say.

3. Elucidating the principle of cause and effect By what reason is all the karma that comes before me carried out during the years of my life? It is the principle of cause and effect that I receive what I have made. The instruction of Repentance

said, “there is not a hair’s breadth of uncertainty that those who perform good actions will subsequently receive a corresponding life-giving reward, while those who perform bad actions

will be repaid with a corresponding harmful retribution.” If you know and practice this, you are the one who knows the way to practice the principle of cause and effect.

A temple member who had been absent for a while returned, expressing fear after hearing teachings on karma. I told him, “There’s nothing to fear. You might have created it, but how you receive and respond to it makes a difference. Thus, instead of wasting time, cultivate your abilities diligently.”

4. Commanding the paths of practice Practice is not just about spiritual cultivation; it includes the entire journey of faith and practice.

Following these teachings leads to a realization of our true nature, resolution of life’s profound questions, and a clear understanding of karma, thus fostering the creation of blessings and good deeds.

As said in the Il-Won-Sang Vow, we deluded beings vow modeling ourselves wholeheartedly

on this Il-Won-Sang, the Dharmakāya Buddha, and practicing with utmost devotion to keep our mind and body perfectly, to know human affairs and universal principles perfectly, and to

use our mind and body perfectly, and progressing rather than regressing and receiving grace rather than harm. The path of practice that we have to follow by knowing the Buddha Dharma is elucidated in the Principal Book of Won Buddhism.

We are fortunate that we are on the greatest way in the world, so I pray that we all will engage in mind study diligently and live wisely and happily with a generous mind. ※ Verse 3, The Prologue, The Scripture of the Founding Master, Won Buddhism Rev. Na, Sang Ho (An Ho) entered the Won Buddhist priesthood in 1990. He

worked in the Edification Training Department and the Planning office of the

Board of Administration, in the Won Buddhism Central Headquarters, as well as in Bundang Temple and Gangnam Temple. He is serving now as the Chief Administrator of Won Buddhism Central Headquarters.

세상에서 가장 큰길 글. 나상호 한 제자가 소태산 대종사에게 여쭸습니다. “어떠한 것이 큰 도입니까?” 이에 대종사는 “천하 사람이 다 행할 수 있는 것 은 천하의 큰 도요, 적은 수만 행할 수 있는 것은 작은 도이다.”라고 하시고 “우리의 일원종지와 사은사요, 삼학팔조는

온 천하 사람이 다 알아야 하고 다 실행할 수 있으므로 천하의 큰 도가 된다.”고 말씀하셨습니다.『대종경』교의품 2장’

의 ‘천하 사람’이란 “유무식, 남녀노소, 빈부귀천, 인종을 막론하고 누구나 다”를 뜻합니다. 이것은 누구에게나 차별 없이 천상천하유아독존(天上天下唯 我獨尊)한 부처님의 마음이 본래 있기 때문입니다.

소태산 대종사는 “불법은 천하의 큰 도이다.”라고 말씀하셨는데, 그 이유로 “참된 성품의 원리를 밝히고 생사의 큰일을

해결하며 인과의 이치를 드러내고 수행의 길을 갖추어서 능히 모든 교법에 뛰어난 바 있다.”고 하셨습니다. 『대종경』 ( 서품 3장)

이 법문은 마음공부하는 사람이 구하는 바 세가지에 대해 설명한 『대종경』요훈품 ‘ 2장’과 맞닿아 있습니다. 즉, “마음

을 알아 마음의 자유를 얻고, 생사의 원리를 알아 생사를 초월하고, 죄복의 이치를 알아 죄복을 임의로 하자는 것”이 그 것입니다. 불법(佛法)은 참된 성품[眞性]의 원리를 밝혔으므로 그에 따라 마음을 알아 마음의 자유를 얻는 것이요, 불법

으로 생사의 큰일을 해결할 수 있으므로 그에 따라 생사의 원리를 알아 생사를 초월하는 것이며, 불법이 인과의 이치를 드러냈으므로 그에 따라 죄복의 이치를 알아 죄복을 임의로 하는 능력을 얻게 되는 것입니다. 수행의 길이란 일원상의 신앙과 일원상의 수행으로 마음의 자유를 얻는 길, 생사를 초월하는 길, 죄복을 임의로 하는 길을 말합니다.

1. 참된 성품의 원리란 무엇일까? ‘참되다’라는 것은 ‘영원하다’, ‘생멸이 없다’라는 뜻입니다. 참된 성품은 진성(眞性), 즉 ‘참나’를 말합니다. 소태산 대종사 는『정전』좌선법에 “좌선이라 함은 마음에 있어 망념을 쉬고, 진성을 나타내는 공부”라고 하였지요. 무시선법에서 말

씀하신 ‘원래에 분별 주착이 없는’ 나의 성품이 곧 ‘진성(眞性)’, 참된 성품입니다. 참된 성품을 아는 것, 즉 견성(見性)은 ‘나의 근원이 어디에 있는가?’를 자각하게 하는 가르침입니다.

어느 절 방장 스님께 젊은 스님이 화두를 내려 달라하니 방장 스님이 물었습니다. “부모가 너를 낳기 전의 본래면목이 무

엇이냐?” 젊은 스님은 대답을 못했습니다. 오래오래 화두를 걸고 있다가 어느 날 시장 한복판에서 싸움하는 것을 보게 되었습니다. 싸움에 진 사람이 사과하는데 “면목 없습니다.”라고 하자 스님은 그 말에 본래면목의 의미를 깨닫게 되었습 니다.

과학자나 의학자 중에는 “마음? 그런 게 어디 있나? 그게 다 뇌의 작용이지.”라고도 합니다. 눈에 안 보이니 그렇게 단정

하는 듯합니다. 눈에 안 보이지만 분명히 있는 게 마음만 있는 것은 아닙니다. 전기에도 있습니다. 전기가 어디에 있는지

알려면 스위치를 껐다가 켜면 됩니다. 공기가 어디 있냐고 물으면 숨을 길게 들이쉬었다가 내쉬면 됩니다. 그럼 그걸 보 고 알았다며 미소를 짓습니다.

성품! 이것은 보이지 않는 나인데, 그럼 보이는 나는 어디에 있는가? 마치 심지(心地)가 있는데 경계를 당하여 한마음을 일으키는 것과 같습니다. 이 마음을 알아야 마음을 자유로 쓸 수 있습니다. 깨달은 이는 그것을 보고 알아서 그에 따라 심신작용을 하고, 다른 사람을 대할 때도 그 참모습을 보고 불공을 합니다. 그것을 깨닫지 못했거나 보지 못하는 분은 되 는대로 살거나 또 그렇게 업을 짓게 됩니다. 다른 사람에게서도 참모습을 못 보니 불공이 잘 안되는 것입니다.

“생사가 무엇인가?” 하고 물으니 “숨 쉬는 것이지요.”라고 답합니다. 생사가 호흡에 있다는 것이지요. 우리가 “큰일났 다”라고 할 때는 예기치 않은 일이 있을 때를 말합니다. 큰일이라고 할 때 생사(生死)는 변화(變化)입니다. 변화하는 그 사이에 있는 ‘나’ 에 집착하지 말라는 것입니다. 집착하면 그것이 고(苦)이고 그것이 괴로움의 원인입니다. 생로병사(生 老病死)의 괴로움, 그 괴로움을 바로 보고 벗어나는 것을 해탈, 초월이라 합니다. 생사의 큰일을 해결하면 생사에 자유자

재하게 됩니다. 우리의 생로병사는 봄, 여름, 가을, 겨울과 같다고 합니다. 변화를 의미합니다. 우리가 겪게 되는 죽음도 그것으로써 끝이 아니라 잠이 들었다 깼다 하는 것처럼 깨친 사람은 이를 변화로 알고 깨치지 못한 사람은 이를 생사(生 死)라고 합니다.

소태산 대종사가 제자 김기천에게 처음으로 법명을 내릴 때였습니다. 소태산은 그에게 “그대가 서당의 훈장을 해서 한

문 실력이 상당하겠지만 천지자연의 이치를 깨치지 못하고 생사 해탈을 못한다면 무슨 소용이 있겠는가?”, “법명을 몇 기(幾)에 일천 천(千)으로 하면 어떻겠나? 우주의 영원한 세월에 비하면 사람의 한평생은 눈 깜짝할 사이일 뿐이네. 진리 를 깨치는 공부를 잘해 보세.” 김기천은 생시(生時, 사는 동안)에 대종사로부터 견성 인가를 받게 됩니다.

입니다. 변화하는 그 사이에 있는 ‘나’에 집착하지 말라는 것입니다. 집착하면 그것이 고(苦)이고 그게 괴로움의 원인입 니다. 그 고를 바로 보고 벗어나는 것을 해탈, 초월이라고 합니다. 중생은 업대로 살지만(業生), 도인은 원생(願生) 즉 원 대로 산답니다.

생사의 큰일을 해결한다 했는데, 생로병사는 춘하추동과 같다고 했습니다. 변한다는 것이지요. 심지어 죽음도 그것으로

써 끝이 아니라, 잠이 들었다 깼다 하는 것처럼 깨친 사람은 이를 변화로 알고 깨치지 못한 사람은 이를 생사라 한다고

법문하였습니다. 변했던 그것, 변하고 있는 그것, 변할 그것인데 그 자체가 끝이라고 알면 조급하고 여유가 없어집니다. 집착하니 마음이 무겁습니다.

어떤 교무님이 병원에 병문안을 갔습니다. 두 분을 만났는데, 한 분은 정부 고위직 공무원을 역임한 분으로 평소에 교분 이 있었고 다른 한 분은 노인 교도님이었습니다. 고위직에 있던 분이 교무님 손을 잡고 “나를 좀 살려 주세요. 기도 좀 해

주세요.” 하고 애원을 하더랍니다. 교무님이 간절히 기도를 올리고 이번에는 다른 병실에 계신 할머니 교도님에게 갔는 데, 기도를 마치자 하시는 말씀이 “내가 기차표를 사 놓았는데 개찰이 안 되어서 아직 못 떠나고 있습니다.” 그러더랍니 다. 예전에는 역무원이 표를 확인해 줘야 플랫폼으로 나갈 수 있었습니다. 그래서 하는 말입니다.

3. 인과의 이치를 드러내고 살아가는 세월 동안 내 앞에 오는 모든 업은 어떤 이치에 의해서 이뤄지는가? 그것은 내가 지은 대로 받는다는 인

과의 이치입니다. 참회문에 “선행자는 후일에 상생의 과보를 받고, 악행자는 후일에 상극의 과보를 받는 것이 호리 도 틀림이 없다.” 하셨지요. 이것을 알고 행하면 인과의 이치를 수행하는 길을 아는 사람입니다.

교당에 오던 발길이 뜸하던 교도님이 모처럼 오셨어요. 그분이 “교당에 가서 인과 법문을 듣고 무서운 생각이 든

다.”고 했습니다. 그래서 “무서워할 것 없어요. 내가 지었지만, 받는 사람은 나입니다. 내게 오는 업을 어떻게 받아

들이냐에 따라 달라집니다. 그러니, 허송세월 하지말고 부지런히 수양력, 지혜력을 길러 놓으시면 됩니다.” 그랬습 니다.

매 순간 나를 이루어 가는 것이 업이 됩니다. 살면서 내가 보고 듣고, 관계 맺는 모든 게 내 업을 쌓는 것입니다. 듣지 말아야 할 것은 안 듣고, 보지 말아야 할 것은 안 보고, 말하지 말아야 할 것은 말 안 해야 악업을 덜 쌓는다고 합니다.

4. 수행의 길을 갖추었다고 하였지요. 여기서 수행은 정신 수양에 한정된 의미가 아니고, 신앙과 수행의 길을 아울러 담고 있습니다. 이 가르침을 따라 참된 성 품을 깨닫고, 생사 대사를 해결하며, 인과에 어둡지 않아서 복과 선업을 지어 가는 것입니다.

일원상 서원문에 우리 어리석은 중생은 이 법신불 일원상을 체 받아서 심신을 원만하게 수호하고 사리를 원만하게 알고 심신을 원만하게 사용하는 공부를 지성으로 하여 진급이 되고 은혜를 입으리라고 서원하지요. 우리가 불법을 알아서 행 41

해야 할 수행길은 원불교 교전에 세세 곡절 밝혀 놓으셨습니다. 어찌 다행 세상에서 가장 큰길을 가고 있으니, 마음공부 잘하여 큰마음으로 늘 지혜롭고 행복하게 살아가시기를 기도합 니다.

보산 나상호 교무는 1990년에 출가하였습니다. 원불교 중앙총부 교정원 교화훈련부와 기획실, 분당교당, 강남교당에서 근무하였고 현재 원불교 교정원장으로 봉직하고 있습니다.

Understanding Someone’s Mind

외로움을 퇴치하기 위해 노력하고 있다고 한다. 2018 년 1월에는 세계 최초로 ‘Minister for Loneliness’라

는 장관직을 신설했다는 보도도 보았다. 물론 이것이 비단 영국만의 문제는 아닐 것이다. 현대사회를 살아가 는 많은 사람들이 외로움이라는 문제에 노출되어 있고, 물리적으로는 분명히 사람들 속에서 살고 있으면서도 정서적으로는 단절되어 있다는 기분을 느끼는 경우가 많다. 더욱이 코로나 19의 영향으로 일상에서 느끼는

인간관계의 벽과 단절감이 심화 되기도 하였다. 그만큼

사람과 사람 사이에서 신뢰와 존중, 친밀감이 자라나게 하는 공감의 힘이 매우 절실하다.

우리가 상대에 대해 공감한다고 해서 대화에서 반드시

“~하군요”, “~을 원했나 봐요”, “~라는 거죠?”와 같이 표현할 필요는 없다. 예전에 만났던 어떤 친구는 어느

힘들었던 하루를 마무리하는 시간에 있었던 한 모임에 서, “오늘은 힘든 하루를 보낸 그 친구가 원하는 메뉴로 50

My Study of the Mind

by Lee, Kyungjoon What is it that I use incessantly throughout my life?

Undoubtedly, it’s both my body and mind. I select healthy foods for my body and occasionally exercise. I have regular health check-ups, and I practice meditation because I know stress is bad for my body. The body and mind are like the two sides of a coin, yet I used to believe that, unlike

the body, the mind adjusted itself automatically. However, since I started studying the mind, I have gradually changed my lifestyle.

One morning, something minor happened. When I went to fill a glass from the water purifier, I found only a little water left. Annoyance bubbled up as I waited for the water to refill. I thought, “Shouldn’t the last person to use this have refilled it? Why should I be the one always to fill up

the water?” This recurring task had never bothered me before, but on this day, it did. Realizing

this, I reflected on the discomfort stemming from my expectation of convenience and my memories of repeatedly filling the tank. Typically, such small actions pass without thought, but

now discomfort brought feelings of resentment. Recognizing that these feelings stemmed not from the situation but from my desires was enlightening. Understanding the state of my mind,

I was able to request the last person to use the water to refill without irritation. That morning, I practiced mind study.

Life is a continuous series of situations. Through these situations, I study and observe, striving to bring harmony to myself and my surroundings. Previously, I would think, “You made me angry.”

However, the mind study shifted the source of my emotions from others to myself. I was able to gain control over my emotions. Observing my reactions to the situations helped me identify my habits and biases of likes and dislikes. I realized these distinctions originated from my discriminative mind.

Understanding my own mind enabled me to empathize with others. When someone else is angry, I can now see their struggle and understand their feelings more sincerely. Over time, through

years of mind study, I’ve come to appreciate the marvelous realization that nothing in this world happens on its own.

The deeper my gratitude grows, the more naturally it turns into love. Just as the body and mind are partners, so are gratitude and love. I’ve learned firsthand that nothing in this world is static,

and every event has its cause, which I’ve learned to accept. With this belief, when faced with

difficulties or negative emotions, I reset to the state of mind I had before they arose. Although it doesn’t always work out as planned, this process of reflection often leads to different outcomes.

Most importantly, what is invisible to the eye becomes visible to the mind, bringing a sense of ease and spaciousness. This is the joy I find in studying the mind. Just as a child grows under

the care of a parent’s love, I am thankful today for the wise sages who nurture my mind and the teachers who guide my mind study.

나의 마음공부 글. 이경준 내가 평생을 쉬지 않고 사용하는 것은 무엇일까? 단연 몸과 마음이다. 몸을 위해서는 건강한 식품을 고르고 틈틈이 운동도 한다. 정기적으로 체크도 하고 스트레스

가 몸에 좋지 않다고 명상도 한다. 동전의 양면처럼 함께하는 몸과 마음인데, 나는 몸에 비하면 마음은 저절로 조절 되는 줄 알고 살았다. 그러다 마음공부를 하면서 조금씩 변화된 생활을 하게 되었다.

어느 아침에 일어난 일이다. 정수기에 물을 먹으려 하니 조금밖에 없었다. 물을 넣고 기다리는 동안 짜증이 났다. 맨 나중에 사용한 사람이 물을 채워놓아야 하지 않았을까? 왜 나만 물을 채워야 하냐는 생각에서다. 늘 하던 일인 데, 오늘은 왜 짜증이 날까? 이렇게 일어난 나의 마음을 보니 그것은 불편함이었다. 그 불편함이 없기를 바라는 마 음과 그동안 물을 채웠던 기억 때문이었다. 그 조그만 행동도 할 때는 아무런 생각이 없다가 막상 내가 불편하니

서운함으로 밀려온다. 이러한 감정의 원인이 대상에 있지 않고, 나의 바람에서 비롯되었음을 알아차린다. 나의 마 음 상태를 알고 나니 짜증 없이 마지막 사용한 사람에게 물을 채워달라고 부탁할 수 있었다. 그날 아침은 그렇게 마음공부를 하였다.

산다는 것은 끝없는 일의 연속이다. 나는 이렇게 일 속에서 공부하고 확인하며 나와 주위를 조화로운 방향으로 만

들어 본다. 그동안 나는 “네가 나를 화나게 만들었어.”라고 생각했다. 그러나 마음공부를 하면서 감정의 원인이 대

상에서 나로 옮겨왔다. 그러면서 나의 감정의 키를 내가 갖게 되었다. 또한, 일에 대한 반응을 스스로 보면서 나의 54

습관을 살펴보게 되었고, 좋아하는 것과 싫어하는 것으로 나누는 나의 편견이 보였다. 그리고 그것은 나의 분별심 에서 비롯한다는 것도 알게 되었다.

나는 나의 마음을 보게 되니, 상대방의 마음도 살필 수 있었다. 상대가 화를 낼 때는 힘들어하는 마음도 함께 볼 수 있어 상대의 표현이나 말 속에서 그 내면을 좀 더 이해할 수 있었다. 한 번 두 번, 한 해 두 해, 마음공부 하는 시간 이 길어지면서 세상 모든 것이 어느 것 하나 저절로 이루어진 것이 없다는 것에 경이로움과 감사함을 느꼈다.

감사함이 깊어질수록, 채워질수록 사랑으로 나아가는 것도 알았다. 몸과 마음이 짝을 이루듯, 감사와 사랑도 하나 인 듯하다. 세상 일이 원래 고정됨이 없다는 것을 스스로 행동으로 알게 되었고, 일어나는 일 또한 그 원인이 있음

을 알아 그것을 인정하게 되었다. 이러한 믿음을 바탕으로 나는 힘든 일이나 감정이 일어날 때 그것들이 일어나기

전의 마음으로 회복(Reset)한다. 물론 생각에서 그칠 뿐 잘되지 않을 때도 있지만 그러한 한 생각, 한 행동만으로 도 다른 결과로 이어지는 것을 스스로 확인할 수 있었다.

무엇보다도 눈으로 보이지 않는 것이 마음으로 보이고 여유가 생긴다. 이것이 내가 마음공부를 하면서 느끼는 재

미이다. 아이가 부모의 사랑으로 자라듯 오늘도 마음을 키워주는 성현님들과 마음공부를 지도를 해 주시는 스승님 께 감사드린다.

Being alone and Being together : Ilwonsang Vow in our daily life

by Hojin Park Ilwonsang vow is the essence of Master Sotatesan’s teachings and a powerful life force for all practitioners. That is why we, as Won Buddhist practitioners, chant the “Ilwonsang vow” at every

prayer, every dharma service and every moment in our life. I grew up in Won Buddhist family, so “Ilwonsang vow” has been part of my life from the beginning.

If we memorize this Ilwonsang Vow and keep it in our heart, there are many opportunities in our daily life to understand each and every word deeply, and the true reality related to those teachings.

This consistent and sincere practice is important in our daily life, especially those two moments; When we are alone and when we are together with others.

Let’s think about the first one, how do you spend your time when you are alone?

Sometimes physically we are alone, but are busy creating external or internal distractions to avoid uncomfortable feelings, emotions or fear of boredom.

However, these external distractions cannot give us a solution for our suffering. If we are truly

being with ourselves without any distractions, we can find our true nature and dwell in a non dualistic reality and oneness with all other beings.

That is why aloneness is the essence of all types of meditative practice. Buddha said, “In heaven above and on earth below, I alone am honored.” What does this mean?

This is the state of mind of oneness, so there is no separation between me and others.

Ilwon is the realm of samadhi beyond words and speech. It is the mother nature of all our consciousness. When we express our thoughts or feelings, we try our best to describe what it is

with words or speech, but language can not express true reality, so that each and every one of us needs to figure out true reality through our own experience.

All languages are great tools for pointing out the true reality. It is like pointing at the moon in

the sky. To apply this practice in our daily life, I let go of my previous perceptions of words,

especially when I meet new people and new situations. We face true reality with a humble mind and beginner's mind because it is always relational and impermanently changes in each moment.

Let’s start our day with the state of mind that is the realm of samadhi beyond words and speech.

This is the dharmakaya Buddha within us.

When we are able to be alone well, we do not feel loneliness or isolation, rather we feel limitless interconnectedness with all other beings. We appreciate the existence of all other forms of beings

on earth. Master Sotaesan teaches us that the manifestation of the truth of Ilwon is Fourfold Grace, Grace of heaven and earth, Grace of parents, Grace of fellow beings and the Grace of

Laws. We can not live without all other living beings. We are mutually benefiting each other's life.

Master Sotaesan said “Take Ilwonsang as the object of faith and, believing in its truth, pursue merit and happiness. If we were to specify the content of Ilwonsang, it is in fact the Fourfold

Grace; if we were to specify the content of the Fourfold Grace, it is in fact all things in the universe; and there is nothing among the myriad things in heaven and earth or the dharma realm of empty space that is not the Buddhas. Thus, regardless of time and place, we must never

neglect to maintain a respectful state of mind and should treat the myriad things with the same

pure mind and pious attitude we have for the venerable Buddha ...” (Verse 4, Doctrine, The Scripture of the Founding Master)

This is a great teaching to guide us to understand the relationship between the truth of Ilwon and Fourfold Grace.

Through deep understanding of ourselves, we can see others’ differences with an open heart without discrimination. It is more like learning about our differences with humility and a humble

mind. We are learning how to live together well with others in a harmonious way through following the path of Fourfold Grace.

Ideally, oneness is great, but togetherness is another matter.

It is like being aware that the truth of Ilwon, our higher self or our true self is wonderful, but

how we live with all other living beings in our daily life is an important matter to really actualize oneness on earth with all different people.

There are many unresolved problems and suffering

in the world, but the first step to alleviate suffering

starts from our internal peace and tranquility through deeper understanding of ourselves and others.

This is the moment we need to take an action to transform ourselves as a Buddha. If we postpone it to our next life, or 10 years later, or even tomorrow, the future will not be much different than today.

In each and every moment all we can do is our best

to choose wholesome action and let go of deluded thoughts or unhealthy habits.

Therefore, we unawakened beings vow to practice wholeheartedly, modeling ourselves after Ilwonsang, 60

the dharmakaya buddha, by cultivating our minds and bodies deeply, knowing human affairs and universal principles thoroughly, and using our minds and bodies skillfully, Thus progressing rather than regressing and receiving grace rather than harm, until we attain the great empowerment of Ilwon and become one with the nature of Ilwon.

We take this Ilwonsang vow in each moment of our life, when we are alone or are together with others, until we achieve Buddhahood and deliver all sentient beings on earth.

홀로 또는 함께하는 공부 : 일상 속에서의 일원상 서원

글. 박호진 ‘일원상 서원문’은 소태산 대종사의 가르침의 핵심입니다. 그래서 우리는 원불교 수행자로서 우리 삶의 모든 기도,

모든 법제, 또는 모든 순간에 ‘일원상 서원문’을 암송합니다. 저는 원불교 집안에서 자랐기 때문에 ‘일원상 서원문’ 은 제 삶의 일부였습니다.

우리가 이 서원문을 외우고 마음에 새기면, 일상생활 속에서 단어 하나하나를 깊이 이해할 수 있는 기회가 많아지 고, 그 가르침과 관련된 참된 현실을 이해할 수 있는 기회가 많이 있게 됩니다.

일상적인 삶 속에서 공부심을 놓치지 않고 생활하려면 어떻게 해야할까요? 저는 우리의 삶 속에서 중요한 두 순간 이 있다고 봅니다. 하나는 혼자 있을 때이고 다른 하나는 다른 사람들과 함께 있을 때입니다.

우리가 혼자 있을 때를 생각해보면, 때로는 육체적으로는 혼자이지만 불편한 감정, 또는 지루함에 대한 두려움을 피하기 위해 외부적 또는 내부적으로 주의를 산만하게 만들기에 바쁩니다. 그러나 이렇게 정신을 산만하게 하는

것은 우리의 고통에 대한 해결책이 될 수 없습니다. 오직 우리가 정신의 안정을 얻고 진정으로 우리 자신과 함께 있다면, 우리는 진정한 본성을 찾고 다른 모든 존재와 하나됨을 느낄수 있습니다.

홀로 있음은 모든 명상 수행의 본질입니다. 부처님께서는 “천상천하유아독존(天上天下唯我獨尊)” 즉, 우주 가운

데 나보다 더 존귀한 이는 없다고 말씀하셨습니다. 이것은 바로 우리가 하나의 마음 상태로 들어갔을때, 나와 다른 사람 사이에 분리가 없으며, 모두가 존귀한 존재라는 뜻입니다.

일원은 말과 글을 초월한 삼매의 영역입니다. 그것은 우리의 모든 의식의 본성입니다. 모든 언어는 진실을 가리키

기 위한 도구와 같아서, 허공의 달을 가르키는 손가락은 될 수 있지만, 달 그 자체는 될 수 없습니다. 그래서 우리는 언어와 문자를 초월한 진리의 실체를 체험하는 공부를 해야 합니다. 이 습관을 일상 생활에 적용하기 위해 저는 특

히 새로운 사람과 만나거나, 새로운 상황을 대할 때, 머리 속에 저장된 선입견을 내려놓는 공부를 합니다. 모든 현 실은 시시각각 변하기 때문에 겸손한 마음과 초심자의 마음으로 진정한 현실을 마주합니다. 언어와 문자를 초월한 마음의 상태로 하루를 시작합시다. 이것이 바로 우리 안에 있는 법신불입니다.

참으로 홀로 존재할 때, 우리는 외로움이나 고립감을 느끼지 않고 오히려 다른 모든 존재와 무한한 상호 연결을 느

끼게 됩니다. 우리는 지구상에 존재하는 다른 모든 형태의 존재에 감사합니다. 소태산 대종사는 일원의 진리의 현 현은 사은(四恩) 즉 천지은(天地恩) · 부모은(父母恩) · 동포은(同胞恩) · 법률은(法律恩)이라고 밝혀 주셨습니다.

일원상의 진리의 내용을 구체적으로 말하면 곧, 네 가지 큰 은혜인 사은(四恩)이며, 사은의 내용을 구체적으로 설

명하면 우주 안의 모든 것으로서 하늘과 땅의 만물과 허공법계가 다 부처 아님이 없으니, 우리는 시간과 장소를 가 리지 않고 항상 공경하는 마음으로 부처님 대하는 청정하고 경건한 마음으로 만물을 대하라고 말씀하셨습니다. 이 것은 일원의 진리와 사은의 관계를 이해할 수 있도록 해주신 큰 가르침입니다.

우리가 진정으로 홀로 있음으로서 자기 자신에 대한 이해를 깊이 해 나갈 때 우리의 본래 마음과 하나가 되어, 차 별 없이 열린 마음으로 다른 사람을 볼 수 있습니다. 그것은 겸허한 마음으로 서로의 다름을 배워 나가는 수행의

길이 될 것입니다. 그래서 우리가 없어서는 살 수 없는 은혜의 관계로 우주 만물이 서로 연결되어 있음을 알고, 모 두가 진리의 화현임을 믿고 언제 어디서나 경건한 마음으로 수행해 갈 때, 우리는 다른 사람들과 조화롭게 잘 사는 법을 배우고 실행하게 될 것입니다.

우리의 본래 마음을 깨달아서 모두가 하나인 자리를 깨치는 것도 중요하지만, 진리의 화현인 모든 생명들과 조화 롭게 함께 사는 것은 또 다른 문제입니다. 그러므로, 일상 생활 속에서 다른 이들과 함께 잘 살아나가는 방법을 터 득하여 실행하는 것은 지구상에 살아가는 모두가 평화롭게 공존하는 법을 배우는 길이 될 것이며, 이것이 바로 이 시대에 필요한 하나됨의 실천입니다.

세상에는 해결되지 않은 문제와 고통이 많지만, 고통에서 벗어나는 첫 번째 단계는 자신과 타인에 대한 깊은 이해 와 내면의 평화에서 시작됩니다.

지금이야말로 우리가 중생에서 부처로 변화를 위한 행동을 취해야 할 때입니다. 내세나 10년 후나 내일로 미루면 미래는 오늘과 크게 다르지 않을 것입니다.

매 순간 우리는 건전한 행동을 선택하고 잘못된 생각이나 건강에 해로운 습관을 버리기 위해 최선을 다합니다. 하 나됨의 실천을 위해서 경건한 마음을 놓지 않고 모든 사물과 생명체에게 감사와 은혜의 마음을 전합니다. 이것이

쉽지 않은 일이라 할지라도, 일원상 서원문을 통해 우리가 가야하는 실천의 길입니다. 소태산 대종사께서는 일원 상 서원문의 결론을 다음과 같이 밝히셨습니다.

“그러므로 우리 어리석은 중생은 이 법신불 일원상을 체 받아서, 심신을 원만하게 수호하는 공부를 하며, 또는 사 63

리를 원만하게 아는 공부를 하며, 또는 심신을 원만하게 사용하는 공부를 지성으로 하여, 진급이 되고 은혜는 입을

지언정, 강급이 되고 해독은 입지 아니하기로써 일원의 위력을 얻도록까지 서원하고 일원의 체성에 합하도록까지 서원함.”

의식의 깨침을 얻어 모든 생명들과 하나의 가족으로 공존과 번영을 누리고 살아가는 것이 내가 현재 지금 여기서

부터 마음의 평화와 세상의 낙원을 이루어가는 첫 걸음이 될 것임을 잊지말고, 홀로있을 때나 다른 이들과 함께 있 을 때나 한결 같이 매 순간 이 일원상의 서원을 지켜 나가기를 염원합니다. 일원상 서원문

The Foundation for Interfaith Dialogue : Perspective on Buddhist and Won Buddhist Doctrine

by Hyun, Sang-ho 1. Perspective on Buddhist Doctrine Each and every people have their own faith whether religious or not. There are many different

kinds of faith as diverse as society is. In this circumstance, how to live together with interfaith harmony in the world? We could observe many conflicts between one group and another due to different beliefs. The reason for the conflict between them is that they say only “Only my faith

is true and others’ are faulty.” In doing so, they could not accept others’ faiths and they tend to

fight with each other. As a result of different faiths, they will break the harmony of societies.

So how can we bring peace in the conflicts between different religious groups? The situation

is not much different from the time of Gautama Buddha in India, 2500 years ago. The conflicts involving the various religious faiths at that time were similar to those of this era. Although the faith groups were different in form, they were all searching for truth. Yet, they claimed that only their teachings were right and others were wrong. As a result, many adherents of their own sects denied the teachings of other sects.

I’d like to address this situation by referring you to the early Buddhist sutta, “Cankī Sutta

(Majjhima Nikāaya 95).” In this sutta, a 16-year-old Brahmin student named Kāpathika asked

the Buddha what is true. The Buddha answered his question gradually and spontaneously, leading him to where faith comes from and what truth is. Buddha was guiding Kāpaṭhika from preservation of truth (the idea that ‘Only this is true, anything else is wrong.’) to the discovery of truth (the idea beyond ‘Only this is true, anything else is wrong.’) From this sutta, we can see that the Buddha’s teaching was step-by-step; he never once jumped over the steps.

If someone is standing on preservation of the truth, there can be five things (faith, approval, oral

tradition, reasoned cogitation, and reflective acceptance of a view.) fully accepted by faith (and other four), yet it may be empty, hollow, and false; but there may be something else that is not

fully accepted by faith (and other four), yet it may be factual, true, and unmistaken. Under these conditions, we could not say ‘Only this is true, anything else is wrong.’

If someone wants to discover the truth, he or she has to eliminate his or her own greed, hate and delusion. This way of purifying three toxic minds also starts from greed. For discovering truth,

he or she has to recognize what greed is inside mind, which may be the thought of ‘Only this is true, anything else is wrong.’ Even though we remove this from each and every five conditions

in the first step, there may still be something deep in our minds that is a sense of what’s mine.

Therefore, we should eliminate the greed of claiming ‘this is mine.’

After purifying of three toxic minds by removing ‘I,’ we should go further to Faith, Visit, Paying Respect, Giving Ear, Hearing Dharma, Memorizing, Examination, A Reflective Acceptance of the

Teaching, Zeal, Application, Scrutiny, Striving, Realizing, Penetrating and Discovery of Truth.

After discovering of truth, Buddha led to the next level, the final arrival of the truth, through constant repetition, development, and cultivation. The beneficial way to arrive at the truth is to converse the preservation of the truth to the discovery of the truth.

“In that way, Master Gotama, there is the final arrival at truth; in that way one finally arrives

at truth; in that way we recognize the final arrival at truth. But, Master Gotama, what is most

helpful for the final arrival at truth? We ask Master Gotama about what is most helpful for the final arrival at truth.”

“1. Striving is most helpful for the final arrival at truth, Bhāradvāja. If one does not strive, one

will not finally arrive at truth; but because one strives, one does finally arrive at truth. That is why striving is most helpful for the final arrival at truth.”

“Examination,” 7. “Memorizing,” 8. “Hearing Dhamma,” 9. “Giving Ear,” 10. “Paying Respect,” 11.

Kāpaṭhika asked the Buddha that what truth is. He wanted to know how to access the truth.

Instead of telling him what truth is Buddha explained to him that “Only this is true and anything

else is wrong.” is not truth. In this sentence, we could recognize how we should treat other faith

groups. Before telling us what truth is, he always thought about what is not truth. Ironically, that was the reason why Buddha’s Dhamma is truth.

2. Perspective on Won-Buddhist Doctrine According to an outline of the teaching of Won Buddhism, the fundamental principles of all religions are essentially one. It means that the truth of all religions was one but differences have arisen due to the establishment of different systems and expedients over the ages. In place of the

Buddha’s teaching that is the counterproposition of ‘Only this is true, anything else is wrong.’, Won Buddhism starts from the perspective that the fundamental principles of all religions

are essentially one. Won Buddhism claims to be no different from the starting point of other religions. This may seem different from the Buddha’s teachings, but it means the same thing, just differently expressed.

Just as a Buddha is a person who has attained enlightenment, all truth is one, just different in

name and manifestation. However, ordinary people do not know what the truth is and they follow names and forms. Therefore, the Buddha said to put down the stereotype of ‘Only this is true, anything else is wrong.’ In my opinion, the Buddha would have wanted to say that all religions are fundamentally the same and there is no difference at all.

The result of arriving at the truth is not only to know the truth, but to know that all the dharma under heaven revolve around one purpose: peace in the world.

Whether it is the truth or not, religious beliefs are very important because they transcend

the actual lives of the believers. Almost all religions have tried to answer questions about transcending the realities of life, such as death, spirituality, the afterlife, and heaven, which

is why it is so important to gain religious faith in the first place. What is the right way to gain religious faith?

I would like to bring the article of The Second Head Dharma Master of Won Buddhism, 68

Chŏngsan. Chŏngsan (1900-1962) had succeeded Sotaesan and changed the name of organization from “The Society for the Study of Buddha Dharma” to “Won Buddhism.”

Chŏngsan suggested that there are ‘Four Ways of Religious Faith,’2) the first is to choose and believe in truthful religion. As Buddha mentioned about what truth is in the “Cankī sutta,”

religious truth is not to say ‘only my truth is right and other truths is wrong.’ The conflict between religions comes from ignorance of what religious truth is. The second way of faith is to have in both other-power and self-power. The Asian religions of Buddhism, Confucianism, and

Taoism are centered on self- power rather than other-power. But if the object of faith is truthful, we should respect and pay reverence to the other-power in the Western religious cultures. The

third is to have faith in and respect for in the source of one’s religions faith, great teacher and lineage of dharma. Furthermore, we should realize that doctrines of all religions are originated

in the unitary fundamental truth. By doing so, one must have faith in and reverence for all buddhas and sages. The fourth one is to maintain one’s faith throughout eternity, no matter what difficulties arise.

3. Conclusion In his conversations with other faith groups, Buddha always had shown warm-hearted attitude

and given detailed answers to them. As a matter of fact, whether it was true or not, the young

brahmin’s ego had already melted into the Buddha’s warm heart. The Buddha’s teachings are the

highlight of interfaith harmony in the world. So how can we convey this warmth to other faith groups here and now? What kind of education is good for interfaith harmony in the world?

In comparing the Buddha’s teachings and Won Buddhism, I realized that Won Buddhism is to complete the Buddha’s teachings and to reveal the true meaning of the Buddha.

The answer to the first question is to realize that the fundamental principle of all religions in the

world is essentially one. Nowadays, there are many religious conflicts because of ‘Only this is true, anything else is wrong.’ However, if we realize that all religions are originated in the unitary fundamental truth, there is no need to fight.

To answer the second question, we need to know the right way of faith. There are four right ways

of religious faith; they are to choose and believe in the truthful religion, to have faith in both other-power and self-power, to keep one’s faith and pay reverence to the source of one’s religious

faith (namely, to sincerely respect and revere the great teachers who elucidated the religious tenets, the doctrine, and the lineage of the dharma) and lastly, to adhere to this faith for eternity,

no matter what difficulties arise. One’s faith and devotion should be constant throughout the eternal life without regressing or terminating in any kind of adverse conditions.

There are a lot of conflicts between religions these days, with the belief that ‘Only this is true,

anything else is wrong.’ When you realize that all religions are rooted in unitary fundamental truth, however, there’s no need to fight. Accordingly, we could bring world peace by recognizing Master Chŏngsan’s ‘Unity of the source of all principles,’ which means that all religions in this world have a single principle within a single boundary.3)

종교가 있든 없든 모든 사람들은 각자의 믿음을 가지고 있습니다. 사회가 다양한 만큼 다양한 종류의 신앙이 있습

니다. 이런 상황에서 어떻게 다른 신앙인들과 함께 조화롭게 세상을 살아갈 수 있을까요? 우리는 서로 다른 믿음으 로 인하여 한 집단과 다른 집단 사이에 많은 갈등을 관찰할 수 있습니다. 그 갈등의 이유는 내 믿음만 옳고 남들은

모두 거짓이라고 하기 때문입니다. 그러면서 서로의 믿음을 받아들이지 못하고 싸우고 있습니다. 다른 믿음의 결 과로 그들은 사회의 조화를 깨뜨릴 것입니다. 그렇다면 타 종교집단의 갈등에서 어떻게 평화를 가지고 올 수 있을

까요? 그 상황은 지금으로부터 2500년 전 고타마 부처님 시대와 크게 다르지 않습니다. 그 시절에도 다양한 종교 에 대한 상황의 유사성이 이 시대와 비슷하였습니다. 당시에는 비록 형태는 다른 종교들이었지만, 그들도 참된 것

이 무엇인지를 찾는 것은 같았습니다. 그들은 자신의 가르침만이 옳고 다른 사람들은 잘못이라고 주장했습니다. 그 결과 자기 종파의 많은 신자들은 다른 종파의 가르침을 부인하고 있었습니다.

저는 이 상황에 대하여 초기불교 경전인 맛지마 니까야의 95번째 경인 짱끼 경을 소개하고자 합니다. 이 경에서 카 파티카(Kāpaṭhika )라고 하는 16세의 바라문교 학생이 붓다에게 참된 것이 무엇인지 물었습니다. 붓다는 그의 질

문에 점진적이고 자발적으로 대답했고, 그에게 믿음이 어디서 오는지, 진리가 무엇인지에 대해 인도했습니다. 붓

다는 카파티카를 진리의 보존[‘오직 이것만이 참이고, 다른 것은 거짓이다’라는 관념]에서 진리의 발견[‘이것만이 참이고, 다른 것은 거짓이다.’가 아닌 관념]으로 인도하고 있었습니다. 이 경을 통해 우리는 붓다의 가르침이 단계 적임을 알 수 있습니다. 그는 단 한 번도 단계를 뛰어넘지 않았습니다.

만일 누군가가 진리의 보존 위에 서 있다면, 믿음으로 완전히 받아들여진 다섯 가지가 있을 수 있습니다.[신앙, 승

인, 구전, 합리적 생각, 견해의 반성적 수용] 그러나 그것들은 공허하고 텅 비었으며 거짓일 수 있습니다. 하지만 믿

음[승인, 구전, 합리적 생각, 견해의 반성적 수용]으로 완전히 받아들여지지 않는 다른 것이 있을 수 있습니다. 그러 나 그것은 사실에 입각한 진실이고 틀림이 없을 수 있습니다. 이런 상황에서 우리는 ‘이것만 사실이고 다른 것은 잘 못됐다’라고 말할 수 없습니다.

만일 누군가가 진리를 발견하기를 원한다면, 그는 자신의 탐심, 진심 그리고 치심을 제거해야만 합니다. 이 세 가지

독한 마음을 정화하는 방법도 탐욕에서 시작합니다. 진리를 발견하기 위해서는 마음 속에 있는 탐욕이 무엇인지를

인식해야 합니다. 그것은 ‘이것만 맞고, 다른 건 다 틀렸다’는 생각일 수도 있습니다. 우리가 5가지 조건[신앙, 승인, 구전, 합리적 생각, 견해의 반성적 수용]마다 탐욕을 제거한다고 하더라도 우리의 깊은 마음 속에는 내 것이라는 것이 남아있을 수 있습니다. 그러므로 나의 것인 욕심을 없애야 합니다.

‘나’를 제거하여 세 가지 독한 마음을 정화한 후, 우리는 믿음, 방문, 존중하기, 귀 기울이기, 법문듣기, 기억, 시험, 가르침의 반성적 수용, 열정, 적용, 정밀조사, 노력, 실현, 통찰 그리고 진리의 발견으로 가야 합니다.

부처님은 진리를 발견한 후 진리를 체득하기 위해 끊임없는 반복과 발전, 그리고 수양을 통해 진리의 최종 도래라

는 한 차원 높은 단계로 이끌었습니다. 진리에 도달하는 유익한 방법은[진리의 보존 위에 서 있는 것에서] 진리를 발견하는 방법으로 변환하는 것입니다.

“그런 식으로 고타마 스승님, 진리에 최종적으로 도달합니다. 그렇게 해서 마침내 진리에 도달합니다. 그런 식으로

우리는 진리에 대한 최종 도착을 인식합니다. 그러나 고타마 스승이시여, 무엇이 최종적으로 진리에 도달하기 위한

가장 유익한 방법입니까? 우리는 고타마 스승님께 최종적인 진리에 도달하기 위한 가장 유익한 방법을 묻습니다.”

“1. 노력은 진리에 최종적으로 도달하는 데 가장 도움이 됩니다, 바라드바자여.; 노력하지 않는 자는 마침내 진리

에 도달할 수 없습니다. 하지만 사람이 노력하기 때문에 마침내 진리에 도달합니다. 그렇기 때문에 노력은 진리에 최종적으로 도달하는 데 가장 도움이 됩니다.”

대신에 부처님은 그에게 ‘이것만이 사실이고 다른 것은 잘못이다’라는 것은 진리가 아니라고 설명하셨습니다. 이 문장에 서 우리는 다른 종교 집단을 대하는 태도를 어떻게 가져야 하는지를 인식할 수 있었습니다. 진리가 무엇인지 말하기 전 에 그는 항상 진리가 아닌 것에 대해 생각했습니다. 아이러니하게도 그것이 부처님의 법이 진리인 이유였습니다.

2. 원불교적 관점 원불교의 ‘교법의 총설’에 따르면, 모든 종교의 기본 원칙은 본질적으 로 하나입니다. 모든 종교의 진리는 하나였으나 서로 다른 제도와 방

편을 세운지 오래되어 차이가 생겼다는 말입니다. ‘오직 이것 만이 옳

고 다른 것은 거짓이다’의 반대명제인 부처님의 가르침을 대신하여 원

불교는 모든 종교의 기본 원칙은 본질적으로 하나라는 것에서부터 시 작합니다. 원불교는 타종교의 출발점과 차이가 없다고 주장합니다. 이 것은 부처님의 가르침과 다른 것 같지만 그것은 표현만 다를 뿐 같은

의미입니다. 부처님은 깨달음을 얻은 사람인 것처럼 모든 진리는 하나 이고 이름과 나타남이 다른 것입니다. 그러나 범부들은 진리가 무엇인

지 모르고 단지 이름과 형상만을 따릅니다. 그러므로 부처는 ‘이것만 정산 종사

옳고 다른 것은 거짓이다’는 고정 관념을 내려놓으라고 하셨습니다.

부처님도 모든 종교가 근본적으로 동일하고 전혀 차이가 없다고 말하고 싶었을 것으로 생각합니다. 진리에 도달한 결과는 진리를 알게 될 뿐만 아니라 천하의 모든 법이 세상의 평화라는 하나의 목적으로 돌아가게 된다는 것을 아 는 것이기 때문입니다.

그것이 진리이건 아니건 종교적 믿음은 신자들의 실제 삶을 초월하기 때문에 매우 중요합니다. 거의 모든 종교는 죽음, 영성, 내생, 천국과 같은 삶의 현실을 초월하는 것에 대한 질문에 답하려고 노력했습니다. 그러므로 처음부터 종교적 믿음을 얻는 것이 매우 중요합니다. 종교적 믿음을 얻는 올바른 방법은 무엇일까요?

여 단체명을 ‘불법연구회’에서 ‘원불교’로 개명한 분입니다. 정산은 ‘신앙의 네 가지 도’에 대해 말씀했습니다. 첫 번

째는 진리적 종교를 선택하고 믿는 것입니다. 부처님께서 ‘짱끼경’에서 진리가 무엇인지 말씀하셨듯이, 종교적 진 리는 ‘나의 진리만이 옳고 다른 진리는 그르다’고 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 종교 간의 갈등은 종교적 진리가 무엇인지

모르는 무지에서 옵니다. 신앙의 두 번째 길은 타력과 자력을 동시에 갖는 것입니다. 동아시아의 종교인 불교, 유

교, 도교는 타력보다는 자력에 중심을 두고 있지만, 서구 종교문화에서는 신앙의 대상이 진실하다면 타력을 존중 하고 공경해야 하는 것입니다. 세 번째는 자신의 종교적 신앙의 근원, 위대한 스승과 법통에 대한 믿음과 존경입니 다. 나아가 모든 종교의 교리는 하나의 근본 진리에서 비롯된다는 사실을 깨달아야 합니다. 그렇게 함으로써 모든 부처님과 성현에 대한 믿음과 공경을 가져야 합니다. 네 번째는 어떤 어려운 일이 있어도 영생동안 이 믿음을 견지 하는 것입니다.

3. 결론 다른 종교 단체들과의 대화에 대하여 부처님은 항상 따뜻한 마음으로 그에게 자세한 답변을 해 주었습니다. 사실, 74

원불교 제2대 종법사이신 정산 종사의 글을 모셔오고자 합니다. 정산(1900-1962) 종사는 소태산의 정신을 계승하

그것이 사실이든 아니든 젊은 바라문의 에고는 이미 부처님의 따뜻한 마음에 녹아 내렸습니다. 부처님의 가르침은 세계 종교간 조화의 하이라이트입니다. 그렇다면 우리는 지금 여기에서 다른 종교 단체에게 어떻게 이 따뜻한 마 음을 전할 수 있을까요? 그리고 세상의 종교간 화합에는 어떤 교육이 좋을까요?

부처님의 가르침과 원불교를 비교하면서 나는 원불교가 부처님의 가르침을 완성하고 부처님의 참 뜻을 드러내는 것임을 깨달았습니다.

첫 번째 질문의 대답은 세상의 모든 종교의 근본 원리는 본질적으로 하나라는 것을 깨닫는 것입니다. 지금 시대는

‘이것만 옳고 다른 것은 옳지 않다’는 이유로 종교적 갈등이 많습니다. 그러나 모든 종교가 하나의 근본 진리에서 비롯된 것임을 깨달으면 싸울 필요가 없습니다.

두 번째 질문의 대답은 신앙의 올바른 길을 알아야 합니다. 종교적 신앙에는 네 가지 올바른 방법이 있습니다. ‘진 리적 종교를 고르고 믿어라, 자력과 타력을 동시에 가져라, 자신의 종교적 신앙의 근원‧위대한 스승과 법통에 대 한 믿음과 존경심을 가져라, 어떤 어려운 일이 있어도 영생동안 이 믿음을 견지해라.’

요즘 ‘이것만 옳고 다른 것은 옳지 않다’는 이유로 종교 간에 갈등이 많이 일어납니다. 그러나 모든 종교가 하나의 근본 진리에 뿌리를 두고 있음을 깨달으면 싸울 필요가 없습니다. 그러므로 우리는 이 세상의 모든 종교가 하나의 경계 안에 하나의 원리를 가지고 있다는 정산 종사의 ‘동원도리’를 깨달아 앎으로써 세계 평화를 가져올 수 있다고 생각합니다.

The True Nature of All Things

From the Perspective of Quantum Mechanics and Enlightenment

by Jeon, Heung Jin “What lies beyond the universe?,” “How did all things come into existence?,” “What is the

fundamental root of our existence?” These are fundamental questions asked by both science and religion.

In modern physics, quantum mechanics delves into the smallest components of matter by breaking it down to explore the fundamentals of all things. All matter in the universe, when

divided and divided again, reaches the smallest unit that defines its properties. This smallest unit

is called a ‘molecule,’ and there are as many types of molecules as there are types of matter in the universe.

When this molecule is further divided, the properties of the matter are lost entirely, and the

small grains that remain are called ‘atoms.’ There are over 100 kinds of atoms in the world, and

all matter is made up of these atoms. I, and everyone else, are also composed of countless atoms.

These atoms have a nucleus in the center, composed of protons and neutrons, around which

electrons revolve. The number of these protons, neutrons, and electrons gives rise to the different types of atoms. For example, an oxygen atom consists of eight protons, neutrons, and electrons each.

The size of an atom is much smaller than the thickness of a hair, and the nucleus at its center, as well as the electrons revolving around it, are much smaller than the atom itself. To illustrate, if an

atom were the size of a baseball field, its nucleus would be the size of a 1 cm bead at the center of the field, with electrons revolving around outside the field. This means the space between

the nucleus and the electrons is empty, making all matter, including our bodies and everything around us, nearly empty.

Thus, all things in the universe consist of over 100 types of atoms, which in turn are made up of nuclei of protons and neutrons with electrons revolving around them, and the inside of the atom is nearly empty. Therefore, if we had glasses that could see inside these atoms, everything in

the universe would appear almost as empty space. In fact, all of us, including myself, are nearly

empty voids.

Surprisingly, matter composed of these atoms is no different from energy. Thus, matter can

transform into energy, or energy can be made into matter. For example, the massive energy from the Sun is due to nuclear fusion within it. As the hydrogen nuclei fuse into helium nuclei, they release tremendous energy proportional to the reduced mass. The enormous energy of a

uranium nuclear bomb is also due to nuclear fission. The nuclei of heavy uranium atoms split into lighter nuclei, releasing energy proportional to the reduced mass. Thus, matter has not only solid properties but also properties as energy. My body, too, is a massive bundle of energy.

Earlier, I mentioned that if we wore glasses to see inside atoms, the universe would appear

almost as empty void. An interesting fact is that even in a vacuum where atoms or elementary particles have been entirely removed, countless elementary particles repeatedly arise and

disappear. In a vacuum, countless particles and antiparticles form pairs, collide, and disappear,

repeating endlessly. Since matter and energy are not different, this1) can also be described as an energy flux that arises and dissipates. Even if all the air is removed from this space, making it seem empty, countless particles, antiparticles, or vacuum energy would arise and disappear endlessly. We just can’t see it.

Another surprising property of the subatomic world is that particles can also exhibit wave properties. When an electron, typically thought of as a particle, is fired through two narrow slits, a wave-like interference pattern appears on a screen. If an electron were only a particle, it would show just two patterns on the screen due to being fired through two slits. However, a wave-like

pattern with multiple stripes appears, demonstrating the electron’s wave properties. This wave-

like interference pattern also appears with protons, neutrons, atoms, and even much larger molecules, proving that matter possesses wave properties. From a microscopic perspective, even my body, standing in place, has wave characteristics.

Modern physics has given us a new perspective on the world, which we once saw as purely material. It has

revealed that the material world is almost as empty as

a void, that a vacuum is dynamic and active, and that matter has not only solid properties but also properties of energy and waves. Additionally, modern physics has revealed “quantum entanglement,” a phenomenon where two particles remain connected despite being far apart.

If we had glasses that could see these facts, how would 80

everything in the world appear? I imagine all things would look like interconnected wave energy.

Wave energy as revealed in modern physics is similar to the concept of pneuma (qi). The Head

Dharma Master Chǒngsan said that pneuma, as the life-force of all things, is the power that animates them. However, this pneuma is nondual as unified with the numinosity. Modern

physics has not yet revealed this fact, but pneuma contains numinous awareness and numinous awareness contains pneuma which means pneuma is numinous awareness and numinous awareness is pneuma. Here, numinosity, as the original essence of all things, is the nature that is eternal and free from cessation. Numinosity and pneuma are not two but what becomes the

original essence is ‘numinosity.’ This numinosity is the void and calm and numinous awareness which is perfect and complete, utterly impartial and selfless. That is, our original mind that knows numinously in the midst of voidness and calmness.2)

In the “Secrets on Cultivating the Mind,” it is stated that this mind of void and numinous awareness is the mind of brilliance of all buddhas of the three time-periods and is that enlightened nature which is the original source of all sentient beings. The void, calm, and numinous awareness is ‘the mind-seal of all the buddhas and sages, and the original nature of all sentient beings.’3)

This numinosity is unified with pneuma and is nondual. The place where numinosity and pneuma are unified can be considered the true nature of all things. The true nature of all things in the universe is one numinous energy. And considering the facts revealed by modern physics, we can see that this numinous energy is not separate from all things manifested as phenomena.

Modern physics states that elementary particles have both energy and wave properties. This suggests that wave energy can clump into particles, forming atoms, molecules, and all things.

The relationship between matter and pneuma is similar. Our bodies and all things are formed by

the clumping of one numinous energy, making all things nondual from this energy. The realm

where all things are unified by “one numinous energy” is before us, yet we can’t see it without the right glasses.

What kind of glasses can show this realm, and how can we obtain them?

Those glasses are the glasses of the mind. The numinous energy is nondual from numinosity,

or the void, calm, and numinous awareness. Therefore, by restoring our true nature, the void,

calm, and numinous awareness, we can put on the glasses of the mind. The way to restore this

nature is through Sǒn (Zen, 禪). In Verse 12, Practice of the Scripture of the Founding Master, the Founding Master Sotaesan said, “The many enlightened masters of the Sǒn school have opened myriads of stratagems and gateways to Sǒn. But if we were to combine them all into a single

phrase, it would be: Bring an end to deluded thoughts and cultivate the true nature, so that the void, calm, and numinous awareness will appear in front of you, which is Sǒn.” This describes our mind being in a state of ever-alertness amidst calmness and ever-calmness amidst alertness.

Thus, if we have the right faith in the true nature of all things, including ourselves, and practice

the Timeless Sǒn and Placeless Sǒn, we will end our deluded thoughts, restore our true nature,

and realize that all things are beings united by one numinous energy and are everywhere Buddha images. We’ll also practice Buddha offerings knowing the principle that these images spiritually respond to bestow blessings or harm. Additionally, since numinosity and pneuma are nondual in

unity, restoring this nature makes us one with the numinous energy, making us one body with Heaven and Earth.

In Verse 11, Buddhahood of the Scripture of the Founding Master, the Founding Master Sotaesan said, “No matter how great the household, there is none greater than the one who has assimilated

heaven’s livelihood. No matter how great the person, there is none greater than the one who has assimilated heaven’s energy.” To be one with the numinous energy of Heaven and Earth is to

become a household that has assimilated heaven’s livelihood, and a person who has assimilated heaven’s energy.

만물의 참모습

양자역학과 깨달음의 관점으로 보는

글. 전흥진 “우주 저 멀리에는 무엇이 있을까?”, “만물(萬物)은 어떻게 존재하게 되었을까?”, “우리 존재의 근본 뿌리는 무엇

일까?”. 이러한 질문들은 과학과 종교에서 던지는 근원적인 질문입니다. 현대물리학에서 양자역학은 만물의 근본

을 탐구하기 위해 물질을 쪼개고 쪼개어 아주 작은 물질의 구성 요소를 탐구하였습니다. 우주에서 존재하는 모든

물질을 작게 나누고 또 나누면 그 물질의 특성을 나타내는 최소 단위에 이릅니다. 이 최소 단위를 ‘분자’라고 부르 는데 이 분자의 종류는 우주 내에 있는 물질의 종류만큼 많습니다.

이 분자를 또 나누면 물질의 특성은 완전히 없어지는데, 분자를 나누어 얻어지는 작은 알맹이를 ‘원자’라고 합니다.

세상에 있는 원자의 종류는 100여 종이 되는데, 모든 물질은 이러한 원자로 이루어져 있습니다. 저뿐만 아니라 다 른 모든 분도 수많은 원자가 뭉쳐서 이루어진 존재입니다. 이러한 원자는 중심에 양성자와 중성자로 구성된 원자

핵이 있고, 이 원자핵 주위를 전자가 돌고 있습니다. 원자가 100여 종이 되는 것은 이러한 양성자, 중성자, 전자의

개수가 다르기 때문입니다. 예를 들어 산소 원자는 양성자, 중성자, 전자가 각각 8개로 구성되어 있습니다. 원자의 크기는 머리카락 굵기보다 훨씬 작고, 중심의 원자핵과 그 주위를 도는 전자는 원자보다 훨씬 작습니다.

이렇게 아주 작은 원자의 구조를 비유하여 설명하면, 원자를 야구장 크기로 볼 때, 원자핵은 야구장 중앙에 있는 1cm 정도의 구슬 크기라 할 수 있습니다. 그리고 이 원자핵보다 작은 전자는 야구장 바깥을 돌고 있다고 설명할

수 있습니다. 그러므로 원자핵과 전자 사이의 공간은 비어 있기 때문에 우리 몸과 우리 주위의 모든 물질은 거의 비어 있는 것입니다. 우주 만물은 모두 다 100여 종의 원자로 구성되어 있으며, 그 원자들은 다시 양성자와 중성자

로 구성된 원자핵과 그 주위를 도는 전자로 구성되었으며, 원자의 속은 거의 텅 비어 있습니다. 그러므로 우리가 이 러한 원자의 속을 볼 수 있는 안경을 쓰고 우주 만물을 바라본다면, 우주 만물은 모두 다 거의 비어 있는 허공으로 보일 것입니다. 실제로 저를 포함한 우리 모두는 거의 비어 있는 허공입니다.

그런데 이러한 원자로 구성된 물질은 놀랍게도 에너지와 다르지 않습니다. 그래서 물질이 에너지가 될 수도 있고, 또는 에너지를 물질로도 만들 수 있습니다. 예를 들어 태양에서 나오는 거대한 에너지는 태양 내부에서 일어나는

핵융합 때문입니다. 수소 원자핵이 헬륨 원자핵으로 융합하면서 줄어든 질량에 비례하여 엄청난 에너지가 나오는 것입니다. 또 우라늄 핵폭탄의 거대한 에너지는 핵분열 때문입니다. 무거운 우라늄 원자핵이 가벼운 원자핵들로 분열하면서 줄어든 질량에 비례하여 엄청난 에너지가 나오는 것입니다. 이처럼 물질은 단단한 물질적 특성만 아니 라 에너지로써 특성도 있습니다. 저의 몸도 엄청난 에너지 덩어리라 할 수 있겠습니다.

앞에서 원자 구조를 설명할 때 우리가 원자의 속을 볼 수 있는 안경을 쓰고 우주 만물을 바라본다면 우주 만물은 거의 비어 있는 허공으로 보일 것이라 하였습니다. 재미있는 사실은 원자나 소립자 등이 완전히 제거된 진공의 상

태에서도 무수한 소립자가 순간적으로 생겨났다가 사라지기를 반복한다는 것입니다. 진공 상태에서는 무수한 입

자와 반입자가 동시에 쌍으로 생겨났다가 둘은 곧 충돌하여 없어지기를 한없이 반복합니다. 물질과 에너지가 다르 지 않으므로 이는1) 에너지가 출몰(出沒)한다고 표현할 수도 있습니다. 지금 이 공간에 있는 공기를 다 제거하면 아

무 것도 없을 것 같지만, 그 진공 속에도 무수한 입자와 반입자 혹은 진공 에너지가 한없이 생겨났다 사라질 것입 니다. 다만 우리가 그것을 보지 못할 뿐입니다.

원자 이하의 소립자 세계에서 놀라운 특성 중 다른 하나는 입자가 파동의 특성도 지닌다는 것입니다. 입자라고 알 고 있던 전자를 두 개의 좁은 틈 곧, 이중 슬릿(Double Slit)으로 발사를 하면 스크린에 파동과 같은 간섭무늬가 나

타납니다. 만약 전자가 입자의 특성만 있다면 두 개의 틈으로 발사했으니 스크린에 두 개의 무늬만 나타나야 합니

다. 그런데 파동과 같이 여러 개의 줄무늬가 있는 간섭무늬가 나타납니다. 이는 전자가 파동의 특성을 가진다는 것 을 증명합니다. 그런데 전자뿐만 아니라 양성자, 중성자, 원자 심지어 그보다 훨씬 더 큰 분자에서도 이러한 간섭무

늬가 나타납니다. 이는 물질이 파동의 특성을 가진다는 것을 증명하는 것입니다. 제자리에 서 있는 저의 몸도 미세 한 관점으로 보면 파동의 특성이 있습니다.

현대물리학은 과거에 우리가 단순한 물질세계라고 생각했던 이 세계에 대해 새로운 시각을 갖게 했습니다. 현대물

리학은 물질세계가 거의 허공처럼 비어 있다는 사실을 밝혔고, 진공이 고요한 상태가 아니라 역동적이고 활동적인

상태라는 것을 밝혔으며, 물질이 단단한 입자로써 특성만 있는 것이 아니라 에너지의 특성과 파동의 특성도 있다 는 사실을 밝혔습니다. 그리고 앞에서 설명하진 않았지만 두 입자가 우주 멀리 떨어져 있어도 서로 연결되어 있는

현상인 ‘양자 얽힘(Quantum Entanglement)’에 대해서도 밝혔습니다. 현대물리학이 밝혀낸 이러한 사실들을 볼 수 있는 안경이 있다면, 그 안경을 쓰고 바라보는 세상 만물은 어떻게 보일까요? 저는 세상의 만물이 상호 연결된 파동에너지의 형태로 보이지 않을까 상상해 보았습니다.

현대물리학에서 밝힌 파동에너지는 기(氣)의 개념과 유사합니다. 정산 종사는 만유의 생기로써 그 개체를 생동 케 하는 힘을 기(氣)라고 하셨습니다. 그런데 이러한 기(氣)는 영(靈)과 합일하여 둘이 아닙니다. 현대물리학에서

는 이러한 사실을 아직 밝히지 못했지만, 기(氣)가 영지(靈知)를 머금고 영지가 기를 머금어, 기가 곧 영지요 영지 가 곧 기(氣)인 것입니다. 여기서 영(靈)은 만유의 본체로서 영원불멸한 성품을 말합니다. 영(靈)과 기(氣)가 둘이

아니나, 본체가 되는 것은 영(靈)입니다. 이 영(靈)은 원만구족하고 지공무사한 공적영지(空寂靈知)입니다. 공적한 가운데 신령하게 아는 우리의 본래 마음인 것입니다.2)

신령한 한 기운이 뭉쳐진 존재인 것입니다. 이렇게 만물은 각각 ‘신령한 한 기운’이 뭉쳐진 존재로서 만물과 ‘신령 한 한 기운’은 둘이 아닙니다. 우리는 이러한 경지가 우리 앞에 펼쳐져 있음에도 불구하고 그것을 볼 수 있는 안경 이 없어 보지를 못할 뿐입니다.

그러한 경지를 볼 수 있는 안경은 어떤 안경이며, 어떻게 하면 그 안경을 구할 수 있을까요? 그 안경은 마음의 안경입니다. 신령한 한 기운은 영(靈) 곧, 공적영지(空寂靈知)와 둘이 아닙니다. 그러므로 우리는 우리 본성인 공적영지를 회복함으로써 그 마음의 안경을 쓸 수 있습니다. 공적영지를 회복하는 방법은 선(禪)을 하 는 것입니다. 소태산 대종사는『대종경』수행품 12장에서 “선종(禪宗)의 많은 조사가 선(禪)에 대한 천만 방편과 천만문로를 열어 놓았으나, 한 말로 통합하여 말하자면 망념을 쉬고 진성을 길러서 오직 공적 영지(空寂靈知)가 앞

에 나타나게 하자는 것이 선(禪)”이라고 하셨습니다. 이는 우리 마음이 적적성성(寂寂惺惺)하고 성성적적(惺惺寂

寂)한 상태를 말합니다. 그러므로 우리가 우리를 포함한 만물의 참모습에 대한 바른 믿음을 가지고, 무시선과 무처

선으로 정진하여 망념을 쉬고 본성인 공적영지를 회복하면 만물이 각각 ‘신령한 한 기운’이 뭉쳐진 존재로서 처처 불상임을 알게 될 것입니다. 그리고 그러한 처처불상이 신령하게 감응하여, 죄를 주고 복을 주는 이치를 알아서 사 사불공하게 될 것입니다. 그뿐만이 아니라 영(靈)과 기(氣)는 합일하여 둘이 아니므로 공적영지를 회복하면 신령한

1. What future awaits us?

same time, the possibility that they can even choose between death and immortality.” The changes that could occur within the next 100

years range from human extinction due to the climate crisis to the demise caused by

artificial intelligence or even the possibility of evolving into a new species that can hardly be called human anymore, covering an overly extreme spectrum.

원불교는 신앙과 수행에 기반하여 낙원 세계로 인도

하는 새로운 종교로서, 세계 보편 종교 본연의 모습을 가지고 있지만 동시에 일상의 문제와 사회의 문제에 대해 적극적인 대안 제시와 실천을 병행하는 탈종교

적 일상운동의 종교였다. 그리고 종교연합 또는 종교 UR(United Religion)을 주창하는 통종교적 종교혁신 운동이기도 했다. 소태산 대종사 자신이 26세에 대각

을 이룬 후 제자들을 모아 처음 했던 일은, 바다를 막아 논을 만드는 경제활동이었으며 공동체 운동인 방언공

사였다. 종교적 선지자(A Seer)로서뿐 아니라 사회적

선각자(A forerunner)로서의 소태산이 바라본 미래는 요컨대 희망적이고 낙관적인 모습이었다.

이 극단적인 미래를 원불교를 창시한 소태산 대종사는

“돌아오는 세상이야말로 참으로 크게 문명한 도덕 세

있던 1916년, 26세에 대각을 한 소태산은 “물질이 개

세상의 처음이 되어, 시대의 앞 길을 추측하기가 퍽 어

어떻게 보았을까? 한국이 가장 어려운 시기를 보내고

년이 지난 지금 이 시점에서 다시 돌이켜 보면, 소태산

그렇게 든든하고 즐거운 미래를 추측하는 소태산의 준

국한되지 않는 혁명적 대안이었다고 본다.

비는 ‘과거에도 보지 못하였고, 미래에도 보기 어려운 아서 공부와 사업이 병진(竝進) 되게 하고, 모든 교법 을 두루 통합하여 한 덩어리‧한 집안을 만들어 서로

넘나들고 화하게 하여야 하기 때문에, 이렇게 일이 많

다고 소태산 대종사는 설명하였다. 이러한 미래 준비 의 핵심에 ‘정신 개벽’이 있고, 이것이 바로 원불교 개 교의 동기이다.

2. 소태산 대종사가 보여준 미래와 원불교의 교법 대각 이후 제자들과 함께 방언공사를 마친 소태산 대

종사는 천의(天意)를 감동시키기 위한 기도를 시작한 다. “모든 사람의 정신이 물질에 끌리지 아니하고 물 질을 사용하는 사람이 되어주기를 천지에 기도하여 천 110

의에 감동이 있게 하자.”4)고 당부한다.

에 이르기까지, 모든 이분법을 포괄하는 역동적 결합 연의 모든 갈등까지도 은혜적 관점으로 서로 시너지

(Synergy, 협력작용)를 이루는 자발적 실천 방법론의 제시였다.

원불교의 방언공사로부터 법인성사에 이르는 이 모든

과정은 원불교가 추구하는 종교와 탈종교, 그리고 모

든 교법을 두루 통합하는 통종교의 합리적 조화를 보 여준다. 갈등의 근원인 모든 극단을 아우르면서 그 극

단을 역동적으로 에너지화하는 시대정신을 제시한다. 그리고 절묘하게도 필자가 생각하는 한국인의 종교심

성 역시 종교적이면서 탈종교와 통종교를 아우른다.

국학연구기관인 한국학연구원에서는『문화정체성과 종교』라는 책에서 한국의 문화정체성을 가장 잘 대표 하는 종교로 원불교를 꼽는다.

3. 메타버스, AI-IA 시대의 원불교 마음공부6)

‘대중창작의 시대’에 접어들면서 누구나 창작하는 시대

짧은 지면을 통해 충분히 설명하기는 어렵지만 메타버

순환시키며 확장시킨다. 메타버스와 AI-IA는 긍정적인

측면에서 서로 만날 수 없었던 이분법을 기술적으로 연

로서 메타버스는 인문학적으로는 ‘집단지성, 대중 소 로는 메타버스가 ‘대중 각성의 시·공간’이 될 수 있다고 생각한다. 이렇게 메타버스와 AI-IA는 남녀노소와 선

악귀천(善惡貴賤)을 막론하고 누구에게나 처처불상과 사사불공, 그리고 무시선과 무처선을 통해서 천여래만

보살의 세계를 열고자 했던 소태산대종사의 미래 설계 와 만난다.

로의 초대’라고 본다. 메타퀘스트 3, 애플 비전프로 등 스 영역의 가장 큰 변화는 VR_메타버스(가상중심)에 서 AR_메타버스(현실중심)로의 전환-확장이다. AR_

메타버스는 현실의 시간과 공간에 가상의 요소가 겹쳐

지면서(Overlap) 연결-중첩-확장의 단계를 거쳐 가상 과 현실이 상호 시너지로 작용될 수 있다.

종교적 특성에 기반하되 넘어서서 탈종교적, 통종교적 특성을 아우르고 긍정적 관점과 역동적 조화를 통해

시대와 대중과 생활에 직면하려는 원불교의 역할이 필 요한 때이다.

On Won Buddhism and the circularity of things ※

by Carlos Jiménez Won Buddhism aspires to reconcile the disparity between material and spiritual civilization by

cultivating enlightenment and equilibrium in the mind. This reformed, modern Buddhist practice was established in Korea in 1916 by Founding Master Sotaesan (Park, Joongbin, 1891–1943).

The Houston center, the largest in Texas, is located in Spring Branch, twelve miles northwest of

downtown and bordered by Interstate 10 to the south and Loop 610 to the east. Spring Branch is a thriving neighborhood originally settled by German immigrant farmers in the mid 1800s. It continues to be a haven for immigrants to Houston and nurtures significant

Korean American and Hispanic communities. The once rural setting is now a diverse environment that mirrors Houston in its constant change. Driving north on Blalock Road from its intersection with Interstate 10, you encounter the disparate, unconstrained nature of Houston’s

typical development patterns. Low-density residential, commercial, and institutional uses are each prevalent and equally oblivious of their surroundings. What provides spatial consistency in this chaotic fabric is the natural verdure that permeates it.

This was the atmosphere I encountered on my first visit to the half-acre site. A low, one-story

brick house stood at the west end of the property, shaded by scattered trees. I was taken by the

majesty of three mature live oak trees closest to the house, providing protection with their leafy canopies as if hinting at the sanctuary to be. The adjacent properties seemed dissonant. One was a steel fabrication and construction operation, the other a noisy Camaro repair and restoration

garage. The 1,600 square-foot house, which served as the meeting place for the congregation, was removed to clear space for a new 6,000 square-foot building and the onsite parking required by City of Houston building codes.

The new program and its two-story building accommodate the Dharma Hall (a meditation and prayer room), a small gallery, a community library and kitchen, a private prayer room, reception, offices, and the minister’s living quarters and guest rooms on the second floor. The compact

design is made up of two square volumes linked by a transitional in-between space. This buffer zone is the gateway between the meditative and public activities of the center.

The wood, steel frame, and masonry structures are carefully positioned beneath the canopy of 117

venerable live oaks, their shape and shade complementing the right-angled architecture. The double-height Dharma Hall, the centerpiece of the complex, is placed at the east end of the

property, away from the noise of the busy four-lane commercial street to the west. It is further sheltered by a peripheral garden wall. This screening layer around the Dharma Hall attenuates

the audial and visual noise of the surroundings. Ivy climbs the wall, giving it the look of a green

cushion. The sparsely lit prayer and meditation room is the sacred space where services and ceremonies are held. A won (circle in Korean), the symbol of Won Buddhism, hovers above the low, cantilevered mahogany shelf of the altar. Its golden hue radiates the path of truth and enlightenment that guides the practice.

A favorite axiom from the teachings of Won Buddhism is “No matter how abundant certain things may be, if a person does not know how to use them sparingly, he will receive the

retribution of poverty.” Adhering to this adage, we sought a palette of quiet material and details

that would enhance the daily life of the center. It was important to honor the value of our temperate budget by investing in durable building components procured at reasonable prices.

Such enduring materials as solid white oak boards and natural stone coexist with such customary finishes as exposed concrete floors and off-the-shelf products. Consistent with other works of my

studio, we exalt light and time as architecture’s most exquisite materials, as they measure the passage of daylight and changes in seasonal foliage.

The design and construction work took almost six years, in part due to a protracted and difficult

permitting process, accompanied by the early upheavals of the COVID-19 pandemic. The center

was completed during the winter of 2020/2021. Three years earlier, and soon after the existing house had been demolished, I sat beneath the trees for a site ceremony attended by two Won

Buddhism ministers, several congregants, a benefactor, and the builder. I recall the beautiful prayers and chants that accompanied the grand yet modest ground-breaking festivity. It was

at this celebration that I understood the depth of gratitude that permeates the faith of Won 118

Buddhism. Its practitioners conduct their worldly and spiritual affairs in a constant state of grace.

This begins with an elegant greeting as their palms come together to acknowledge the beauty of all sentient beings, followed by the bounty of their smilesin respect for all that inhabits the world.

This publication commemorates the opening of Won Buddhism of Houston almost two years

after the building’s completion. During that interval, COVID-19 has raged across the world, making travel to and from the United States difficult for Won Buddhists members who wanted to

attend the opening and visit the new center. During these two years the building acclimated to its east-west coordinates. It was even tested by a record-breaking winter freeze in February of 2021 that wreaked havoc on Texas’s electrical grid and landscape alike. Several branches from one

of the trees fell, the ground cover and climbing ivy froze, but each has returned with surprising vigor. I mention these circumstances because every building begins life by entering a world of

unforeseen consequences. It is the ritual of beginning and its daily circularity that especially appeals to me about architecture. As long as I can remember, I have been enthralled by the ways

architecture lives in the constant narration of unforeseen events, even when a work is damaged, altered or destroyed. The ritual of beginning and the capacity to tell stories are the reasons why I

find architecture to hold its essential place in the world. This publication tells a story of how the

building came to be. It is my hope, with all of those involved in this humbling enterprise, that countless other stories can be found and read across these pages.

A work of architecture is a collective effort, a project of faith in the construction of a singular

place. This place is incomparably expansive in its reach of time, transcending the limits of site and of building. When I think of architecture, I see it quietly growing in this place, inhabiting its

Carlos Jiménez (Rice Architecture professor and principal of Carlos Jiménez Studio) teaches both undergraduate and graduate studios and a seminar on architecture, film, literature, and music case studies at

Rice Architecture. He began his teaching career at Rice as a visiting

critic in 1987 and as full time faculty in 1996. Professor Jiménez graduated with honors from the University of Houston College of Architecture in 1981, receiving best thesis and best portfolio awards. He

established, Carlos Jiménez Studio, in Houston in 1983. He has taught at numerous universities in addition to frequently acting as lecturer, Juror and Visiting Critic at universities and cultural institutions in

the US and internationally. He was a long-term jury member of the

Pritzker Architecture Prize (2001-2011). Carlos Jiménez has won several awards for excellence in design and teaching, The work of Carlos Jiménez Studio has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

In 2023, the National Academy of Design (www.nationalacademy.org) elected him as an architect of eight artists and architects as National Academicians.

원불교와 만물의 순환 ※

원불교의 공부는 깨달음과 마음의 균형을 쌓아감으로써 물질문명과 정신문명의 불균형을 조화 하고자 하는 뜻이

있다. 이렇게 개혁된 현대적인 불법 수행은 1916년 한국에서 소태산 대종사 (박중빈, 1891~1943)에 의해 시작되었 다. 휴스턴교당은 미국 텍사스주에서 가장 크며 스프링 브랜치에 위치해 있다. 이곳은 휴스턴 중심가에서 북서쪽

으로 12마일 거리이며, I-10 고속도로 남쪽과 610 순환도로 동쪽 선상에 가까이 있다. 스프링 브랜치 지역은 1800 년대 중반에 독일 이민자들이 일찍이 정착하였고, 지금까지 번영되고 있다. 이 지역은 차츰 휴스턴으로 오는 여러 이민자의 안식처가 되었고 상당한 한인들과 스페인계의 사람들이 지역사회를 형성하고 있다. 한때는 시골이었지 만, 이제는 끊임없이 변화하는 휴스턴의 모습을 반영하는 다양한 문화환경이 조성되었다. I-10 고속도로에서 나와

양상을 접하게 된다. 밀집도가 적은 주거지,

상업적이고 산업적인 용도의 건물들이 각각 일반적이지만 한결같이 그러한 주변 환경을 서로 의식하지 못한다. 이러한 혼돈스러운 구 조에서 공간적으로 일관성을 주는 것은 ‘자연 의 푸르름’이다.

이것이 약 0.5 에이커의 교당을 처음 방문해

서 느꼈던 주변 분위기이다. 낮은 일층 구조 의 벽돌 건물이 교당 부지의 서쪽 끝에, 흩어

져 있는 나무들의 그늘에 덮여 있었다. 나는

이 건물에서 가장 가까이 위치한 참나무 세 그루의 위엄에 놀랐으며 마치 성역을 암시하 듯 나뭇잎과 가지들로 건물을 보호하고 있었

다. 그러나 이웃들과는 조화가 맞지 않아 보 였다. 하나는 철 구조물 회사이고, 다른 하나

는 Camaro 컨셉 카센터였다. 교도들의 모

임 장소였던 1,600 스퀘어피트 공간을 허물고

6,000 스퀘어피트의 건물 신축과 함께 휴스턴 시의 건축 기준에 맞게 주차장을 설치했다.

새로운 구성요소로써 조성된 2층 건물에는 1

층에 선과 기도 공간으로써 법당, 작은 전시관 과 공공도서관, 작은 주방, 개인 기도실, 리셉

션 데스크, 사무실 등이 있고, 2층에는 교역자

숙소와 게스트룸이 있다. 이렇게 촘촘히 짜인 구조는 한 공간에서 다른 한 공간으로 바뀌는

연결 공간에 의해 두 개의 정사각형 모습으로 설계되었다. 이 연결 공간은 교당의 공공 활동 에서 교당의 수행 활동으로 이어지는 문의 역 할을 하고 있다.

목조, 철근, 벽돌로 이루어진 건축물은 교당 부지 오른쪽에 자리하고 있는데, 성스러운 참나무들이 감싸듯 그들이 제공하는 그늘과 형태에 건물은 조심스럽게 놓여 있다. 2층 높이의 법당은 이 건축물의 중심이며 교당 부지의 동쪽

끝에 위치하여 건물 서쪽의 분주한 4차선 도로의 소음으로부터 멀어져 있다. 또한, 법당 주변을 정원 벽이 둘러싸

고 있는데, 주변의 시각적 분주함과 소음을 줄여준다. 정원 벽을 에워싼 담장이는 포근함과 함께 녹음을 드리우고 있다. 빛이 조심스럽게 들어오는 법당은 성스러운 장소이며 법회와 의식이 진행된다. 마호가니 나무의 한쪽 면이 121

벽에 부착되어 불단이 조성되었는데, 원불교의 상징 으로써 일원상은 그 불단 위쪽에 높이 모셔져 있다.

일원상의 금빛은 수행으로 이끄는 진리와 깨달음의 길을 비춰준다.

원불교의 가르침에서 좋아하는 한 구절을 인용해 보 면, “아무리 흔한 것이라도 아껴 쓸 줄 모르는 사람은

빈천보를 받나니, ···”이다. 우리는 이러한 말씀을 따 라 교당의 일상생활에 적용할 수 있도록 단아한 재질 과 섬세함을 건축에 추구하였다. 적절한 가격으로 구

매한 튼튼한 건축 자재들을 사용함으로써 절제된 예

산을 지키는 것이 중요하였다. 그러한 견고한 자재들 이 하얀 색 참나무 원목과 자연석이며, 콘크리트 바

닥과 일반 기성품들도 다듬어서 함께 사용하였다. 나

의 건축 스튜디오의 다른 작품들처럼 우리는 빛과 시간을 건축물에서 가장 훌륭한 재료로 생각하였다. 햇빛의 통 과와 계절에 따른무성한 나뭇잎들의 변화를 살필 수 있기 때문이다.

이 디자인과 건축물의 완공에는 거의 6년이 걸렸다. 부분적으로는 오랜 시간이 걸린 까다로운 건축 허가 과정 때문 이었고, COVID-19 감염증의 유행이 전 세계에 시작되었기 때문이기도 하였다. 이 교당은 2020년 후반의 겨울에

완공되었다. 완공 3년 전 기존의 건물을 허물고 난 이후 나는 원불교의 두 교무님과 기부자, 몇몇 교도님들, 그리고 시공자와 함께 나무 아래에 앉아 엄숙하면서도 소박하게 진행된 기공식에서의 아름다운 기도와 염불을 기억한다.

이것은 원불교의 신앙으로부터 우러나오는 감사의 깊이를 이해할 수 있었던 축하 의식이었다. 수행자들은 꾸준하 게 은혜로움 속에서 하루하루 영성에 표준하여 일을 행한다. 이러한 일은 모든 중생의 아름다움을 인식하며 합장 이라고 하는 우아한 인사로 시작되며, 이어서 세상에 존재하는 모든 만물을 존중하는 함박미소가 뒤따른다.

이 책의 출판은 건물이 완공된 지 거의 2년 후에 거행되는 원불교 휴스턴교당의 봉불식을 기념한다. 그동안

COVID-19가 전 세계에 확산되면서 새로 완공된 교당의 방문을 원하는 원불교 교도들의 미국 여행을 어렵게 하였

다. 지난 2년 동안 이 건물은 교당 부지의 동서 방향으로 안착하였다. 건물은 2021년 2월 휴스턴 일대에 전력망과 자연환경에 심한 피해를 일으킨 기록적인 한파의 시련을 겪었다. 한 그루의 나무는 여러 가지가 꺾어졌고 벽을 타 고 오르는 담장 넝쿨도 얼었지만, 다시 놀랍게도 모두 생동감을 되찾았다. 내가 이러한 상황들을 언급하는 것은 모 든 건물은 결과를 예측할 수 없는 세계에 들어서면서 생이 시작되기 때문이다. 건축물의 시작과 하루하루의 순환

은 나를 건축에 사로잡게 하였다. 내가 기억하는 한, 건축물이 손상되고 변형이 되거나 혹은 파괴되더라도 나는 건 축물이 예상하지 않는 일들의 끊임없는 이야기 속에서 존재한다는 점에 매료되었다. 시작의 의식과 더불어 그 건

축물이 이야기들을 전할 수 있다는 힘은 내가 왜 건축이 세상에서 본질적인 위치에 있는지를 생각하게 하는 이유

이다. 이 책은 어떻게 건축이 진행되었는 지를 이야기한다. 이 고귀한 일에 함께한 모든 분과 책장을 넘기면서 많은 여러 이야기를 발견해 가기 바라는 마음이다.

건축은 어떤 유일한 공간을 건축하고자 하는 신념의 과제이며 공동의 노력이다. 이곳은 시간의 영역에서 비교할

수 없이 광대하며 장소와 건물의 한계를 초월하는 곳이다. 건축에 대해서 생각해 보면 건축물은 나무처럼, 어린아 이, 부모, 친구, 방문자, 박애주의자처럼 똑같이 은혜롭게 그 환경에서 살아가면서 그 장소에서 조용히 성장한다고 생각한다.

Venerable Sotaesan, the Founding Master The scriptures of Won Buddhism The Fundamentals of Won Buddhist Teaching

Park, Joongbin (1891~1943), better known

as Sotaesan, was born the son of peasants

on May 5, 1891 in Korea. His spiritual journey started with questions about natural

phenomenon and human relationships.

His determination to find answers to these questions eventually led to his great awakening on April 28, 1916.

​At the age of 26 on April 28, 1916 he attained enlightenment after twenty years of seeking

the truth and declared: “All things are of a single body and nature; all dharmas are of

A Study Becomes the Basis to All Others

Everything is of our mind’s creation. This is the essence of the Mind Cultivating. This world and our lives are the manifestation of our minds. Depending upon our state of mind, our lives can become happy or wretched, successful, or less than successful.

From the mind study we can learn how to use our minds. To use the mind well, we should first

know what the mind is like and how it works. Based on that understanding, we should cultivate

and use it skillfully in everyday situations. Our original mind is pure, bright, and wholesome, lacking nothing.

Everyone has a mind and is constantly using it.

The simple study and practice of mind can enrich our lives.

Who am I? How can I define myself?

All I can do is watch myself in order to truly define myself. Constantly

observing myself is the only way to get to know my self.

Whenever I observe myself, I come to discover

my true self in a realm of happiness.

I see my inner self in the same way that I look at the outside view from a moving bus. Before I knew it, my life has become a journey.
