Many of us love to have brunch, and gathering friends and family for it does not need to be fancy. With its prime positioning between breakfast and lunch, brunch is a more casual and lighter alternative to the typical dinner party. When charged with hosting a mid-day dining gathering, a little preplanning can go a long way toward ensuring your brunch gettogether is as simple as it is scrumptious.
Get creative with decor. When prepping your tablescape, think outside the box. Opt for unexpected serving dishes such as tartlet tins and vases and transfer syrups and jams from their everyday containers to glass bowls or creamers. Fresh flowers and produce can add natural pops of color to the table and a bowl of fruit can make for an eye-catching centerpiece.
Plan a variety of dishes. Make sure you have a mix of both sweet and savory dishes on the menu that can please a wide variety of palates. Earmarking some recipes that can be made ahead, like pastries and casseroles, can be a simple way to avoid waking up extra early to prepare. Save the morning of
your event for dishes that are best served fresh, like this Herbed Spanish Omelet, which features potatoes; fresh, spring herbs; and red onions, and packs protein, B-vitamins and cancer-protective phytochemicals.
Serve it buffet-style. Setting your spread out on the counter and allowing guests to help themselves not only makes it easier for the host to mingle, but it allows guests to customize their meals as they wish and gives the gathering a more casual vibe. Try themed stations, such as a coffee or mimosa bar, parfait bar or bread bar, in addition to more traditional dishes to let guests take the customization to the next level.
You can visit culinary.net for more brunch ideas and recipes. You can also include a delicious Herbed Spanish Omelet in your brunch options with this recipe reprinted with permission from the American Institute for Cancer Research.
Herbed Spanish Omelet Servings: 4
1 pound potatoes, peeled and diced or shredded water
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 cup diced red onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
4 large whole eggs, lightly beaten
2 egg whites, lightly beaten
2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley
2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh basil
2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh chives salt, to taste (optional) fresh herb sprigs, for garnish (optional)
Place potatoes in large pan. Cover with water. Bring to boil and cook, uncovered, 3 minutes. Remove from heat. Cover and let stand about 10 minutes, or until potatoes are tender. Drain well. In a deep, 10-inch nonstick skillet over medium heat, heat oil. Add onion and garlic. Cook about 8 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add potatoes and cook 5 minutes.
Combine whole eggs and egg whites. Stir in parsley, basil and chives. Season with salt, to taste, if desired. Pour mixture over potatoes in hot skillet. Reduce heat and cook, uncovered, about 10 minutes, or until bottom of omelet is golden. If desired, you can brown the top under a toaster oven. Garnish with fresh herb sprigs.

The National LGBTQ Task Force will host its annual gala, now called the ‘Be You Ball,’ at the Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, Florida on Saturday, October 11, 2025. The Be You Ball’s new location provides an elegant beachfront experience and will be hosted by actress Dominique Jackson, who is famous for her role as Elektra on the FX show Pose. Be sure to visit thetaskforce.org/be-you-ball to purchase your tickets. The Be You Ball takes place on National Coming Out Day and will gather our community to celebrate, amplify, and raise funds for South Florida’s local LGBTQ+ community and the Task Force.
Dominique is well-known for her extensive community work fighting for trans rights on the ground and in the digital space, and has raised awareness of the constant, rising violence against trans communities. Dominique is also a constant voice on screen for issues impacting the LGBTQ+ community, leading the 2025 Netflix documentary I’m Your Venus as an executive producer, which dives into the history of ballroom icon Venus Xtravaganza’s life and murder. Dominique received the National Leadership Award at the 2023 Gala in the spirit of the Forever Strong, Unapologetically Queer theme for her leadership and dedication to amplifying trans rights through her as a platform.
Task Force President Kierra Johnson stated, “We are thrilled to welcome Dominique back to the Task Force for our very first Be You Ball, a time to highlight and celebration queer joy. Dominique’s presence embodies what this event stands for: authenticity and power. Dominique’s alluring charisma and unapologetic love for the trans and queer community will shine brightly as she hosts the first gala in a new era for The Task Force.”
The Be You Ball is going to celebrate local honoree and CEO/ President of Our Fund Foundation David Jobin with the Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award. David said, “I am deeply honored to receive the Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award from the National LGBTQ Task Force, an organization whose relentless advocacy has shaped and strengthened our community for decades. At a time when LGBTQ rights are under direct attack in Florida and across the country, this recognition is a reminder that our work is far from finished.” Our Fund Foundation’s philanthropic mission solidifies LGBTQ wealth in a series of grants, investments and donations.
Another community event that I want to highlight this month is the URGE Miami Festival (November 28 to December 1). Visit urgemiamifestival.com to purchase your passes to the Festival and its four days of parties, including its renowned Beach Party.

Rafa Carvajal: Why is the opening of The Wiz such an important season launch?
Liz Wallace: The Wiz is a powerful story about home, heart and community—themes closely align with the mission of the Adrienne Arsht Center. As we enter our 20th season as Miami’s home for the performing arts, launching the season with a new production of a timeless story is a meaningful way to welcome audiences back and connect with new audiences.

LW: Reaching our 20th Broadway season is a moment of pride in what the Arsht has come to mean for an entire generation. We have created magical moments for more than six million people and free educational experiences for more than a million Miami-Dade students. This season is a celebration of that journey, which we share with the community. Our audience is part of the magic, and we are grateful for their continued support.
RC: What has made Broadway shows so successful at the Arsht Center?
LW: The success of Broadway at the Arsht stems from a deep commitment to curating seasons that reflect and celebrate Miami’s diverse cultural landscape and to present the best that Broadway has to offer. Our partners at Broadway Across America share this commitment and are a vital part of the success of Broadway in Miami. We’re intentional about selecting productions that speak to our community’s interests while also introducing new voices and stories. We have all seen the news about rainbow crosswalks being erased across Florida, but the stories and history of our LGBTQ community cannot be erased. It is in this context that the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival stands taller than ever and is returning for its 17th Annual Fall Edition with an emboldened lineup of queer storytelling, world premieres, special events, and exciting celebrations. OUTshine’s Fall Edition will open with Blue Moon, starring Ethan Hawke, which is a moving portrait of love, memory, and longing set on Broadway’s most historic night. Blue Moon’s premiere will be at Savor Cinema in Fort Lauderdale, followed by an afterparty at Masa & More. Two lively Spotlight film nights will feature The Children of Silverstreet and The Little Sister, both followed by a fun celebration at J.Marks. Regal Dania Pointe will be the setting for the Centerpiece presentation of The Captive, with a catered afterparty at Allura MD Aesthetics + Wellness. The Festival closes with Jimpa, starring John Lithgow, at Silverspot in downtown Miami, and an afterparty in partnership with Miami Film Festival.
The Fall OUTshine schedule also includes several special events and community favorites. Their popular Cocktails & Cinema series returns with Four Stars, Bear Week Diaries, and a 25th anniversary screening of Psycho Beach Party, complete with a retrothemed patio bash. The Shorts programs—Men’s, Ladies’, and the Best of Shorts compilation— will screen powerful and diverse stories highlighting the creativity and complexity of LGBTQ+ filmmakers. In total, the Fall Edition will feature 55+ films with 21 premieres from 25+ countries, underscoring OUTshine’s commitment to global queer cinema. Some of the highlights will include the World Premiere of Red Light (a local production), the International Premiere of Tethered Wings, and North American Premieres of Brown, Girls & Boys, Four Stars, Out of Love, and Away. There will also be East Coast Premieres of Newborn, Only Good Things, 3670, Army of Lovers, My Heaven Your Hell, and Body Blow.
OUTshine’s Mark Gilbert pointed out that “Florida’s rainbow crosswalks may be under attack, but OUTshine reminds us that our stories, our culture, and our community can never be erased.” So we preview some of the films with those stories for you.
BLUE MOON
USA. Director: Richard Linklater
OUTshine Synopsis:
Richard Linklater crafts a haunting, queer-inflected chamber drama set on the pivotal night of March 31, 1943. Ethan Hawke delivers a revelatory performance as Lorenz Hart—the brilliant, alcoholic, and closeted lyricist—who spends the evening in Sardi’s bar grappling with his fading career and the ache of unrequited desire. Meanwhile, Andrew Scott plays his estranged and newly successful writing partner Richard Rodgers, whose triumph with Oklahoma! underscores Hart’s sense of obsolescence and isolation. With stunning turns from Margaret Qualley and Bobby Cannavale, the film poignantly explores queer loneliness, artistic legacy, and the painful cost of visibility in a heteronormative world. Rich with jazz, Broadway nostalgia, and existential longing, Blue Moon is both elegy and love letter—to New York, to music, and to a gay man silenced by his time.
Spain & Italy. Director: Alejandro Amenábar
OUTshine Synopsis:
In 1575, Miguel de Cervantes—the future author of Don Quixote—is wounded in naval battle and taken captive by corsairs, imprisoned in Algiers under the watch of the formidable Bey Hasan. Amid fear, uncertainty, and the struggle for survival, Cervantes turns to storytelling, weaving tales that inspire his fellow prisoners and spark an unexpected intimacy with his captor. What begins as a test of wills slowly reveals a complex bond—tinged with desire, fascination, and power—that reshapes them both. The Captive is a sweeping historical drama exploring resilience, freedom, and the dangerous, transformative pull of human connection.
Australia. Director: Sophie Hyde
OUTshine Synopsis:
Hannah (Olivia Colman) travels to Amsterdam with her nonbinary teen, Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde), to visit her estranged father, Jim (John Lithgow), a vibrant, openly gay man navigating life and love in his later years. When Frances expresses a desire to stay with Jim for a year, Hannah must confront her own beliefs about parenting, family, and identity. Lithgow’s charismatic performance captures Jim’s humor, resilience, and tender guidance, offering both heart and levity. Jimpa is a semi-autobiographical drama about reconciliation, queer identity, and the evolving bonds between parents and children, revealing the courage it takes to embrace love on one’s own terms.
France. Director: Thierry Binisti
OUTshine Synopsis:
On the day of his wedding, Paul is thrown into emotional turmoil by the unexpected arrival of Joseph—his first love—who vanished from his life after a transformative summer in 1983. As teenagers, their relationship burned with intensity and hope, only to be shattered by a violent act of homophobia that forced them apart. Now, decades later, their reunion unearths a flood of unresolved feelings, painful memories, and unspoken truths. Through charged glances and uneasy conversation, the two men confront the scars of their past, exploring love, loss, and the enduring impact of choices made under the weight of fear and prejudice.
THE CHILDREN OF SILVERSTREET
Denmark. Director: Mehdi Avaz
OUTshine Synopsis:
When four siblings are left to fend for themselves after their mother disappears, they hire Miss Nelly—a flamboyant, openly gay aspiring actor—as their fake nanny to avoid being split up by social services. What begins as a ruse soon blossoms into a heartfelt connection. Miss Nelly, despite his chaotic life and theatrical flair, becomes an unexpected guardian figure, offering the children emotional stability, humor, and a sense of belonging. As authorities close in and secrets fray at the edges, The Children of Silverstreet evolves into a tender, humorous, and quietly radical story about chosen family, queer caregiving, and the courage to protect what matters most.
