PUBLISHER’S CORNER RECHARGE AND REFRESH WITH A SUMMER VACATION

Welcome to our June issue. This month we go behind the lens of photographer James Franklin to learn about his work and enjoy photos of some of the sexy male models he has photographed. In Dining Delicious, we preview the new Amara at Paraiso brunch by award-winning Chef Michael Schwartz. Better Living provides you five valuable tips for new pet owners, and our photo albums bring you pics from the Pride CommuniTEA Dance at the Arsht Center and Fridays at TWIST with DJ Tony Zuccaro.

Summer officially began in our Northern Hemisphere on June 20 with the summer solstice, and many of us may be contemplating the possibility of taking vacation or have planned to do so. Summer vacation is more than just a break from routine—it's a golden opportunity to recharge, refresh, and reconnect with what truly matters. In our fast-paced world, where work and responsibilities often take center stage, taking time off during the summer is essential for both physical and mental well-being.

One of the biggest benefits of summer vacation is the chance to relax and reduce stress. Whether it's lounging on a beach, hiking through nature, or simply enjoying a quiet morning with coffee and sunshine, these moments help lower cortisol levels and improve mood. Stepping away from daily pressures allows the mind to reset, leading to better focus and productivity when you return to work.

Summer also encourages healthier habits. With longer days and warmer weather, you can engage in more outdoor activities like swimming, biking, or walking. These not only boost physical health but also enhance mental clarity and happiness. Fresh seasonal foods, like fruits and vegetables, are more accessible, making it easier to eat well, be healthier, and feel energized.

Equally important is the emotional benefit of spending quality time with your loved ones. Vacations create lasting memories and strengthen relationships with partners, friends and family, which are key to a fulfilling life. Even a short getaway or a staycation can provide the mental space needed to reflect, dream, and plan for a better future.

In short, your summer vacation is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. It’s a joyful reminder to slow down, breathe deeply, and savor life. So go ahead, embrace the sunshine, explore new places, travel to exciting destinations, or simply unwind at home. Your body, mind, and spirit will thank you for it!

Cheers,

BETTER LIVING

FIVE TIPS FOR NEW PET OWNERS

Many of us love pets and may be considering getting a new companion for our daily living. Welcoming a new pet is exciting, but preparation is needed to provide a loving home and enjoy the unconditional affection they can give to us.

You can prepare your furry friend for the new home you are planning to provide them with these essential tips for first-time pet owners.

Choose the Right Pet for Your Lifestyle

As you get ready to get your new pet, you should consider your living situation, work schedule and personal preferences. It is important to research different breeds to find the one that matches your activity level, living space and family dynamics. Also consider any allergies or sensitivities you or your family may have as some pets may trigger allergies or asthma symptoms

Set Up Your Home

Before bringing your new pet home, create a safe and comfortable environment for them. Start by pet-proofing your home, removing any hazardous substances, and securing loose wires or cords. Make sure to store cleaning supplies, medications, and toxic plants out of reach of your new friend. Provide a designated space that includes a cozy bed or crate, food and water bowls and toys to make your new pet feel right at home.

Create a Routine

Be sure to also establish a consistent schedule for feeding, exercise, and bathroom breaks. Determine the appropriate amount and frequency of meals for your pet’s age, size, and breed. Spend quality time with your pet daily, providing attention, affection, and mental stimulation because they need it.

Budget for Your Pet’s Needs

Owning a pet comes with financial responsibilities, so it is very important to consider the costs of food, grooming, veterinary care, vaccinations, and preventive medications and create a budget for them. Additionally, factor in the cost of toys, bedding, litter, and other supplies that you will want to purchase for your new friend.

Find a Reliable Veterinarian

Regular check-ups and open communication with a local veterinarian can help detect any potential health issues early and ensure your pet receives the best possible care and lives a long, happy, and healthy life. Ask friends, family, or neighbors with pets for provider recommendations and read reviews from their clients to learn more about them. Visit potential veterinarians’ offices to meet the staffs, tour the facilities and ask any questions you may have.

BEHIND THE LENS OF JAMES FRANKLIN

Instagram: @rafa_carvajal
Photos by James Franklin @JamesFranklinOfficial

Rafa Carvajal: How did you become a photographer?

James Franklin: I studied photography at a small junior college in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. It turned out this campus had the best outfitted labs in the state of Texas.

RC: How would you describe your photography work?

JF: Timeless Classic. I try to produce photo work that will stand the test of time. I get there are a lot of trends out there, but I've been a photographer for over 30 years, and I've seen trends come and go. I didn't want my work to disappear after a season but be timeless and last forever.

RC: Why did you decide to pursue a career as a photographer?

JF: Back in 1990, I wasn't happy about my situation in life. I needed to do something that would make me happy. I decided to go back to school to pursue a career in photography. Photography was very open to various types of work. My hope was to be the next Herb Ritts photographing celebrities and beautiful people for magazines.

RC: You work with a lot of beautiful men. How do you keep composed?

JF: The guys I photograph are people like everyone else and they deserve respect like the rest of us do. At the end I'm making pretty photos. It's not an opportunity to grab a feel. That's what hook up apps are for. I got into photography to be creative.

RC: What do you miss about how the work used to be?

JF: I would assume you mean working with film over digital. I really don't miss anything about film. It's a lot more labor-intensive processing, printing, scanning, and cleaning up film. Digital is much faster and easier to work with. No one wants film anymore. Everything is digital. Even with print it works so much better with digital files over film.

RC: Where can our readers see more of your work?

JF: I'm published in Vogue, DNA magazine, CHIC Compass , Women's World magazine, and Wire Magazine.

RC: What do you enjoy the most about photography?

JF: Being creative.

RC: You have been published the entirety of your career, which is a rare thing amongst most photographers. How did that start and how have you kept it going for so long?

JF: Back in the 90's, I knew sex sold and I wanted to be a published photographer. In my first semester of photography, I asked go-go boys out at the bars if they had any interest in doing photos and surprisingly most said yes (I was young and cute back then). One of the shots I did got published in a bar magazine called This Week In Texas. I called them up and they offered me a job. From that point my career took off. I photographed everyone for that magazine. Eventually I moved over to The Dallas Voice and then expanded my work to calendars, posters, and cards with 10% Productions.

With that, I got my artwork on the Showtime show Queer As Folk. After moving to Los Angeles, I started meeting various celebrities who liked my photo work and my work elevated to another level by getting published in the trades and other print publications. My latest published work was in Vogue with Jane Fonda.

RC: Wow! Jane Fonda. Who else have you worked with?

JF: Donna Mills was my first girl magazine cover. She was a dream, and we still talk today. I've also worked with Ann-Margret, Linda Gray, Nicollette Sheridan, Carnie Wilson and quite a few others. All of them have been wonderful to photograph. Carney referred me to Owen Elliot (Cass Elliot's daughter) to do the author photo for her book My Mama Cass. Because of that I'm connected to a tiny part of Rock and Roll history.

RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers?

JF: Never be afraid to try. The worst that happens is you fall on your face. The best that happens is you succeed.

DINING DELICIOUS

AMARA AT PARAISO WATERFRONT SUNDAY BRUNCH

I have always enjoyed a nice Sunday brunch and beautiful waterfront views. Amara at Paraiso by James Beard award winning Chef Michael Schwartz offers both to Miami foodies and diners on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. I decided to check it out on a recent Sunday, and no other brunch offers such a stunning bayfront location with ocean views and a large variety of dishes by an award-winning chef well-known for being part of Miami’s dining scene for many years. We started our relaxing brunch experience with a Monkey Business cocktail from the Coconut Bar crafted in a fresh Florida coconut with Plantation O.F.T.D. rum, bourbon Appleton 12year rum, spiced banana, and pineapple; and a Jalisco by Night signature cocktail with reposado tequila, ancho reyes chile, Nixta licor de elote, tamarind agave, lime, habanero, and salt.

Chef Michael’s ‘love letter’ to Miami combines chef driven dishes and Latin inspired twists in a truly breathtaking waterfront buffet setting. Every Sunday afternoon, you can enjoy creative flavors and refreshing cocktail packages in a tropical oasis with unmatched views of Biscayne Bay in the heart of Miami’s Edgewater neighborhood. In addition to the plethora of brunch dishes, desserts, and delightful cocktails you will enjoy a lively waterfront atmosphere with a live DJ— entirely designed by Amara to appeal to all your senses.

Latin inspired dishes and market-fresh spins on classic brunch food offerings. Following Chef Michael’s cooking philosophy, Amara’s brunch menu rotates regularly so diners can enjoy the best locally sourced ingredients in their mouthwatering fare. According to Chef Schwartz, “this has been in the works for a while and we’re really excited to bring this to life... there is truly something for everyone. We’re combining the best of Amara’s offerings along with exciting new dishes by Chef Gaston and laying it out in an unbelievably abundant and delicious spread... what could be better?”

We selected our favorite brunch choices by walking throughout Amara’s sophisticated dining room to choose from the following options:

Raw Bar: Oysters & Chilled Shrimp, Ceviche, Causa, Lobster Roll, Octopus Salad, Mussels Escabeche and Tuna Tartare.

Eggs & Breakfast: Soft Scrambled Eggs, Overnight Oats, Fresh Fruit, Spanish Tortilla, Breakfast Burritos, Quiche, Bacon, and Sausage.

Carving Station: Salt Baked Salmon and a Charcoal Grilled Steak.

Entrées: Brazilian inspired Moqueca, Peruvian Roasted Chicken and Vegetable Paella, and Truffle Creamy Rigatoni.

For desserts, Pastry Chef Maite Zarrabeitia created a tasteful array of homemade desserts and confections that included Dulce de Leche Flan, Crème Brûlée Custard Tart, Alfajores, Coconut Cake, Cookies, Strawberry Scones, and much more. We also enjoyed three yummy ice cream flavors.

The complete brunch buffet starts at $89 per person (and $48 for children under the age of 12 years old). Refreshing nonalcoholic beverages are also included, such as fresh pressed juices, elixirs, and smoothies.

If you love cocktails, the brunch bottomless drink packages start for an additional $35 per person. The entry level ‘Sip’ option includes unlimited Lallier Champagne, Albarino, Rosé, Malbec, Mimosas, Bloody Marys, and Bellinis. If you prefer the ‘Savor’ package ($60 per person) you can enjoy everything in the ‘Sip’ option plus Amara’s signature cocktails and house spirits.

You can also really splurge with the ‘Soirée’ option ($200 per person) featuring endless Dom Perignon vintage Champagne, specialty wines, premium spirits, signature cocktails, classic brunch beverages and special, handcrafted tropical coconut libations.
