HAMILTON RETURNS TO THE BROWARD CENTER

Rafa Carvajal: What cast member are you on Hamilton ? Taylor N. Daniels: I play George Eacker in act two! I’m also man four throughout the show.

RC: What do you enjoy the most about being on the cast of Hamilton ?

TND: Seeing the audience see the show all over the country for the first time.

RC: What does it take to prepare and be ready to perform as a Hamilton cast member every night?

TND: A whole night’s sleep and hydration. I try to go to the gym five times a week.

RC: What makes Hamilton such a special Broadway musical?

I have been very fortunate to see many of the best Broadway Musicals. Hamilton is certainly one of them, but it also falls into a class of its own as ‘best of the best.’ If you have not seen Hamilton or want to see it again, I strongly recommend seeing it at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts November 22 to December 11, 2022. Visit browardcenter.org to purchase your tickets.

This Broadway Musical also holds a very special place in my heart because Alexander Hamilton is considered the Father of the United States Coast Guard. As a graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy with high honors, I vividly remember the first time I set foot at the Academy and went up the imposing steps of Hamilton Hall, a centerpiece building of the sprawling campus that became my home and university for four of the most amazing years of my life.

Hamilton is truly fascinating to me because it is the story of America when the founding fathers were alive yet told by America now with a score that combines hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway. This brilliant musical has had a weighty impact on our culture, politics and education.

Hamilton’ s book, music and lyrics are by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler, and musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire. Hamilton has won Tony, Grammy, and Olivier Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and an unprecedented special citation from the Kennedy Center Honors. The Hamilton recording also received a 2016 Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album.

I sat down with Hamilton cast member Taylor N. Daniels to chat about the show.

TND: You can see a part of yourself represented regardless of your background.

RC: Tell our readers why they should go see Hamilton TND: Because it’s a good time! Amazing talent, and I’m in it, haha!

RC: What is it like to be on the cast of such an iconic Broadway show as Hamilton ? TND: It’s hard work, but it’s so fulfilling. Truly a dream come true.

RC: What is the best part of performing in such a popular Broadway musical?

TND: The immediate reaction to hearing the title. Almost everyone knows Hamilton .

RC: What else would you like to share with Wire Magazine readers?

TND: I’m excited to spend time in Ft. Lauderdale! Also, I have tickets to Pig Week… see ya there!

PUBLISHER’S CORNER TOGETHER WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD

In last month’s issue, I asked all our readers to vote like our lives depending on it, because they do. Today, as I sat on vacation at the beautiful farm in DeFuniak Springs, Florida where I go to every year to relax, rest and de-stress during the holidays, I read the terrible news that a gunman had opened fire inside an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, killing five people and injuring 25 others. Many more would have been murdered if it wasn’t for the brave and quick action of some people inside the club who fought the assassin and took him down, preventing much greater loss of life.

It was to Colorado Springs that I took the United States Coast Guard Academy Pistol Team as assistant coach for the National Collegiate Championships. We placed third in the nation during the competition. Even though I believe in the right to bear arms and was a member of the Academy pistol team, and then the assistant coach after graduation, I strongly believe in sensible gun control. I find it extremely infuriating that killers continue to commit atrocious acts of gun violence because some politicians refuse to change our laws to prevent them from getting their hands on weapons designed for war.

We must continue to speak loudly against gun violence and demand that laws be changed to prevent future mass killings. No one is allowed to purchase rocket launchers or tanks as part of their right to bear arms, so limits do exist because they make sense. Our LGBTQ community has experienced another senseless act of violence, just like the ones in so many schools and houses of worship, because one political party is so obstinate and in the pockets of the NRA that they refuse to do what is right and long overdue. These are some of the same people who refuse to speak up against the violence of insurrectionists who attacked the United States Congress to try and stop an election they lost.

As mad as I am about this latest mass shooting that took the lives of some of our fellow LGBTQ citizens, I am encouraged by the power exercised by millions who voted in the recent midterm elections to neutralize the expected so called ‘red wave’ that never materialized. As a society, we can exercise our rights to elect people who share our beliefs and want to change the laws that discriminate against us or fail to protect our rights. Remember that when the next election comes around! People working together for a common goal can change the world. Our LGBTQ community has proven this time after time, when very courageous members have fought valiantly to defeat discrimination and pass laws giving us the same rights many of our fellow citizens take for granted.

JEFF GRANT

Rafa Carvajal: Where are you from and where do you live now?

Jeff Grant: I am from a town right outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania called Hanover. I currently live in Tampa, Florida

RC: What is your profession?

JG: I am the Vice President of Sales of a Solar Energy Company called ESD Solar.

RC: How do you maintain such a fit body?

JG: I am on a very consistent training routine where I lift weights six days a week and do cardio six days a week – either at the gym after weights or go for a run outside. I also maintain a strict diet mostly year-round.

12 WIREMAG.COM #11 2022

RC: What are your most important three exercises to stay in shape?

JG: If your goal is to be super lean, really the most important aspect is probably cardio, which I know a lot of readers probably don't want to hear. Then if I had to pick two exercises, I would say alternating bicep curls and hanging leg raises for abs. Those are two very comprehensive exercises for the two body parts I care about looking good the most!

RC: Which foods do you eat to stay fit?

JG: I eat a diet that consists mostly of seafood, vegetables, eggs and raw cashews, and almonds. I try to stay away from flour and most carbs. My carb sources are mostly Ezekiel (flourless) breads, oatmeal, brown rice and sweet potatoes. I also try to limit red meats to when I go out for a nice dinner.

RC: Why do you enjoy modeling for photography?

JG: I have been enamored with modeling and photography since I was a kid. I would read bodybuilding and men's fashion magazines and dreamt one day of being able to go to the store and look through the magazine section and being in one of them. I also just really love coming up with creative concepts and then being able to create them.

#11 2022 WIREMAG.COM 13

RC: What are your favorite hobbies?

JG: I love to travel. I do as much traveling as I can, and this past year was a really great year because I had a chance to go to some really amazing places. I actually have learned to really enjoy cooking. When you are on a diet all the time you have to learn to cook and also change things up with limited options, haha! Also, anything active: gym, running, sports. I'm the type of person who will go a week without turning on my TV, and I don't own any video systems or anything.

RC: What is the biggest dream you would like to achieve?

JG: I feel really fortunate to be living a lot of it. I always wanted to model and be in magazines, etc. Not only have I been lucky enough to have not only done it, but I've done it for a long time – much longer than

I ever thought I would. I also wanted to have a successful business career, but I always want to do more and have more success in those areas. Outside of that, I've always wanted to star in a major motion picture. I still have ways to go on that goal!

RC: Who is the person or public figure that inspires you most and why?

JG: Growing up you have athletes and others, but as I got older it became my dad. He worked hard to become a successful and wellrespected businessman but was always so humble about it. He always put us, his family, first and without him I know I wouldn't have the success I had in any of what we have been talking about.

RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers?

JG: I appreciate anyone that actually took the time to read this entire interview! Please follow me on social media: Instagram @realjeffgrant, Facebook @officialjeffgrant and Twitter @realjeffgrant.

FLIX

D.O.A.

films of the period, having been re-made four times for the big screen over the years. This version, to my knowledge, marks the fifth incarnation of the story and it holds true to the venerable genre.

Here’s the storyline… Frank Bigelow (John Doe) is a grizzled older private detective hired to follow the husband of a St. Augustine socialite. What seems like another boring but easy job, turns into a nightmare when Frank discovers that he's been poisoned by someone and has only days to live.

With time running out and the pain of dying setting in, he begins to unravel the mystery of who ‘killed’ him and why they did it. To succeed, he has to get down and dirty with the scum of the city, the uber rich, and the femme fatale whose protector it seems may hold all the answers. Will he solve the mystery in time or wind up as alligator food?

You can tell that Director Kurt St. Thomas took pains to visually match the period of the story. Utilizing all the possible locations of St. Augustine, Florida, the country’s oldest city, he succeeded in rendering a great re-visioning of the late 1940’s and early 50’s.

What’s missing here, what would have made it a great film instead of just a good one, are the depth of feelings, thoughts and actions of some of the story’s characters. While creating the overall look and mood a few peripheral characters became caricatures of who and what they were supposed to be. It took me out of the fantasy for several moments. There were, however, some great performances, namely by John Doe, John Byner, and Kevin Crowley.

If you’re a Film Noir fan, as I am, you know that most of the good films of this genre start with what has become a mainstay event, a strange woman walks into a private detective’s office and hires him for a seemingly simple but questionable job (i.e. The Maltese Falcon , The Big Sleep ).

The Noir or Neo-Noir film style developed during the ‘Cold War Era’ when the fear of nuclear destruction brought out a sort of cynical style of thinking that led directly to the creation of these highly stylized, generally low budget Hollywood crime dramas.

You can easily recognize these films by their shadowy, low-key, black and white, cinematic style, and by the hardboiled crime stories that they are derived from.

D.O.A. (Dead On Arrival) is one of the more intriguing

My take… If you just sit back and take D.O.A. for what it is, a good Noir Detective flick, you’ll find it a fascinating and interesting mystery ride from start to finish, particularly if you’ve never seen another version of the film.

Rating: 4 Stars (out of 5). D.O.A. is not yet rated. Running Time: 1 hour & 22 minutes.

Interview of Director Kurt St. Thomas

It was two o’clock in the afternoon when I called. The phone was answered instantly. He was expecting my call. Where would it lead? Who was this man at the other end of the line? What information did he have for me? I was about to find out!

18 WIREMAG.COM #11 2022
Kurt St. Thomas is the director of D.O.A. , which was Directed by: Kurt St. Thomas Cast: John Doe, Grace H. Bryan, John Byner, Anne Gaybis and Kevin Crowley

premiered at the 37th Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. I enjoyed the film, so I was looking forward to our conversation. Kurt is based in St. Augustine, Florida, but spent a large part of his career in Los Angeles. He was born in Virginia, raised in Pennsylvania, and attended Ashland University.

After college, he worked at several popular radio stations including KROQ, WFNX and WAQX. In 2008, he launched ‘Houndstooth Radio’ in his garage, which helped launched a number of new artists. St. Thomas went on to work with Clive Davis at Arista Records before turning to filmmaking.

D.O.A. is his fifth film. I asked him why he chose to remake the film and he said that he was a Noir fan, that he’d always liked the original, and he told himself if he ever got the chance to remake it, he’d do it. When he found that the rights were in the public domain he was on his way.

With writing partner Nicholas Griffin, they came up with the story and he then shot it in about 27 days, utilizing as many locations as possible in St. Augustine, Florida, a city ripe with 40’s and 50’s buildings. He chose John Doe as his lead character, having worked with him before, and finding out that John Byner lived in the area, approached him to take on an important role. He found the city and its people very cooperative and giving, but some thought he was nutz making a movie in their town. The result is a beautiful and winning tribute to both the genre and the original film. It’s a very enjoyable film.
