October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and once again pink is the vibrant color of the cause. From longtime activists and survivors to the National Football League and, if some organizations get their way, the tips of drills used for oil and gas "fracking," pink is the color of the month. I choose to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the beauty of pink in honor of my mom, a breast cancer survivor who is still with my brothers and I thanks to early detection and a willingness to persevere against very difficult odds.
While heart disease remains the most deadly danger to women, statistically, and while breast cancer awareness is more and more in the public consciousness every year, the sheer numbers associated with the latter make it a continued pervasive plague that touches millions of people's lives — including my mom’s. Furthermore, given medical advances, there remains the threat of apathy when the exact opposite is required for awareness, prevention and a future cure.
