W hat began with relatively humble origins has today grown to become the country’s foremost showcase of film – a creative parallel to the commercial and celebrity-driven Academy Awards. The Sundance Film Festival, January 21-31, doesn’t celebrate box office numbers and doesn’t attract scores of media members more interested in what celebs are wearing than what wins for Best Foreign Language entry. No one has to ask if any of the eventual winners have actually seen anyone else’s film. There are no high-profile hosts entertaining attendees in between screenings with rehearsed scripts and applause signs.
There are movies and then there are films. Sundance celebrates films.
That said, Sundance was not born with success being a given.
