This week's very hot cover and centerfold model is Jordan Williams, who was born in Onawa, Iowa, and currently lives in Overland Park, Kansas. This very attractive man has a big passion for art, animals and the environment, and stays in shape by consistently dieting, weightlifting and practicing yoga and meditation. Jordan also melted my heart when he told me about taking his dog home from the shelter. I want one! In Dining Delicious, I tell you about the other very delicious item in this week's issue – Traymore. This new restaurant by renowned chef Michael Schwartz, located at the COMO Metropolitan Miami Beach, combines Schwartz's passion for fresh, clean Floridian flavors with bright Asian influences. The food was excellent and I also enjoyed its charming Art Deco setting. If you like great movies, go see Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, which we preview for you in Flix. According to our film critic Alyn Darnay, this movie is spectacularly ambitious, touchingly nostalgic, engrossing, and hits you with a batch of surprises. It's definitely a Tarantino film and a good one. Last but not least, since our "verano" is still in full swing, Shopping Bag showcases a selection of cool sandals for summer from Giuseppe Zanotti, Gucci, Kenzo, and Versace.

DESTINATIONS

he first time I became familiar with the British Virgin Islands, residents and visitors would tell me that the 60-plus islands were the end of the line. They were described to me as the end of the supply line and where (mostly) Brits fled to, to get to the end of the fading empire, away from prying eyes and living free in one of the most scenic destinations in the world. In those years, many years ago, one could run into fascinating characters over rum drinks and there was an atmosphere reflecting the whole end-of-the-line destinations, the way Key West residents felt about our own southernmost point. My, how things have changed. In our monumentally smaller world, there are a lot more places in which to lose oneself. The BVI aren't as maverick or as off the grid as they were 30 years ago. But beautiful? Off the beaten path? Fascinating people? You bet. The BVI have never lost that, even while evolving into one of the great – and easy – destinations for South Floridians in particular? You bet.

8 WIREMAG.COM #17 2019

The BVI consist of four large islands and more than 50 smaller islands. The largest remain the prime attractions. Be drawn in by Virgin Gorda's natural granite pillars. Rediscover play and adventure in Tortola. Let the island spirit move you on Jost Van Dyke. Glimpse perfection in Anegada. No matter where you land, you'll find friendly people, incredible beaches and recreational activities that exceed all expectations. Not bad for the end of the world, right? OK, so not the end of the world. But, it was once considered the end of the civilized world to some. The attractions you find will be natural. BVI is about enjoying nature, including the natural impulse to enjoy a bar or restaurant. Powdery white-sand beaches, lush green mountains, and sheltered, yacht-filled harbors characterize the island of Tortola, the BVI's largest and capital island. Dozens of beaches, including Apple Bay, Brewer's Bay, Smuggler's Cove, Long Bay Beach, Elizabeth Beach, and Josiah's Bay Beach (to name just a few) characterize this large island. Watersports abound for those seeking the more active. Don't miss the protected anchorages at Brandywine Bay, Soper's Hole and Trellis Bay and surfing Cane Garden Bay, or game fishing the North and South Drops, and tear yourself away from the sand just long enough to discover Tortola's history with a visit to the 1780 Lower Estate Sugar Works Museum, Fort Burt, Mount Healthy Windmill, Callwood's Rum Distillery, J.R. O'Neal Botanic Gardens, Old Government House Museum and VI Folk Museum. Enjoy the natural splendor, bars, and restaurants of tiny Jost Van Dyke. Suggestion: try some dishes here you might not find elsewhere, as they have a notable authenticity.

By Michael W. Sasser

Anegada is flat and surrounded by coral reefs. That means sport diving and fishing, with some memorable underwater scenery and wrecks for the Scuba or skin diver. On the unfortunately named Virgin Gorda, enjoy a quintessential Caribbean vacation, stroll or swim at the unspoiled beaches at Savannah Bay, Pond Bay, Devil's Bay, Mahoe Bay or Spring Bay. Here you will find vestiges of the islands' colonial history, particularly at the Spanish ruins at Little Fort National Park and the Cornish Copper Mines. In the BVI, we are talking more casual, Caribbean attractions than many destinations in the region. Instead of walled resorts and stratified compounds, they have open doors, welcoming locals and natural splendor. Your best meal might come on one of the smaller islands cooking up local fish caught in the past few hours, grilled simply and served with humble regional ingredients like breadfruit and local greens. The BVI beg for exploration for tailoring to specific tastes, and to the curious. Oh, there are tremendous resorts on the islands, from Bitter End Yacht Club to fascinating private Guana Island to Mango Bay Resort. And there are quaint and sometimes elegant accommodations like Anegada Reef Hotel to Emerald Crest Villa, and many others. But since a visit to BVI is really about the luxurious out-of-doors, does it really matter? Figure your budget accordingly and do some browsing. You won't spend much time indoors. Instead, you'll choose which beautiful remote location seems most scenic to you, which water sport is most appealing and just how far o the beaten path you want to go for real serenity. After all, isn't serenity what one looks for at the edge of civilized society? Even if maybe, that edge has extended just a little bit farther as the world has grown smaller.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD nce upon a time… a brash 29-yearold writer-director showed up at the Cannes Film Festival with a movie he called Reservoir Dogs. It was a unique and bloody twist on a 'post crime caper film' that blasted its way onto the screen, became the must-see movie of the year, and propelled Quentin Tarantino into the unique category of 'mega-celebrity director.' What followed over the years was a string of really great films in his distinct style; Pulp Fiction,  Jackie Brown, Kill Bill V1 & V2, Death Proof, Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained, and The Hateful Eight. In Once Upon a Time, the now 59-yearold filmmaker brings us his most personal film to date, a love letter to the Hollywood he cherishes, but was not old enough to ever experience. It's rather like seeing what's really inside Marsellus' briefcase.

DIRECTED BY:

QUENTIN TARANTINO

SCREENPLAY BY:

QUENTIN TARANTINO

CAST:

LEONARDO DICAPRIO, BRAD PITT, MARGOT ROBBIE, EMILE HIRSCH, MARGARET QUALLEY, TIMOTHY OLYPHANT, AUSTIN BUTLER, DAKOTA FANNING, BRUCE DERN, AL PACINO

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Rating: 5 Stars (out of 5) Rated: R

(for language throughout, some strong graphic violence, drug use, and sexual references)

Running Time: 2 hours and 45 minutes

It's fun to watch Tarantino build his private vision of Hollywood in 1969 complete with all the images, clothing, billboards, and dialogue he's gleaned from all the films he loves from that period of time. While the story leisurely and beautifully moves along at its own pace, what becomes fascinating is how he unfolds the tale of his two main characters, fading golden boys who are confronting their own irrelevance. It makes one wonder if Tarantino himself isn't also facing that same identity crisis. Here's the storyline… It's the end of the '60s and things in Hollywood are changing faster than fading Western TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), are

able to understand. They are trying their best to make their way around an industry and town they don't recognize anymore. Rick's diminishing celebrity is forcing him to contemplate the unimaginable act of going to Rome to star in Westerns, while Cliff, who hides a violent streak under the bright Hawaiian shirts he wears, is trying to just hang on. They are surrounded by a host of successful Hollywood celebrities, from Steve McQueen to Roman Polanski, who just moved in next door with his new bride Sharron Tate (Margot Robbie), that makes their positions in the industry all the more depressing. This is an odyssey into the film industry that features a large and talented ensemble cast who fill out multiple storylines that pay tribute to the final moments of what Tarantino sees as Hollywood's golden age The pairing of DiCaprio and Pitt is a dream acting team that only Tarantino could have pulled off this well. He relishes in both the acting moments of the film and the realistic moments, giving equal weight to each actor, and maturely examines the bond the two friends have created. The film itself is spectacularly ambitious, touchingly nostalgic, engrossing, and hits you with a batch of surprises. It's definitely a Tarantino film, and a good one. My take… at almost 3 hours long, watching Once Upon a Time in Hollywood seems like watching a short film. It will suck you in and leave you wanting more.

CALM DOWN , IT'S THE MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS WITH OUR FAVORITE DIVAS, DIVOS & FRESH NEW ARTISTS! By DJ FR8-O

he world's most unpredictable awards show just threw us another curveball. Hosting this year's hottest night in music is comedian and actor Sebastian Maniscalco. Yeah, never heard of him either, but the outspoken Italian is ready to bring the laughs and the chutzpah back into the VMAs. Joining him will be all our favorite divas, divos and fresh new artists who've been dominating our playlists over the last 12 months. This year's ceremony is going to be a battle of the pop princesses with both Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift snatching 10 nominations each. Who will take home the most Moon Persons is yet to be seen, but here are my top picks.

BEST NEW ARTIST Ava Max Billie Eilish H.E.R. Lil Nas X RosalĂa

Lizzo It may seem like Lizzo just came out of nowhere and went straight to the front of the class, but she's been schooling her fans since she was 14 years old. In an industry that puts so much pressure on image and tries to hide flaws with photoshop and camera tricks, Lizzo celebrates her curves and literally puts it all out there. Her confidence is only overshadowed by her talent, with a stream of hits and sold-out shows over the past year.

BEST COLLABORATION

BTS (featuring Halsey): "Boy with Luv" Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)" Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello: "SeĂąorita" Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber: "I Don't Care" Taylor Swift (featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco): "Me!" Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper: "Shallow" As if she wasn't jaw-droppingly gifted all on her own, no one has ever brought the on-screen chemistry as Gaga and Cooper did in the bigscreen blockbuster A Star is Born. The heat was so intense that it raised suspicions of the two being more than just co-stars. While those rumors have since been squashed, I still get a few raised hairs every time I hear their duet from the diva's Oscar-winning film. 16 WIREMAG.COM #17 2019

BEST R&B

Childish Gambino: "Feels Like Summer" H.E.R. (featuring Bryson Tiller): "Could've Been" Alicia Keys: "Raise a Man" Normani (featuring 6lack): "Waves" Anderson .Paak (featuring Smokey Robinson): "Make It Better" Ella Mai: "Trip" After a 13 year absence from the show, the R&B category is back! Maybe it's because of the genre's resurgence into mainstream music; but whatever the reason, it's opening doors to a whole new pool of talent that may otherwise be overlooked, like this incredibly gifted and well-deserved artist.

BEST LATIN

Anuel AA and Karol G: "Secreto" Benny Blanco, Tainy, Selena Gomez and J Balvin: "I Can't Get Enough" Daddy Yankee (featuring Snow): "Con Calma" Maluma: "Mala Mía" Rosalía and J Balvin (featuring El Guincho): "Con Altura"

BEST POP

5 Seconds of Summer: "Easier" Cardi B and Bruno Mars: "Please Me" Billie Eilish: "Bad Guy" Ariana Grande: "Thank U, Next" Khalid: "Talk" Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" Jonas Brothers: "Sucker" Everyone has their opinion of what makes a great pop song, or in this case a great pop video, but I'm sure you would agree that Nick soaking in a claw foot tub and Joe tied up in his underwear would be somewhere at the top of the list. Not only does this earworm bury deep into your brain with its throwback vibe and razor-sharp hook, but watching these guys all grown up and having more fun than ever makes this clip as timeless as the track. Did I mention the bathtub?

BEST HIP HOP

21 Savage (featuring J. Cole): "A Lot" Cardi B: "Money" DJ Khaled (featuring Nipsey Hussle and John Legend): "Higher" Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)" Travis Scott (featuring Drake): "Sicko Mode" 2 Chainz (featuring Ariana Grande): "Rule the World" Is there nothing that Ari can't do? It's hard to tell who the actual guest artist is on this track, but are we really surprised? Even during her early days on "Bang Bang," she managed to hold her own with two powerhouse divas. Now it looks like she's the one bringing the noise.

Bad Bunny (featuring Drake): "Mia" Watching this video reminded me of growing up in Miami, and showing up at the impromptu house party that someone hosted while their parents were away. Of course, Drake never showed up to any of them, but of all the nominees, this one captures what everyday Latin life is really about, minus all the half-naked women.

BEST DANCE

The Chainsmokers (featuring Bebe Rexha): "Call You Mine" Clean Bandit (featuring Demi Lovato): "Solo" DJ Snake (featuring Selena Gomez, Ozuna and Cardi B): "Taki Taki" David Guetta, Bebe Rexha and J Balvin: "Say My Name" Marshmello and Bastille: "Happier" Silk City and Dua Lipa: "Electricity" Music trends will come and go, but classic house will never go out of style. These guys took the essence of "Show Me Love" and "Finally" and weaved it into a track that's as fresh as it is nostalgic. Throw in Lipa's sultry vocals weaving a hypnotic melody and you've got yourself a dance anthem that no one can resist.

VIDEO FOR GOOD

Jamie N Commons and Skylar Grey (featuring Gallant): "Runaway Train" Halsey: "Nightmare" The Killers: "Land of the Free" John Legend: "Preach" Lil Dicky: "Earth" Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" It can't be a coincidence that this category debuted the same year as this track. In a time when LGBTQ lives are being attacked – physically and politically – on the daily, it's refreshing and inspiring to see an artist take a stand and put her influence where her mouth is. Not only is the track brilliantly written, but I haven't seen that many LGBTQ icons together since the Tony Awards. #17 2019 WIREMAG.COM 17

BEST DIRECTION

Billie Eilish: "Bad Guy" (Director: Dave Meyers) FKA Twigs: "Cellophane" (Director: Andrew Thomas Huang) Ariana Grande: "Thank U, Next" (Director: Hannah Lux Davis) Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)" (Director: Calmatic) LSD: "No New Friends" (Director: Dano Cerny) Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" (Director: Taylor Swift and Drew Kirsch) Okay, I know what you're thinking, "this queen must be a huge T-Swift fan, so he's voting for her in every category." Quite the contrary, actually. I've always been pretty lukewarm when it comes to the countryturned-pop singer, but any director that could wrangle that many divas in one video shoot and not end up on the nightly news deserves a trophy.

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

DJ Khaled (featuring SZA): "Just Us" (Visual Effects: GloriaFX, Sergii Mashevskyi and Anatolli Kuzmytskyi) Billie Eilish: "When the Party's Over" (Visual Effects: Ryan Ross and Andres Jaramillo) FKA Twigs: "Cellophane" (Visual Effects: Analog) Ariana Grande: "God Is a Woman" (Visual Effects: Fabrice Lagayette at Mathematic) LSD: "No New Friends" (Visual Effects: Ethan Chancer) Photo by Lauren Dunn. Provided by Atlantic Records

Taylor Swift (featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco): "Me!" (Visual Effects: Loris Paillier and Lucas Salton for BUF VFX) I'd hand over the award for this vid just for the visual of a smoldering Brendon Urie alone, but if you've seen the clip you know the allure is more than just his pretty face. Reminiscent of a modern Moulin Rouge, the screen oozes with splashes of color, action and special effects galore, from start to finish.

BEST ART DIRECTION

BTS (featuring Halsey): "Boy with Luv" (Art Directors: JinSil Park and BoNa Kim (MU:E) Ariana Grande: "7 Rings" (Art Director: John Richoux) Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)" (Art Director: Christian Zollenkopf for Prettybird) Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" (Art Director: Brittany Porter) Kanye West and Lil Pump (featuring Adele Givens): "I Love It" (Art Director: Tino Schaedler)

18 WIREMAG.COM #17 2019

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello: "Señorita" (Art Director: Tatiana Van Sauter) In a world where videos are trying to be bigger, brighter and bolder than the last, it takes a good eye to keep things in the background simple and let the singers take the spotlight. Subtlety is an art in itself, especially when it's meant to help a love story unfold before your eyes. My only note is that we need to see more of Shawn in his Calvin Klein's next time.

BEST CHOREOGRAPHY

FKA Twigs: "Cellophane" (Choreographer: Kelly Yvonne) LSD: "No New Friends" (Choreographer: Ryan Heffington) Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello: "Señorita" (Choreographer: Calvit Hodge) Rosalía and J Balvin (featuring El Guincho): "Con Altura" (Choreographer: Charm La'Donna) Solange: "Almeda" (Choreographers: Maya Taylor and Solange Knowles)

BTS (featuring Halsey): "Boy with Luv" (Choreographers: Son Sungdeuk and Quick Crew) K-pop isn't exactly on heavy rotation on my playlists, but I must give credit where credit is due. Sure, the competition shows some beautiful moves of their own, but this vid is all about color, dancing, and more dancing. Don't ask me what they're singing about, but I could tell they were having fun while singing it.

ARTIST OF THE YEAR Cardi B Billie Eilish Halsey Jonas Brothers Shawn Mendes

Ariana Grande This may seem like I'm playing faves here, but if you take a look at all the work the other nominees have put out in the last year together, they still don't add up to the number of albums, singles, videos and collaborations Ari has checked off her to-do list. While it may not have been ground-breaking, and there's no doubt this award will actually go to Billie Eillish, no one can argue that this diva has put in more blood, sweat and tears this year than any other artist in the biz.

SONG OF THE YEAR

Drake: "In My Feelings" Ariana Grande: "Thank U, Next" Jonas Brothers: "Sucker" Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper: "Shallow" Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)" Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" Yeah, I'm going there again because this is an anthem we all need to hear and remember; not just this year, but for many years to come until the tables are turned, the planets are realigned and the haters finally take their seats for good.

VIDEO OF THE YEAR

21 Savage (featuring J. Cole): "A Lot" Billie Eilish: "Bad Guy" Ariana Grande: "Thank U, Next" Jonas Brothers: "Sucker" Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)" Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" The same goes for the video! While others might have tried to battle hate with hate, Swift chose instead to take the high road, celebrate our community, shine a spotlight on some of our favorite LGBTQ icons and hold an honest mirror up at those with narrow minds. One little music video won't change the world overnight, but if it can inspire a new generation to think differently than the one before them, then that's something to get excited about. The 2019 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from the Prudential Center in Newark on August 26th at 8 p.m. ET.

Michael Bustamante and I started our dinner by enjoying a scrumptious Broccolini with Thai peanut sauce and wild rice; Crab Summer Roll with green sambal; and Lobster Stuffed Zucchini Blossoms with preserved lemon dressing – while sipping on the Old Sensei and Moon & Stars cocktails. We capped our dinner with two very yummy desserts, the Vietnamese Coffee Sundae with homemade ice cream, sweetened condensed milk, sesame-hempseed crunch, toffee, whipped cream, and house maraschino; and Miso Flan with rice tuile, banana brûlée, macadamia nuts and soft cream.
