Making Memorable Moments at MEGA CREATURES!

As the April school holidays approach, families everywhere are seeking fun-filled adventures to create unforgettable memories. In the ancient lands of the Hunter Valley, where volcanos once erupted, there are dinosaurs, giant bugs and mythical creatures waiting for young explorers to discover. Embark on a journey through time and imagination at Hunter Valley Gardens and the annual Mega Creatures and Mega Creatures Night Safari, located just a short two-hour car drive from Sydney and only forty minutes from Newcastle. Open from Saturday, 6 April until Sunday, 5 May, this Jurassic fantastical adventure includes rides, interactive fossil digs, amazing entertainment and giant animatronic animals that will amaze visitors of all ages.

Whether it’s your first time at this annual Jurassic event or you’re one of the many who come every year, there is always something new to discover. No two years are ever the same. And this year promises to be especially exciting with the internationally recognised innovator of physical and visual theatre, puppetry-based creators Erth, providing the entertainment for the first time. The little ones will love Erth’s Roving Baby Dinosaurs, who are simply adorable and have just hatched. Get up close and personal with a fantastic selection of dinosaurs that once roamed free around the world at Erth’s famous Dinosaur Zoo Show, a fantastic 30-minute performance outside the Igloo marquee. And if you’re looking for thrills at night during the Night Safari, you might come face to face with Erth’s Roving Exoskeletons - a unique jaw-dropping experience where light and movement combine to bring amazing ancient creatures back to life.

Of course, Mega Creatures would not be what it is without actual mega creatures. All the favourites are returning this year, including T-Rex, Diplodocus, Stegosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Triceratops and more, but there are also a number of new prehistoric visitors. If

you know your dinosaurs (ask your five-year-old), you might know that Wuerhosaurus and Huangyangosaurus are Stegosaurian dinosaurs whose fossils have been found in China. They’ll be joining the party this year along with the new Dilophosauru, made famous in the movie Jurassic Park, although they got it slightly wrong when they showed Dilophosauru spitting poison and having a neck frill. Look out for the distinctive crests on its skull. Rumour has it that there may even be a new T-Rex on the hunt. The young and young at heart will enjoy meeting the famous Roving Dinosaurs, Velociraptor, and T-Rex. Snap a photo before they snap you! Will you be brave enough to pat one?

Dinosaurs aren’t the only creatures roaming the gardens. There is a new Rhyothemis Fuliginosa Selys this year, which is a type of dragonfly that looks like a butterfly from East Asia. There are also new Thorn Bugs, giant ants, scorpions and snails, not to mention the ever-popular fire-breathing dragons you’ll discover in the Dragon’s Den.

“We can’t wait to see the looks on children’s faces as they experience life-size models of dinosaurs, dragons, and bugs, with an incredible interactive display to delight the young and old,” says Kim Jacobs, Marketing Manager at Hunter Valley Gardens.

"Whether you’re coming during the day or at night, this is the perfect experience for everyone during the school holidays"

“Our team work all year round to ensure that the best ideas come to fruition, designing many of the displays themselves with state-of-the-art animatronics and speciality lighting and sourcing them internationally. It’s an extraordinary team effort, and we all love our work.”

This year, the Amphitheatre has been taken over by an amazing butterfly exhibition with the butterflies painted and decorated by local

school children. Visitors can vote for their favourite, with the winners receiving a class excursion to the event plus aqua golf, putt putt and a picnic. The winners will be announced on 10th May. If you’re visiting during the day, keep your eyes peeled for the hidden dinosaur egg that’s been lost in the gardens. If you can find the egg and return it to Mumma Dinosaur in the Garden’s Entry, you can win a family pass to Snow Time in the Garden later in the year.

As the sun sets at Hunter Valley Gardens, the pre-historic creatures will come alive with lighting displays for Mega Creatures Night Safari. Beware, predators are hunting their prey around the frog ponds and paths. Hunter Valley Gardens' collection of snakes and lizards will be on display on Reptile Road, which winds its way through the magical Storybook Garden. In the Night at the Museum display, budding archaeologists can get their hands dirty discovering mythical fossils while learning some amazing facts and figures.

Hunter Valley Gardens comprises 14 hectares of immaculate gardens and manicured lawns, 6000 trees, 600,000 shrubs and over one million ground cover plants, waterfalls, statues, murals, and so much more. Autumn is a beautiful time to visit, with the Mega Creatures event, making it ideal for all the family. There are ten different zones to visit, with photo opportunities at every turn, such as giant butterfly wings, heads poking out of giant dinosaur eggs or getting close to your favourite dinosaur. A

daytime visit to the event will allow visitors to see all the gardens, but at night, for safety reasons, only eight hectares are open.

If your teenagers are done with the dinosaurs, send them over to the rides where they can speed down the 35-metre Superslide that stands 12 metres high or have some twisty, twirly fun in the Tea Cup. If they’re looking for thrills, try the Swing Chair, which flies 11 metres above the ground. Perhaps the whole family will enjoy the vintage delight of the Italian-built Venetian Carousel or the 25-metre-tall Giant Ferris Wheel

yhv 13 | MAR–APR 2024

with its spectacular panoramic views across the gardens, providing a unique opportunity to see the dinosaurs from above - sit back, relax, take a breath and enjoy the view.

If you’re hungry, there is a wide range of delicious food options available to enjoy, from pizza and souvlaki to Mexican, crepes, healthy nourish or burrito bowls, loaded spuds, corn on the cob, dumplings, kransky, kid’s spaghetti bolognese, beef and gravy rolls, and sweet potato fries. To satisfy your sweet tooth, there are churros, gelato, doughnuts, sweet crepes, and tropical sno, just to name a few.

Kim has a big tip to help visitors get the most out of this year's event.

“If there’s one thing I want people to know about this amazing event, it’s that they have to leave enough time for it. Come at the start of the sessions because you won’t want to miss out on seeing anything. The Gardens are extensive, especially in the daytime when they are all open. We had to close off some hectares at night for safety reasons, but it still takes about three hours to see and do everything.

“For the best value for money, consider a combo ticket - the price is discounted, and it’s a great way to ensure that you can really enjoy the full experience and don’t miss the shows. Check out the times for the roaming dinosaurs and plan your visit to get the best of both the day and night sessions.”

The Gardens host many regular events, such as Mega Creatures, Snow Time in the Garden, and the Christmas Lights Spectacular, becoming family traditions enjoyed annually by locals and tourists alike.

International Secrets of Exquisite CHOCOLATE Right Here in Wine Country!

For 25 years, Hunter Valley Chocolate Co. has been one of the premier destinations in the Hunter Valley, delivering the very definition of luxury, indulgence and deliciousness. And, of course, Easter is the ideal time to visit. It’s more than a chocolate shop – it’s an attraction where you can watch the master chocolatiers creating chocolate and fudge and walk away with a basketful of treats that will put the Easter Bunny to shame.

Hunter Valley Chocolate Co. has two locations. The first being the factory and showroom at Twenty-3-Twenty on Broke Road, Pokolbin and the second at Peterson House where the bubbles and chocolate form the ultimate gastronomic partnership. The showroom has recently undergone extensive renovations and now sports a light and airy interior with a large circular display counter in white, offset by the warmth of timber floors.

Owner Jo Clarke, at 84 years young has travelled the world for her inspirations. The idea for a circular display counter came to her in the original home of chocolate, South America.

“I was in Bariloche, just south of Buenos Ares in Argentina, where there are 23 chocolate shops on one street. It was here that I saw a circular counter, and the idea just never went away. When we were looking to freshen up our space, I made a rough sketch of what I wanted, and the draftsman took over from there.

“The counter replaces the old fixtures and fittings that included a three-tier cabinet that necessitated customers bending down to see the chocolates on the bottom shelf. Our new counter is much easier for customers to see our wares and for our sales staff to serve”.

The international inspiration hasn’t been limited to the renovation. Jo has introduced a variety of new packaging for some of the ranges to complement the redesigned space and was inspired by trends she saw in her travels to Europe last year – most particularly Paris, Brussels and Spain.

It was her eye for quality and innovation that began the Hunter Valley Chocolate story over 25 years ago. Jo came from western Queensland, a country girl who then spent 30 years in Sydney. She had grown tired of the city and wanted to create a small business in a country town.

“Back in 1999, there was nothing here in Pokolbin except a few cellar doors, one cheese shop and one art gallery. We visited every weekend for six weeks, looking for a property. One evening, as I was sipping my coffee, I looked down at the selection of glossy magazines on my coffee table. Every single one of them had something about chocolate on the cover, and the idea just clicked. Everyone loves chocolate, and it was an ideal product to complement the wine-growing region of the Hunter Valley.”

Jo’s son, Pete Carpenter, who began his career as a photojournalist in London, studied chocolate at Melbourne’s William Angliss Institute to become a chocolatier, and today, his daughter, Jo’s granddaughter, is learning from her father, ensuring the family legacy continues through the generations.

Despite the challenges of the past ten years, Jo is excited about the future.

“It hasn’t been easy in the valley – we’ve had fires, drought and COVID, but you know, that’s life, and I won’t be knocked over or knocked down. Our business operates mostly on word of mouth, and I’m very proud of the reputation that we’ve gained over the years.”

With a dedication to quality, the team continually strive for perfection and uses only the finest Belgian couverture chocolate in white, dark and milk, as well as a little Swiss milk base because it is creamier, together with Australian dried fruits and nuts. A distilled pure fruit oil is used for infusion and results in a subtle but authentic flavour of the fruit.

The secret to the exquisite chocolate is in the freshness and the high quality of the base and other ingredients. It’s made in five-kilogram batches and packed in-store – so nothing has to travel. Due to the small batches made almost every day, the chocolate is turned over quickly, guaranteeing its freshness.

"We use over eight tonnes of chocolate every year – five tonnes of milk chocolate, two tonnes of dark and one tonne of white."

“Dark chocolate has gained in popularity because people are becoming more health-conscious, and it also doesn’t contain dairy, which is great for vegans. The big chocolate companies extract as much as 70 per cent of the cocoa butter from the chocolate mass and replace it with animal fats. That’s what leaves a greasy taste on the roof of your mouth when you eat mass-produced, low-quality chocolate. It’s the cocoa butter that gives chocolate its smoothness and flavour and makes it melt when you hold it in your hand or as soon as you put it in your mouth.”

Both stores are fully geared up for Easter with loads of little bunnies, bilbies, eggs that are freckled or marshmallow filled, colourful chocolate eggs with all sorts of fillings, chocolate chicks hatching from eggs, hampers of every size, as well as a made to order service. Prices start from as little as $5.90 for a 100-gram bag of foil eggs or $6.90 for the marshmallow bunnies, so there’s no excuse to buy inferior supermarket chocolate.

The regular range of speciality chocolates comes in an extraordinary number of flavours and colourful concoctions, including caramel frogs, golf balls, echidnas, chilli bombs, peppermint creams, Nutella bon-bons, strawberries and cream, honey milk ganache, cherry liquors, salted caramels, and so many more. The top sellers are still peppermint thins, closely followed by Rocky Road, and if chocolate isn’t your thing (what is wrong with you?), there are over 20 different flavours of handmade fudge, Italian style gelato, candies and a café where you can sit back and ponder what your selection will be whilst sipping on your hot chocolate (or coffee of course) and nibbling on a dessert or two – why not try the chocolate fondue while you’re there?

Visit the Chocolate and Fudge Factory at 2320 Broke Rd, Pokolbin or Peterson House at 2457 Broke Road, open seven days a week from 9am to 5pm. And if you can’t make it to the valley, you can purchase online at www.hvchocolate.com.au.

Award-Winning Winery Incredible Transformation of

One of the country’s most successful entrepreneurs, the woman who brought PANDORA Jewellery to Australia, has transformed one of the Hunter Valley’s iconic and historic vineyards into one of Australia’s more unique wine tourism destinations.

And now, Karin Adcock’s efforts have been recognised by one of the industry’s most respected critics, James Halliday, when her prized winery was shortlisted for Best New Winery in the 2024 Halliday Wine Companion. Winmark Estate’s foray into the industry’s renowned Halliday “bible” came with a 5-star rating, which is rare for a winery's first listing. All four wines produced by this Chardonnay-only maker were rated in the 90s, including two outstanding 95 & 96-point scores.

Winmark Wines & Art Gallery was also recently named 2023 Hunter Valley Cellar Door of the Year at the Hunter Valley Wine Industry and Legends Awards. Winmark shone above all other 18 finalists to be presented the award sponsored by Wine Selectors, which is determined by the results of a rigorous third-party secret-shopper style reviewing process.

Danish-born Karin has created a wine lover’s haven in the spectacular Broke Fordwich subregion of the Hunter Valley. Winmark Estate offers a place where everyone can gather, from wine enthusiasts to art and nature lovers. This recognition confirms that the transformation of this 50-year-old vineyard, formerly known as Poole’s Rock is nothing short of incredible.

Having taken several years to build up vine quality, the range now consists of four incredible Chardonnays, all 100% grown on the property and made by winemaker Xanthe Hatcher under the watchful eye of international winemaker John Belsham. The wines now adorn the wine lists of many great Sydney restaurants, and as distribution continues to grow, so will the enjoyment of Chardonnay lovers worldwide.

“Winning Hunter Valley Cellar Door of the Year has raised the bar for Winmark and puts us in amongst the top echelon of wine producers in Australia,” says Karin.

“It’s such a joy to be recognised in such amazing company. We are so humbled by this recognition. It’s a tough award to win with the secret shopper appraisal style, so we are beyond excited!”

Open to visitors seven days a week, Winmark Estate offers a complete day out with an art gallery, gift store, immersive sculpture garden and walking tour, coffee cart and luxury accommodation for up to 34 guests across the guesthouses.

Part of this new venture lies in a commitment to sustainability and reverence for history. Savannah Estate embraces the ethos of environmental responsibility, which is reflected in aspects of the new Cellar Door.

“We've integrated recycled materials into the design, including the distinctive convict bricks sourced from the old Kaluda Estate in Lochinvar,” says Savannah.

“These bricks, carefully preserved by Colin for a rainy day, now find new life as part of our architectural narrative, weaving a story of resilience and heritage.

“Amidst this celebration of innovation, Savannah Estate remains rooted in its traditions. Our original Cellar Door in Mount View continues to welcome visitors, preserving the intimate charm and character that has endeared us to our patrons over the years.”

Located in a prime spot adjacent to Hunter Valley's esteemed Lisa McGuigan, Pokolbin Distillery, and Blaxland’s Inn, the team at the new Savannah Estate Cellar Door is excited to be surrounded by their respected neighbours.

Old But Far from Old-Fashioned

THE PARISH OF POKOLBIN

The Hunter Valley is a testament to nature's artistry, particularly during autumn. As the summer heat mellows into cooler days and crisper nights, the valley transforms into a kaleidoscope of warm hues, offering visitors a picturesque vista filled with wine, culinary delights, and captivating landscapes – especially in the southern part of Pokolbin known as the Parish of Pokolbin

Established (officially) in the 1880s, the ‘Parish’ is the oldest wine region in Australia – but that doesn’t mean it is old-fashioned! This area stretches from Broke Road to Oakey Creek Road and encompasses some of the Hunter Valley region’s best viticulture sites, some of the most modern architecture in Wine Country and a litany of new varieties alongside old favourites.

Unsurprisingly, it’s also home to many of the area’s most popular places to wine, dine, shop, stay and play – and back in 2010, several such destinations came together to form the Parish of Pokolbin group and build on the area’s solid foundation of history, heritage, and unique character.

Although much of the Hunter Valley region is labelled ‘Pokolbin’, the Parish of Pokolbin is a distinct area lying at the foothills of the Brokenback Range in the southern part of the Valley. As a result, the area includes the names of some of the early pioneering families who continue to leave their mark on the wine industry.

The ideal viticultural conditions of the Parish produce some of the most highly regarded examples of the acclaimed Hunter Valley wine styles of Shiraz, Semillon, Verdelho and Chardonnay, but you’ll also

find varieties not commonly seen in the region like Tempranillo, Fiano, Grenache, Vermentino and Nebbiolo promising an authentic and unique curated wine experience for both the novice and expert wine enthusiast.

The Parish is also home to an abundance of eating opportunities, from fine dining to organic, casual and everything in between. Hatted establishments sit alongside cafes and casual fare to create a true foodie destination committed to showcasing the region's produce.

Explore the history of Australia’s oldest wine region this autumn and experience the gourmet delights of the valley against the backdrop of some of the Hunter’s most stunning vistas.

Signature Wines Standing out from the Crowd

WORDS QUENTIN VON ESSEN

The Hunter Valley, considered one of Australia's longest-established wine regions, is renowned for producing some of the world's best and most distinctive styles of Semillon and Shiraz, which are the hallmarks of this region.

Perhaps the most recognisable of these is Hunter Valley Semillon –the Hunter Valley’s flagship variety and a truly outstanding wine in terms of quality and taste with a style that has not been replicated anywhere else in the world.

Other varieties grown include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Verdelho, which all produce great Hunter wines.

The region is also home to a talented list of winemakers who have adopted some alternative varieties that include Grenache, Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Durif, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Tannat, Petit Verdot and Chambourcin amongst the reds and Vermentino, Sauvignon, Fiano, Pinot Grigio and Viognier amongst the whites – and with fantastic results.

Of the more than 150 cellar doors making up the various Hunter Valley wine trails, you would be hard-pressed to find one that did not include a Semillon or Shiraz amongst their flagship or most awarded wines.

The term ’Signature’ or ‘Flagship’ wine does not have a specific definition within the wine industry, so there are no hard and fast rules dictating how a winery chooses its flagship wine or even if they have one.

What is common to all flagship wines is that they are all wines of exceptional quality, are good examples of the style, and embody the grape variety and region in which it was grown.

If a winery does have a flagship wine, it could be based on their most awarded wine, a winemaker’s favourite wine that he or she produced, a wine that is only produced in the most exceptional vintages, or one that the winemaker believes best represents the style that he or she is trying to achieve.

This principle also applies to wine-growing regions worldwide, with some wine regions receiving global recognition for producing excellent wines amongst certain varieties.

Just like Shiraz in Australia, countries around the world have their own flagship wine varieties and styles. These wines make up a part of each country’s unique wine identity. It’s Chenin Blanc and the unique red variety Pinotage for South Africa. In Argentina, it’s Malbec; for Chile, it’s Cabernet Sauvignon and in Italy (particularly Tuscany), it’s Sangiovese. For the major Spanish wine regions, it’s Tempranillo and in the Rias Baixas region, it's Albarino. In California (USA), it's Zinfandel, which also happens to be home to some of the oldest Zinfandel wines in the world. Bordeaux is France's most famous wine region and the reference point for Cabernet Sauvignon.

Closer to home, the flagship variety for the Swan Valley is Verdelho, and South Australia’s Clare Valley is better known for its Riesling. In the Yarra Valley and the Tamar Valley in Tasmania, the flagship varieties are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

These flagship varieties serve to attract consumers to a wine region or a particular winery and to experience all the other varieties and everything else on offer in the area – wines that are of exceptional quality, that are emblematic of the region, terroir, winemaker, and grape.
