What makes Disney On Ice such a treasured experience isn’t just the storytelling—it’s the way these tales are told. With mind-blowing world-class figure skating, high-flying aerial acrobatics, unexpected stunts, intricate set designs, elaborate costumes and cutting-edge visual effects, Find Your Hero is both a theatrical and athletic marvel. With some of the most advanced ice-skating technology ever seen, the enchantment and thrills are dialled up to breathtaking levels that will have audiences gasping in awe and instantly transported to each magical world as the journey unfolds. Every moment of this immersive experience is designed to wow the audience.
Featuring a cast and crew of approximately 100 individuals, this ensemble includes over 50 professional skaters, many of whom are former Olympians (the youngest performer is 19 and the oldest is 55!) as well as technical crew members, costume designers, and support staff. The team tours extensively, bringing the magic of Disney to audiences worldwide. The dedication, athleticism and sheer talent are awe-inspiring, with cast members performing stunts at speeds that exceed 32 kilometres per hour, often executing up to 300 rotations per minute and sometimes having as little as 30 seconds to switch elaborate, often heavy costumes between scenes.
Feld Entertainment’s Disney On Ice has captivated audiences since 1981, when it debuted as Walt Disney’s World on Ice. Over
four decades later, the franchise has performed in more than 545 cities across 68 countries and 41 languages, entertaining an estimated 320 million guests. Each year, performers travel over 2.25 million kilometres, bringing Disney magic to life on the road.
The company remains the largest employer of professional ice skaters globally, with over 400 athletes on contract at any given time, many of whom are former Olympians. Skaters must undergo rigorous training—more than 550 hours of rehearsals—to be show-ready, and the selection process is highly competitive. Auditions are held globally, and skaters are encouraged to submit tapes via the Feld Entertainment website.
Beyond technical skill, it takes a special kind of passion and perseverance to thrive in this fast-paced environment.
Among the international cast bringing this production to life are Ida Sjölin from Sweden and Quentin Lourenco-Aubry of France— seasoned performers who not only share
the ice and a passion for skating, but also a romantic connection. Fittingly, the real-life couple portrays Rapunzel and Flynn Rider in the Tangled sequence, bringing an added layer of chemistry to their performance.
Ida first dreamed of performing in Disney On Ice after watching a show as a five-year-old.
“I told my mom that’s what I wanted to do when I grew up,” she recalls.
“So, she enrolled me in skating training the following year, when I was six."
"All I ever wanted was to be a Disney Princess, and now I can live my dream. Dreams really do come true!”
Her dream became reality in 2017 when she auditioned in Örebro, Sweden, in her final year of high school and joined Feld Entertainment. She never considered any other career and included musical theatre training in her education. Since then, she has travelled the world with Disney On Ice, bringing smiles and joy to audiences in over two dozen countries.
“I love to portray a character, especially when you get to make a kid’s day by interacting with them,” says Ida.
“My favourite memory is performing my dream role as Rapunzel for the first time in Sweden in front of my coach and family. It was the most special moment – fulfilling a lifelong ambition.”
A multi-talented artist, Ida also enjoys singing, painting, reading fantasy (“anything
with a touch of magic”) and fire acrobatics. She has big plans for her own entertainment production company, VIS Productions, once her skating career winds down. For now, though, she’s enjoying every moment on the ice with no plans to slow down.
“The best thing about touring is all the places you get to see,” she says.
“The worst is missing family gatherings like Christmas and birthdays. We rely a lot on FaceTime, but the friendships and memories you make on the road are worth it. We support each other – it’s another family.”
Joining her on tour is Quentin Lourenco-Aubry from Bordeaux, France, who began skating as a child and rose to win the French National Championships in the first division at just 14. A long-time member of Disney On Ice, he joined Feld Entertainment in 2012 after auditioning in Toulouse.
“Performing makes families happy—and that’s everything,” says Quentin, for whom family is important and who counts his grandfather’s watch as his most prized possession. He also lists Brazilian jiu-jitsu among his talents and considers himself a pretty good cook.
“Our teacher took us to an ice rink, and the local skating coach saw me on the ice. I’d never skated before, but he saw something in me, took me on as part of the ice-skating team, and I went on to compete at a national level.
Both performers agree that life on the road has taught them resilience and adaptability. Maintaining their athleticism is a key component to their success, as is their drive to grow their skills on the ice.
“It’s tough work physically,” said Ida.
Quentin’s path to Disney On Ice was more circuitous than Ida’s.
“I discovered a natural talent for skating when I was seven years old on a school excursion,” said Quentin.
“When I turned 18, my local ice rink closed down, which meant that to continue in the sport, I would have needed to move to Paris, which I couldn’t afford to do. I started looking around for other options and had no idea that this was even an opportunity. I saw a Disney on Ice show with a friend and sent in a video straight away, and a few months later I was working on Disney On Ice.”
“It’s demanding and we make sure we eat right, work out, stretch our bodies, warm up and listen to our Athletics Coach who travels with us. Avoiding injury is paramount.”
“And we’re always keen for ‘ice-time’,” adds Quentin.
“As principals, we are allowed to warm up on the ice before the show starts. Often, we get ‘ice-time’ in the mornings before an evening show or after a show has finished for the night. They call it ‘open-ice’, which is a free-forall – everyone gets out on the ice to practice their skills and tricks, to train and take on new challenges. We learn from each other and support each other. And no, we never get sick of being on the ice. We love it.
“We usually begin as a single ensemble skater when we start out. In my case, I started in the ensemble, then became Andy from Toy Story 3. Learning to skate in pairs is a whole different skill set and takes a lot of trust to get in-sync with each other There is always something more to learn, new challenges to take on, new tricks to master – lifts, acrobatics and aerials – every year we try to add more to our repertoire.”
Life on the road includes taking advantage of a crate full of books (the ‘library’), board games and puzzles which the cast and crew share. Ida and Quentin often watch the Disney
films for inspiration to give more of that magic to the children in the audience. The couple are looking forward to their first visit to Australia, although Ida voices concerns over the spiders she may encounter! One thing is certain: both performers believe in the power of Disney magic and relish bringing that joy to audiences all around the world. And for those who have ambitions to perform on the ice, they have plenty of advice.
“My advice to kids who want to be performers?” Ida says.
“Work on being quick on your feet—the show world is fast. Acting skills help, too, so maybe take an acting class. And always be kind and motivated. Follow your dreams, work hard and believe in yourself.”
Quentin agrees, adding, “It’s true what they say, if you do what you love, you never have to work a day in your life. I want to be doing this for a long time to come. Whilst some skaters get injured and have to retire, others keep going into their 60s!”
For many Novocastrians, Disney On Ice has become more than an annual event—it’s a cherished family tradition that bridges the generations with the power to bring a nostalgic joy to the oldies and magical wonder to the little ones.
“It’s such a magical, multi-generational experience,” says a local mother of three who’s attended the show every year since her eldest was a toddler.
“My kids are mesmerised every time, and I always get a bit teary during the songs. It’s nostalgic for the adults, thrilling for the kids, and just such a joyful thing to share.”
Indeed, this year’s production promises plenty of those goosebumpinducing moments that have made Disney On Ice a family favourite for decades. Whether it’s the spectacular skating, heartfelt performances, or iconic soundtracks, Find Your Hero invites every audience member to step into a world of courage and wonder—and maybe even discover a little hero within themselves.

Newcastle-trained dancer Morgan Hurrell features in momenta, Sydney Dance Company’s hit production coming to the Civic Theatre for one show only on Wednesday, 6 August.
Originally from Mudgee, Morgan has been dancing since the age of two. After accepting an offer to attend Newcastle’s National Dance College, she completed her Diploma of Dance and moved to Sydney, where she was offered
a contract with Sydney Dance Company at the end of 2021.
Momenta exploded onto stages last year and received some of the best reviews in the company’s history. Choreographed by Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela, momenta takes audiences on a journey into the poetry and physicality of human bonds. The mesmerising contemporary dance work is a kaleidoscope of energy. The dancers transcend physical
limitations, exploring the full range of their bodies with grace, power and vulnerability.
“Before I start to create the dance, I create a visual mind map that allows me to build an intuitive framework around the main idea,” says Rafael.
“Momenta is the plural of momentum, originating from the Latin word, which means movement or motion. The development started exploring the concepts of momentum, force, movement, time and space.”
Working with collaborators Composer Nick Wales, Lighting Designer Damien Cooper and Set & Costume Designer Elizabeth Gadsby, Rafael goes on to describe the process of creating the show: “We imagine what momenta will sound like, feel like and look like. What is the world that the dancers will inhabit and be part of? For me personally, collaboration is a way of staying connected to an ongoing source of inspiration. I am thrilled I had the opportunity to put together a dream team to bring momenta to life.”
Momenta is described by The Sydney Morning Herald as “…an electric and arresting celebration of light and life…” and a “75-minute whirlwind of power, grace and physicality” by the Fjord Review.

chord. Through Crawford's eyes – a woman systematically erased from royal history despite her pivotal role in shaping our future Queen –the play poses urgent questions about whose stories matter and why certain voices are deliberately silenced.
Director Priscilla Jackman deliberately strips away royal pageantry, focusing instead on raw human emotion and power dynamics. The result promises to be a provocative evening that challenges audiences to reconsider the carefully constructed narratives surrounding the monarchy.
A forgotten royal scandal takes centre stage this month when Melanie Tait's compelling comedy drama The Queen's Nanny arrives at Performance Arts Culture Cessnock (PACC) on Thursday, 26 June.
From the brilliant minds behind the sell-out hit The Appleton Ladies' Potato Race, this bold new production resurrects the extraordinary true story of Marion 'Crawfie' Crawford – the devoted Scottish governess who raised Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, only to face royal exile after daring to publish her memoirs.
Crawford's crime? Offering the British public its first intimate glimpse behind palace doors through her tell-all book. Tait's razor-sharp script imagines the explosive private confrontations between Crawfie and the formidable Queen Mother, delivering a theatrical experience that's both darkly humorous and politically charged.
The timing couldn't be more perfect. As Australia continues to wrestle with its colonial legacy following the Voice referendum, The Queen's Nanny strikes a particularly resonant
Thu 26 June 7:30pm
This isn't just another royal drama – it's a fierce reclamation of a woman's voice, exploring themes of class, loyalty, and betrayal that remain strikingly relevant today. In an era where institutional secrecy continues to clash with public transparency, Crawford's story serves as a powerful reminder of what happens when ordinary people dare to speak truth to power.
For Newcastle audiences seeking intelligent, thought-provoking theatre that entertains while it challenges, The Queen's Nanny promises an unforgettable night out. Tickets are available through the PACC Box Office on (02) 4993 4266 or online at www.mypacc.com.au.

This June long weekend, Morpeth Gallery will come alive with the vibrant colours of Australia’s native wildlife as part of a special exhibition to celebrate World Environment Day
From Saturday, 7 June to Monday, 9 June, visitors can watch awardwinning wildlife artist Natalie Jane Parker paint at her easel and view her stunning depiction of a male Satin Bowerbird in his bower, inspired by a real-life bird on a property at nearby Brandy Hill.
The shy yet spectacular Satin Bowerbird is found throughout the Hunter Valley. Males build elaborate bowers on the ground, meticulously decorated with blue objects they collect, and the structure serves as a stage for elaborate courtship displays. The birds are notorious for their competitiveness, often stealing from rival bowers or sabotaging them altogether, but the builder tirelessly reconstructs his bower each time.
Entry to the gallery is free, and the exhibition will also feature several of Australia’s top wildlife artists, offering a rare opportunity to see the skill and passion behind their internationally renowned works. The Hunter Valley Finch Club will also return with their dazzling display of finches on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
Whether you’re an art lover, nature enthusiast, or simply looking for a unique way to spend the long weekend, Feathers and Fur has something to inspire everyone. You’ll find Morpeth Gallery at 5 Green Street, Morpeth. For more info, visit www.morpethgallery.com.au.
The Place-Based Abilities program, commencing in late 2024, is reaching its first full year of operation. Over the past year, this capacity-building program, a collaboration between The Place: Charlestown Community Centre and ReadyUpSkills, has offered an array of activities providing joy, skill-building and empowerment to both 10 to 16-year-olds and 17 to 25-year-olds age groups. Those who’ve joined us have been diligently working on a few group projects and events.
Our project focus thus far is the development of an Accessibility Audit App, which is informed by the participants every step of the way. From discussing what accessibility means to them with occupational therapist Grey from hbRehab, to devising how the app would function with IT expert Tristan from Myrtec, to working together in teams to build the landing page’s identity with icons, colours and logos – the project has brought countless inputs and perspectives to the forefront.
Voice and agency doesn’t stop there. Participants in the program have planned accessible community events that are open to the greater public, with the goal of bridging the greater community together. With a Halloween disco held in 2024, a trivia-cosplay hybrid event held in early 2025, and now an upcoming Paint + Pizza event coming in June, participant voice is crucial to shape the events, from conception to execution. Once the event rolls around, group members see their vision and ideas come to life.
From week to week, the program offers a wide range of activities to meet the group's diverse interests. Each weekly session is jam-packed with fun things to do, ranging from hands-on art like clay models and canvas painting, to teambuilding challenges like tower building, to classic board games. There’s something for everyone in the program.
“I love the craft!” and “my favourite part of this place is making friends,” exclaimed one of our members.
“If I wasn’t here, I’d be so bored at home,” another noted.
With limited spots available in both age groups, and the program entirely free (no NDIS funding required), we encourage anyone interested to reach out to (02) 4032 5500 or to email youthprograms1@theplacecharlestown. org.au to register their interest. Make sure to register for this term's Paint + Pizza event.
“I love making the app,” one member noted. “[This program] gives us a voice.”
Hunter Drama is proud to present Disney’s Civic Theatre Newcastle, from 17 July to 2 August stage adaptation of the beloved animated film, brought to life by some of the region’s most talented young performers.
Directed by Luke Baker, with support from Assistant Director Abbey Fotheringham, and featuring musical direction by Rachel Davies and choreography by Vanessa Ambrose, this enchanting production celebrates love in all its forms, the strength of sisterhood, and the magic of self-discovery—continuing the Disney legacy of telling powerful, character-driven stories for modern audiences.
More than just a fairytale, Disney’s Frozen JR. in Disney storytelling, shifting the focus away from traditional princess narratives. The story of Disney’s Frozen JR. follows fearless Princess Anna as she sets off on a journey to find her estranged sister Elsa, whose icy powers have accidentally trapped their kingdom in eternal winter. Packed with all the hit songs you know and love, such as Snowman? and more, the production promises a dazzling experience for audiences, young and old.

Skip the M1, park in front, and take off for your next adventure. Newcastle Airport announces two game-changing routes within a week –direct flights to Perth and Bali.
For years, the conversation has been the same. Whether you're a FIFO worker heading to the mines, a business traveler navigating endless connections, or someone dreaming of a Balinese getaway, getting anywhere from Newcastle has meant one thing: a trek to Sydney, queues, delays, and the dreaded M1 marathon.
Not anymore.
In a week that marked a transformational moment for regional aviation, Newcastle Airport delivered a double announcement that changes everything. From 8 September, Qantas will fly direct to Perth three times a week, while from 21 October 2025, Jetstar will operate Newcastle's first year-round international route with direct flights to Bali.
The Perth route represents the flight connection Newcastle has been waiting for. Operating on Fridays, Sundays, and Mondays, the five-hour journey eliminates the stopover in Sydney that has frustrated travellers for decades.
The demand has been overwhelming. Perth is the fifth most-travelled-to destination for people in the Newcastle Airport catchment. When the airport surveyed the community last year, more than 5,000 people responded in a single day, with 97% stating they would likely travel to Perth if direct flights were available.
The route will carry 900 passengers a week and 47,000 passengers annually on a 150-seat Airbus A319, injecting an estimated $21.7 million into the local economy each year and creating 74 jobs.
The Bali announcement brings even greater significance – it's Newcastle Airport's inaugural international service from the new terminal and will be operated by Jetstar, the airline that launched its very first commercial service from Newcastle in 2004.
Newcastle Airport CEO Linc Horton said launching an ongoing international service with Jetstar was a historic moment for the region.
"Jetstar has been part of Newcastle Airport's story from the very beginning, and it's only fitting that they're the airline to take us into our international future," Mr Horton said.
Operating three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, the Bali route will carry more than 70,000 passengers annually with a flight time of just under six hours. The service departs from Newcastle at 9:30am, arriving in Denpasar at 1:05pm, with return flights departing Bali at 10:20pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Both routes represent more than new destinations on the departures board – they're validation of Newcastle Airport's growth strategy and the region's economic importance. The Perth route connects Newcastle directly with WA's resources sector, creating enormous
potential for FIFO operations, while the Bali service eliminates the Sydney detour for Australia's most popular international holiday destination.
"We've worked hard to secure these routes because they're what our community and extended region needs," Mr Horton said.
"The five-hour Perth service saves travellers a lengthy drive to Sydney and connects Newcastle directly with WA's resources sector. Meanwhile, our new international connection to Bali is just the beginning, opening doors to even greater opportunities for the region."
The economic impact extends beyond passenger numbers. The Perth route unlocks international one-stop connections via Perth to cities such as London, Paris, Johannesburg and Rome, making Newcastle a genuine gateway to global destinations.
Neither route materialised by chance. The NSW Government's Aviation Activation Fund helped secure both services, with Jobs and Tourism Minister Steve Kamper describing the Perth route as "the last piece in the domestic puzzle" and the Bali service as "the start of a new era of growth for Newcastle and the Hunter region."
"The Minns Labor Government is proud to have worked with Newcastle Airport and airlines to secure these routes," Minister Kamper said.
"Not only will this strategic investment boost Newcastle Airport's capacity, but it will also open the Hunter and the Mid-North Coast to major transport hubs and a wealth of opportunity."
The announcements come at a transformational time for the Williamtown precinct, with the new international terminal due for completion in August 2025 as part of Newcastle Airport's ambitious $250 million expansion project.
Newcastle Airport Chair Jude Munro AO said international connectivity was a big step towards giving Newcastle an airport that matches its global outlook.
"Newcastle Airport will continue to secure new domestic and international routes for the region and grow as a significant gateway for international travel in NSW."
The flights Newcastle has been waiting for aren't just about reaching Perth or Bali - they're about what becomes possible when you can finally skip the M1 and fly anywhere - the Newy way.
Sign up for the Newcastle Airport e-Newsletter at www.newcastleairport.com.au and be the first to know new routes as they’re announced.

What it does deliver is pure wintery magic that truly delights all ages.
A traditional family pass, which includes two adults and two children, is just $126 and includes all snow activities, entry to the Gardens, roving entertainment, and the new Abominable Adventure activity for the kids. This fun new activity encourages little ones to explore the gardens in a scavenger hunt, using their adventure map to guide them through the enchanting winter wonderland. They collect stamps at each checkpoint, with the goal of freeing the Frozen Yeti from his icy chamber at the end.
A wonderful way to experience snow for the first time and to hone your snow sports skills, Hunter Valley Gardens utilises state-ofthe-art snow and ice-making equipment to ensure the best possible conditions every day. There are two ice rinks, with one dedicated to juniors under the age of 6, providing a safe environment in which to enjoy their first taste of the ice. You can hire a Bobby Seal to help them get their ice legs at just $6.
Adults must accompany all children under the age of five on the ice. The main ice rink can accommodate up to 200 skaters at a time,
and this year it will operate on a first-come, first-served basis. The hot tip is to pick up your free skating session passes from 9.30am at the skating ticket booth near the top of the waterfall. Your ticket includes the hire of skates and a helmet. Skating sessions run for 20 minutes, starting at 10am. Arrive 15 minutes before to organise your skates.
Perhaps the super-fast and crazy fun Giant Ice Toboggan is more your style. Grab a tube and glide down the 45-metre ice slide; it’s sure to get your adrenaline pumping, but be warned – once won’t be enough! This is a firm family favourite that will have everyone gasping with excitement and laughter all at once. Children under the age of four must be accompanied by an adult.
Building a snowman or making snow angels are magical memories in the making. The Snow Play Zone is filled with freshly pumped man-made snow every day to ensure you get the most authentic snow experience possible. It's a very good idea to wear weatherproof and waterproof clothing, including gloves, jackets, pants, and shoes, especially for smaller children who will be sitting in the Snow Play Zone. It's also advisable to bring along an extra set of clothing and a towel.
All this play is bound to make everyone hungry for yummy warm food to go with the wintery vibe, and the Gardens don’t disappoint. Replenish your energy with a selection of hearty food and warming beverages to choose from, including Woodfired Pizza, Nachos, loaded potatoes, Gozleme, hot dogs, burgers and loaded fries. If you crave a sweet treat, you
can grab waffles, fruit cups, fairy floss, or risk a brain freeze with the delicious slushies.
Adding to the carnival atmosphere is the roving entertainment that this year includes Little Scallywagz and The Pretty Amazing Jono between 10am and 2pm, and of course, everyone’s favourite fun thing to do – the amusement rides. Experience a bird’s eye view on the 25 metre Ferris Wheel that overlooks the snow-filled activities, create magic moments on the traditional Venetian Carousel, or take a thrilling spin on the Swing Chairs or the Teacups. Tickets for the rides can be purchased at the ticket booths for $6 per ride or $30 for a book of six.
In addition to Snow Time, amusement rides and delicious food options, there are also 14 hectares of gardens with ten individually themed gardens to explore. Hunter Valley Gardens Aqua Golf and Putt Putt is located just outside the Gardens, and the Hunter Valley Gardens Shopping Village is full of bespoke shops offering everything from collectables, jewellery, glassware, clothing, deli and gourmet foods to crystals and Christmas decorations. If you’re coming from out of town, explore the accommodation packages on the website offered by the Mercure Hunter Valley Gardens and Harrigan’s Hunter Valley. Both are perfect for families, offering comfort, convenience and easy access to all the frosty fun! Stay close to the action, enjoy warm meals and cosy rooms, and make the most of your winter adventure in the heart of Hunter Valley Wine Country. Packages start at $379 midweek for a family of four at the Mercure or $309 midweek for a family of 3 at Harrigans.
If this is your first time heading to Snow Time in the Garden, we’ve compiled a few tips to make sure your frosty day out is as smooth as an ice-skating spin:
1. Arrive early.
Snow Time activities open at 9:30am, but the gates open at 9am — arriving early helps you beat the queues, make the most of your time on the ice, and grab a great parking spot.
2. Dress for winter fun.
It may not be Perisher, but you'll still want to rug up. Waterproof gloves and sturdy shoes (ideally waterproof) are essential, especially for kids who will spend most of their time diving into snow piles or tobogganing repeatedly. Layer up — you can always peel them off once you’ve warmed up.
3. Bring a change of clothes for little ones.
Between snow play, ice skating and inevitable tumbles, kids are bound to get soggy. A dry change of clothes and even spare socks can make a big difference by mid-afternoon.
4. Plan your must-dos.
The Ice Toboggan, Snow Play Zone and Skating Rink are all included in your entry ticket — and they’re often the most popular! Hit these first before the midday rush, then enjoy the rides, food and gardens at a more relaxed pace.
5. Consider the bonus pack.
Ride tickets aren’t included in general entry, so if your crew is keen to jump on the Ferris Wheel, Carousel or Swing Chairs, grab a Bonus Pack at the ride ticket booth to save a few dollars.
6. Don’t miss the new adventure!
New this year is the Abominable Adventure — a garden-wide scavenger hunt that’s great fun for kids and gets the whole family exploring the grounds. Pick up a map on entry and collect stamps as you go.
7. Stay for lunch.
There’s a wide selection of hearty, hot food stalls on-site — from woodfired pizzas and loaded fries to sweet treats like waffles and fairy floss. It’s all part of the experience (and a great excuse to treat yourself after braving the ice).
8. Book your tickets online.
To avoid disappointment (especially during peak school holiday days), pre-purchase your tickets via the Hunter Valley Gardens website. You'll skip the ticket queue and head straight to the fun.
Snow Time in the Garden will be open every day from 9am – 5pm from Saturday, 28 June to Sunday, 27 July. The last entry for Snow Time only is 3pm. General Garden entry is permitted until 4pm. For more info or to purchase tickets, visit www.huntervalleygardens.com.au.

And for the first time ever, the festivities will kick off the night before with a very special guest: Miguel Maestre.
This marks the 13th year of what has become one of the Hunter Valley's most anticipated annual events, drawing food and wine enthusiasts from across New South Wales and beyond. The festival has grown significantly since its humble beginnings to become a regional celebration that perfectly captures the essence of what makes the Hunter Valley so special: exceptional produce, passionate winemakers, distillers, and brewers, as well as genuine hospitality.
This year's festival weekend launches in style with an exclusive Friday night dinner on Friday, 11 July, hosted by celebrity chef, restaurateur, and TV favourite Miguel Maestre. Known for his passion, humour, and incredible flavour combinations, Miguel will lead an intimate evening of storytelling, shared plates, and Hunter Valley hospitality. The charismatic chef, who has become a household name through his television appearances and cookbook successes, brings his infectious enthusiasm and culinary expertise to create what promises to be an unforgettable evening.
The three-course feast, crafted by leading local chefs, including Matthew Dillow (Gartelmann Wines) and Ashleigh Hedger (The

Each chef brings their unique perspective and expertise to showcase local ingredients at their peak. A generous fourhour beverage package will keep glasses full and spirits high, ensuring the evening flows as smoothly as the region's famous Semillon.
On Saturday, 12 July, festivalgoers can sip and savour their way through tastings from iconic Hunter wineries like Pepper Tree, Allandale, and Leogate Estate, plus boutique favourites including Gundog, Gartelmann, and Elbourne Wines. Craft beer enthusiasts can explore frothy offerings from Sydney Brewery, Zymurgy Brewing, and more, reflecting the growing craft beer movement that has found a natural home alongside the valley's rich wine heritage. Spirit lovers won't miss out either, with Phoenix Distilling Co. and Pants Off Distillery shaking things up with their artisanal gins, vodkas, and unique Australian spirits.
New this year, Miguel returns to the spotlight on Saturday to present a must-see masterclass pairing mouth-watering bites with his brandnew Rubia Pale Ale—a bold, refreshing brew that's sure to turn heads. This exciting addition to Miguel's repertoire showcases his versatility beyond the kitchen, demonstrating how the boundaries between food and beverage continue to blur in exciting ways. From food and beer matching to guided wine tastings, the Masterclass Stage will be buzzing with flavour and flair all day, offering educational experiences that cater to both novices and connoisseurs.
With live music from Kuta Groove Duo in the afternoon followed by Fifth Whiskey Band, acoustic melodies provide the ideal backdrop for afternoon tastings. The festival remains
familyfriendly, with free entry for children under 18 accompanied by an adult. A Kids Activity Zone day pass can be purchased for just $10, featuring train rides, face painting, and a jumping castle. These practical arrangements reflect the festival's commitment to accessibility and convenience, removing barriers that might prevent people from enjoying this celebration of regional excellence.
The festival will once again support the local Rural Fire Service with fundraising activities throughout the day, demonstrating the event's commitment to giving back to the community that makes it all possible.
Tickets are $34 (students $29 with a valid ID) and include entry to the festival, a complimentary first drink (up to a $8 value), a souvenir wine glass, access to over 50 tasting stalls, live music, masterclasses, and more.

Let’s be honest—when the chill sets in and the sun clocks off early, staying motivated to move can feel like a real struggle. But Winter isn’t your body’s enemy—it’s just a change of season. And like all seasons, it offers a chance to shift gears, reassess, and recommit.
At Urth Fitness, we believe movement is medicine. Whether your goal is to feel better, try a new gym class, or simply keep your wellness on track, your cold-weather routine doesn’t need to be intense—it just needs to be intentional.
Start with the foundations. A consistent sleep routine and light structure can make all the difference. Prioritise rest, wake up at the same time each day, and block out time to train like you would any other important appointment. Whether it’s a sunrise session or something to wind down your workday, planning helps keep your health a priority, not an afterthought.
If your energy feels a little lower than usual, that’s okay. Making progress with your physical fitness doesn’t require you to always be in your highest gear. Winter can be the perfect season to slow things down, listen inward, and focus on consistency over intensity. Two to three well-fuelled workouts a week—paired with nourishing food, sleep, and recovery—can help you stay strong and steady through the colder months.
Low-impact workouts such as Reformer Pilates are also ideal for winter, allowing your body to build strength, flexibility and control without the wear and tear.
And while stepping into the cold can feel like a barrier, the first few minutes of movement are often all it takes to warm up your whole outlook. Layer up, start slow, and let the heat build from the inside out. You’ll rarely regret a workout, but you’ll often be glad you started.
If you require that extra push, booking a PT session or even bringing a friend helps. That’s why at Urth Fitness, you can bring a friend along for free every workout on our affordable Platinum Membership, because motivation loves company!
This Winter, move with intention and nurture your health. And trust that every session, no matter how small, is a step toward a stronger you.

“The most common barriers to engagement with school or employment are mental health issues, or issues around identity and culture or simply a lack of confidence. We recognise that school is not for everyone.
“The strength of our program is the ability of our youth mentors to build rapport. We operate from a Young Person Centred Approach, which basically means we listen, we hear them, we coach them, and we do it all with no judgements to help them on their career pathway.
Free Support Program For Disengaged Youth READ ONLINE
Do you know a young person aged 15 to 21 years of age who has completely disengaged from education, training or is not employed for more than 8 hours per week? Navigating your future can be daunting, especially if you’ve lost confidence or are experiencing difficulties that act as a barrier to engagement. For young people of the greater Hunter region, help is at hand.
The Get Back in the Game program, funded by the NSW Government and delivered by local
not-for-profit organisation Career Links, aims to inspire and support disengaged youth across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens and the Hunter through one-on-one mentoring, career pathway planning, and support.
Program Manager Kerri Sadler believes it’s an amazing opportunity for young people who need help to move into work or further education and training.
“We currently have 92 young people registered in the program,” said Kerri.
“Of course, not every story is one of success, and this can be challenging for our youth mentors who put so much of themselves into their charges. We celebrate the small successes – every appointment met, the forms filled in, or an activity completed. And you never know what impact you’ve had on a person down the track.”
The program is voluntary and is not tied to any Centrelink payments or obligations. The program aims to help young people restore their confidence, build work readiness and life skills, and establish ongoing support for securing a positive framework for their future pathway.

Japanese cuisine and culture have seen an extraordinary rise in popularity across Australia in recent years, with more Aussies than ever before travelling to Japan and embracing its rich culinary traditions. This national fascination has made a strong mark locally, and in Newcastle, the heartbeat of this cultural connection can be traced to one family whose vision and dedication have helped shape our city’s dining landscape.
At the centre of this story is the Namba family, whose influence spans three acclaimed Japanese restaurants: Nagisa, Susuru, and ÂPÉ Chilean Nikkei Restaurant. It all began with Chef Tetsuhiko Namba, a Tokyo-trained chef whose adventurous spirit took him from the kitchens of Sydney to the pastures of Gunnedah, where he raised his family on a cattle farm. In 2004, driven by passion and purpose, Tetsuhiko brought his family to Newcastle to open Nagisa at Honeysuckle—a bold step that would lay the foundation for a lasting culinary legacy.
Tetsuhiko’s sons Taiyo and Yohei joined the family business, Taiyo (formerly an architect) as business manager and Yohei as an awardwinning sommelier and restaurant manager.
“When you start out, you don’t know what people are going to want, so each of our restaurants has evolved over time, and we’re proud of what’s been achieved,” says Taiyo.
“With ÂPÉ, the space next door to Nagisa became available after Covid in 2022, and it
made from pineapples. Diners can, of course, choose to sit outside with views over the harbour, but all the action is inside!
When it comes to the food itself, there are several options for dining, including the à la carte menu, lunch service, a Butcher's Feast option priced at $125 per person, and the Feed Me Menu for dinner at $75 per person. They accommodate dietary restrictions and can cater for vegans, people with celiac disease, and those with nut allergies.
According to Taiyo, the steaks are “next level”, and the scallops will also “take you to culinary heaven!”
was perfect timing. Dad had just retired, and we wanted to do yakitori with charcoal cooking and drinks. Our Sous Chef at Nagisa was Chilean and had loads of experience cooking over charcoal flames, so we decided to nurture his talent, and we couldn’t be happier with how it’s worked out.
“Chef Nicholas Pedemonte has been influenced by the fusion of South American cuisine with Japanese, which is a big thing in South America, following as it does from a massive Japanese migration into Peru. It’s known as Nikkei, which literally translates to ‘of Japanese lineage’. The name ÂPÉ means ‘fire’ in indigenous Japanese, highlighting our focus on cooking over open flame.
“Diners can expect a seamless blend of the bold, vibrant tastes of South America with the refined, delicate techniques of Japanese cooking, a strong focus on fresh, seasonal and local ingredients of the highest quality and Wagyu Steaks sourced from a farm in Singleton to die for.
“In addition, there’s a real art to cooking over flame. It’s honest cooking and fabulous to watch, which our diners can do, because our kitchen is in the middle of the space. You can sit facing the chef as he cooks over the flames; it’s a bit of a show and has a wonderful warm vibe for the winter season.”
The ‘vibe’ is enhanced by the moody interiors designed by architect Ben Berwick around the concept of fire. They’ve used a lot of natural elements with sustainability in mind, including mycelium wall panels and leather
The Feed Me Menu includes Charred Seasonal Beans, Dry Aged Salmon, Dutch Carrot, Wagyu Cheese Gyoza, Hunter 14 Day Dry Aged Pork Belly, Teriyaki Zucchini, Market Fish, Wagyu Flank 7+ Tataki, and Hazelnuts and Cocoa Ganache for dessert. There are options to add two local oysters and the Wagyu Picanha 9+. If you’re wondering what the numbers stand for, it’s the level of marbling in the meat, and 9+ is the highest you can find in Australia.
The drinks menu is also taken very seriously at ÂPÉ, with the bar open to walk-ins not intending to eat. From Hunter-grown wines paired with dishes to unique cocktails that use traditional, local and sustainable ingredients, the intent is to make imbibing a ritual, sensory experience. A great number of Sake options are available from the beverage menu, but perhaps the most extraordinary feature is the over 100 different types of Whisky, ranging from $11 to $156 for the Taketsuru 21 Years Pure Malt.
Whether you're drawn in by the flame-kissed flavours, the curated drinks, or the immersive dining experience, ÂPÉ offers more than a meal—it’s a celebration of culture, craft, and connection. Visit www.apeyakitoribar.com.au for more information.

Nestled against the iconic Brokenback Mountain Range, De Iuliis Wines continues to cement its reputation as one of the Hunter Valley's premier wine producers. The story of this acclaimed winery stretches back four generations to the mountains of Abruzzi, Italy, where the family tradition of winemaking began with Mike De Iuliis' great-grandfather Donato and grandfather Celeste.
The Australian chapter of the De Iuliis winemaking story began in 1987 when Mike's parents, Anna and Joss, purchased a 20-hectare cattle
property on Lovedale Road. After three years of soil regeneration, they planted their first vines—Semillon and Chardonnay, followed by Shiraz, Merlot, and Verdelho. Today, the family operates three vineyards across the Hunter Valley, including the historic Steven Vineyard acquired in 2013.
Mike De Iuliis, a fourth-generation winemaker with a post-graduate degree in Oenology and Len Evans Tutorial training, has elevated the winery to new heights. His innovative approach has earned the winery multiple accolades, including the coveted Doug Seabrook Memorial Trophy for Best Red Wine of Show at the 2024 PKF Hunter Valley Wine Show for their 2023 Limited Release Shiraz. The winery also took home the John Lewis Trophy for Best Museum Red with their 2014 Talga Road Shiraz, continuing their remarkable streak of awards.
In recognition of his expertise, Mike was recently announced as the new Chair of Judges for the 2025 Sydney Royal Wine Show—a significant honour that highlights his standing in Australia's wine industry.
De Iuliis Wines is equally committed to sustainability, implementing innovative practices such as using biochar across their vineyards to reduce carbon emissions and improve soil fertility. They've also pioneered alternative grape varieties better suited to a changing climate, including Pecorino, Touriga, and Montepulciano, which thrive in the Hunter Valley's Mediterranean-like conditions.
Visitors to the landmark cellar door can enjoy flights of small-batch, handcrafted wines led by a knowledgeable and passionate team. The spacious, light-filled venue offers breathtaking views from its observation tower and outdoor deck, where guests might even spot the resident kangaroos.
Rated in the top 2% of Australian wineries with Halliday Wine Companion's five red stars, De Iuliis Wines exemplifies the Hunter Valley's commitment to exceptional winemaking while honouring family tradition and embracing innovation for a sustainable future.

Latitude 32 Wines, nestled along Hermitage Road in the heart of Pokolbin, is raising a glass to its first year of operation. Since opening its doors in April 2024, the boutique winery has quickly carved out a name for itself, earning an impressive four and a half stars from James Halliday and establishing a strong following thanks to its relaxed, modern approach to the Hunter Valley wine experience.
At the heart of Latitude 32 is Emma White’s vision: “fun with serious intent.” Her cellar door, framed by sweeping vineyard views and the stunning Brokenback Mountains, invites guests to immerse themselves in wine, nature, and
good times. Whether it's a picnic on the lawn, a stroll through the vines with a glass in hand, or a family game on the grass, Latitude 32 offers something refreshingly different.
Adding to the celebration, Latitude 32 welcomed Adam Holmberg as their full-time head winemaker in November 2024. Formerly of Tyrrell's and Leogate, Holmberg steps into his first lead role with a passion for innovation and craftsmanship that aligns perfectly with the winery’s ethos. His arrival marks a new chapter for Latitude 32, as they continue to refine their range and deepen their roots in the region’s rich winemaking tradition.
The story of Latitude 32 Wines is as much about personal reinvention as it is about winemaking. Founders Emma and David White
hailed from the UK and spent their corporate careers travelling the world and indulging in their hobby of "wine chasing." But after years at the helm of major companies, Emma made the bold decision to pursue her true passion— premium wine. Armed with a Diploma in Wine and a relentless curiosity, she and David acquired two properties in the Hunter Valley, one of which boasts a historic Tyrrell’s vineyard with 45-year-old vines. With this foundation, they began crafting wines that reflect their vision: high-quality, honest, and expressive of the land from which they come.
Latitude 32’s vineyard is already producing a strong line-up of varietals: classic Hunter Semillon, two distinct Chardonnay styles each vintage, Semillon-Chardonnay blends, Shiraz,
Rosé crafted from Shiraz, and a Méthode Traditionelle sparkling made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Always forward-thinking, Emma and winemaker Adam are planning to plant the Spanish varietal Mencia, along with the robust Italian Aglianico.
“One of the advantages of being new to this industry is that we are not beholden to multiple generations of traditions,” Emma explains.
“We don’t have to deliver that history in the glass. We approach winemaking not from the traditional winemaker’s perspective, but from a consumer’s perspective. This gives us enormous freedom and flexibility in terms of our vintages. We fully embrace vintage variation and respect what happens in the vineyard. We make what we like to drink and will not force our vintages to taste the same year after year.”
It’s this open-minded, hands-in-the-dirt approach that’s making Latitude 32 a rising star in the Hunter—and one to watch in the years ahead.
Winemaker Adam agrees and is excited about the freedom he has for experimentation.
“Emma has given me free rein,” said Adam. “Latitude 32 has already developed its own style as a brand, and now I get to bring my own approach to that style, bringing with me the various wine making techniques I’ve learnt working on great wines of the Hunter and always keeping our consumers in mind. We want to create wines that our customers want to drink, wines that are approachable and fruit-friendly. We’re seeing a lot more demand for lower alcohol, which requires a close eye on the fruit."
"I’m excited to push the boundaries of tradition without losing the quality and having some fun with it.”
Adam had a long apprenticeship, working as an assistant winemaker under Mark Woods at Leogate Estate for ten years. Before that, he worked at Tyrrells for three years under the tutelage of legendary winemaker Andrew Spinaze. He has also worked on vintages across Europe, New Zealand and the Napa Valley and shares Emma’s passion for fruit-first winemaking and responsible land stewardship. At the heart of Latitude 32’s winemaking philosophy is a deep respect for the land
and a proactive approach to protecting it for future generations. While sustainability is a buzzword across the wine industry, Emma White prefers the term regenerative—a more active commitment to healing and improving the vineyard ecosystem rather than simply maintaining it. Latitude 32 is leaning into a new era of environmentally conscious viticulture.
“It’s important to me to convert as much of our practice as possible to those that help the land regenerate,” Emma explains. “I want to look after our planet and our future, but I also want the best possible soil for our fruit to grow in.”
That belief underpins a number of changes at the vineyard, from reducing tractor and diesel use to eliminating harsh chemicals in favour of natural alternatives; every decision is grounded in both ecological responsibility and wine quality. Instead of synthetic pesticides, ladybugs are released to manage pests, and native bees are introduced to pollinate the diverse cover crops planted between the vine rows.
In the off-season, the vineyard team plants multiple seed varieties—including canola, legumes, and rhubarb—between the rows. This strategy not only breaks the cycle of monoculture but also acts as a powerful natural fertiliser when the cover crop is mowed back into the soil.
“It becomes an ecosystem that looks after itself,” Emma says. “It improves soil health, reduces the need for external inputs, and creates a more resilient vineyard overall.”
These regenerative practices are still evolving, but they reflect a core ethos of innovation and care that defines everything at Latitude 32—from the soil to the glass.
"It’s more like the European style of winemaking, where you talk about the different vintages and embrace the variation. We love it that way.”
Nothing epitomises this approach more than the 2024 vintage of The Enigma. Seven years in the making, The Enigma is destined to
change perceptions of wine, pushing sensory boundaries and delivering an experience that’s been hailed as “Australia in a glass.”
“A white wine made from black grapes, inspired by winemaking traditions from around the world but rooted firmly in the terroir of the Hunter Valley. This wine comes from our 45-year-old drygrown Pinot Noir vines at our Duck Hollow vineyard and is both a tribute to our region and a study in contrast – a wine crafted ‘through a new lens’.”
Emma and David were inspired to create this distinctive White Pinot Noir after their travels to Alsace, France, in 2017, where they first discovered and fell in love with it. Creating a white wine with true Pinot Noir flavour characteristics without a pink Rosé hue was a significant challenge. The process of successfully vinifying the black grapes to produce a wine that looks truly white is a secret that Emma is not about to share!
and lawn games to keep everyone, including the kids, entertained. It’s also a dogfriendly environment where picnics are encouraged, and you can warm yourself around the fire pit.
The Enigma is now available for tastings at the cellar door, which has a relaxed farmhouse vibe featuring various seating arrangements to suit whatever makes people feel comfortable, and lots of glass so that people can enjoy the view across the vines. There’s a verandah, patio
Visitors to the cellar door can enjoy a delicious selection of light snacks with their wines, including a vegan cheese board, but the real point of difference here is the dumplings and wine pairing with various flavour combinations, pork and prawn, Szechuan beef, cheeseburger and vegetarian options.
Booked breakfast hampers are available from 9am to enjoy in the vineyards. Visitors can do walks through the vineyards with the
winemaker and the viticulturist. Once a month there is a Friday Night Jam Session, a relaxed event with a food truck serving dinner and plenty of wine on offer until 9pm. The cellar door is open Thursday to Monday, 10am to 5pm, and by appointment only Tuesday and Wednesday. Wine tastings begin at $15 per person for seven tastings, or you can purchase a glass of wine for $12.

There is one property in Pokolbin that is truly representative of the Hunter Valley’s wine industry - its history, its quality, its reputation for award-winning wines and epicurean delights. This estate offers everything visitors are looking for when they flock to the region, and if you only have time to visit one place, Ben Ean should be at the top of your list.
Formerly known as Lindeman’s Ben Ean, the estate has a long winemaking history of over 170 years, making it a place of pioneers. Under the Lindeman’s brand, the vineyards on the estate produced some of the most successful wines in Australian viticulture history. Despite this, it sat for several years closed and abandoned until the next generation of winemaking pioneers took it on in 2017. Hunter winemaking icons of the industry, Colin Peterson and Brian McGuigan, joined together in a partnership to purchase the estate and committed to preserving its heritage and to forging the next chapter of its story. With a philosophy of “from our wine families to yours,” the estate features the wines of the extraordinarily talented winemakers of the Petersons and the McGuigans, including Savannah Estate, Lisa McGuigan Wines, Weerona, Petersons Wines, Gunpowder, and The Still House Wines. In addition, thanks to the foresight and prodigious wine collection
of Colin Peterson, Ben Ean is the only place in NSW where visitors to the cellar door can book a tasting of Penfolds Grange as well as other premium Penfolds wines.
With Savannah Peterson at the helm, there has been extraordinary dedication to returning the estate to its former glory and its rightful place in history, with extensive refurbishment to the cellar door, restaurant, function, and winery areas as well as the conversion of the tin shed
that once housed John McDonald’s distillery in 1907 into the uber luxurious The Still House. The Still House has become the most soughtafter destination for VIPs and those wanting to enjoy private dining and tasting experiences while soaking up the extraordinary heritage of this once-humble building.
The highly popular Baumé Restaurant is as popular with locals as it is with visitors. Influenced by Mediterranean flavours and
featuring family-friendly favourites such as pizza and pasta, diners can enjoy the delicious fare on a sun-drenched terrace, sipping wine from an extensive wine list that even includes options from Colin Peterson’s cellar for those looking for something extra special.
Not content with providing some of the industry’s most exclusive and premium tasting experiences at the cellar door, creating unique event spaces that are popular for weddings and VIP functions or creating a restaurant that gets the balance just right, Savannah wanted to do more.
“Her energy is incredible,” said Ben Ean’s Sales and Marketing Manager Kurt Nilon.
“Savannah wanted to create a one-stop shop. Come for the tasting but stay for lunch wasn’t quite enough.
“We hired a fabulous dessert chef for Baumé, Chef Steve, who trained in London, owned the original Euro Patisserie in Newcastle and has over 40 years’ experience as a pastry chef. Steve was keen to expand on his work, and the Ben Ean Patisserie was born in mid-2024. It’s been so successful that in December last year, we also opened the Deli at Ben Ean. So now, visitors have more options to choose from.
“Visitors can enjoy lunch at Baume, coffee and dessert from the Patisserie, grab a sandwich, or a cheese board from the Deli. They can eat in the restaurant, enjoy the terrace with views over the vineyard, or even order takeaway."
"There is truly something for everyone and every budget now."
“Last week we had a group of local firefighters pop in to pick up lunch, and they told us that we had the best pies they’d ever tasted! That’s a great recommendation!”
Open seven days a week, Ben Ean Patisserie invites guests to indulge in a tempting array of freshly baked pastries, mouth-watering cakes, delicious pies, and classic sausage rolls. Coffee enthusiasts will appreciate the warm cups of expertly brewed coffee, which are perfect for kickstarting a day of wine tasting and exploration. For those with dietary restrictions, the patisserie offers a selection of gluten-free
options, ensuring that all visitors can enjoy a taste of their exquisite baked goods. Everything is made inhouse with a menu that changes every day.
“Now that the weather is starting to cool down, I’m excited for Cornish pasties, which Chef Steve has promised us. Our pies and sausage rolls sell out all the time. I love that there’s always something new to savour. Customer favourites such as French Vanilla Slices and Lemon Meringue Pies are usually available, so no one leaves disappointed.”
The Patisserie is right next door to the Deli and the two share the terrace space enabling customers to shop at both stores and enjoy the fare from either, whether it be sipping on a glass of wine or a coffee, soaking up the sunshine and enjoying the views across the vineyards or heading down to the lawn for a picnic.
Inspired by New York-style delicatessens, the Deli at Ben Ean menu is packed with gourmet treats—think artisanal cheeses, premium cured meats, fresh sandwiches made with a choice of baked-in-house focaccia or panini. The staff pick is The Sub – house made meatballs in tomato sugo with mozzarella and rocket for $18 or perhaps the Rubenesque is more to your taste with pastrami, swiss cheese, sauerkraut, baby spinach and dijonaise for $20. You can also order ‘Tagliere di Salumi e Formaggi’, a charcuterie board with specialty cured meats, artisanal cheeses with bread and
antipasti. Whatever you choose, it’s possible to order it to take away, and locals have started dropping in to pick up the specialty products to enjoy at home.
Just as there are so many excellent options for dining, so too are there multiple options for wine tasting with all the wines exclusive to Ben Ean’s cellar door - Savannah Estate, Lisa McGuigan Wines, Weerona, Petersons Wines and Gunpowder, The Still House Wines and Penfolds. Standard tastings are $20pp, or you can try Penfolds Grange for $65pp. For those seeking a unique experience, Ben Ean presents the Still House Tasting within the historic on-site Still House. The Functions Chef creates bespoke menus for the private tastings at $190pp for a maximum of 12 people.
And if you still need a reason to visit Ben Ean, why not head out there on the third weekend of September for the Vineyard Vibes at Ben Ean festival – a food, wine and music festival with three different bands performing across the day beginning with So Fresh '90s, then rocking on to Rock Rhapsody 80s and finishing off with the melodic favourites of ABBA. To purchase tickets for the festival when they become available, or to book for tastings and Baumé restaurant, head to the website www.benean.com.au.
Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a local, Ben Ean has so much to offer that there’s no need to go anywhere else! The name Ben Ean is Scottish and means “mountain of pleasure”. The Peterson and McGuigan families chose to reinstate this historical name when they took over the estate, and nothing could be more apt. See you there - Slàinte Mhath!
For craft beer lovers visiting the Hunter Valley, The Valley Brewhouse stands as the region's original craft brewery and a must-visit destination.
Nestled at the heritage-listed Nulkaba brickworks site, the Valley Brewhouse is instantly recognisable by its distinctive beehive-shaped red brick kilns—remnants of the property's industrious past. Established in 2003 as the region's first craft brewery after the closure of mainstream breweries in the 1980s, this family-friendly venue combines award-winning beers, delicious food, and live entertainment in a spacious setting.
The 10-acre property was originally chosen in 1880 for its rich clay deposits, ideal for making bricks, roofing tiles, and sewage pipes. For nearly a century, it was one of the region's largest employers outside the mines and was deemed an essential service during World War II. The site was transformed into a tavern in 1989, with accommodation added in 2002 for visitors to Hunter Valley wine country.
The brewing tradition began in 2003 when founding Head Brewer Luke Scott started crafting beer under the Hunter Beer Company
banner. Current Head Brewer Keith Grice, who joined in 2006 and took the helm in 2007, has become one of the founding fathers of craft brewing in the Hunter Valley, winning multiple awards over two decades.
"When we started out here, there were around 50 breweries in Australia," says Keith. "Now, even in this economic climate, there are around 700."
The Valley Brewhouse recently came under the Rogers Hotels banner, owned by Campbell Rogers and business partner Josh Gamgee. Rogers Hotels operates several venues across Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, including the Sunnyside Tavern, the Mayfield Hotel, and the Colliery Inn.
The change has brought positive developments to the brewery. According to Grice, "We're already seeing huge positive changes. The Rogers Hotels group has set up
processes and systems that provide a smoother running operation and a more enjoyable experience for our customers."
Campbell Rogers, who entered the hotel business in 2009, believes creating the right atmosphere is crucial: "It's all about creating an environment that people enjoy and want to spend time in. It has to be fun, safe, and serve delicious food."
The brewery team, consisting of Keith Grice, fellow brewer Daniel Gayner, and Cellar Door Manager Claire Bullen, work collaboratively to create a diverse range of craft beers. Their core range includes the popular Draught, an approachable golden ale that Keith calls his "gateway beer," and the Hazy Pale Ale with its tropical and citrus fruit flavours. What sets the Valley Brewhouse apart is its focus on limitededition brews.
"Being so close to wine country means our market is a bit different," explains Keith.
"People are on a visit, on holiday, looking for fun experiences, and wanting to try different things. We tailor our beers to suit that market."
Visitors can enjoy brewery tours lasting up to one hour (including three 200ml beer tastings) on Fridays at 5pm and Saturdays at
12pm and 5pm. Guided tastings, featuring eight 75ml beers, are available at 11am and 2pm from Tuesday to Saturday. Tasting paddles with four 200ml beers offer another sampling option.
The Valley Brewhouse is much more than just a brewery. The on-site Smoke House Kitchen serves mouthwatering smoked meats and an ever-changing menu in the outdoor Beer Garden every Saturday and Sunday from 11:30am to 5pm. The Bistro offers premium pub meals for lunch and dinner, with many mains under $30.
Live entertainment fills the venue every weekend and you will find it’s a great place for group bookings, birthdays and casual celebrations. If live sport is more your thing, you will catch every major sport live with a great TAB to watch live Sky Racing and bet on your favourite teams.
Set on five acres with a massive lawn featuring twenty picnic tables and a brand-new large playground for kids, the Valley Brewhouse offers a relaxed atmosphere perfect for families. Three separate function areas are available for events, and the beautifully renovated KilnHaus serves as a dedicated space for weddings and conferences.
Whether you're a local (ask about the locals' discount card) or a visitor to the Hunter Valley, the Valley Brewhouse offers an unforgettable experience combining craft beer, great food, and good times. Open seven days until late, you’ll find this gem on Wine Country Drive at Nulkaba.

A drive along Hermitage Road leads you to one of the Hunter Valley's most cherished hidden gems – Tintilla Estate. For over three decades, this picturesque 25-hectare property has embodied the perfect harmony of exceptional wines, artisanal produce, and warm family hospitality.
Established in 1994 by former vascular surgeon Robert Lusby, Tintilla Estate draws inspiration from European wine traditions while celebrating the unique terroir of the Hunter Valley. The estate's name itself pays homage to an Old-World term for red wine used in 17th-century Bordeaux, reflecting the Lusby family's commitment to honouring its winemaking heritage.
this international experience and bring it to the Hunter Valley," says Robert Lusby, reflecting on the estate's philosophy.
The tasting experience at Tintilla exemplifies this Mediterranean approach to hospitality. Guests can savour premium wines in large Riedel glasses while enjoying cheese platters garnished with house-made condiments – all with panoramic views of the rolling vineyards. The estate's handcrafted offerings extend beyond wines to include olives and tapenades, vincotto (a spiced grape must elixir), seasonal jams, and their signature chilli tomato relish.
Today, Tintilla is very much a family affair with winemakers Robert and son James Lusby continuing to produce distinctive singlevineyard wines that showcase the region's potential. The Dionysian dancer adorning their labels – a nod to ancient Greek wine traditions – embodies their philosophy that wine is meant to be enjoyed in communion with good food and company.
As the seasons shift across the Hunter Valley, Tintilla's bounty evolves with nature's rhythm. The estate's orchard provides fresh ingredients for their artisanal preserves, while their vineyard yields exceptional varietals including Shiraz, Semillon, Merlot, and Sangiovese.
What sets Tintilla apart is its holistic approach to the vineyard experience. While award-winning wines remain the centrepiece, visitors are invited to engage with the estate's complete agricultural bounty. The property features over 500 olive trees planted even before the first vines, showcasing varieties including Spanish Manzanillo, Sevillano, Verdale, Jumbo Kalamata, and the nutty Tuscan Frantoio.
"Our travels in Europe have shown us that internationally, especially the Tuscans and Burgundians, showed the way with integrating family, wine and food. We have sought to take
Whether you're a seasoned wine enthusiast or simply seeking an authentic taste of Hunter Valley hospitality, Tintilla Estate welcomes visitors daily from 10:30am to 5:30pm. Groups of eight or fewer can simply drop in, although bookings are recommended.
For a truly immersive Hunter Valley experience that combines Old World charm with the warm hospitality of a family-run estate, Tintilla remains one of the region's most rewarding destinations, where every glass tells a story of heritage, passion, and exceptional craftsmanship.

Let’s face it: the winter cold can kill your exercise motivation quickly. It’s dark before dinner, your bed is warm, and the cold air outside your doona feels like an instant “nope.” But staying consistent through the colder months doesn’t have to be complicated. At Huntlee Fitness, we’re all about keeping things simple, sustainable, and realistic, especially when the weather’s working against you.
Start with the basics: build your routine around good sleep and structure. Staying up late and getting by on five hours a night won’t always make for the best training sessions. Set a consistent sleep and wake time; it’ll give you more energy, better focus, and a higher chance of sticking to your training.
Whether it’s early morning, lunchtime or after work, book in sessions and treat them like appointments. Do yourself a favour and lower the pressure you put on yourself - you don’t need to live in the gym during winter. Simply turn up enough when it works for you, and if your food, sleep, and recovery are solid, two or three 30–40-minute sessions a week can be enough to maintain progress. Winter is a perfect time to stop chasing PB’s and focus on showing up. Some weeks, ticking the box and showing up is a win.
Of course, the cold doesn’t help, but it’s manageable. Layer up, bring a hoodie, and start your sessions with some mobility or light movement to get your body warm. You’ll feel better after the first five minutes. Cold showers or ice baths at home can also help build mental and physical resilience for those tough mornings.
Supplements can give you a push when motivation’s low, and a touch of caffeine, however you prefer it, can help get you through the door. Just remember to use them as tools, not crutches.
Most importantly, remember why you started. Training isn’t a chore, it’s a way to feel stronger, fitter, and more in control. Set small, realistic goals and celebrate the wins. Winter doesn’t have to be your off-season. Stay sharp. Stay moving. Keep showing up.
