Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church.

The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment.

The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass.

The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus.

You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins.

We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

A Reflection A MORNING RESOLVE I will try this day to live a simple, sincere, and serene life, repelling promptly every thought of discontent, anxiety, discouragement, impurity, and self-seeking; cultivating cheerfulness, magnanimity, charity, and the habit of holy silence; exercising economy in expenditure, generosity in giving, carefulness in conversation, diligence in appointed service, fidelity to every trust, and a childlike faith in God. In particular I will try to be faithful in those habits of prayer, work, study, physical exercise, eating, and sleep which I believe the Holy Spirit has shown me to be right.

And as I cannot in my own strength do this, nor even with a hope of success attempt it, I look to thee, O Lord God my Father, in Jesus my Saviour, and ask for the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Dear friends in Christ, forty days ago we celebrated the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now we recall the day on which he was presented in the Temple, when he was offered to the Father and shown to his people as the Light of the nations. As a sign of his coming amongst us, his mother was purified, even as we now come to him for cleansing. In their old age Simeon and Anna recognized him as their Lord, even as we sing of his glory this day. On this feast of Candlemas we celebrate both the joy of his coming and his searching judgement, looking back to the day of his birth and forward to the coming days of his passion.

The Thurible CLERGY NOTES I don’t know about you, but I have been more aware than ever this year of the dark mornings and early sunsets. Although the shortest day was actually December 21st, the winter nights till seem very long. This is why I am looking forward to Lent! The word “lent” comes from an Old English version of the verb “to lengthen.” It reminds us of the approach of springtime and celebrates the fact that as Easter gets nearer, we finally experience lighter and longer days.

We begin with scripture itself and then move on to the divinity of Christ and the nature of the Resurrection. Our final session will consider the Second Coming.

We will learn about the nature of metaphor. We will see what we can learn from a study of poetry, imagery and myth. We will come to understand that something may not be historically accurate but is still profoundly and deeply true.

Details of the four sessions are given in this bulletin, along with Lent begins liturgically on Ash dates, times, and location.

OUR PARISH FOR THE DURATION As most of you know, Fr. Kevin is out of action until he is able to put pressure on his leg. His recovery will be speeded by rest and freedom from anxiety!

The Wardens agreed with the Executive Archdeacon that it was sensible to appoint Fr. Neil Gray as the part-time, temporary priest-in-charge.

AVM The Annual Vestry meeting will take place after Solemn Mass on Sunday, Feb. 23. Please make every effort to attend this important meeting. We will be receiving the Annual report, a helpful record of our ministry and mission last year, as well as electing individuals to positions of leadership. It is a time to give thanks for the past and make plans, under God’s guidance for the future. All Guild/Ministry reports to be submitted to the Parish Office by Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020.
