As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

Entrance Rite At the entrance of the clergy and servers all stand. HYMN 614 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Forgive Our Sins As We Forgive Forgive our sins as we forgive, you taught us, Lord, to pray; but you alone can grant us grace to live the words we say. How can your pardon reach and bless the unforgiving heart that broods on wrongs, and will not let old bitterness depart? In blazing light your cross reveals the truth we dimly knew: what trivial debts are owed to us, how great our debt to you! Lord, cleanse the depths within our souls and bid resentment cease; then, bound to all in bonds of love, our lives will spread your peace.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Genesis. Now the Lord said to Abram, "Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Genesis 12:1-4A

I lift up my eyes to the hills; from where is my help to come? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. Antiphon

He will not let your foot be moved and he who watches over you will not fall asleep. Behold, he who keeps watch over Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep; Antiphon The Lord himself watches over you; the Lord is your shade at your right hand, So that the sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. Antiphon The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; it is he who shall keep you safe. The Lord shall watch over your going out and your coming in, from this time forth for evermore. SECOND READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. What then are we to say was gained by Abraham, our ancestor according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness." Now to one who works, wages are not reckoned as a gift but as something due. But to one who without works trusts him who justifies the ungodly, such faith is reckoned as righteousness. For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, as it is written, "I have made you the father of many nations")-in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. Romans 4:1-5, 13-17

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God." Jesus answered him, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above." Nicodemus said to him, "How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother's womb and be born?" Jesus answered, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, 'You must be born from above.' The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." Nicodemus said to him, "How can these things be?" Jesus answered him, "Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him." John 3:1-17

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy communion may be fulfilled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. HYMN 468 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — To Abraham and Sarah To Abraham and Sarah the call of God was clear: 'Go forth and I will show you a country rich and fair. You need not fear the journey for I have pledged my word: that you shall be my people and I will be your God.' From Abraham and Sarah arose a pilgrim race, dependent for their journey on God's abundant grace. And in their heart was written by God this saving word: ‘That you shall be my people and I will be your God.’ We of this generation on whom God's hand is laid can journey to the future secure and unafraid, rejoicing in God's goodness and trusting in this word: ‘That you shall be my people and I will be your God.'

The Thurible CLERGY NOTES There is a very interesting article in Anglican Journal about the Reverend Malcolm Guite. He is an Anglican priest, chaplain to Girton College, Cambridge, and a published poet. We were fortunate enough to have him at St. James’ as our preacher one Sunday last year.

In the interview, Guite refers to a poem by George Herbert called “Prayer.” I have printed it in the Reflection section at the beginning of the bulletin. We would do well to follow his approach to the poem as it gives a wonderful way of understanding it. It is a sonnet, so it is only 14 lines. At first sight it seems like a random jumble of phrases. Until we realize that it is a series of 26 images. Each of these is a way of looking at and participating in prayer. Guite recommends that we “slow the pace” down by exploring each one of them deliberately and in a meditative fashion. Do try it.

Do you know the works of George Herbert (1593-1633)? Like Guite he was a priest and poet. He was born into an aristocratic English family and had a distinguished career in the civil service, but he was a modest and unassuming man. He was happy to serve as an ordinary parish priest. A number of his poems were set to music and are sung regularly as hymns. Four of them are included in Common Praise – the hymn book of the Anglican Church of Canada. Father Neil Gray

COOPER PLACE PARKADE FOBS St. James’ Parish has the exclusive full time use of eight underground parking stalls at Cooper Place; they are assigned to salaried clergy and parish staff. There has been an agreement between St. Luke’s Home (lessor) and Cooper Place (lessee) to allow Parish to use “non-24/7 reserved” stalls on weekends, statutory holidays, and weekdays after 5 pm. Cooper Place recently designated additional parking stalls as “shared” for “scramble” parking. Over the years, 50 fobs for parking under Cooper Place have been issued; however, the records are incomplete. It has become necessary to bring our records up to date. To do this, all existing fobs will be cancelled and re-issued to those who apply to the Wardens. This process will begin shortly. THE HUMAN CORONAVIRUS Our Archbishop has written a pastoral letter about the ways in which we can address our fears around this issue and also remain faithful in our Eucharistic life as a community. She suggest a number of practices with regard to the liturgy that will help to minimize the chances of spreading infection. These include the use of hand sanitizers, care with administering the chalice, not allowing the practice of intincting, and respecting the variety of ways of sharing the Peace. All of these, we are happy to say, have been standard procedures of St. James’ for some time. To err on the side of caution, we have decided, in addition, to discontinue the use of holy water stoups located at various entrances to the church. Archbishop Melissa urges us to keep the situation in our prayers and to avoid over-reaction, not giving way to prejudice and fear.
