A Reflection A PRAYER AT THIS TIME OF COVID-19 Blessed are you, eternal God. Source of all healing. you have given us the means by which you make your creatures whole; our presence and our skills, our understanding of your laws and our humility before the unknown, our words and our hands, medicines that soothe and cure, machines that aid our work. We give ourselves to you: empty us of all that hinders the flow of your healing Spirit. Take our hands and our lives that we may live in our image and reflect your glory. This was written by Jim Cotter, Anglican priest in 1990 during the AIDS epidemic.

HYMN 60 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — O Kind Creator, Bow Thine Ear (Tune: JESU CORONA) O kind Creator, bow thine ear To mark the cry, to know the tear Before thy throne of mercy spent In this thy holy fast of Lent. Our hearts are open, Lord, to thee; Thou knowest our infirmity; Pour out on all who seek thy face Abundance of thy pardoning grace. Our sins are many, this we know; Spare us, good Lord, thy mercy show; And for the honour of thy name Our fainting souls to life reclaim. Give us the self-control that springs From discipline of outward things, That fasting inward secretly The soul may purely dwell with thee. We pray thee, Holy Trinity, One God, unchanging Unity, That we from this our abstinence May reap the fruits of penitence. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Exodus. From the wilderness of Sin the whole congregation of the Israelites journeyed by stages, as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. The people quarrelled with Moses, and said, "Give us water to drink." Moses said to them, "Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?" But the people thirsted there for water; and the people complained against Moses and said, "Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and livestock with thirst?" So Moses cried out to the Lord, "What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me." The Lord said to Moses, "Go on ahead of the people, and take some of the elders of Israel with you; take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink." Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. He called the place Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarrelled and tested the Lord, saying, "Is the Lord among us or not?" Exodus 17:1-7

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.

Come, let us sing to the Lord; let us shout for joy to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving and raise a loud shout to him with psalms. Antiphon For the Lord is a great God, and a great king above all gods. In his hand are the caverns of the earth, and the heights of the hills are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands have molded the dry land. Antiphon

8 | HIGH MASS

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. Oh, that to-day you would hearken to his voice! Antiphon Harden not your hearts, as your forebears did in the wilderness, at Meribah, and on that day at Massah, when they tempted me. They put me to the test, though they had seen my works. Antiphon Forty years long I detested that generation and said, "This people are wayward in their hearts; they do not know my ways." So I swore in my wrath, "They shall not enter into my rest." Antiphon Psalm 95

SECOND READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans.

Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person - though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. Romans 5:1-11

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?" (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water." The woman said to him, "Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?" Jesus said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life." The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water." Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come back." The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, 'I have no husband'; for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!" The woman said to him, "Sir, I see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshipped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem." Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks

such as these to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is called Christ). "When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us." Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one who is speaking to you." Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman, but no one said, "What do you want?" or, "Why are you speaking with her?" Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people, "Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he?" They left the city and were on their way to him. Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, "Rabbi, eat something." But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you do not know about." So the disciples said to one another, "Surely no one has brought him something to eat?" Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work. Do you not say, 'Four months more, then comes the harvest'? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting. The reaper is already receiving wages and is gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true, 'One sows and another reaps.' I sent you to reap that for which you did not labour. Others have laboured, and you have entered into their labour." Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman's testimony, "He told me everything I have ever done." So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, "It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Saviour of the world." John 4:5-42

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, we thy humble servants with all thy holy Church, remembering the precious death of thy beloved Son, his mighty resurrection, and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again in glory, do make before thee, in this sacrament of the holy bread of eternal life and the cup of everlasting salvation, the memorial which he hath commanded. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy communion may be fulfilled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. HYMN 508 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say I heard the voice of Jesus say, "Come unto me and rest; lay down, thou weary one, lay down thy head upon my breast." I came to Jesus as I was, so weary, worn, and sad; I found in him a resting place, and he has made me glad. I heard the voice of Jesus say, "Behold, I freely give the living water; thirsty one, stoop down and drink, and live." I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life-giving stream; my thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him. I heard the voice of Jesus say, "I am this dark world's light; look unto me, thy morn shall rise, and all thy day be bright." The Thurible CLERGY NOTES Things are a little different as we gather to worship at Mass on Sunday mornings! We greet each other with a smile and a wave, not a handshake or a hug. The Kiss of Peace is now shared in the same way, or more formally with a bow. The collection plate is no longer passed around and, for the duration, our coffee hour is suspended. The Common Cup has been withdrawn and we receive Holy Communion in the form of the consecrated bread. These measures have been mandated by the Archbishop following the advice of government health officials and experts. The intention is to try to avoid the spread of the Covid-19 virus by limiting human physical contact. Along with this, we are encouraged to be vigilant about hand washing and an increased attention to cleaning and sanitizing common areas.

In all of this we need to avoid both overreaction and panic. We need to find ways of supporting and encouraging one another. And of offering help and compassion to those who are affected or infected. Above all, we have to be faithful and diligent about regular prayer, bringing the whole situation into the calm and healing presence of God. Father Neil Gray

TODAY AT ST. JAMES’ THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT MORNING PRAYER 8:00 am in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel LOW MASS 8:30 am in the Lady Chapel SOLEMN MASS 10:30 am in the Church EVENING PRAYER 5:00 pm in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel

OUR PARISH COMFORT ZONES During the season of Lent, the role of the organ is reduced to that of supporting congregational singing, with the exception of Laetare Sunday (Lent 4). In so doing, we take a cue from the longestablished tradition and official stance of the Roman Catholic church, which in the spirit of no flowers on the altar and no “alleluias” helps to set this season apart, and even prepares the way for the complete absence of the organ at the Triduum, and further highlighting its glorious return at Easter. On the first Sunday in Lent, Fr. Neil spoke of Lent as a season in which to allow ourselves to experience life outside our “comfort zone”, which echos what another St James clergy person wrote a couple of years ago:

26 | THE THURIBLE

"In Lent there is no alleluia, no music as the gospel book progresses back to the celebrant, no sound as the preacher moves to the pulpit, and for myself I find the quiet borders on uncomfortable, even when reverent. It is not because of the silence. Though it might be hard to believe, I enjoy silence from time to time. No, it is because I expect music, I am used to it and when there isn’t any, I am suddenly outside my comfort zone. I think that is partly the experience of Lent. Turning toward Jesus, when we feel that pinch of discomfort.” STATIONS OF THE CROSS This Lent, as is our tradition, we will be walking with Jesus on the way of his passion and death. Each Friday, ending Friday April 3, the Stations of the Cross will be said following the 12:10 pm Mass. Please join us. COOPER PLACE PARKADE FOBS St. James’ Parish has the exclusive full time use of eight underground parking stalls at Cooper Place; they are assigned to salaried clergy and parish staff. There has been an agreement between St. Luke’s Home (lessor) and Cooper Place (lessee) to allow Parish to use “non-24/7 reserved” stalls on weekends, statutory holidays, and weekdays after 5 pm. Cooper Place recently designated additional parking stalls as “shared” for “scramble” parking. Over the years, 50 fobs for parking under Cooper Place have been issued; however, the records are incomplete. It has become necessary to bring our records up to date. To do this, all existing fobs will be cancelled and re-issued to those who apply to the Wardens. This process will begin shortly.
