The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned sin was indeed in the world before the law, but sin is not reckoned when there is no law. Yet death exercised dominion from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died through the one man's trespass, much more surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many. And the free gift is not like the effect of the one man's sin. For the judgement following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification. If, because of the one man's trespass, death exercised dominion through that one, much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness exercise dominion in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. Therefore just as one man's trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man's act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all. INVITATION TO COMMUNION All who are baptized and believe Christ present in this sacrament are invited to come forward for communion. Those who wish to receive a blessing, fold your arms rather than holding out your hand for the Sacrament. When coming forward to the altar, please approach from the centre aisle only and follow the directions of the attendant standing at the head of the aisle. Please return to your seat via the side aisles. When you receive the Holy Bread (the precious Body of Our Lord Jesus Christ) please consume it immediately. It is no longer permissible to intinct (“dunk”) the Holy Bread in the Holy Wine. You may choose not to receive the Holy Wine (the precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ) from the chalice (common cup) at this time. If so, once you have received the Holy Bread please fold your arms to indicated that you do not wish to receive from the chalice.

The Thurible CLERGY NOTES In the first part of our Lent series, we are asking a simple question “Is the Bible true?” The question may be true but the answer is anything but. Many things that are recorded there – from the parting of the Red Sea to the miracles of Jesus – seem to be impossible from any purely naturalistic standpoint. They need to be approached from the position of faith and trust. As I was preparing my thoughts for this first session, I came across a book called Jesus by Michael Grant. He approaches the Bible with the eye of an historian. He is interested to see what happens if you treat scripture in the same way as you would any work of ancient literature capable of yielding historical information. This paragraph struck me as particularly helpful: “To the ancient Jew, the natural and supernatural spheres, the visible and invisible, were one and inseparable and equally real, both manifesting in their different ways to the divine will. But the supernatural and invisible
realm was hard to describe. Abstract argument was no use; this extra-logical, extra-historical dimension could be expressed only figuratively, by means of metaphor and imagery. For what had to be conveyed was not mere statistics but a higher, more elusive sort of truth: dry literalism was of no avail when people’s imaginations had to be kindled. And these considerations were particularly relevant to Palestine, ‘where words have never been regarded as necessarily a reflection of fact’, but possess a life and vigour of their own. It was a world in which stories were used as freely as we use metaphors – a world in which possibility or impossibility, prosaic truth or untruth, often seem to be beside the point.”

TODAY: MUSIC SERIES CONCERT Sun. March 1, 7:30 pm The Laudate Singers will present a choral concert with music from the renaissance to the present day. The programme has something for everyone: experience the ethereal music of Gregorio Allegri's sublime Miserere Mei, the dreamily nostalgic Only in Sleep by Latvian musician Ēriks Ešenvalds, the profoundly beautiful Gallant Weaver by Scottish composer Sir James MacMillan, and brand new choral work by Vancouver composer Emile Deedes -Vincke. STATIONS OF THE CROSS This Lent, as is our tradition, we will be walking with Jesus on the way of his passion and death. Each Friday, ending Friday April 3, the Stations of the Cross will be said following the 12:10 pm Mass. Please join us. THE HUMAN CORONAVIRUS Our Archbishop has written a pastoral letter about the ways in which we can address our fears around this issue and also remain faithful in our Eucharistic life as a community. She suggest a number of practices with regard to the liturgy that will help to minimize the chances of spreading infection. These include the use of hand sanitizers, care with administering the chalice, not allowing the practice of intincting, and respecting the variety of ways of sharing the Peace. All of these, we are happy to say, have been standard procedures of St. James’ for some time. To err on the side of caution, we have decided, in addition, to discontinue the use of holy water stoups located at various entrances to the church. Archbishop Melissa urges us to keep the situation in our prayers and to avoid over-reaction, not giving way to prejudice and fear.
