High Mass with Procession
The image on the front page is a photograph of our Ethiopian Processional Cross, found in 1920 in a South African tribal hut (in use as a cooking grill) by a missionary priest. It was presented to St. James’ Church in 1937, where it has since been used in all festal processions. It has been estimated to date from between 1470−1700 when, according to the inscription on the shaft, it was presented to the Ethiopian Church of Kidana-Mehrat, dedicated to the honour of Our Lady. 2 | THE LITURGY OF THE PALMS & HIGH MASS
Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. Jamesâ€™. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. A Reflection A READING FROM GREGORY OF NAZIANZUS (4TH CENTURY) Why was the blood that was shed for us, God’s most precious and glorious blood, this blood of the One who carried out the sacrifice and of the One who was himself the sacrifice? Why was it poured out, and to whom was it offered? These are questions that echo within my mind. If the death of Christ was a ransom paid to the Father, the question that arises is for what reason? We were not held captive by the Father. And anyway, why should the blood of his only Son be pleasing to the Father who once refused to accept Isaac when Abraham his father offered him as a burnt offering, and instead was pleased to accept the sacrifice of a ram? Surely it is evident that the Father accepts the sacrifice of Christ, not because he demands it, still less because he feels some need of it, but in order to carry forward his own purposes for the world. Humanity had to be brought back to life by the humanity of God. We had to be summoned to life by his Son. Let the rest be adored in silence. Nothing can equal the miracle of my salvation. Liturgy of the Palms INTRODUCTION The Liturgy begins in the Parish Hall.
Dear friends in Christ, during Lent we have been preparing for the celebration of our Lordâ€™s paschal mystery. On this day our Lord Jesus Christ entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph. The people welcomed him with palms and shouts of praise, but the path before him led to self-giving, suffering, and death. Today we greet him as our King, although we know his crown is thorns and his throne a cross. We follow him this week from the glory of the palms to the glory of the resurrection by way of the dark road of suffering and death. United with him in his suffering on the cross, may we share his resurrection and new life.
Let us pray. Assist us mercifully with thy help, Lord God of our salvation, that we may enter with joy into the celebration of those mighty acts whereby thou givest us life and immortality; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD
When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, "Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, 'The Lord needs them.' And he will send them immediately." This took place to fulfil what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, "Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey." The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!" When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, "Who is this?" The crowds were saying, "This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee." Matthew 21:1-11

THE BLESSING OF THE PALMS
It is right to praise thee, almighty God, for the acts of love by which thou hast redeemed us through thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. The Hebrews acclaimed Jesus as Messiah and King, with palm branches in their hands, crying, Hosanna in the highest. We pray thee O Lord, bless + these branches + and make them holy. May we also, carrying these emblems, go forth to meet Christ and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. The clergy distribute the blessed palm crosses to the people. You are encouraged to take extra palms to give to people on the street during our procession around the block.

THE PROCESSION Weather permitting we will make a procession around the block to the front of the Church where we will gather for a Station Collect which follows the first processional hymn. If it is raining we will process directly into the Church from the Parish Hall, everyone following the Altar Party, up the north aisle around the back of the High Altar, down the south aisle and back up the centre aisle to the Altar.

When you arrive back at the Church please continue to move around the corner towards Gore Street so that those behind you can also gather in front of the Church steps. When all have arrived at the front of the Church (or the centre aisle, in case of rain) the following is sung:
The Lord is God, and he hath given us light. Set in order the procession with branches yea, even up to the horns of the altar.

Let us pray. Almighty God, whose Son was crucified yet entered into glory, may we, walking in the way of the cross, find it is for us the way of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. The Crucifer knocks on the door of the Church with the staff of the Processional Cross and the doors are opened so that we may enter into the Church just as Jesus entered into Jerusalem upon this day. The second processional hymn is sung as we enter.

All who are baptized and believe Christ present in this sacrament are invited to come forward for communion. Those who are unable to receive communion, or do not yet receive, are invited to come forward for a blessing. To indicate you wish a blessing, fold your arms rather than holding out your hand for the Sacrament. When coming forward to receive, please approach from the centre aisle only and follow the directions of the attendant standing at the head of the aisle. Please return to your seat via the side aisles. When you receive the Holy Bread please consume it immediately. It is no longer permissible to intinct the Holy Bread in the Holy Wine. You may choose not to receive the Holy Wine from the chalice at this time. If so, once you have received the Holy Bread please remain kneeling and fold your arms to indicate that you do not wish to receive from the chalice.
