High Mass

First Sunday of Advent | November 29, 2015 | 10:30 am

Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES  To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family, and strangers into our midst;  To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ;  To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest, and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need;  To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; To strive to maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves, and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________ TODAY 8:00 am 8:30 am

Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church.

The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Sometimes you will taste and see how good the Lord is. Be glad then, and give Him all honour, because His goodness to you has no measure. Sometimes you will be dry and joyless like parched land or an empty well. But your thirst and helplessness will be your best prayer if you accept them with patience and embrace them lovingly. Sometimes your prayer will be an experience of the infinite distance that separates you from God; sometimes your being and His fullness will flow into each other. Sometimes you will be able to pray only with your body and hands and eyes; sometimes your prayer will move beyond words and images; sometimes you will be able to leave everything behind you to concentrate on God and his Word. Sometimes you will be able to do nothing else but take your whole life and everything in you and bring them before God. Every hour has its own possibilities of genuine prayer. Don’t be afraid to set apart a considerable time for your prayer every day. It is your vocation. Your zeal for the Kingdom of God and your availability for all your brothers and sisters will grow all the greater for it. Remember that prayer is more powerful than anything you can achieve by your actions. -from Rule for a New Brother, Benedictine Priory - Regina Pacis, Great Britain: Anchor Press, 1973. 4 | HIGH MASS

COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant All

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

Celebrant

Let us pray. Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility, that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Jeremiah. The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfil the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: "The Lord is our righteousness." Jeremiah 33:14-16

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

Remember, O Lord, your compassion and love, for they are from everlasting. Remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions; remember me according to your love and for the sake of your goodness, O Lord. Antiphon Gracious and upright is the Lord; therefore he teaches sinners in his way. He guides the humble in doing right and teaches his way to the lowly. All the paths of the Lord are love and faithfulness to those who keep his covenant and his testimonies. Antiphon Psalm 25:5-9

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians. How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith. Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you. And may the Lord make you increase and

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, "There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in a cloud' with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." Then he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man." Luke 21:25-36 HIGH MASS | 9

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy communion may be fulfilled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Advent begins today, when we look back to the coming of Christ in his birth at Bethlehem, which we shall celebrate with great joy at Christmas, and also look forward to the fulness of time when he shall come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and all things will be gathered up in him and presented to God the Father. Christ also comes to us in the present: in word and in sacrament, of course, but also in and through one another and those amongst whom we live, not least in the poor and marginalised. In this "in-between time" the Church calls us to prepare the way for Christ's second coming by praying and working together for the coming of God's kingdom, with its values of justice and mercy, love and peace, "here on earth as it is in heaven." Amidst the current uncertainties and

tensions of the global political climate, the fears inspired by terrorism and extremism, and the dangers of climate-change, Christians draw hope and strength from the Reign of Christ, which we celebrated last Sunday, that in his dying and rising again the victory is already won: we are both to look around us for signs of his kingdom breaking into our world today, and also in our life together as the Church, to be ourselves signs of that kingdom.

Fr Kevin Update on Rectory & Crypt Redevelopment: There will be a short meeting at 12.15 pm on Sunday, December 13 to give a progress update on outline plans and finance for the proposed redevelopment of the Rectory and the Crypt. The Trustees hope then to move the project forward.

This project supports the Coming Home Society’s brand new initiative – the Wisdom of Elders program. The program connects at-risk youth with Aboriginal Elders who provide spiritual care, guidance, and cultural teachings. Many are single parents, and most are living at or below the poverty line.

It’s easy to make your donation! Pick up one of the specially prepared bags from the pews or the Narthex. Each bag contains instructions and the latest Coming Home Society newsletter telling about the new Wisdom of Elders program. Return your donations to the box in the Narthex by December 20th. KIDS’ CORNER Vision: To help children and their parents find new ways to more fully participate in mass and aid in their spiritual formation. Jesus tells us many things about God and his Kingdom through stories called Parables. The parables always have a message and sometimes it's very hard to enter or understand a parable. Sometimes, we really have to think about it for a long time before we can understand the message. The parable he tells us in the gospel reading today is about recognizing signs. Jesus reminds us that we all see signs if things about to happen. When we see the leaves growing on the trees, we know it is getting close to summertime. Jesus wants us to understand that when he returns, we will know because there will be signs, and when we see them we will know that Jesus is coming, just as we know when the leaves are green, it's summer, when they fall off the trees it is autumn, we will understand when we see the signs that Jesus is coming. Prayer Thank you for all your blessings God, and for sending your Son Jesus Christ to help us understand all about you! Amen COFFEE HOUR Following on from the discussion at Parish Council, for an experimental period from Sunday, December 6 into the New Year, Coffee Hour after High Mass will take place in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. There will be opportunity for review at Parish Council in January. Fr. Kevin

RELATIONSHIPS & FELLOWSHIPS WHITE RIBBON CAMPAIGN The Mothers’ Union is again promoting the White Ribbon Campaign which is known throughout the world as the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, November 25 to December 10. November 25 is the International Day Against Violence Against Women and December 10 the International Human Rights Day. Throughout the world, women and girls are subject to many different forms of violence and abuse because of their gender throughout their lives. These include physical, emotional, sexual and psychological abuse, forced prostitution, abortion and child marriage, human trafficking, female infanticide and honorbased killing. Violence affects women and girls regardless of age, race, religion, class, sexuality and marital status and often occurs within the home. Mothers’ Union is inviting everyone to wear a white ribbon during the sixteen days to bring awareness to these injustices. The ribbons will be available on Sunday, November 22, in the Narthex. SOCKS FOR MISSION TO SEAFARERS Mission to Seafarers offers gifts to visiting seafarers during the Christmas season. Anglican churches throughout the Diocese collect warm socks as a contribution to these gifts. You are invited to join us in with a donation. Socks should contain some wool, and may be left in Helen`s cupboard, or given to any member of the Women`s Guild who will be seasonally wrapping all socks donated from around the Diocese on Friday December 4 at the Mission to Seafarers house on the waterfront. Rides available at the church after 9 am, with work starting at 9:30 am. Good fellowship and snacks are guaranteed. This is a great opportunity to visit this heritage building, and learn about the work of the Mission, which was started in Vancouver by Father Cooper of our Parish.

COMMEMORATION Saint Andrew the Apostle November 30 The Gospels say that Andrew was a fisherman and the brother of Peter, and his name always appears near the top in the lists of the twelve apostles. The Fourth Gospel pairs him with Philip in answering the Lord’s questions at the feeding of the five thousand and later in acting as an intermediary for some pagans who wished to meet Jesus. But that is all: Andrew’s story is no sooner begun, than it is swallowed up in the greater story of Jesus. The people of the Church later invented legends about Andrew, to give their memory more than just a name to honour and more than just a single episode to recount. These legends gave Andrew exotic adventures travelling and preaching in many different places until he was martyred, crucified on a cross in the form of an “X.” Some of these legends may indeed be true, but biographical truth is not their purpose or function. So we come back to the gospels and their brief account of Andrew’s calling. Andrew was a Galilean fisherman minding his own business, mending his own nets, when along came Jesus. The Lord called him, and Andrew got up and walked — he walked into the story of Jesus. From that moment on, his life was no longer his own; Andrew had no other story but the story of Jesus, the story that is told about Jesus, the story that Jesus himself tells. And that is how we honour the memory of the apostle named Andrew: by remembering his name as we tell the story of Jesus, the One who called both Andrew and us into the story of salvation. COMMEMORATION St. Francis Xavier December 3 Francis Xavier, a Jesuit priest, left Europe in 1542 and brought the gospel of Christ to the outcasts of India, the cities of southeast Asia, and the warrior-society of Japan. Francis was one of the first seven members of the Society of Jesus, which was founded to advance the Catholic CounterReformation. But the Jesuits looked beyond Europe and hoped to win the whole world for the Church. That is why Francis boarded a ship and sailed around the Horn of Africa to the Portuguese colony of Goa on the coast of India. With a small group of followers and even smaller resources, he began his apostolate in southern India, extended it to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), and then moved on to Malacca, Vietnam, and Malaysia, until he reached Japan. He died in 1552, alone on an island off the coast of China, while trying to smuggle himself into the Chinese empire. Francis had trouble learning new languages and usually had to rely on an interpreter whenever he preached. But words are not the only way of communicating the truth, and his personal holiness made a great impression on the various peoples he encountered. More importantly, Francis understood that the gospel is meant first of all for the poor of the earth. So, he chose to do most of his apostolic work among the outcasts and untouchables of every culture he visited. Such a quality made him like the first apostles — and, like them, he loved not his own life unto death, but gave himself wholly to the task of proclaiming the riches of the knowledge and worship of Christ.
