You can keep an avocado from turning brown by storing it with a sliced/cut raw onion? You can cut all your cherry tomatoes at once? This trick allows you to cut all your cherry tomatoes like a ninja. You need two fairly shallow dinner plates. (Do ninjas cut a lot of cherry tomatoes?) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Wash tomatoes. Place on a dinner plate. Place another plate on top, upside down. Hold firm enough to hold things in place. (willy nilly = bandaids) Slice a large, sharp knife through the opening between the plates. *Ninja tomatoes * (Don’t use a sword. Not recommended.)

4 Ways to Use Ice Cube Trays Get yourself a few silicone ice cube trays and go nuts! • Use the long, skinny ones to freeze berries and stir your bubbly with it. • Use the large cited ones to freeze your herbs in oil or water and add to cooking for fresh-frozen herbs all year round without waste! You can get more juice from citrus if you microwave it for 10 seconds first? Then place it between the handles of a set of tongs and squeeze!
• Use the little round ones to freeze lemon and mint in water or lemonade to add toy your tea or iced tea. • Freeze some coffee to make iced coffee that’s not watered down!

This tender, flaky fish is an attention-grabber for its flavor, sustainability, and health benefits. And it is fun to say: bar-uh-muhn-dee! The 32nd Annual Scarecrow Fest In St. Charles OCTOBER 6-8, 2017 The 32nd annual Scarecrow Fest, presented by ComEd – cited once again as one of Country Living Magazine’s top Fall Fests for 2017 - will take place on October 6th–8th in downtown St. Charles. All of the signature events that make this Fest so unique and memorable will be present, including a full roster of live entertainment and returning popular headliner bands. New to the Fest this year are two groundbreaking attractions: The Greater St. Charles Farm Tour, featuring access to the features and activities of SIX working Farms here in the Greater St. Charles service area: Historic Corron Farm, Garfield Farm Museum, Norton Farm, Primrose Farm, St. Charles Farm and The Royal Lusitano. Also new, the “All Wheels In” Family Bike Ride Extravaganza, starting at local business Sammy’s Bikes, 602 S. 1st Street. “All Wheels In” features two custom bike ride adventures: The Family Ride – 12-15 miles of scenic trails along the Fox River; and the Farm Ride – a 38 mile cyclist challenge, perusing the city and countryside of the area from St. Charles to Maple Park. Four Zones of activity will once again frame Fest Activity: The Meijer Zone in Lincoln Park – featuring Cars on display from sponsor, Fox Valley Auto Group; the Scarecrow Contest, presented by St. Charles Bank and Trust and featuring 100+ scarecrows on display. This year’s contest includes 6 categories: Mechanical, Mega Scarecrows, Clubs and Not-for-Profits, Family, Individuals and the Greater St. Charles Business Category. And there is

The Pheasant Run Resort Zone features the Greater St. Charles Business category Scarecrow Contest entrees plus the ever popular Windy City Amusements Carnival, which runs October 5-8. $25 wristband specials will be available daily at key times during the Fest. The Gerald Kia of North Aurora Zone features the Fox Valley Ice Arena Challenge and one of two of the beloved Make Your Own Scarecrow stations – a Fest family favorite. And St. Charles’ own Baltria Vintage Auto Gallery will again display part of its classic car inventory at the Fest. The Baltria Vintage Auto Zone will also feature professionally carved pumpkins, Make Your Own Scarecrow, Glowby the Bubbler, a Petting Zoo, Fest T-Shirts on sale by local business Button Man printing; and photo op stations featuring classic cars, and appearances from Miss America and Chicago Steel Hockey Team’s mascot “Rusty.” Pottawatomie Park will house the ever popular Autumn on the Fox Arts & Crafts Show, with handmade arts and crafts from more than 150 exhibitors.
Reyes will create a custom three-course dinner in “Farm to Table” style, featuring food from local fields. As always, admission and parking are free. Pumpkin Weekends throughout October at Blackberry Farm Blackberry Farm will celebrate the fall season throughout the month of October with its popular Pumpkin Weekends beginning Saturday, Sept. 30. Each weekend – and Columbus Day (Oct. 9) – Blackberry Farm will be festively decorated in the spirit of pumpkin season. A picnic area will have pumpkins for purchase, and an assortment of decorating materials will be provided. Carousel rides, hay wagon rides, pony rides, paddle boats, Little Farmer’s Junction (6Y & under) and tours on the “Pumpkin Train” are part of each weekend’s festivities, along with the historic museums and interactive farm animal areas. Among the unique attractions is the Victorian Halloween Party that traces back to the origins of Halloween with an event host leading crafts and games. FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / October 2017
Hosted in the Huntoon House, it’s a ghoulish balance of scary and fun. Other popular features include the Corn Crib – similar to a large sandbox, but filled with corn – where children can roll and wriggle, farm style. Also, there’s the famous Adventure Playground, a uniquely innovative play area that incorporates climbing decks, slides, ropes and catwalk-style bridges connecting an array of playhouses on multiple levels – and a 70-foot zip line. Park hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Admission is $7 per person. “All Wheels In” Bike Rides The Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau announces the launch of the “All Wheels In” Bike Rides. Working in collaboration with Sammy’s Bike Shop of St. Charles, The CVB will promote this special event, due to take place on Sunday, October 8, 2017 – as part of the third and final day of the 32nd annual St. Charles, Illinois Scarecrow Fest. The rides will begin at Sammy’s Bike Shop, 602 S 1st Street, beginning at 9:00am. Two rides will be offered: A Family Ride of 12-15 miles along the beautiful Fox River, and a Farm Ride cyclist challenge, featuring 38 miles of gorgeous countryside traveling from St. Charles to Maple Park, Illinois. “All Wheels In” is part of a destination initiative to experience all that St. Charles, Illinois offers, and to seize the quest for health and wellness. The GSCCVB celebrates this new initiative for incoming visitors to “See it, Do it, Live it” in St. Charles, Illinois. The cost to participate is free. Water and ice will be on hand to refresh cyclists at the course turnarounds. All riders will need to sign a waiver before participating. Bike rentals are available for $15 during the event or $20 for a full day rental to enjoy during the Fest. Bike racks will also be on hand at Sammy’s for incoming visitors who need a place to secure their cycle while they enjoy the businesses, events and attractions downtown. The Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau is launching a new autumn tradition in tandem with the Scarecrow Fest called Greater St. Charles Farm Tour. From October 6-8, during length of the Fest, guests can register to visit and experience farm life from the 1800’s, interact with authentic farm livestock, enjoy wagon rides, engage in equestrian theatre and care, and a myriad of other activities. FOUR local area farms are readying their locations to welcome visitors: Historic Corron Farm, 7N761 Corron Rd, St Charles, will offer historical wagon tours, where visitors, accompanied by knowledgeable prairie experts, will hear the story of prairie restoration and other tales of Corron Farm’s past (1835 to present day). House tours, featuring authentic 19th century documents, books, furniture and other household items will also take place. Tours run hourly from 1-4PM for a fee of $5 per person. Garfield Farm Museum, 2N930 Garfield Road, Campton Hills, features a historical walking tour to experience life on this 1840’s farm. Participants engage with docents and tradesmen to hear about the farmyard’s historic barns and see authentic livestock including oxen, chickens, geese, turkeys, pigs, and sheep. A picnic area is available. Tours run hourly from 1-4PM on Saturday and Sunday for a fee of $5 per adult and $3 per child under 13 years. Norton Farm and Produce, 39W369 Route 64, St. Charles, offers traditional harvest activities for adults and children including admission to Norton’s Hollow – a fall season play area designed for children ages 2 – 10. Children navigate the straw maze, crawl through the corn bundle, climb a straw mountain, meet and feed the animals, and other activities. Participants also receive a small pie pumpkin and seasonal gourd. A picnic area is available for dining. Lunches are available in the Village of Campton Hills, and outside food is permitted. Hours are Friday 9AM – 6PM, Saturday 9AM-4PM and Sunday 10AM – 3PM with an admission fee of $5 per person. Lusitano horse, known for the courage to face the bull or jump large fences, as well as the athletic ability to handle the sharp turns and bursts of speed necessary to navigate the most difficult working equitation courses. Visitors will witness demonstrations of this extraordinary breed in a variety of dressage and equestrian theater activities. BatFest Fall Festival in Downtown Batavia BatFest is Batavia’s annual Halloween themed family event attracting over 3,000 ghouls. BatFest includes, downtown Trick-or-Treating, Mothers’ Club Parade, pumpkin bowl, contests BatArt and games for free family fun. Celebrate Naperville’s Heritage at Naper Settlement’s Oktoberfest Experience a weekend full of live music and delicious German food and beer under a large heated tent at Naper Settlement’s annual Oktoberfest on Friday, Oct. 6 from 5 to 10 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7 from 12 to 10 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 8 from 12 to 5 p.m. located at 523 S. Performing for over 20 years together, this Chicago-based band got their start after guitarist, Don Hedeker, decided to fuse his two main influences: the polka standards and the ‘70s punk explosion. As the only polka band in the world with a guitar-based set-up, Hedeker says visitors can expect polka music with a Ramone’s twist. “Polka and punk is really about breaking down barriers, so visitors can expect to have a good time,” said Hedeker. “We were coming to Naper Settlement’s Oktoberfest for several years in a row, so we’re very happy to be coming back.” Visitors will rock out on Saturday beginning with the lively German folk band, Die Musikmeisters Band, followed by the rock and polka hybrid group Freeze FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / October 2017
Dried. The night will finish off with a Chicago favorite, Stache. Known for their unique twist on everything from today’s pop hits to 80s rock anthems, Stache will blow the audience away with their high-energy, authentic musical performance. “We are always trying to surprise our audience,” said Ryan Shoonover, lead vocalist of Stache. “We play anything from 20-30 outdoor festivals every year and Oktoberfest’s are one of our favorites. We just try to play music that people will really enjoy and have a good time with.” Traditional Bavarian Sunday will begin with three-time Grammy nominees, Jimmy’s Bavarians. The band has performed at countless Oktoberfest celebrations through the years in the U.S. and overseas, and never misses the opportunity to perform with their 12-footlong alphorn. The weekend will end with an Oktoberfest favorite, The Happy Wanderers. The Woody’s Buick GMC
children’s area features activities from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday and include Pinot’s Palette, where kids can create their own masterpiece, and PRO Martial Arts who will show kids how to break a board. Naper Settlement’s museum educators will also have old-fashioned amusements for children and lawn games for everyone to play. While your kids play, don’t miss the stein holding competition for the adults. The food and beer is the signature of any Oktoberfest, and Schamberger Bros. is providing quite the variety of beer. Hofbrau Oktoberfest and Spaten Oktoberfest are the traditional German beers on tap. This October, Blue Goose Market and other local community leaders and businesses have come together to celebrate MOMtober with events throughout the month. The third annual MOMtober officially begins with the kick-off party, Mom’s Night Out, on Thursday, October 5 from 6 to 9 PM at Blue Goose Market located at 300 South Second Street in St. Charles. The event features: product and service samplings from participating MOMtober businesses, wine tastings, and food samples. NEW DOWNTOWN FESTIVAL BRINGS VINTAGE CIRCUS FUN Octo Street Fest is a new fall festival on Saturday, Oct. 14 in downtown Aurora. Held behind New York Street’s Restaurant Row on Pinney Street, Octo Street Fest brings artists, musicians, and street performers together for an afternoon of wonder. The new festival is unique and one-of-a-kind to downtown Aurora. It features the mystical, the magical, and the absurd. There won’t be any animals, but human performers will entertain with hula hoops, card readings, fire dance, and more. “Aurora Downtown’s events committee wanted to create a new event that paired up with a Saturday in fall and could really show off a other side of our arts scene. It’s full of wonder. It’s magical. It’s dark. It’s absurd and mystical. Elgin Prepares for Signature Halloween Event
“Nightmare on Chicago Street” For the seventh year, Elgin’s Zombie Defense Initiative (ZDI) team will transform downtown Elgin into a “Safe Zone” to defend against the zombie outbreak. Nightmare on Chicago Street takes place on Saturday, October 21, from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. The “Safe Zone” encompasses Chicago Street, Spring Street, Grove Avenue and DuPage Court. The event provides vendors, food, live music, entertainment, a freak show, thunderdome and much more for attendees to enjoy. This year’s event features three stages of live music covering several generations of sound. Acts include Hairbangers Ball, 97Nine, Sushi Roll, Too White Crew, The Shagadelics, Sixteen Candles as well as several DJ sets. The event is sure to be a palette pleaser with an Absinthe Parlor, a hookah lounge, beer and liquor vendors, and several food vendors. Nightmare on Chicago Street also

Paul Lencioni
In 2012, Paul Lencioni, great-grandson of Annunciata (Nancy) Lencioni, took the reins of the family business to navigate the dynamic terrain of the modern grocery marketplace and the increasingly complex demands of today’s savvy consumers. Prior to becoming President and CEO of Blue Goose, Paul was the Vice President of Independent Business Development for Eby-Brown, a multi-billion dollar wholesale distributor to the convenience industry. Paul is currently the treasurer and executive committee member of the Downtown St. Charles Business Partnership, a Breakfast Rotary Member, on the Board of Directors for the Illinois Food Retailers Association, a member of the Fox River Business Alliance, and plays with the St. Charles Celtics Soccer Club. He previously served as the vice chair of the City of St Charles Planning Commission and has served as a township trustee for the St. Charles Township. To me that is the coolest calling I can imagine. Fox Valley Magazine: Four generations is a lot to live up to, how do you meet and exceed expectations? Paul Lencioni: I don’t think about my circumstance that way. I am grateful for the opportunity to have the lessons that Blue Goose has provided me in my youth direct my passion in leading the Goose today. The expectation is to make a difference in peoples’ lives. You just do it and enjoy it. There isn’t a bar – just a dream. The only real challenge is reaching as many people FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / October 2017
as possible and enroll them – sell them great food and let them see that it was no accident. We are working hard to help people see Blue Goose runs because people who are NUTS about food really want to knock them out. The challenge is getting people to understand. There’s a lot of work that goes into it all – but honestly it doesn’t even seem like work for us – and that’s not just me that’s all of us. Fox Valley Magazine: Today’s retail market is tougher than ever. As an independent grocer what do you find to be the most challenging? Paul Lencioni: There are a lot of voices in today’s grocery market – and in today’s world. It can be hard to pierce through the noise and get people to hear your message – even if it’s a great one that they’d love – because everyone’s attention is stretched so far. Earning people’s trust and appreciation takes a dialogue with more than the soundbites of today’s conversations. But persistence wins

Fox Valley Magazine: Much to the dismay of all involved, a deal couldn’t be reached between the various parties for a Blue Goose Market in Fox Valley Magazine: As the Treasurer and exBatavia. I think we the businesses of St Charles need, every-single-day, to focus on letting our customers know how amazing we think they are, and avoid telling them how amazing we think we are. When we leaders in St Charles have this party jumping down here, great businesses will be fighting for space in St Charles. And we’re moving forward, but there is plenty of room to take it to higher levels of connection and more people to join this party. Fox Valley Magazine: You work long hours you and are highly active in supporting community events. What drives you? Paul Lencioni: I think I have a lot to offer and I’m willing to help. The more good you do the more good there is.

Fox Valley Magazine: When you do get time away from work, how do you like to spend it? Paul Lencioni: I still play soccer which helps me think I’m still young. I spend as much time with my wife and 8 year-old daughter as possible. I love good conversation so any time I can chat someone up or talk to someone who
Paul Lencioni: All business should feel like it’s done on a handshake. Know that you are doing business with people and understand the promises you’re making. There is no such thing as a consumer – business is about doing things for people. That’s one side and the other is to never focus on success, your goals should be based on value. You don’t have any real control over success. Your success is determined by others and what they think of you. However, you can always make sure that what you do has value and merit. There are so many companies today that are focused on being successful without any concept offering anything of value to people.

Fine Line Creative Arts Center Uncommon Threads Sunday October 15 10am – 3pm Q-Center St Charles Uncommon Threads, the annual Art-ToWear runway experience and luncheon presented by Fine Line Creative Arts Center in St. Charles, brings together phenomenal wearable textiles and accessories created by local and national artists. Held at the Q-Center in St Charles, the morning of October 15 will begin very early for the staff, artists and volunteers as they prepare for this amazing and unique event. The Doors open at 10am, when ticket holders can peruse the boutique area, where they will find jewelry, bags, scarfs and hats along with additional clothing items from the runway artists. As the request for artists to participate is made on a

national scale, many items on sale at this event cannot be found anywhere else in the area. Just outside the boutique area is the Fine Line Raffle. This year 60 items are being raffled. All are donations and include hand crafted items from artists, as well as gift cards and Jewelry from local businesses. More information on these items can be found on the Fine Line website or by visiting Fine Line where the items are currently on display. All raffle prizes will be transported to the Q-Center for the day of the show. Raffle tickets can be purchased before the event or on the day of the show. Lunch is a sit down event, served at 12 pm. Last year during lunch guests were treated to a slide show of the prior 29 years (this event is now in its 31st year), which included some very interesting style choices! The slide show will be updated to include some of last year’s items. The runway experience begins at 1pm. This year there will be seven new artists from New Mexico, Kansas, Ohio and Illinois. These artists will join returning artists making a total of 22 artists, whose work will be shown on the runway, each showing 3-5 pieces. All the models are volunteers whose ages range from 17 -70, and it is their enthusiasm coupled with the upbeat music that make this such an entertaining show. The runway show does not have a theme an so one artists work will be completely different in style and color from the work of the next. There is always something for everyone. All the items on the runway are available for purchase directly following the show which means you can take home the piece you love that day, assuming you get to it first! Once the runway show has finished and the raffle numbers have been called, the boutique area re-opens so guests can to take one last look, pick up something that they had been thinking about purchasing; or buy a piece they saw walk the runway. At this time raffle winners are able to collect their prizes. Tickets for this event are $65.00 which includes lunch. Attending Uncommon Threads is a great way to enjoy an amazing and very entertaining event, and support a local not-for-profit organization in its quest to provide classes and support for local and national artists. Kavanagh Gallery presents Colored Pencil Society of America – Painting with Pencils October 20 – November 18, 2017 Founded in 1990, the Colored Pencil Society of America currently has 1600 member and 25 district chapters. The purpose of the organization is to promote the stature and awareness of colored pencil as a fine art medium and serve as a forum for the education, communication and recognition of colored pencil artists. The pieces in this exhibit are by District Chapter 103. This chapter founded in 1993 is now one of the largest in the organization with artists from Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri and Texas. Opening reception for this incredible exhibit is on October 20th 6 pm – 8 pm and is free and open to the public, so why not stop out an meet these amazing artists.
Fine Line Lectures Fine is offering a series of free lectures by local artists. The series, which began last month, continues on October 11th with a talk by artist Carrie Carlson. Carrie received her BA in Biology and Art at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. She earned an MFA in Scientific Illustration from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and is currently pursuing an MA in Printmaking at Governors State University. Since 2001, Carrie has taught science (biology, biomedical sciences, horticulture) and art (drawing, painting, design) in the south suburbs of Chicago. She is a Quantum Learning Facilitator, National Board for Professional Teaching Standards candidate, and active member of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. Her background includes experience in providing audit and consulting services, and she is the Great Lakes Region Leader for RSM’s First Choice Advisor Program. She is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Illinois CPA Society. Amy Weishaar is an Associate Developer with Ryan Companies Us, Inc. Ms. Weishaar has more than 20 years of professional experience, half of which have been with Ryan Companies. As an Associate Developer, Ms. Weishaar delivers senior living and multi-family communities that include independent living, assisted living, memory care, market-rate and affordable housing. In her role as an Associate Developer for Ryan Companies, Ms. Weishaar conducts and analyzes market research to determine site feasibility, performing due diligence pre- and post-construction, ensuring all required conditions are met in order to
close a real estate transaction for release to construction, and managing compliance reporting and project-related documentation requirements. Ms. Weishaar earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Illinois University, where she majored in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Ms. Weishaar and her husband Chris live in St. Charles. Now in its 67th season, the Elgin Symphony Orchestra (ESO) offers programming unmatched for an entertaining, informative and relaxing cultural experience.
