Hacks & Kitchen Skills COOKING CAN BE FUN, I PROMISE BY SARA SNELLING

‌ DID YOU KNOW...

You can keep an avocado from turning brown by storing it with a sliced/cut raw onion? You can cut all your cherry tomatoes at once? This trick allows you to cut all your cherry tomatoes like a ninja. You need two fairly shallow dinner plates. (Do ninjas cut a lot of cherry tomatoes?) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Wash tomatoes. Place on a dinner plate. Place another plate on top, upside down. Hold firm enough to hold things in place. (willy nilly = bandaids) Slice a large, sharp knife through the opening between the plates. *Ninja tomatoes * (Don’t use a sword. Not recommended.)

4 Ways to Use Ice Cube Trays Get yourself a few silicone ice cube trays and go nuts! • Use the long, skinny ones to freeze berries and stir your bubbly with it. • Use the large cited ones to freeze your herbs in oil or water and add to cooking for fresh-frozen herbs all year round without waste! You can get more juice from citrus if you microwave it for 10 seconds first? Then place it between the handles of a set of tongs and squeeze!

• Use the little round ones to freeze lemon and mint in water or lemonade to add toy your tea or iced tea. • Freeze some coffee to make iced coffee that’s not watered down!

You can keep brown sugar soft by storing it with marshmallows?? Bell peppers with 4 bumps are female, and are sweeter? ...And more stable.

Speaking of Bell Peppers… Crack an egg right into a bell pepper ring over med/low heat and voila! Breakfast with some fiber and vitamin C.

Make Your Phone Kitchen Friendly Using a recipe online while cooking? Phones carry bacteria and water damage can really screw them up. Wipe your phone down with a cotton pad and some rubbing alcohol and cover with plastic wrap if you want to access recipes while cooking. Keeps it clean and dry!

Pan Roasted Barramundi

This tender, flaky fish is an attention-grabber for its flavor, sustainability, and health benefits. And it is fun to say: bar-uh-muhn-dee! Our Barramundi is pan roasted and dressed in Thai lemongrass sauce, which is packed with a dazzling balance of exotic flavors, made fresh in our kitchen. We start by sautéing garlic, ginger, and massaman curry paste. This paste is comprised of toasted and ground spices and finely chopped herbs such as coriander, lemongrass, Thai ginger (galangal), and kaffir lime. Aromatics fill the kitchen as we add coconut milk for gorgeous creamy texture and finish the sauce with a squeeze of lemon and a few dashes of fish sauce. Now you know the secret: fish sauce is akin to adding salt to season a dish, but there is magic in fish sauce! It adds rich complexity when balanced with citrus and is the quintessential seasoning agent in all of Southeast Asian cooking. The fish is served with blistered green beans, grape tomatoes and ginger rice. An excellent pairing for Cooper’s Hawk Unoaked Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc. Performing for over 20 years together, this Chicago-based band got their start after guitarist, Don Hedeker, decided to fuse his two main influences: the polka standards and the ‘70s punk explosion. As the only polka band in the world with a guitar-based set-up, Hedeker says visitors can expect polka music with a Ramone’s twist. “Polka and punk is really about breaking down barriers, so visitors can expect to have a good time,” said Hedeker. “We were coming to Naper Settlement’s Oktoberfest for several years in a row, so we’re very happy to be coming back.” Visitors will rock out on Saturday beginning with the lively German folk band, Die Musikmeisters Band, followed by the rock and polka hybrid group Freeze FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / October 2017

Dried. The night will finish off with a Chicago favorite, Stache. Known for their unique twist on everything from today’s pop hits to 80s rock anthems, Stache will blow the audience away with their high-energy, authentic musical performance. “We are always trying to surprise our audience,” said Ryan Shoonover, lead vocalist of Stache. “We play anything from 20-30 outdoor festivals every year and Oktoberfest’s are one of our favorites. We just try to play music that people will really enjoy and have a good time with.” Traditional Bavarian Sunday will begin with three-time Grammy nominees, Jimmy’s Bavarians. The band has performed at countless Oktoberfest celebrations through the years in the U.S. and overseas, and never misses the opportunity to perform with their 12-footlong alphorn. The weekend will end with an Oktoberfest favorite, The Happy Wanderers. The Woody’s Buick GMC

children’s area features activities from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday and include Pinot’s Palette, where kids can create their own masterpiece, and PRO Martial Arts who will show kids how to break a board. Naper Settlement’s museum educators will also have old-fashioned amusements for children and lawn games for everyone to play. While your kids play, don’t miss the stein holding competition for the adults. The food and beer is the signature of any Oktoberfest, and Schamberger Bros. is providing quite the variety of beer. Hofbrau Oktoberfest and Spaten Oktoberfest are the traditional German beers on tap. The American craft beer scene is represented with Bell’s Octoberfest; and the beer lineup finishes with the sweet and unique German Schofferhofer Grapefruit. There will also be a wine selection boasting a delicious Riesling, and other varietals from Rodney Strong Vineyards. Food will consist of traditional German fare including bratwurst, sauerkraut and more by MyChef Catering, handmade pretzels by DeEtta’s Bakery and bundtlets by Nothing Bundt Cake. “This year’s event falls early in October and will be the perfect way to end the outdoor party season,” said John Schamberger, owner of Schamberger Bros., Inc. “Our beer offerings will each bring a different flavor and finish, and will satisfy all of our visitors attending the weekend-long event. Actor, Writer, Comedian Denis Leary is Set for a Visit to Naperville’s Wentz Concert Hall Anderson’s Bookshop, Naperville, presents well known actor, writer and comedian Denis Leary for a special evening discussing his new book, Why We Don’t Suck. His starring role on “Rescue Me,” a TV show he created, earned him accolades as a dramatic actor, and led to a charity he championed, “Fund for New York’s Bravest” (to benefit 9/11 firefighter families). But Leary’s talents span many genres, including his voice work for the popular children’s film franchise, “Ice Age.” On November 1, Leary will share his new book, Why We Don’t Suck, at a special Anderson’s Bookshop event at Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave, on the campus of North Central College in Naperville. This moderated conversation featuring Leary will take place at 7:00 p.m. and be followed by a Q & A segment. Ticketholders will get a pre-signed book at this program. Tickets are required and exclusively available at DenisLearyAndersons. FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / October 2017

brownpapertickets.com. This program is presented by Anderson’s Bookshop, 123 W. Jefferson Ave. in downtown Naperville, (630) 355-2665. Details and a calendar of future events may be found at www.andersonsbookshop.com. About the Book: From the author of the bestselling Why We Suck comes a searing comic look at these divisive times, skewering liberals and conservatives alike with a signature dose of sarcasm and common sense. Denis Leary refutes the current highly partisan Right Wing Nutjob versus Left Wing Snowflake approach to American politics—where you’re either one or the other, with no gray areas in between. Leading a new protest movement called Gray Lives Matter, he takes equal opportunity aim at the screaming heads we see arguing every night on CNN (the Clinton News Network) and Fox’s Fair and Balanced Republican Report. With a devoted mission to Make America Laugh Again, Leary tackles the topics we all hold close to our American hearts: Twitter, Instagram, and the seemingly endless search for fame and diet vodka. In a country so gluten-free that a box of jelly donuts is now a bigger threat than Vladimir F**king Putin—where college kids are more afraid of Ann Coulter than HIV—it’s time for someone to stand up and stop the insanity. Or at least defend the double cheeseburger. With a side order of free porn. Leary is that guy. He’ll answer such burning questions as: when will Hillary run out of pantsuits? And why wasn’t her campaign motto Hey America—It’s My F**king Turn! As Leary says in the book “Trump’s election gave me faith that even I could be president. Look at his track record: canceled TV show, thin skin, angry tweets and an attractive wife. According to that formula, I’m one bad combover away from living in The White House.” We’re all in this together and Denis Leary is

here to remind us what makes America #7 on the list of Best Countries To Live In— which may sound bad, but means at least we still make the playoffs. About the Author: Denis Leary is a five-time loser at the Emmy awards. And the Golden Globes. He has lost in both the drama and comedy categories. In leading and supporting roles. Not to mention writing. Leary hopes to one day be nominated for—and more than likely not win—an Oscar, a Grammy, and a Tony Award. His first literary foray Why We Suck: A Feel Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid was a New York Times bestseller, but not nominated for The National Book Award. In his long and storied entertainment career, Leary has also never won The Stanley Cup, The Nobel Peace Prize, or an argument with his wife. Denis Leary’s upcoming visit is part of Anderson’s Bookshops’ calendar of special author events. Anderson’s Bookshops specialize in book sales, author events, book signings, and building a sense of community, learning and fun. The store has been helping Naperville readers for six generations. Additional locations include Downers Grove, at 5112 Main Street (630)-963-2665 and La Grange, at 26 S. La Grange Rd. (708) 582-6353. A toy shop, Anderson’s Toyshop, at 111 W. Jefferson Ave., in Naperville, opened last year. Key to Anderson’s success has been special author events, like the November 1 program with Denis Leary.

NEW DOWNTOWN FESTIVAL BRINGS VINTAGE CIRCUS FUN Octo Street Fest is a new fall festival on Saturday, Oct. 14 in downtown Aurora. Held behind New York Street’s Restaurant Row on Pinney Street, Octo Street Fest brings artists, musicians, and street performers together for an afternoon of wonder. The new festival is unique and one-of-a-kind to downtown Aurora. It features the mystical, the magical, and the absurd. There won’t be any animals, but human performers will entertain with hula hoops, card readings, fire dance, and more. “Aurora Downtown’s events committee wanted to create a new event that paired up with a Saturday in fall and could really show off a other side of our arts scene. It’s full of wonder. It’s magical. It’s dark. It’s absurd and mystical. Mostly, it’s entertaining and entirely downtown Aurora,” said Marissa Amoni, events and community outreach direcFOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / October 2017

tor for Aurora Downtown. Octo Street Fest will also showcase the restaurants and businesses along Restaurant Row, including Basement of the Dead, Endiro Coffee, Ballydoyle, Gillerson’s Grubbery, and others. Local artist Josh Schultz designed the event poster, which features an octopus wearing a top hat and holding a wand.

Octo Street Fest is from 2 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14 on Pinney Street in downtown Aurora. Octo Street Fest is brought to you by Aurora Downtown, a nonprofit group of downtown business and property owners located in SSA #One in Aurora, Ill. For more information, visit www.auroradowntown.org.

“Schultz came up with the octopus idea, and we liked what an octopus represents. It’s not only a play on words with it being a festival in October, but an octopus could be doing so many things with those eight arms. In downtown Aurora, we’re doing a lot with arts and culture, so it seemed to be a great fit,” Amoni said. A dozen artists with a darker aesthetic are setting up along artist row, curated by Teresa Fiehn. Music by Brian Kovacs at 2 p.m., Luis and I at 4 p.m., and The Peachtree at 6 p.m. Katiepillar Performance Art performs throughout the day with a fire dance performance at 5 p.m. Gillerson’s Grubbery is hosting a beer tent, and Ballydoyle will have its Irish Rover serving 43 West Galena Boulevard, Aurora, Illinois 60506 | (630) 674-2099 bratwursts and more. Interview with Businessman and Community Activist

Paul Lencioni

In 2012, Paul Lencioni, great-grandson of Annunciata (Nancy) Lencioni, took the reins of the family business to navigate the dynamic terrain of the modern grocery marketplace and the increasingly complex demands of today’s savvy consumers. Prior to becoming President and CEO of Blue Goose, Paul was the Vice President of Independent Business Development for Eby-Brown, a multi-billion dollar wholesale distributor to the convenience industry. Paul is currently the treasurer and executive committee member of the Downtown St. Charles Business Partnership, a Breakfast Rotary Member, on the Board of Directors for the Illinois Food Retailers Association, a member of the Fox River Business Alliance, and plays with the St. Charles Celtics Soccer Club. He previously served as the vice chair of the City of St Charles Planning Commission and has served as a township trustee for the St. Charles Township. Blue Goose Market is the oldest family owned-and-operated retail business in St. Charles and has been “Feeding Your Family Well” for 89 years. Renowned regionally for its meat department, locally-sourced produce, and on-site bakery, it also features homemade recipes made daily by classically trained inhouse chefs. FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / October 2017

Fox Valley Magazine: Why did you decide to leave Eby-Brown and take over leadership at the Blue Goose Market? Paul Lencioni: I left Eby because leading Blue Goose is my dream job! I love St Charles so I love working local and Blue Goose is the embodiment of everything I believe in, “Do great things for the people around you.” Leading Blue Goose into the next era of relevance will take a artful combination of savvy technical skill, the ability to connect with people in our community at a very personal level to earn their trust and attention and elevate their expectations for what shopping at a grocery store can be (something that day to day isn’t often exciting or fun for people), and create a feeling within this organization that each person here working beside me has the opportunity to achieve real greatness every day.

foxvalleymagazine.com

Page 45

It takes heroes to do honest, fundamental work that others may not notice and inspire each person to elevate their concepts and effort - working in a local grocery store which outsiders could see as mundane - into a bright and artful exhibition of social connection, immaculate experiences, and most importantly down-right killer food. To me that is the coolest calling I can imagine. Fox Valley Magazine: Four generations is a lot to live up to, how do you meet and exceed expectations? Paul Lencioni: I don’t think about my circumstance that way. I am grateful for the opportunity to have the lessons that Blue Goose has provided me in my youth direct my passion in leading the Goose today. The expectation is to make a difference in peoples’ lives. You just do it and enjoy it. There isn’t a bar – just a dream. The only real challenge is reaching as many people FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / October 2017

as possible and enroll them – sell them great food and let them see that it was no accident. We are working hard to help people see Blue Goose runs because people who are NUTS about food really want to knock them out. The challenge is getting people to understand. There’s a lot of work that goes into it all – but honestly it doesn’t even seem like work for us – and that’s not just me that’s all of us. Fox Valley Magazine: Today’s retail market is tougher than ever. As an independent grocer what do you find to be the most challenging? Paul Lencioni: There are a lot of voices in today’s grocery market – and in today’s world. It can be hard to pierce through the noise and get people to hear your message – even if it’s a great one that they’d love – because everyone’s attention is stretched so far. Earning people’s trust and appreciation takes a dialogue with more than the soundbites of today’s conversations. But persistence wins

when you really have something to say.

ally well in the right second spot wherever that might be. There are some really good communities around us that I’m getting to know so I’m confident we’ll find the right next step.

Fox Valley Magazine: Much to the dismay of all involved, a deal couldn’t be reached between the various parties for a Blue Goose Market in Fox Valley Magazine: As the Treasurer and exBatavia. Are you considering other sites for a ecutive committee member for the Downtown second Blue Goose Market location? St. Charles Partnership, with the high Illinois tax rates and budget crisis how difficult is it mainPaul Lencioni: Yes, however I’m looking for tain and boost economic vitality for the downthe right spot in the right community. What town area? Blue Goose does is about people. Batavia is a cool town with really good people so that part worked very well. But to be a sharp business Paul Lencioni: That is a question which has unlimited reasonable perspectives. I don’t claim requires the technical side to be right too. I started my career in public accounting and I to have the answer but I will share my view. All cities in Illinois are saddled with the same have a discipline for keeping to dreams which obstacles so it’s not harder for St Charles than are rooted in practical business principles – that is always the foundation of success. I think any other city. I have the same perspective for Blue Goose has a lot to share and we will do re- Downtown St Charles as I have for Blue Goose – throw a great party, invite everyone! If we can increase the relationships between the businesses in St Charles and our residents there’s no limit to the success we can achieve. But, it starts with friendships, offering value, and connecting. There are a lot of cool businesses down here. But, have we done everything we can to inspire the people of St Charles to see our value? We have a really good start but there is a lot more we can do. I think we the businesses of St Charles need, every-single-day, to focus on letting our customers know how amazing we think they are, and avoid telling them how amazing we think we are. When we leaders in St Charles have this party jumping down here, great businesses will be fighting for space in St Charles. And we’re moving forward, but there is plenty of room to take it to higher levels of connection and more people to join this party. Fox Valley Magazine: You work long hours you and are highly active in supporting community events. What drives you? Paul Lencioni: I think I have a lot to offer and I’m willing to help. The more good you do the more good there is.

FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / October 2017

Fox Valley Magazine: What causes are you most passionate about it?

has unique ideas or perspectives I’m in.

Paul Lencioni: People! My cause is us. I want to help people believe and know that what they do MATTERS! I do a lot to help kids and young people – that’s where my heart is. Formally I work with many of our local philanthropic organizations. But I always spend extra time with young people who are trying to learn how to believe in themselves and make a difference in the world and make our world better for all of us.

Fox Valley Magazine: What’s the best business advice you can offer someone?

Fox Valley Magazine: When you do get time away from work, how do you like to spend it? Paul Lencioni: I still play soccer which helps me think I’m still young. I spend as much time with my wife and 8 year-old daughter as possible. I love good conversation so any time I can chat someone up or talk to someone who

Paul Lencioni: All business should feel like it’s done on a handshake. Know that you are doing business with people and understand the promises you’re making. There is no such thing as a consumer – business is about doing things for people. That’s one side and the other is to never focus on success, your goals should be based on value. You don’t have any real control over success. Your success is determined by others and what they think of you. However, you can always make sure that what you do has value and merit. There are so many companies today that are focused on being successful without any concept offering anything of value to people.

national scale, many items on sale at this event cannot be found anywhere else in the area. Just outside the boutique area is the Fine Line Raffle. This year 60 items are being raffled. All are donations and include hand crafted items from artists, as well as gift cards and Jewelry from local businesses. More information on these items can be found on the Fine Line website or by visiting Fine Line where the items are currently on display. All raffle prizes will be transported to the Q-Center for the day of the show. Raffle tickets can be purchased before the event or on the day of the show. Lunch is a sit down event, served at 12 pm. Last year during lunch guests were treated to a slide show of the prior 29 years (this event is now in its 31st year), which included some very interesting style choices! The slide show will be updated to include some of last year’s items. The runway experience begins at 1pm. This year there will be seven new artists from New Mexico, Kansas, Ohio and Illinois. These artists will join returning artists making a total of 22 artists, whose work will be shown on the runway, each showing 3-5 pieces. All the models are volunteers whose ages range from 17 -70, and it is their enthusiasm coupled with the upbeat music that make this such an entertaining show. The runway show does not have a theme an so one artists work will be completely different in style and color from the work of the next. There is always something for everyone. All the items on the runway are available for purchase directly following the show which means you can take home the piece you love that day, assuming you get to it first! Once the runway show has finished and the raffle numbers have been called, the boutique area re-opens so guests can to take one last look, pick up something that they had been thinking about purchasing; or buy a piece they saw walk the runway. At this time raffle winners are able to collect their prizes. Tickets for this event are $65.00 which includes lunch. Attending Uncommon Threads is a great way to enjoy an amazing and very entertaining event, and support a local not-for-profit organization in its quest to provide classes and support for local and national artists. The ESO has won Illinois Professional Orchestra of the Year an unprecedented four times – in 1988, 1999, 2005 and 2016. The ESO strives to create an enjoyable entertainment experience that goes beyond the magnificent music performed by some of the best musicians in the region. There is accessible, free parking around the Hemmens Cultural Center and valet service available. Before concerts, area musicians often perform in the lobby, and patrons can buy drinks at the bar and purchase gifts at the Elgin Symphony League Boutique. Pre-concert chats are given by Music Director Andrew Grams, guest artists and others one hour before most performances, and Saturday night patrons are invited after concerts to Mingle with the Musicians at area restaurants. In addition, free Listeners Club discussions presented by music historian Jim Kendros are offered in Geneva and Elgin on Wednesdays before ESO Classics Series concert weekends. Flex passes are available for purchase so that you can choose your concerts at a later date based on your own schedule. And if a patron can’t make a concert, the ESO offers free exchanges to subscribers and to single ticket buyers for a small fee. The Elgin Symphony Orchestra is a world-class orchestra providing quality musical explorations that are entertaining, hassle-free and conveniently located close to home in the western suburbs.
