Creamy Roasted Tomato Basil Soup (*dairy free) BY SARA SNELLING OF ALL ON THE TABLE

Here’s a great way to use those garden tomatoes that are starting to grow like crazy! (And some herbs too!) The humble potato is what thickens this soup, makes it ‘creamy’ and compliments the tomato flavor nicely. (You can use thickened cream if you wish! About 1/2 – 3/4 cup for the whole pot.)

What You Need

• 2 1/2 lbs Roma tomatoes, halved • 1 1/4 lbs Grape (or Cherry) tomatoes, halved • 8 whole cloves garlic

FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019

• • • • • • • •

3 tablespoons olive oil Salt and black pepper 1 large yellow onion, chopped roasted red pepper, deseeded (~1/4 C) 2 Lg red potatoes, diced 3 tablespoons tomato paste 4 cups vegetable broth 2 cups lightly packed fresh basil leaves chiffonade

What You Do • Slice the tomatoes in half, and roast the tomatoes and garlic with salt and pepper for about 30-45 minutes at 450 degrees (until they start to break downing the skin starts to come away). • (While those tomatoes are roasting) Sauté the potato with diced onion until the onion is transparent and the potatoes are beginning to crisp up- this adds even more flavor to the soup (while your tomatoes are roasting). • Pour in your broth/stock and simmer the potatoes until they’re soft. • Add the tomatoes (once they’re done); then add the basil, roasted peppers 0 and tomato paste and blitz with an immersion blender, add desired spices and viola! AMAZING SOUP!

Want fresh/fresh-frozen herbs all year long? Here’s a great tip for freezing them so they’re fresh and ready-to-use all year ‘round:

tly- try not to crush them (a salad spinner is great for this). Roll them in paper towel or lay them out a bit to dry. Lay them out on a cookie sheet and freeze. Once frozen, put them in a zip-sealed freezer bag and label and date them.

Method 2- For herb cubes Rinse herbs (see above), and

A. Lay leaves flat in a stack and roll them up into a tube, slicing them once rolled. Add ribbons to water/brothor... B. Puree the leaves in a blender/food processor, adding water/broth as needed, until a thick paste is formedThen add (either) mixture to silicone ice cube trays. Freeze. Once frozen, put the cubes in a labeled, dated zip-seal freezer bag. Toss into your favorite smoothie or sauce and enjoy!

PESTO RECIPE

• 2 cups fresh basil leaves, packed (can sub half the basil leaves with baby spinach) • 1/2 cup freshly grated Romano or Parmesan-Reggiano cheese (about 2 ounces) • 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil. • 1/3 cup pine nuts (can sub chopped walnuts) • 3 garlic cloves, minced (about 3 teaspoons)

Pulse pine nuts until ‘powdered’. Add the rest, puree and enjoy!

What You Need

-Large or Jumbo silicone ice-cube trays -water and/or broth of your choice -fresh herbs

Method 1- For bulk frozen herbs

Once the herbs are picked, rinse them genFoxValleyMagazine.com

NEW to the event this year is a Kick-Off Party co-hosted by the St Charles Arts Council and St. Charles History Museum at the Museum on Thursday, September 5 from 5-7 pm, the evening prior to ArtsFest. The general public and participating venues are invited to attend to help celebrate the arts, connect and socialize with other art-goers, and learn about the programs and events that will be offered as part of ArtsFest. The Party will also be the official reception for “Synapses 4: community” a site-specific installation by local artist Rita Grendze. Grendze has been developing a body of work from her home studio that explores pathways and systems through the medium of woven, three-dimensional drawings. This next iteration in the “Synapse” series asks: what are the pathways, the systems, that foster a true community? Back from last year are the ArtsFest Gallery Crawl and Poetry Crawl. The Poetry Crawl features poems chosen to be displayed in businesses throughout downtown St. Charles, including Breadsmith, The Diamondaire, FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019

Entrepreneurs Rock Their Work/ Life Balance in 3 Easy Steps BY ANN MARIE GUENTHER, OWNER OF THAT GIRL ORGANIZES “That’s Impossible!” My neighbor accused of me of lying when I told her that I run my own business 8-3 and am an engaged, organized sports mom in my off time (without a cleaning crew or chef to back me up). Pssssst! My secret is to keep my head from spinning is that I have a plan and I stick to it! What’s the big deal about separating work and life? You can integrate both, right? Nope! Poor work/life balance isn’t just bad for your health and relationships, but it destroys your company and your relationships.

FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019

Here are a few steps that help entrepreneurs like me rock it out daily: 1. Boundaries: Set specific limits for yourself (calendar them if necessary). Example-Do NOT destroy boundaries by checking your work email while playing a card game with Jr. More on this below. 2. Maximum productivity: If you want to kick butt at work, be all in when you are working. Turn notifications off, and do not let anyone interrupt your professional time. Did you know it can take 20 minutes to refocus once interrupted? If you are off, be intentional about not thinking about work. Make a list of things to do that are not work related. Have fun listing activities you REALLY want to accomplish! 3. Screen time: Put down your freaking phone already! Don’t let it define you. Should your loved ones really have to

compete for your attention? Life is taking place outside of your Pinterest page. The most important people in your life are right in front of you. Pay attention! Are you addicted to work or the feeling of being needed? Let me ask you this: Who is going to hold your hand if you are sick in the hospital? Probably not your co-workers. Pay attention to your loved ones, they LOVE YOU! Productivity over business always wins! Relationships are the key to an amazing, fulfilled life. When you are working, money making activities trump everything else; prioritize. Do the right things well, not a ton of busy activities poorly. Hire out silly tasks that a 12 year old can do. Don’t waste time there! If you need help straightening out your desk so that you can be productive, That Girl Organizes is offering her Fox Valley readers $50 this month with the code #FOXY

Bridal Beauty

BY AMI CHRISTIANSON, OWNER OF ONE SALON AND BRIDAL COMPANY First comes love, then comes the engagement, then comes hair, makeup, waxing, spray tanning, manicures, pedicures... Over the past several years One Bridal Co. has worked in creating hundreds of beautiful brides and bridal parties. FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019

how to get the your dream bridal beauty vision translated into your wedding day reality.

#1 Communication is key.

I always love to see your entire wedding look. Sharing your Pinterest boards with your stylist, along with photos of your wedding dress is a great way to communicate your wedding stlye. After all stylist and makeup artists are “artist”, we communicate visually.

#2 When it comes to Hair and Makeup.

Always look for inspiration photos for your stylist that are as close to possible to your hair color, skin tone, and eye color. It is so very important that your are realistic about what style will look best on you. After all, you want to look like your best, self on your wedding day, not someone else. Right?

#3 Be honest with your stylist.

I tell every bride, and client this...”If you are not happy with how something looks, or feels, just tell me. I can tell by

your body language anyway...so it will be a lot more fun working together if you know you can be yourself by being completely comfortable in your communication with me”.

#4. Timing is everything.

Make sure to schedule your bridal trail at least 2 months prior to your wedding. Keeping in mind as busy bridal stylist we are usually out working with other bridal parties on weekends. I always recommend scheduling your trial the day of a special event, such as your bridal shower, or final dress fitting. Give yourself time to enjoy your bridal “look”. Lastly take time to enjoy this process. Planning a wedding can be stressful. Your Bridal Beauty should be, fun, a time for you to relax and feel beautiful. It’s Your Day You’re the “One” Let us make it beautiful. Ami Christianson One Salon and Bridal Co. www.theonesalon.com

“BEATLES VS. STONES” a+e

A Musical Showdown Show to Perform on Elgin Stage

Local high school string quartet joins touring show The Hemmens Cultural Center - September 23 at 7:30 pm For decades, the battle has raged: Beatles or Stones? Through their heyday, fans accused London’s Rolling Stones of stealing ideas -- even entire albums – from their Liverpool counterparts. At the same time, the Beatles secretly envied the Stones’ “bad boy” image and attitude, often copying their style. Both bands are unmistakably great, scoring an array of hits that changed musical history, but only one can be the best. The most infamous rivalry in rock and roll never played out in a public arena until now as Beatles vs. Stones – A Musical Showdown comes to the Hemmens Cultural Center on Monday, September 23 at 7:30 pm. The St. Charles High String Quartet will join the bands on stage for seven songs. The show is appropriate for all ages. Will the Stones be yelling for “Help” to fight the songwriting prowess of Lennon/McCartney? Or will the Beatles cry “Gimme Shelter” from the FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019

relentless sonic barrage of Jagger/Richards classics? While fierce competition fueled the creative output of both bands during the 1960’s, tension between the tribute performers is equally palpable. “The Beatles cornered the rock market on cute suits and fluffy hairdos, but then they stood still on stage and modeled them,” that according to Chris Legrand, who plays a dead ringer for Mick Jagger in both swagger and ability. “The Stones rocked the stage, and worked as hard as the bluesmen they modeled their stage show after, generating the smoldering sexuality that came to be a hallmark of great rock-n-roll acts. The Beatles? Well, they were cute! The Stones were the original punks, outsiders at best. Beatles took tea with the bloody Queen--how rock-n-roll is that?!”

comes down, only one band shall emerge victorious. Whoever wins, the audience is sure to be dazzled by an “electrifying show” (O.C Register), with fantastic music, iconic wardrobe and spot on performances down to the onstage banter, missed notes and flubs heard on the original records. Members of both nationally touring tribute bands, Abbey Road and Satisfaction - The International Rolling Stones Show, have taken great care to recreate the experience of seeing these incredible bands live so as to please casual fans and purists alike. That ‘All You Need is Love’ spirit appears to be lost on Messrs. Legrand and Clarke, who continue trading barbs. “The Beatles wrote Let It Be, but the Stones countered with Let It Bleed!” snarls Chris.

As for the Beatle response? “We got our Sgt. Pepper jackets made a little long so the Stones would have no problem riding our coattails!” Mocks drummer Axel Clarke as Ringo. “That Mick Jagger sure can move! It’s a shame he has to work twice as hard to be half as good!” Would you let your daughter marry a Rolling Stone, or your son come home with a Beatle haircut? This ultimate battle of the bands pits the mop tops against the bad boys. London against Liverpool. Guitars will weep and dice will tumble, and in the end, when the whip FoxValleyMagazine.com

“Listen, mate,” counters Axel. “The song John and Paul gave to the Stones (‘I Wanna Be Your Man’ in 1963) was one they let Ringo sing...that says it all!” Ouch. Beatles or Stones? You decide! St. Charles East High School seniors Ayu Seiya, Lasey Emmerich, Storey Childs and Trudie Childs will join the bands for the songs “Eleanor Rigby,” “A Day in the Life,”’Yesterday,” “Hello Goodbye,” “Hey Jude,” “As Tears Go By,” and “Ruby Tuesday.”

Water Street Studios Celebrates its 10-Year Anniversary Water Street Studios is inviting you to join in the celebration of its landmark 10th Anniversary this September. This nonprofit art center has become the “not-so-hidden” gem of the Fox Valley region over this last decade as it has fueled the careers of thousands of artists and enlightened, entertained and educated hundreds of thousands of people throughout Chicagoland. It all began as a shared vision of a group of interested community members, talented artists, a generous property owner and the City of Batavia in 2007. This vision turned into a plan a year later when the Batavia Artists Association (BAA) and Water Street Studios was founded, construction within an historic Batavia building began and then opened to the public in 2009. Co-founder, Joi Austin (Cuartero) says, “The beauty of Water Street Studios is how it is truly a community-driven cultural organization. Where artists, developers, the City of Batavia and patrons of the arts got together to revitalize an historic building into a space of endless creative possibilities. Helping to create the organization gave me a life experience where I found my career path and I made lifelong friends. Water Street literally shaped my life professionally and personally.” The co-founders all volunteered a significant amount of time and effort, working alongside a growing artist and art-appreciating community, to ensure that Water Street Studios would become the integral cultural hub that it is today. Austin Dempsey, President of Batavia Enterprises Inc., and a foundational supporter of the organization, stated, “Water Street Studios is an amazing cultural asset in the Chicagoland Area. This organization empowers artists to achieve higher levels of success and engagement by providing resources and a facility that inspires creative endeavors. The education of the next generation of American artists is vitally important to a well-rounded society and Water Street Studios is at the front line of making sure that art and personal expression are supported and encouraged in our community.” Today, Water Street Studios provides the region with art classes, artist studios, gallery exhibitions, free programs for under-resourced families and schools, events in our historic venue, and more. Lisa Youngdahl, Resident Artist and Board Member shares, “I moved into Water Street Studios nine years ago, primarily as a space for my graphic design business, but also hoping to further develop as an artist. Over the years I have

FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019

gained confidence and experience from the exposure and encouragement of other artists and the staff, as well as the opportunities offered.” In 2016, Water Street Studios launched their STEAM program, “Ripple Effect,” to serve third through fifth graders in the community by integrating the arts into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) learning. The program is generously support by the Dunham Fund. Lindsay Cochrane, Program Director at the Dunham Fund, shared, “Ripple Effect is an innovative program that partners with schools and libraries throughout community. It transforms STEM learning into STEAM learning by integrating the arts into the academic curriculum, making the arts accessible to students across the Fox Valley Area. The Dunham Fund is proud to be a partner with Water Street Studios to support Ripple Effect, which serves more than 1,000 students throughout our community. Congratulations on celebrating 10 wonderful years!” As a distinctive way to commemorate its10th Anniversary and celebrate its community-focused mission, Water Street Studios is pairing 10 local nonprofits with 10 artists in the community who will create murals for each nonprofit. These murals will be displayed in the alley leading up to the entrance of Water Street’s building. This project, called “Activate the Alley” is generously funded by the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley. Julie Christman, Vice President of Community Involvement & Partnerships at the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley, says, “I love the positive energy that is present every time I attend an event at Water Street Studios. It’s contagious and makes me want to share the experience with others. I am excited to see what the future holds and hope that more individuals and families will visit and experience the same feelings I have whenever I’m there.” This sentiment is also shared by funders, artists, community supporters, board members and others. Stacey Sargent sits on the organization’s Board as Treasurer. She shares, “My family’s first experience with Water Street Studios was through onsite classes and exhibits. Now as a Board member, it is truly amazing to see Water Street Studios fulfilling its mission to bring art and art education into the surrounding communities and partnering with community services to bring art to people where they are.” Richard DeVeau plays many roles at Water Street Studios, including Board member, gallery curator,

artist, gallery committee and Artist’s Collective member. Richard shares an artist perspective on the impact that Water Street Studios has in our community, “Being an artist is a lonely vocation. We work long hours in solitude. Our spouses and friends often don’t quite understand what we do, or why. But being part of a community of other artists here at Water Street has helped offset that for me. We all speak the same language. We understand where each other is coming from. And we support and encourage each other and our work. While creating my art is still a solo endeavor, I’m able to be refreshed at the well of this community.” Water Street Studios uses the arts to connect people to something bigger than themselves. Over its 10year history, the organization has partnered with many businesses, organizations, and individuals to connect them all to the life-changing benefits of the arts. Christine McFadden, a former Vice President of Water Street’s Board of Directors, says, “Water Street Studios plays an incredibly important role in our community. I’m particularly proud of how the organization supports under-resourced children and families through free and low-cost classes, events, and outreach programs. When you support Water Street, you support others… and in the end, isn’t that why we’re all here?” As the organization prepares to celebrate its last 10 years, it is also looking into the future to envision what greater things can be built on its foundation of collaboration over competition. Current Board President Jessica Breugelmans shares, “My hope is that Water Street Studios continues to thrive and grow by serving the needs of our community through the arts. I’m thrilled by the many pARTnerships formed in support of our mission with pARTners like, The Holmstad, Aurora and Batavia Public School Districts, Kane County Jail, and others.” So please join us in celebrating Water Street Studios’ 10-Year Anniversary on September 13, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. The night will feature a silent art auction, special guests, a cash bar, open artist studios, a new art exhibition featuring artist members and invited artists, and more. This event is free, open to the public, and for all ages. Water Street Studios is wheel-chair accessible. Event Details: Friday, September 13, 2019 (6:00-9:00 p.m.) Water Street Studios 160 S. Bates’ Cello Concerto, Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2, Corigliano’s Troubadours Variations for Guitar and Chamber Orchestra, Mahler’s Adagio from Symphony No. 10, Kodály’s Peacock Variations, Telemann’s Concerto for Two Horns and Two Violins and Villa-Lobos’ Concerto for Guitar and Small Orchestra are all receiving their ESO premieres this season. Grams will also conduct a Pops concert - A Night in Old Vienna. Andrew Grams and the ESO will host two (2) of the ESO’s popular, new Inside the Music with Andrew Grams events, lively and informal 90-minute presentations that use musical excerpts to explore famous musical masterworks. Music Director Andrew Grams, a brilliant communicator, leads the discussion, with the Orchestra illustrating points by playing sections of the piece, and then pulling-it all together with a full performance of the work. This season, Inside the Music will

examine Richard Wagner’s monumental dramatic opera cycle, The Ring, and Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 or Jupiter, the last, the longest, and considered by many, the greatest of Mozart’s symphonies. “We crafted a season for you that offers great traditional masterworks, new exciting pieces from composers of this generation, and lesser known treasures that deserve a hearing - all servedup in the casual and informal environment our audience demands,” says Music Director Grams. “At the ESO, was are working to ‘transform the symphony experience.’ Whether that be by me speaking informally from the stage at a concert, by staff working hard to be welcoming, or by creating a more informal concert format, our popular Inside the Music events, which are designed to show newcomers how great orchestral music works its magic on us, we at the ESO are dedicated to creating the highest quality entertainment experience.” The ESO Classics Series contains works by Bach, Bates, Beethoven, Brahms, Bruch, Chopin, Copland, Corigliano, Haydn, Kodály, Mahler, Mozart, Schumann, Smetana, Richard Strauss, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, Telemann, Villa-Lobos & Wagner. Music Director Andrew Grams opens the ESO 2018/19 season on September 15 and 16 with Mason Bates’ Cello Concerto, an ESO premiere featuring the ESO debut of cellist Joshua Roman. The concert also includes Chopin’s Grand Valse Brillante and Stravinsky’s ground-breaking The Firebird Suite (1919). Andrew Grams will also conduct five (5) more ESO concerts: • Concerts on November 3 and 4 hold works by three German titans of classical music - Beethoven, Strauss and Wagner. Andrew Grams conducts the program, which begins with Beethoven’s Fidelio Overture from his only opera, Fidelio, and also includes orchestral excerpts from Wagner’s The Ring and Richard Strauss’ Four Last Songs, sung by soprano Laura Wilde, a recent graduate of The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Grams will host the first of two Inside the Music with Andrew Grams on Friday, November 2, providing insight into Wagner’s The Ring. ESO audience favorite, pianist Natasha Paremski, returns to perform in concerts highlighting Romantic composers Brahms, Chopin and Schumann February 9 and 10. The program opens with Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture. Ms. Paremski will play Chopin’s shimmering Piano Concerto No. 2 and the program closes with Schumann’s Symphony No. 4.

On March 23 and 24, Music Director Andrew Grams will conduct a program featuring two Baroque composers and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, one of the greatest composers of all time. The first half of the program holds Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 and Telemann’s Concerto for Two Horns and Two Violins, featuring ESO Principal Horn Greg Flint, ESO Horn Steve Replogle and ESO violins, TBA. The concerts close with Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 or Jupiter Symphony. On Friday, March 22, Grams will host Inside the Music with Andrew Grams, diving deep into Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony.

The season finale concerts on May 4 and 5, led by Andrew Grams, highlight the awardwinning Elgin Symphony Orchestra, which

FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019

has won Illinois Professional Orchestra of the Year a record-setting four times from the Illinois Council of Orchestras. The program holds the ESO premiere of Mahler’s Adagio from Symphony No. 10 and American composer Aaron Copland’s final symphony, No. 3, which includes the theme from his work Fanfare for the Common Man. • In addition, on January 26 and 27, Andrew Grams will conduct the Pops concert, A Night in Old Vienna, a program of waltzes and polkas reminiscent of Vienna’s famous New Year’s concert. ESO Listener Clubs, hosted by music historian Jim Kendros, are offered the Wednesday before Classics Series performances at the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin and GreenFields in Geneva. Free and open to the public, Kendros discusses the composers and the music that will be presented in upcoming concerts. And all Saturday night concertgoers are invited to “Mingle with the Musicians” after the show at area restaurants, where they can meet Music Director Grams, guest artists and ESO musicians. Resident Conductor Stephen Squires will conduct

three (3) programs during the 2018/19 season: •

On October 5 at the Schaumburg Prairie Center for the Arts, and October 6 and 7 at the Hemmens Cultural Center, Squires will lead the ESO, the Elgin Master Chorale and guest soloists TBA in the Pops concert, American Spectacular, a musical salute to America, honoring the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

Squires will lead Classics concerts on January 11 at Schaumburg Prairie Center for the Arts and January 12 and 13 at the Hemmens Cultural Center that feature Haydn’s Symphony No. 94 or “Surprise” Symphony, Kodály’s exotic Peacock Variations and Anton Bruch’s famous Violin Concerto No. 1, one of the most popular violin concertos in the repertoire, performed by ESO concertmaster Isabella Lippi.

Squires will conduct the ESO’s holiday concerts, Sounds of the Season, a popular Fox Valley tradition, on December 8 and 9. These extravaganza performances include soloists, dancers, the Elgin Master Chorale

and an appearance by a very special visitor from the North Pole. Guest conductor Teddy Abrams, Music Director of the Louisville Orchestra, leads a Classics program of guitar favorites on March 2 and 3. Jason Vieaux, guitar, will perform Villa-Lobos’ Concerto for Guitar and Small Orchestra and Corigliano’s Troubadours Variations for Guitar and Chamber Orchestra. The program also includes Smetana’s The Moldau and Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini. The ESO will also offer a variety of programming for young people and their families during the 2018/19 season. Ainsworth Concerts for Youth will bring around 9,000 area students to Hemmens Cultural Center with the ESO providing teachers guides prior to the performances to enhance the concert experience. ESO Masterclasses with visiting guest artists will be presented free and open to the public at the Gail Borden Public Library. And finally ESO Traveling Ensembles will visit area schools giving students the chance to hear classical music up close and personal. Newsies - Music that make audiences want to stand up and cheer Newsies is the rousing, Disney family musical ripped straight from the headlines about newsboys who take on a greedy news tycoon. High in the skyscrapers of New York City, Joseph Pulitzer is plotting a way to increase the revenue of his declining newspaper. Meanwhile, down in the streets, scrappy newsboys hawking Pulitzer’s paper are barely making enough to survive. When Pulitzer raises the price of the paper, charismatic

delivery boy Jack Kelly organizes a strike to show the tycoon and his cronies they’re not going to be pushed into the gutter. Newsies – based on the popular 1992 Disney movie, which in turn was inspired by the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City – is packed with unforgettable songs, including “The World Will Know,” “Seize the Day” and “King of New York.” The stage version was first presented by Disney Theatrical Productions on Broadway in 2012, where it ran for more than 1,000 performances before touring. It’s no surprise Newsies was nominated for eight Tony Awards, winning Best Choreography and Best Score, given its music is by Alan Menken, the eighttime Oscar-winning genius behind some of the most popular Disney films of all time including The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Pocahontas. Lyrics are by Jack Feldman. Book is by Harvey Fierstein, based on the film’s screenplay by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White. Jim Corti, artistic director at Paramount, tops the masthead of Newsies. Corti directed last season’s smash hit The Producers, along with staging three consecutive Jeff Award winners for Best Production-Musical-Large (Les Misérables, West Side Story and Sweeney Todd) and winning Best Director for two (Les Misérables and Sweeney Todd.) “What I’m really attracted to is the hard knock story of it. Why these boys had to strike. What caused the strike. I don’t think people leave Newsies thinking about that,” said Corti. “We’re going to find a way to make these kids more credible. To make them real street kids. Making that conflict more palpable is what I hope to do with our production, and I think audiences are going to be cheering all the more for these guys when we can capture what they are going through.”

No, An Employer Can’t Ask Salary History in Illinois Anymore!!!! BY BILL BOZNOS, BOZNOS LAW OFFICE Effective September 29, 2019, it will be illegal for an employer in Illinois to ask or use the salary history of an applicant in making employment decisions. Governor Pritzker has just signed an amendment to the Equal Pay Act which makes that practice unlawful. Was he moved by the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team that is claiming unequal pay for the same work as their male counterparts? Laudable, but unlikely. Statistics show that females in Illinois earn, on average, only 79% of what males earn. As an employment law attorney that seeks to promote equal justice in all areas of employment, I applaud this move. The Equal Pay Act has been in existence since 2003. In general, it makes it illegal to discriminatorily pay employees differently on the basis of sex or race. The new amendment which the Governor just signed puts some teeth into the law by mandating that an employer can NOT: • Screen out job applicants based on their current or prior wage histories; • Request or require salary history as a condition of being considered for employment or as a condition for being interviewed, or as a condition for

FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019

continuing to be considered for a job, or as a condition for an offer of employment. • Seek salary history from a current or former employer. In addition to these prohibitions, the new law also protects employees’ rights to discuss wages and benefits with others. As a result, it is now unlawful for an employer to discipline an employee for discussing wages with other employees or for the employer to require an employee to sign a contract or waiver prohibiting them from discussing wages or benefits with other employees. Since many employers have policies that say employees cant discuss wages with others, this is an area that must be revisited and changed immediately. So, if an employer is restricted in what they can’t ask, are there any things an employer can ask? The Answer is yes. An employer may properly ask: • An employer CAN provide information about wages and benefits for a particular position and ask the applicant if those are within the applicant’s expectations; • An employer CAN engage in a conversation with an applicant as to the applicant’s expectations of salary or benefits without first disclosing the total compensation

(salary/benefits) that come with a position; • If an applicant voluntarily discloses his/her salary history then no violation exists so long as the employer does not use that information in making a hiring decision. While there is still time to change employment practices before the effective date of the new law, at a very minimum, all Illinois employers should immediately review their employment applications to remove any questions related to salary history. Secondly, they should cease all screening and interview questions relating to salary or wage history. Finally, any policy that an employer may have regarding a prohibition against employees openly discussing salary history need to be revised and deleted from any policy manual or practice. The new law carries with it special damages of up to $10,000.00 per violation, injunctive relief, and my favorite, attorney’s fees! With over 35 years’ experience in advising employers and employees on workplace issues, let Boznos Law work with you to ensure you are ready to meet the challenges posed by the changes to the employment laws. Geneva Library Depicted On City’s Pewter Ornament As the Geneva Public Library prepares to open its new facility in the coming months, the City’s newest pewter ornament honors the current building the library has called home for more than a century. The 2019 ornament, which depicts the library on the front and history of the building on the back, is now on sale for $12. The ornament can be purchased from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday at City Hall, 22 S. First St., or online at www.geneva.il.us/store. After a referendum passed in 1894, construction on the library began two years later. However, due to a lack of funding, the structure stood with half-finished walls for several years. In 1906, the women of the Geneva Improvement Association took over the structure “as a free gift” on the condition they see the library endeavor to completion. A $7,500 gift from Andrew Carnegie in 1907 also supported the library effort. The original library building, located at the corner of Second and James Streets, opened in 1908, with additions following in 1938, 1986 and 1998. The Craftsman architectural style is enhanced by stone exterior chimneys and Tudor half-timbering with stucco. Stone for the original part of the building is from the Batavia quarry. Royal Fox Country Club in St. Charles

business Completes $5 Million in Improvements & Upgrades

$5 Million in capital improvements and upgrades help return Royal Fox Country Club, eight time host of the Illinois Open and the 2019 host of the Illinois Senior Open, among the best in the Chicagoland golf market. Only two years after a change in ownership and rebuilt infrastructure, the private club located in western suburbs has invested in a capital improvement plan including multiple projects, starting in the fall of 2017. The lower level of the clubhouse has been completely renovated featuring new men’s and ladies locker rooms, fitness center and pro shop followed by a golf course bunker renovation by Wadsworth Golf Construction. “The bunker project utilized the patented Better Billy Bunker drainage system which has greatly improved the functionality and playability,” commented Brian Tulk, PGA General Manager. “The addition of the white Pro Angle sand and the redesign of the bunker features provide a new aesthetic quality that did not previously exist”. Several bunkers were added and others removed or repurposed as grass bunkers to offer multiple strategic playing options. The golf course project will finish with a complete cart path replacement this fall and sod replacement of the bentgrass green collars and bluegrass around the green complex perimeters to improve the scoring areas around the greens.
