Savory Chickpea Masala BY SARA SNELLING OF ALL ON THE TABLE

Easy One-Pan Meal! I tried for years to make a masala or curry dish that rivaled the local restaurant I frequent but it seems as though the answer was simply- ‘keep it simple’. This recipe is easy, accessible and totally satisfying. You can add chicken as well, or add cabbage, cashews, spinach etc and turn it into a Buddha Bowl! YUM!!

FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2019

What You Need • • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 white onion 3 med zucchini 28 oz diced tomatoes in juice 28 oz tomato puree 3 15oz cans of chickpeas/garbanzo beans, thoroughly rinsed 3 TBSP minced garlic (I r=prefer fresh as it’s less sweet) 1/2 cup organic heavy whipping cream 1 tsp cayenne pepper (or a fresh, diced pepper of your choice) 1 tsp each: cumin, pepper, coriander 1 TBSP each: curry powder, turmeric salt to taste cilantro for garnish coconut oil

What You Do Sauté the onion in coconut oil about 2 minutes (and the fresh pepper, if you choose to use this instead of cayenne). Add zucchini and sauté until onion is until translucent/tender and zucchini is tender. Add tomatoes, puree, chickpeas and spices and simmer about 20 minutes on low. Stir in whipping cream to fully incorporate and enjoy! Bon Appetit!

My passion for learning, teaching and history is undeniable, but I was struggling financially, so I began moonlighting as a bartender just to make ends meet, and unexpectedly fell madly in love with every aspect of the bar business. For my squad and I it is about so much more than making a great cocktail. It’s about memories, music, history and sharing those moments, ensuring you embrace the present, reflect on the past and securing a bright future.

Cyclone Cocktail Recipe

The Paloma was thought to be created sometime in the 50’s. However, some of the first sitings weren’t until the early 80’s in Guadalajara, Mexico, and went by the names, Fresca’s or Paloma’s. What we do know is, the Paloma is deliciously refreshing and consists of tequila grapefruit soda, lime and salt.

BY JAVIER VILLANEUVA, THE WILDFLOWER SQUAD Cyclone is a cocktail that balances and harmonizes two spirits, while paying homage to a cocktail, [Paloma] with a historically ominous beginning.

Maple Park Fun Fest

events Saturday August 31st – Sunday September 1st

Maple Park Fun Fest is a classic small town festival geared for big time entertainment. Founded in 1998, Fun Fest began as a local softball tournament, but a committed few realized the potential and wanted more. They began to expand, adding a parade and fireworks; eventually leading to what we see today. Over the years, Fun Fest has added a Craft Show, Car Show, Bags Tournament, Kids’ Bike and Wagon Parade, live entertainment, food vendors, 5K race/2 mile walk, and the Kid Zone, loaded with activities. Both children and adults will find plenty to do all weekend long. Each year, Fun Fest attracts about 1500 - 2000 people. Many of those are FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2019

local residents who bring out their families and friends, but we also get a good crowd from neighboring towns. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are one of the only festivals in the area that is FREE to attend. There is no parking fee; there is no soundstage fee. Fun Fest is a not-for-profit event, run completely by volunteers. Funds that we raise are mainly used to support the festival the following year, but we also purchase items for the village of Maple Park. This past year, we updated all of the Christmas lights for the village. Currently, we are discussing the possibility of starting a scholarship for a college bound Maple Park resident. Our overall goal is to provide some entertainment for this small town community. It is a way to get Maple Park on the map and make it even more special. Come on out and experience the magic of Maple Park Fun Fest!

3 Simple Steps for a Sensational School Start BY ANN MARIE GUENTHER, OWNER OF THAT GIRL ORGANIZES Ready…Set…Go! School is around the bend and our kiddos need to be successful right from the get go! Here are a few ways to get the kiddos on track before school starts so they are consistently using routines (the foundation of being organized in school and let’s face it, life!)

1.

Command Center

A command center houses school papers and a chore chart. These should be both visible and accessible for Jr. I use a wall file in my home and each child has a labeled pocket he/she places any work from school. I go through the paperwork, sign permission slips (place them into backpacks), hang artwork on the board, calendar any important events and recycle the rest before dinner. FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2019

CHORE CHART

Our chore chart is part of the command center. Our children do a few daily chores (life skills). It’s amazing what a 2 year old can do if you let them! This momma doesn’t want to have a 40 year old living in her basement! Doing chores gives the little people pride and life skills, what could be better?

2.

Bedtime Rituals

The hardest thing for most of caregivers is to get the little buggers down because we expect it to happen in 3 minutes or less. Here is a solution that works for most children.

• Start a bedtime routine 45 minutes to an hour before lights are out. • Have your little one brush teeth, use the bathroom and get into his/her pajamas. You do the same. • Next, read for 15 minutes or let him read on his own. Reading is relaxing and a little boring. This induces sleep. • Talk about plans for the following day while giving your darling a back scratch/tickle. My children LOVE this! • Lights out!

3.

Lunch and Backpack

My children are 7-17 and this is how I get their lunches made in a jiffy.

After dinner, leave any leftovers out someone might use for their lunch, plus fruits, the basket of bars, and containers of cut of veggies, hard boiled eggs, some hummus, and bread. The children each whip up what they want to eat the following day. It must include protein, fruit and veggies. There is no junk food in their lunches. They need to perform at school, not fall asleep! Water bottles are filled and within 5 minutes, lunches are ready! I love teaching them life skills!

BACKPACKS:

This can be easy! Have a designated spot for the backpacks to go daily. A closet, under a bench, next to a door, in a corner, in the garage on hooks…find a spot and use it! These are a few of the simple ways to make going to school easy for everyone! If you’d like specific tips on your organizational challenges, drop me an email at Annmarie@ThatGirlOrganizes.com. I’d love to hear from you!

CBD IS EVERYWHERE, AND NOW IT’S IN “HAIRCARE” BY AMI CHRISTIANSON, OWNER OF ONE SALON AND BRIDAL COMPANY I’m always researching and testing the latest products and technologies in the haircare industry. I will be honest, this is one of my favorite things to do, in my free time. Almost a hobby. Looking back at the 80’s, when I started my career I’m so grateful for all the new and improved products I’m now able to choose for my clients, and myself. So,...everyone is talking about CBD. When I first began my research on the benefits of the hemp plant I thought to myself “I wonder when this healing, anti-inflammatory ingredient will be available in hair and skin care.” Well, here it is, and here is why. CBD naturally interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system which con-

trols the body’s regulator system and response to internal and external stressors. It naturally provides calming soothing relief to the scalp while restoring balance for healthy hair growth.

The proteins in CBD also increase the diameter of each hair strand for fuller thicker hair. CBD is high in essential fatty acids such as Omegas 3,6, and 9 which hydrates hair, and prevents moisture loss.

I have chosen to use Emera CBD Haircare in my salon. Why?...Emera is made from 100% organic cannabidiol (CBD) oil from sustainable, harvested, non GMO industrial hemp plants. If you read my last blog, “What goes on your body, goes in your body, you understand how passionate I am about clean products.

I always encourage my clients to their own research to understand why I have chosen the products I use, and recommend. I encourage you to do the same. www.emerahaircare.com

It contains 21 known amino acids- the protein building blocks of the body, which help bulid up collagen and elastin. Both are essential for healthy resilient hair that is prone to breakage.

Naperville Jaycees’ Last Fling OFFERS NATIONAL & LOCAL MUSICAL ACTS ON TWO STAGES! FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2019

The Naperville Jaycees is proud to announce their full musical lineup for the Main Stage and Jackson Avenue Block Party Stage for the 2019 Last Fling. The Last Fling takes place all along the Riverwalk in Downtown Naperville over all 4 days of Labor Day weekend. “This year’s event will feel a lot more like your typical music festival. We decided to open the Main Stage gates earlier than most previous years to give patrons an opportunity to enjoy music throughout the day and allow them to come and go as they please. I really feel as if we have a solid line up this year and I hope that the community will come out, have some fun and help raise some money with us at the 2019 Last Fling,” says Entertainment Co-Chair Danielle Tufano.

2019 Main Stage Acts:

The Last Fling Main Stage will start rocking on Friday night (August 30) with headliner Better

Than Ezra. Before their omnipresent 1995 single “Good” hit No. 1, before their debut album Deluxe went double-platinum, before popular shows such as Desperate Housewives licensed their song “Juicy,” before Taylor Swift attested to their timeless appeal by covering their track “Breathless” — New Orleans’ Better Than Ezra was a pop-rock act paying its dues, traveling from town to town in a ramshackle van. Over two decades after the band formed, that vigilance still resonates strongly with the trio, who were finally rewarded after seven years of stubbornly chasing their dreams. “This band,” notes bassist Tom Drummond, “has never been handed anything.” Opening

for Better Than Ezra is 7th Heaven, who has charted #1 on the Midwest Billboard Charts multiple times and has been heard on various radio stations in the Chicagoland area with their hits “This Is Where The Party’s At,” “Time Of Our Lives,” “Beautiful Life,” “Stoplight,” “Better This Way” and “Sing.” Gates open at 4:45PM and bands start at 5PM.

The Last Fling Main Stage party will continue on Saturday (August 31) and will feature Vertical Horizon as the headlining band. Vertical Horizon was founded in the early 1990s, but it was seven years before lead singer Matt Scannell’s songs became the radio hits that brought the popular grass roots band to national attention. Vertical Horizon released three albums independently (There and Back Again, Running on Ice, and Live Stages) and toured extensively before signing with RCA Records in 1998. In 1999, they released their breakout album, Everything You Want, which went on to sell more than two million copies. The second single off the CD, the title track “Everything You Want,” captured the #1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 and Adult Top 40 charts, and became Billboard’s Most Played Single of 2000. Having carved out a page in the annals of music history the band garnered further radio attention with “You’re a God” (#4 on Billboard’s Adult Chart) and “Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning).” In 2005, “Best I Ever Had” became a top 20 country hit for country star Gary Allan. Their follow-up album, Go, was released in 2003 and solidified the

band as a no-nonsense pop rock entity. Eventually, the band took a hiatus to pursue individual interests. In 2007, feeling the time was right to start working on a new album, Matt began composing the songs which would eventually become Burning the Days. The album was critically acclaimed and produced two Hot AC radio singles, “Save Me from Myself” and “The Lucky One.” In 2013 Vertical Horizon released Echos From the Underground, named after a lyric from the song “Evermore.” In February 2018 Vertical Horizon released their latest album, The Lost Mile. Opening for Vertical Horizon will be 97Nine (the premier classic rock cover band in the Midwest), The Right Now (pop-meetssoul) and Take The Reins (Chicago-area rock band). Gates open at 11:45AM and bands start at 12PM.

Sunday (September 1) on the Last Fling Main Stage is sure to be a crowd-pleaser with headliners Big Head Todd & The Monsters. Thirty years would seem like something to commemorate, especially with the same core lineup, an achievement few other namebrand bands can boast of. Yet right now they’re less about celebrating stability than volatility, in the form of their eleventh studio album, New World Arisin’, which makes good on its forward-facing title FoxValleyMagazine.com

16 Candles (bringing all the great 80’s songs you love to life in full force), The Ron Burgundy’s (Yacht Rock and other softcore rock from the 60s, 70s and 80s) and Tres Moustache (bringing perfect live acoustic sound to any room, street or venue). Gates open at 11:45AM and bands start at 12PM.

2019 Jackson Avenue Block Party Acts:

The Jackson Avenue Block Party Stage is THE place to be throughout Labor Day Weekend for some of the best local bands in the Chicagoland area! Friday (August 30) will feature Hi Infidelity (rocking the 80s! Journey, Bon Jovi, REO, Def Leppard and more) with openers Libido Funk Circus (Chicago’s premiere dance & party band) and INDIGO (up-tempo R&B/blues band). Gates and Music at 5PM.

with what might be the brashest rock and roll of their career. The old world can’t rest on any laurels, and neither will they. While they enjoy a robust fan base around the country, their success is outsized in Colorado, where they’re practically the unofficial state band. Grendze has been developing a body of work from her home studio that explores pathways and systems through the medium of woven, threedimensional drawings. This next iteration in the “Synapse” series asks: what are the pathways, the systems, that foster a true community? Back from last year are the ArtsFest Gallery Crawl and Poetry Crawl. The Poetry Crawl features poems chosen to be displayed in businesses throughout downtown St. Charles, including Breadsmith, The Diamondaire, 116 Gallery, Kilwins, Brunch Café, Kava Diem, Smitty’s on the Corner, Townhouse Books, and SIP Parties. To honor the City’s 185th Anniversary, we’ve asked poets to write on the subject of St. Charles. Poets interested in participating in the event should email their poem to tmcwhitworth@gmail.com with a brief bio by August 9. Visit http://www. stcharlesartscouncil.org/calls-to-artists/ for more info about the Call to Poets. The returning Gallery Crawl includes NINE art galleries/exhibitions operating during the event, including the SCAC’s latest ArtsFest Pop-Up Gallery and the Norris Cultural Arts Center’s signature Vicinity Show, as well as the Park District’s Sculpture Exhibition. New shows will be up at 116 Gallery, Fine Line Creative Arts Center, Kava Diem, and Steel Beam Theatre Gallery. The St. Charles Public Library will also have an exhibit in their Mezzanine Gallery that celebrates the City’s 185 years through photos. As always, there’s also a wealth of public art to be taken in throughout St. Charles, in addition to Rita Grendze’s newest temporary installation

at the St. Charles History Museum. The best way to view public art? Download the Otocast app and find the SCAC’s Art in Public Places Art Tour for a guided tour of public art across St. Charles. ArtsFest also features a fantastic array of performing arts programming. Autumn Picnic with a Classical Music Nature September 14

Fox Valley Music Consortium (FVMC) is hosting a fun-filled Autumn Picnic Gala on Saturday, September 14, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Belle Salle Banquets in Aurora. This adult fundraising event will include entertainment, games and a buffet dinner. There will also be silent and live auctions. FVMC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization that provides orchestral musical performances for people of all ages and educational opportunities for youth in the Fox Valley community. The organization’s ability to continue to operate is due in large part to the generous support of individual donors and patrons, as well as gifts from businesses and corporations from the community they serve. The FVMC encompasses the Fox Valley Orchestra, Fox Valley Orchestra Chorus, Fox Valley Brass Band, Fox Valley Youth Orchestra, Fox Valley Youth Chorus, and Fox Valley El Sistema programs, plus the newly added Jazz Band and Chamber Singers. They offer many cultural experiences and educational opportunities for adults and

FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2019

youth; and provide teachers, instruments, and instructional curriculum for disadvantaged students in after-school programs at 19 public and private schools in Aurora. The FVMC partners with many organizations including the Fox Valley Park District, Communities in Schools, Aurora School Districts 131 and 129, and Covenant Christian School to bring these programs to children eager to learn and experience music. The FVMC’s roots began with the Fox Valley Orchestra (FVO) in 2010 and they later added the Chorus to bring a full symphonic orchestral experience to the city of Aurora, the second largest city in the state, and the surrounding Fox Valley residents. It is a hidden gem and is now considered one of the top three orchestras in the state.

However, “to be accessible to the general public, every orchestra must limit the cost of its tickets. But this means that the orchestra cannot survive on its ticket sales alone. The generous support of the public is necessary,” says Ron Vavrinek, Vice-President of the Fox Valley Music Consortium. The FVO will be celebrating its 10th anniversary during the upcoming 2019/2020 season. For tickets go to www.foxvalleyorchestra.org

Hamlet, Prince of Denmark Abridged

The Elgin Theatre Company and the Fremont Street Theater Company are pleased to announce their co-production of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark Abridged. The play was written by William Shakespeare and has been adapted and is directed by Thomas Neumann. This production will be part of the 2019 Elgin Fringe Festival. Performances: Performances of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark Abridged will be held at the Elgin Art Showcase, 164 Division St., 8th floor, Elgin, Il. 6020. Performances will be on Thursday, September 12, 2019, at 6:00 pm, Friday, September 13, 2019, at 9:00 pm, and Saturday, September 14, 2019, at 7:30 pm. Synopsis: Set in Denmark, the play depicts Prince Hamlet and his revenge against his uncle, Claudius, who has murdered Hamlet’s father in order to seize his throne and marry Hamlet’s mother. Hamlet is Shakespeare’s longest play and is considered among the most powerful and influential works of world literature, with a story

FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2019

capable of “seemingly endless retelling and adaptation by others” Now in a new version, specifically adapted for Elgin Fringe Festival, this Epic tale is shortened down to just 40 minutes. Still containing the intrigue, drama, and climactic finale that has made Hamlet the second most filmed story in history, this classic has been adapted to turn a long and broad drama into a small play of family loyalty and betrayal.

Character Breakdowns: •

Hamlet (20-35): - The Prince of Denmark, the title character, and the protagonist. Hamlet is the son of Queen Gertrude and the late King Hamlet, and the nephew of the present king, Claudius. Hamlet is melancholy, bitter, and cynical, full of hatred for his uncle’s scheming and disgust for his mother’s sexuality. A reflective and thoughtful young man who has studied at the University of Wittenberg, Hamlet is often indecisive and hesitant, but at other times prone to rash and impulsive acts. Claudius (25-45): - The King of Denmark, Hamlet’s uncle, and the play’s antagonist. The villain of the play, Claudius is a calculating, ambitious politician, driven by his sexual appetites and his lust for power, but he occasionally shows signs of guilt and human feeling—his love for Gertrude, for instance, seems sincere. Polonius/Ghost/Osric (30-60): POLONIUS: The Lord Chamberlain of Claudius’s court, a pompous, conniving old man. Polonius is the father of Laertes and Ophelia. GHOST: The specter of Hamlet’s recently deceased father. The ghost, who claims to have been murdered by Claudius, calls upon Hamlet to avenge him. However, it is not entirely certain whether the ghost is what it appears to be, or whether it is something else. Hamlet speculates that the ghost might be a devil sent to deceive him and tempt him into murder, and the question of what the ghost is or where it comes

from is never definitively resolved. OSRIC: The foolish courtier who judges the duel. Horatio (18-35) - Hamlet’s close friend, who studied with the prince at the university in Wittenberg. Horatio is loyal and helpful to Hamlet throughout the play. After Hamlet’s death, Horatio remains alive to tell Hamlet’s story. Laertes (18-25) - Polonius’s son and Ophelia’s brother, a young man who spends much of the play in France. Passionate and quick to action, Laertes is clearly a foil for the reflective Hamlet. Gertrude (25-45) - The Queen of Denmark, Hamlet’s mother, recently married to Claudius. Gertrude loves Hamlet deeply, but she is a shallow, weak woman who seeks affection and status more urgently than moral rectitude or truth. Ophelia (18-30) - Polonius’s daughter, a beautiful young woman with whom Hamlet has been in love. Ophelia is a sweet and innocent young girl, who obeys her father and her brother, Laertes. Dependent on men to tell her how to behave, she gives in to Polonius’s schemes to spy on Hamlet. Even in her lapse into madness and death, she remains maidenly, singing songs about flowers and finally drowning in the river amid the flower garlands she had gathered.

Show Start Times: Thursday 7:30 pm Friday 8:00 pm Saturday 7:30 & 9:45 pm

Vince Carone who has been described as “A ranting blue-collar rep for America’s true voice” is coming off his 4threlease “I Plead the First” (2017). Performing since 2001, Carone, who is no stranger to the comedy scene, has become known for his fast-talking, quickwitted, over-the-top rants, combined with a dominating stage presence. His ability to rattle off more material in one show than most could do in a weekend is what keeps the crowd engaged during his verbal assault. Carone refuses to relent until he steps off the stage. The chaotic, cathartic, complaints by Carone are summed up by his own public service announcement: “Better check the Doppler, there’s a sh*t-storm coming your way!”

Leonard Ouzts Fri, Aug. 9

Ouzts is still a young comic, but his appealing history – which is full of terrible jobs, like being a waiter at IHOP – and loads of self-doubt give this natural talent plenty of fodder for his act. Leonard has goals to entertain all across the country and take comedy by the horns. His long term aspirations include acting, major tours, and possibly writing a book about his experiences. “I love entertaining, but what I found most gratifying is when I was 18 years old and performed a 5 minute set in a club in front of 125 strangers. At the end of the show, a 47 year old gentleman told me he lost his job and his home, but all my jokes somehow made him forget all that. That will stay with me forever.” FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2019

He has been doing standup for ten years and has developed a charismatic stage presence that captivates audiences locally as well as those on the road. A variety of life experiences have given the comic material to draw from for his act. Playing music was ROB’sfirst show business love. He is an accomplished drummer and joined his first band at the age of 11. ROB also spent many years behind the scenes as a light and sound technician. His likeability, talent, and humor made him a favorite with coworkers and stars alike. The backstage experience has given him a unique comedic insight to show business on the Las Vegas Strip. The lighter side of Las Vegas culture (aka. smoking, drinking, and gambling) is explored on stage and appeals to folks all over the country. ROB is married with four children in all shapes and sizes. If you thought website accessibility was only for your customers, think again! BY BILL BOZNOS, BOZNOS LAW OFFICE In today’s workplace, most employers have gone (kicking and screaming) into the digital age as it relates to their employment practices. Prospective employees fill out on-line applications that are filtered by OCR programs designed to seek out relevant key words in order to pass along an applicant to a company. Many companies now use on-line employment applications. Employee manuals and policy and procedure guidelines are now digitally stored and are only accessible through the use of a computer. If a visually impaired applicant or employee cannot access these materials, chances are that your business may be missing out on qualified applicant or worse, become the target for claims under the Americans With Disabilities (“ADA) Act.

FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2019

“Employers need to take notice of this growing trend as we continue to move further into the digital age.” The EEOC’s Guidance on the Americans With Disabilities Act provides that: [a]n employer must provide a reasonable accommodation to a qualified individual with a disability that will enable the individual to have an equal opportunity to participate in the application process and be considered for the job (unless it can show an undue hardship.)” Many retailers who sell their wares on line have learned (some the hard way), that they must make their offerings on line accessible to consumers with visual or auditory disabilities. Employers who use on line applications can be targets for visually or auditorily impaired applicants, or potentially a group of applicants who were unable to apply for a job simply because he or she could not read the content of the on line application. While public accommodation cases involving potential customers result only in the payment of the claimant’s attorney’s fees, cases involving job applicants who have been denied the ability to seek employment because of a physical impairment can result in significant amounts being paid in damages. Employers need to take notice of this growing trend as we contin-

ue to move further into the digital age. Cutting edge companies with on line presences have moved to a “plug in” that allows for ADA compliance throughout the site, including all information contained on the site as well as the employment application itself. These plug ins can also be used on a company’s intranet site so that all the information is likewise accessible to existing employees. And as a final note, consider whether the law firm an employer uses has an ADA complaint website. Ours (http//www.boznoslawoffice. com) is fully ADA compliant. If you turn to an attorney that professes to be and employment law expert, yet their own website is not ADA compliant, it is a sign that they are behind the times. Is that who you really want representing your business in a time of need? With over 34 years’ experience in advising employers and employees on workplace issues, let Boznos Law work with you to ensure you are ready to meet the challenges posed by the changes to the employment laws.
