 The September meeting of Evening Membership Department of the Haddon Fortnightly (EMD) will be held at the clubhouse on Tue Sep 11 from 7:30 to 9pm.

During the meeting, Nicolette Rallo of Absegami High School and Hannah Hershberger and Samantha Verzella, both of Haddonfield Memorial High School, will discuss their recent experiences at the Girls’ Career Institute (GCI).

GCI, a program held each June at Douglass College on the campus of Rutgers University, is designed to broaden the horizons of high school juniors. Each year, the Fortnightly sponsors several career-minded students who wish to attend. The students always return from the conference with interesting – and sometimes humorous – stories to share with the club. Refreshments will be served following the meeting.

The EMD is always looking for new members – September is the perfect time to see what the club is all about! The club sponsors fun and informative meetings, fundraisers for charity, and community activities.

Recently, members crafted a float honoring Dick Clark for Haddonfield’s Fourth of July parade. Members laughed and reminisced while assembling a float which was later enjoyed by the community.

Moms in Touch is reaching out

 Calling all Haddonfield mothers!

The Moms in Touch prayer group gathers to pray for Haddonfield schools, teachers, administrators, staff, and students.

The group will meet on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month, from 9 to 10am, at the nearby Covenant Presbyterian Church, located at 520 Kings Hwy S in Cherry Hill.

The “MAC Pack” is a NEW and EXCITING program starting September 10, 2012 for children aged 3 – 6 (potty trained) where the children will have exposure to a structured yet whimsical art, movement and music based curriculum. We will focus on creativity through various vehicles including painting, clay, movement, yoga, drama, dancing, crafts, story time, games, and more! The Art will be a source of inspiration and enjoyment students will create projects that stimulate the imagination and open the door to further exploration of the arts. There’s no shortage of senior programming in Haddonfield and Haddon Heights.

If cost was no object, how would you spend your retirement?

• Haddon Heights native BETH BORCHERS said she would visit places like Paris, Ireland, and the Grand Canyon, but that she “can’t think of anywhere to spend retirement other than right here in the Haddons” surrounded by the people, places, and traditions that she loves. Beth added that she would also bring back Haddon Heights’ 4th of July fireworks if “money was no object.”

• MICHAEL PENDLETON lives in Haddonfield and answered without hesitation.

“I’d live like Neruda.

By the sea in my studio – painting, and writing, and tending to my garden in joined passion,” he smiled. “That is actually what I want to do.”

• TOM HAMBROSE is a lifelong Haddon Heights resident, an avid cyclist, and a world traveler. He envisions retirement “in France or Italy as a cycling tour guide.”

His plan to complete the last eight stages of the Tour de France next summer may be the start of something big!

• WILL PORTER (8) has the right idea. “I want to go miniature golfing in my retirement!” he exclaimed. Will’s Dad, MICHAEL, would choose to live in New York City. “I used to live and work there. I’m a city person,” he admitted. For now, the duo enjoys living in South Jersey. Will attends St. Rose of Lima School in Haddon Heights.

• JUDI PAUL works at the Haddonfield Acme. She vacations at the Jersey shore and loves collecting mermaid figurines. “I would retire to a nice island or to Cape May and shop for mermaids at the Nautical Treasures store,” she revealed.

• MITCHELL SCHMIDT asserted that he wouldn’t change what he’s doing in his semi-retirement “for all the money in the world!”

Mitchell is the sole proprietor of a wine-import business. He is proud to be an active resident and member of several volunteer organizations in Haddonfield.

Book Sale chatter

 The Haddonfield Friends of the Library will sponsor its annual two-day book sale on Sat Sep 22 from 10am to 4pm and on Sun Sep 23 from 12n to 4pm.

Visitors will peruse 25,000 hardbacks, paperbacks, cookbooks children’s books, audio books, videos, CD’s, and DVD’s.

Most books will be priced from $1 to $3. Specially priced items will also be available. Books will be replenished throughout the day on Saturday and before the sale opens on Sunday. Stop by more than once!

Current Friends of the Library members are invited to attend the 2nd annual Member Preview Sale and Reception on Fri Sep 21 from 6:30 to 8:30pm.

An assortment of books will be available for purchase.

Members will enjoy snacks and desserts provided by local businesses. Local authors will be on hand to discuss, sell, and autograph their latest books. Members are encouraged to bring rare books to be appraised, at no charge, by local book dealer Scott Hartman. A basket auction will make the evening complete.

All events will be held under the tents on the lawn in front of the library at 60 Haddon Ave in Haddonfield.

 The ninth annual Charlie’s Fight Night will be held on Sat Sep 15, from 7pm to 12m, at Citizens Bank Park’s Diamond Club in Philadelphia.

Charlie Clarke is a student at Haddonfield Memorial High School who is living with cystic fibrosis. Charlie, his family, and the Charlie’s Fight Committee have raised over 1.5 million dollars to fund research to develop new medications that will enable people like Charlie to live a comfortable life until a cure is found.

This annual event is one of the largest cystic fibrosis fundraisers in the Delaware Valley. Guests will enjoy cocktails, a spectacular silent auction, dinner, dancing, and entertainment.

Some of Philadelphia’s most notable sport celebrities will be in attendance. Thanks to the support of the Philadelphia Flyers organization, Charlie’s Fight Committee has welcomed Derian Hatcher, Kimmo Timonen, Claude Giroux, Danny Briere, Matt Carle, Braydon Coburn, Ian Laperriere, Chris Pronger, Brian Boucher, and Simon Gagne to past Fight Night events.

 Whether you are a job seeker looking for resources to land your dream job, a parent looking for free activities for your kids, or a student searching for your next favorite book, you owe it to yourself to visit the Haddonfield Public Library!

• As students head back to school in September, the Haddonfield Public Library wants to make sure that children and teens have the most important school supply of all – a library card. September is Library Card Sign-Up Month.

Owning a library card provides students with the resources they need to compete academically. Public libraries provide free access to the Internet, databases of news articles, encyclopedias, and test-preparation materials, as well as homework help and resources. Stop by and get carded!

• On Thu Sep 6 at 7pm, local author Mark Kram will discuss his newest book, Like Any Normal Day: A Story of Devotion.

Like Any Normal Day examines a young athlete’s life after lights dim and the crowds go home. Like Any Normal Day explores the enduring bond between brothers and duties places upon each of us in the wake of a catastrophic event. Kram will autograph books and answer questions following the discussion.

Kram is a senior writer for the Philadelphia Daily News. His feature articles have been awarded top honors by the Associated Press for several years; he has been published in the Best American Sports Writing Anthology.

Haddon Heights restaurateurs are collaborating to bring an Italian-style meal to a continuous table set up on Station Ave. Local chefs will prepare their favorite component of a typical Italian Sunday supper.

The Pop-Up restaurant promises fun for the whole family. Bring your wine of choice.

That’s Heightstory!

 The Borough of Haddon Heights Events Committee will sponsor a Revolutionary War Encampment on Sat Oct 13, rain or shine, in the Camden County Park across from the Hinchman-Hurley House (North Park Drive at Green Street, Haddon Heights).

Reenactors serving as the Second Pennsylvania Regiment, under Gen. Anthony Wayne, will establish camp at 10am. During the course of the day, the infantry and artillery will drill and the women will conduct the various chores. Cannons and muskets will be fired. A one-hour walking tour will begin at 2pm at the campsite. The reenactors will break down the camp at 4pm. For more information – and photos!

 On Fri Sep 28, from 7 to 10pm, the Mental Health Association in Southwestern New Jersey, a non-profit organization based in Haddon Heights, will host its 4th annual “Hot Chefs and Cool Music on the River” at the Camden County Boat House (7050 Park Drive N, Pennsauken, NJ).

Guests will enjoy appetizers and desserts created and served by four of South Jersey’s Hot Chefs. The event will also boast a cappuccino bar and wine and beer tasting.

Musical entertainment will be provided by the Cherry Hill East High School All-State Jazz Band.

A Chinese and silent auction will make the evening complete.

Tickets cost $75 per person and may be purchased at mhaswnj.org or by calling 522-0639 x114.

› The AARP Tax-Aide Program, in conjunction with the Internal Revenue Service, provides low- and moderate-income senior citizens with free assistance throughout tax season. AARP Tax-Aide service is provided by volunteers who are trained to answer questions and prepare Federal and New Jersey tax returns and Property Tax Reimbursement forms.

The Tax-Aide program is currently seeking volunteer tax counselors.

Volunteers will complete a self-study course, attend training sessions, and complete a take-home test during December 2012 and January 2013.

 The Haddon Heights Public Library hosts Guitar Hero and Rock Band sessions each Friday night from 6:30 to 9pm. Kids and parents are invited to become local rock stars free of charge. The library has recently acquired Rock Band 3! Call 547-7132 for more information.

Theatre focus

 The wait is over!

The Village Playbox, a community theatre troupe based in Haddon Heights, has announced its upcoming season. All shows will take place at the First Presbyterian Church in Haddon Heights (Green Street at 7th Ave).

The Village Playbox will kick-off its 73rd season with Samuel Taylors’ Sabrina Fair.

Take a trip back to Long Island in the 1950’s for a romantic comedy.

Performances will take place on Friday and Saturday evenings from Nov 2 thru Nov 17.

Auditions for Sabrina Fair will take place on Sun Aug 26 and Mon Aug 27, from 7:30 to 9:30pm daily, at the First Presbyterian Church in Haddon Heights. Auditions will consist of brief readings from the script; no appointments and no special materials are required.

The Playbox’s 73rd season will also include Lies & Legends: The Musical Stories of Harry Chapin in February 2013 and a final show in May 2013 (to be determined).

 Homewatch CareGivers sponsors Alzheimer’s Support Groups for family, friends, and caregivers of those struggling with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Catch flea market fever

 Circle the date on your calendar and start saving some mad money – the Haddonfield Lions Club’s annual Flea Market and Antique Show is just around the corner.

The highly anticipated bargain bonanza is scheduled to take place on Sat Sep 22, from 9am to 3pm, in the parking lot of the Archer & Greiner law firm, located at One Centennial Square (across from the PATCO station on Euclid Ave).

Shoppers are sure to find an assortment of new, used, and antique items furnished by approximately 100 vendors. Refreshments – breakfast sandwiches, burgers (both veggie and traditional), hot dogs, pretzels, drinks, and more – will be available to fuel famished bargain hunters.

Again, the Lions’ Flea Market will coincide with the Haddonfield Friends of the Library’s Book Sale.

Kids: Check out the MAC pack

› The Children’s School for the Arts at Haddonfield’s Markeim Arts Center will sponsor a new program for children, ages three thru six years, this fall.

During the program, students will be exposed to a structured art, movement, and music curriculum. Vehicles for expression will include painting, clay, dance, yoga, drama, music, crafts, storytime, and creative games.

Three-hour MAC Pack sessions will be offered on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings and on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

Parents may register their children for up to four sessions per week. Visit markeimartcenter.org/mac-pack/ for curriculum information and pricing.

This deadline’s approaching

 The Haddonfield Alumni Society is accepting nominations of outstanding individuals to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Over the last 18 years, the society has honored 75 former students, and 28 teachers, with this prestigious award.

Criteria for the nomination of a former student include: having attended one of Haddonfield’s public schools for at least two years (nominees may have graduated from a school other than Haddonfield Memorial High School), having been out of high school for at least 20 years, and having distinguished themselves during their adult lives. Teachers who have taught in the Haddonfield School District for at least seven years are also eligible for the award.

Nomination forms are available at ha-s.org/LAA_form. htm. Send letters of recommendation outlining achievements, along with supporting letters or materials, to: Haddonfield Alumni Society, c/o HMHS (Lifetime Achievement Awards), 401 Kings Hwy E, Haddonfield.

Are you a singer ... or a ringer?

 There’s a place for you in the Music Ministry at Haddonfield’s First Presbyterian Church (20 Kings Hwy E). The music program is open to all children, teens, and adults who would like to participate.

Children who would like to sing may join the Charub, Carol, or Chapel Choirs. Teens may join the Thomas Sherrerd Memorial Choir or the Oratorio Choir. And adults may joy the Chancel or Oratorio Choirs. Singing choirs will begin meeting in September.

Bell choirs, for music lovers of all ages (grades four and up), will also begin meeting in September. If you are interested in participating in a bell choir, call Ken Carter at 429-1960. Space is limited.

The Melodeers seek members

 If you’re retired, semi-retired, or a stay-at-home parent that enjoys singing, then why not consider jointing the Melodeers? The group often performs for retirement communities and day-care establishments. The Melodeers boast a unique repertoire of opera, Broadway, folk, standards, and novelty numbers.

The Melodeers will rehearse on various Tuesdays, beginning on Sep 11, at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior (204 Wayne Ave, Haddonfield).

Members must be available during the day for rehearsals and shows. The Melodeers present one or two concerts each month. There is no need to be able to read music or sing in four-part harmony to join – all you need is a love for music.

 In conjunction with the Moorestown Visiting Nurses Association, The First Presbyterian Church in Haddonfield will host its annual flu clinic on Sun Sep 9.

Flu immunizations will be administered to those ages 10-years and older. Those with a history of egg allergy will not be immunized.

The cost of the immunization is $30.

The rummage rundown:

 The Haddonfield United Methodist Church’s Thrifty Treasures Rummage Sale will take place on Thu Sep 27 thru Sat Sep 29 at the church (29 Warwick Road).

The most inventory – and the best bargains!

– will be available on Thu Sep 27, between 6 and 9pm. The sale will also take place on Fri Sep 28 from 9:30am to 5pm. Make a day of it! Soup, sandwiches, and beverages will be sold from 11am to 1:30pm.

Sat Sep 29 will mark the last day of the sale, doors will be open from 9am to 12n and from 1 to 2pm.

Baked goods will be sold during the rummage sale on Thu Sep 27th and Fri Sep 28.

Donations of new and good-quality items will be accepted at the rear of the church on Tue Sep 25 (9:30am to 8pm) and Wed Sep 26 (9:30am to 4pm).

Furniture, large exercise equipment, computers, used shoes for adults and children over five years, magazines, and combustible items will not be accepted.

 Mark your calendars for Kidzfest, taking place Sun Sep 23 at Challenge Grove Park (off Brace Road, Cherry Hill) from 11am to 3pm.

Children and parents will be treated to sporting activities, arts and crafts, pony rides, face painting, carnival games, and entertainers.

Help Women and Children Now, the driving force behind Kidzfest, is a Haddonfield-based organization started

by Lisa and Steve Hurly in honor of their son Stephen Michael.

Stephen Michael was born prematurely and suffered from heart disease; he died when he was five-weeksold after teaching his parents the true meaning of hope and love.

Kidzfest will raise funds to benefit research in pediatric heart disease, pediatric cancer, and premature birth.

Golfers will enjoy an afternoon on the course, a boxed lunch, a barbecue dinner, and an evening of family friendly activities and entertainment. The registration fee for golfers is $175.

Those who simply wish to partake in the barbecue dinner and family entertainment, beginning at 5:30pm, may register for the evening activities.

Dinner tickets cost $40 for adults and $15 for children. Children under four will be admitted for free.
