 Early in 1985, several of Tish Colombi’s friends suggested that she throw her hat in the ring for the upcoming Board of Commissioners election, scheduled for May. Although she was active with the PTA, her church, and Pigtail Softball, Colombi felt she was not sufficiently well known to stand a chance in a townwide election. She brushed her friends’ suggestion aside. Not to be put off, her friends responded: “Well, if we get enough signatures to put you on the ballot, will you run?” Confident they would fall short, Colombi agreed. Confident they would not, her friends went to work. The rest is history. During the Mayor’s Breakfast in January this year, Tish Colombi announced she would not be a candidate in the Board of Commissioners election to be held on Tue May 14, retiring after 28 years as a Borough commissioner – a record – including 12 years as mayor.

Around the Towns What’s Your Take?

• PJ Whelihan’s bartender BRENDA GILL hopes to start seeing more of the world long before she retires. “My boyfriend and I want to go to Italy. I have family there,” she explained. She would also like to see Tahiti and Bora Bora.

A Tribute Dinner will be held on Sun Apr 7 to honor Mayor Colombi prior to her retirement.

How do you dream of spending your retirement?

• JOE SILVA doesn’t think about his own retirement very often. “I don’t know if I will ever retire,” he laughed. “As a financial advisor, I help my clients plan for retirement. I’ll be busy assisting them when it’s time to retire,” he added. The offices of Silva Financial Services recently moved to Haddon Ave in Haddonfield.

• NIKKI and FABIO MARTORELL concurred that it would be delightful to retire to “an island with a margaritas our hands!” Nikki pampers clients at The Avenue Salon and Spa on Station Ave in Haddon Heights. When she retires, it will be her turn to relax!

• Haddonfield attorneys PAT and JIM MADDEN have different retirement plans. “I think I’ll run for Pope,” quipped Pat. “I’m already semiretired,” reported Jim. Currently enjoying threeday work weeks, Jim admitted his focus has shifted to “working a little, staying healthy, and pestering my brother Mike!”

• PJ Whelihan’s ROSE HOPE and CRAIG KEATING shared their thoughts on the future. “I may move back home to Austrailia when I retire,” reported Craig, who moved to the America six years ago. Rose is at home in South Jersey, where she grew up and is now raising her family. “I think I’ll retire and enjoy my kids’ kids!” she smiled.

• JIM CULLEN doesn’t plan on retirement. “I like what I do,” he said. Jim has worked as a pediatric nurse for 30 years. He currently works at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “Maybe someday I’ll do something a little less intense, but I really don’t think about retiring,” he reported. Jim is pictured enjoying his day off at PJ Whelihan’s in HaddonT ownship. Paid for by Neal Rochford for Commissioner. PO Box 123, Haddonfield NJ 08033. Vincent P. Russo, Treasurer.

Last call for the Last Man’s Dinner

 Those who wish to attend Post 38’s 73rd annual Last Man’s Dinner, on Mon Apr 1, are encouraged to purchase tickets without delay. The event will begin at 6pm, at Tavistock Country Club, with a social hour that will include a cash bar. The program will commence promptly at 7pm. Each year, the Last Man’s Club of the Haddonfield American Legion Post 38 conducts this event to honor the veterans who have served our country in the past as well as today’s active-duty personnel. The Last Man’s Club was created to preserve the memories of our wars, to pay fitting tribute to our departed comrades, to foster and perpetuate good fellowship ... and to eat, drink, and be merry. The Vice Commander of Post 38, Brian Fitzgerald – who recently returned from two tours in Afganistan – will emcee the proceedings. The program will include military honors, a “POW/MIA White Table Remembrance Service,â€? the annual “Remembrance Serviceâ€? honoring those members who have passed in the last year, and performances by the The Camden County Emerald Society Pipes and Drums. This year, with the war drawing down in Afghanistan, Post 38 will honor our veterans and soldiers of the Gulf Wars – particularly D.W Janszky, Brian Fitzgerald, Steve Pecorelli and our local soldiers and veterans who served during these difficult times in the aftermath of 9/11. The program has been shortened significantly. Attendees will receive a copy of the “2013 Last Man’s Dinner Programâ€? which will include some of items that have been omitted. Post 38 welcomes program advertisers. Tickets cost $40 per person which covers a prime-rib dinner and valet parking. Call 3540298 or visit ifchaddons.org for information about the Caregivers’ next training session at St Rose of Lima Church (300 Kings Hwy, Haddon Heights) on Wed Apr 17 from 7 to 9:30pm. If you are unable to volunteer your time, then consider making a taxdeductible donation. Donating $1 per week can help Interfaith Caregivers continue to provide vital services. Donating $420 (just $1.15 per day) can fully underwrite services to one client for an entire year.

Historical Society to present “A Tale of Two Elizabeths”

 The Historical Society of Haddonfield will host its annual Candlelight Dinner on Wed Mar 27 at Tavistock Country Club. The evening will begin with a cocktail reception (cash bar and hors d’oeuvres) at 6pm. Dinner will commence at 7pm; the evening’s program will follow. This year’s program will feature guest speaker Jeffery Dorwart, a professor Emeritus and former chair of History Department at Rutgers University – Camden. During his presentation, Dr. Dorwart will answer the question “How well do we really know Elizabeth Haddon Estaugh?” Dr. Dorwart is completing a definitive biography to be published by the Historical Society this fall. According to Dorwart, the lore of a young Quaker woman managing her father’s estate paints only half a portrait of the legendary Elizabeth Haddon. Historical records detail a much more complex and influential woman, who’s contributions helped expand role of women in early American history. This event will provide guests with a sneak peak into Dorwart’s work. The biography was compiled with the editing assistance of the Haddonfield Historical Society’s Doug Rauschenberger and Kathy Tassini. It is also based upon notes that the late Elizabeth “Betty” Lyons compiled during her forty years of research. During the evening, guests will be treated to a display of reproduction period clothing, which reflects the styles worn by John and Elizabeth Haddon Estaugh in the early 18th century. The Historical Society’s annual gala is open to the public. Tickets cost $45 for society members; $50 for non-members. Tickets may be purchased at haddonfieldhistory.org or by calling 429-7375.

 Did you know that Plays & Players was the first theatre in the Delaware Valley to premiere Number the Stars more than 13 years ago? Believing that the story’s message remains vitally important, Number the Stars will come to the Plays & Players’ stage once again. The stage version of Number the Stars was adapted from Lois Lowry’s Newbery Award-winning book. The show, set in 1943 Copenhagen, tells the story of how members of 10-year-old Annemarie Johansen’s family risked their lives to save her friend – Ellen Rosen – from the Nazis. Several weekday performances are planned for school groups. Public shows will take place on Wednesdays, Apr 17 and Apr 24, at 7:30pm; and on Sundays, Apr 21 and Apr 28, at 2pm. Tickets cost $10. Civic Association update:

 In 1911, the Civic Association was founded by a group of citizens concerned about the future of Haddonfield and the challenges confronting the town in the 20th century. The association’s founders believed that raising awareness and facilitating resident participation in public discourse would benefit the community. Over 100 years later, the organization’s commitment to inform, promote, and organize civic discussion remains vital.
