around the Towns What’s Your Take?

Haddonfield’s theatre scene seems to heat up when the temperatures plunge.

When did you last take center stage?

• ROBIN RAAB is pictured with her rescued buddies BOWIE and PHOEBE. She confessed, “The last time I was in the spotlight was when I took a sick day and ended up in a photograph in the Courier-Post ... walking my dogs!â€?

• CARLY CHAAPEL recently took center stage during Karaoke Night at Collingswood’s Grooveground. “I sang show tunes: All That Jazz, Lady Marmalade, and a song from the musical Wicked,â€? she reported. When Carly isn’t serving customers and singing tunes at Grooveground, she can be found working at WYSH in Haddonfield.

• GREG and RITA DURGIN said that being approached by What’s On is the closest they’ve come to taking center stage in a while. Greg is a photographer – he spends more time behind the camera than in front of it. The mother-son duo is pictured with their canine super-star, BUFFETT.

• ANTHONY ARMENTANI shared that he “worked in the entertainment industry for 30 years.â€? Anthony said that helping his wife, Joann, prepare for prom season at Beaute Ange in Kings Court makes him feel like he’s on center stage right now. “We also want our customers to feel great when they’re in the spotlight,â€? he added.

• ANA HERAS enjoys her job at Haddonfield’s WYSH: Wear Your Spirit for Humanity. “Greeting customers is the closest I have been to being on stage,â€? she said.

• The British Chip Shop’s DENNIS WOOD laughed, and then answered the question with a question, “When have I not taken center stage?â€? Dennis admitted that he loves being in the limelight. (His co-workers agreed.)

an outreach opportunity

 During the cold winter months, the fight against homelessness in Camden County takes on renewed urgency. The Interfaith Homeless Outreach Council (IHOC) has developed a Homeless Hospitality Network, which provides for homeless men from October thru May. The Network uses churches and synagogues for the overnight lodging of up to 12 men with volunteers providing meals and hosting the guests. The men are pre-screened for drug and alcohol abuse and receive counseling, life-skills training, and employment assistance. Grace Church in Haddonfield will host the men from Sun Feb 10 thru Sun Feb 24. The Church is seeking volunteers to act as evening, dinner, overnight, and weekend hosts. Assistance is also needed to provide, prepare, and serve dinner, and to provide transportation. To volunteer, call 429-0007.

Host families needed!

 Recently, the Haddonfield Japan Exchange Committee held its first meeting for prospective host families. At the meeting, 13 families expressed interest in hosting female students this summer. While the final number of visiting students has not been determined, it is anticipated that 20 Japanese students will visit Haddonfield this summer. If you missed the meeting, but are interested in hosting a student, contact Bill Brown at 429-4368 or billbrown08033@aol.com Students from Kasukabe Girls High School visited Haddonfield for two weeks during the summer of 2011. Last year, a group of 14 Haddonfield students visited Kasukabe for a two week period. This summer, the students from Kasukabe Girls High School will visit Haddonfield from Sat Jul 27 thru Thu Aug 8. The Haddonfield Japan Exchange Committee will plan activities for the students to enjoy during their visit; students from Haddonfield’s host families will have the opportunity to participate in these activities at no cost. In the past, the Kasukabe students have visited to Philadelphia, New York, Washington DC, and Baltimore. Other activities have included tubing on the Delaware River, sunning in Stone Harbor, and touring the Cowtown Rodeo; students have also visited universities, the Kimmel Center, and Wedgewood Swim Club. This summer’s schedule – which will include a welcome party, a cookout, and a farewell dinner – is currently being developed. Host families are expected to provide a bedroom or shared bedroom with someone of the same sex. Host families provide breakfast to the students each day and often dinner; there may be an occasional request for a brownbag lunch. The students expect to be treated as family members during their visit. Basic-language classes will be held for host families and cultural expectations will be explained prior to the students’ arrival. 429-4368

The Caregivers’ corner

 Resolve to make volunteering part of your family’s routine in 2013. Interfaith Caregivers relies on community support to provide the basic services – shopping, transportation, and companionship – that enable elderly and disabled residents to remain independent. Even a small, flexible time commitment can make a difference. Call 354-0298 or visit ifchaddons.org for information about the Caregivers’ next training session If you are unable to volunteer your time, then consider making a tax-deductible donation. Donating $1 per week can help Interfaith Caregivers continue to provide vital services. Donating $420 (just $1.15 per day) can fully underwrite services to one client for an entire year. Save the date! Interfaith Caregivers will team up with South Jersey Hot Chefs to host its spring fundraising event, a cocktail party themed “As Perfect as Black and White,” on Thu Mar 14 at Tavistock Country Club. Stay tuned to What’s On for details and ticket information or visit ifchaddons.org.

ROTARY REPORT

Students: Want to travel overseas? Read this! Rotary International invites interested students, age 15 to 18-1/2 years, to apply to participate in Rotary’s Short-Term Exchange Program. Participating students live with a matched host family in another country for three to six weeks during the summer vacation, under the sponsorship of a local Rotary club. The objective of the program is to foster world peace, international understanding, and goodwill by enabling students to see firsthand how “the other half” lives. The ESSEX Short-Term Family-to Family Exchange arranges for the participating student’s family to host a matching Rotary applicant. Exchanges can be arranged between the two families for not fewer than three weeks and not more than six weeks. The exchange with each country is for an equal amount of time, except for Argentina, Australia, Brazil, India, and South Africa. Those countries require that we host their applicants for a minimum of eight weeks during their summer months. During the exchange, the local student must not have a job or commitments that would interfere with the obligations of hosting. The cost of travel, clothing, personal expenses, and Rotary fees (which include insurance) are the responsibility of the participating students and their families. Travel to the host country is arranged by each student’s family communicating with the other student’s family, determining dates, times, and airlines to be booked for the exchange. Frequently, students who travel first accompany the other student on the return flight home. Candidates should be adaptable, flexible, well mannered, and want to experience life in other countries and cultures. Children of Rotarians and non-Rotarians are eligible. The application deadline is May 1, but those who are interested are encouraged to learn more about the program without delay, then make contact with their local Rotary club – sooner rather than later. For detailed information, visit: exchangestudent. org/EPShortTermExchangeProgram.cfm

 Did you know that Plays & Players was the first theatre in the Delaware Valley to premiere Number the Stars more than 13 years ago? Believing that the story’s message remains vitally important, Number the Stars will come to the Plays & Players’ stage once again. The stage version of Number the Stars was adapted from Lois Lowry’s Newbery Award-winning book. The show, set in 1943 Copenhagen, tells the story of 10-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her family and how they risked their lives to save Annemarie’s friend Ellen Rosen from the Nazis. Several weekday performances are planned for school groups. Public shows will take place on Wed Apr 17 at 7:30pm and on Sun Apr 28 at 2pm. Tickets cost $10. Call 429-8139 or go to haddonfieldplayers.com for more information.

Cookies are also being sold at Haddonfield’s Speedline station on Fridays from 4 to 7pm. Buy five boxes in one transaction and you’ll have a chance to win free cookies for a year! Cookies cost $4 per box. When you purchase a box of cookies, approximately $1 is returned to the local troop to fund operations, activities, and service projects. Approximately $2 is allocated to the Girl Scouts of Central and Southern New Jersey to support its mission to provide camping and leadership training to members of the council, especially those from underserved areas. The remaining $1 pays for product manufacturing. Details: Beth Bass at 216-9382 or b_montgomery@yahoo.com.

Observing lent

 The Haddonfield Council of Churches will sponsor a preaching series titled “Christian Peacemaking Versus the Culture of Violence” during the lenten season. Services will be held at Grace Church (19 Kings Hwy E, Haddonfield) on Tuesdays, from Feb 19 to Mar 26, at 12n. These services offer a unique opportunity for local tradespeople, professionals, shoppers, and visitors to pause and observe Lent. The services will feature preaching and music from many of Haddonfield’s churches. This year’s series will address the growing culture violence and the importance of a Christian response. The recent tragedy in Newtown CT has served as a sharp reminder that violence is an American problem that must be addressed. Those of all faiths are invited to attend.

let’s think spring!

 The annual Haddon Fortnightly Home and Garden Tour may not be until Fri May 3, but the club has already started househunting! If you are interested in opening your heart and home – or your spring garden – to those registered for the tour, call Tina at 428-0294. Haddonfield residents, and those living in the surrounding communities, are encouraged to volunteer their homes and gardens. The tour will include homes of all sizes. Tour guests will be given booties to wear (your floors will be safe) and homes will be manned at all times (you don’t have to be present during the tour). The proceeds from the annual tour are used to help maintain the clubhouse at the corner of Grove Street and Kings Highway E in Haddonfield.

a quest for character

Nominations are being accepted for the Julie R. Macier Character Award, cosponsored by the Board of Education and the PTA. The award was established in 1995 in memory of Julie Macier, an HMHS student who died in 1994 after a long and courageous battle with leukemia. Nominations for the award may be submitted by school administrators, staff members, teachers, students, members of the Board of Education, PTA members, and residents.
