Around the Towns Many children grow up dreaming about becoming professional athletes.
If you were a professional athlete, what sport would you play?
• COURTNEY DANIELS would be a professional dancer. She is a former Eagles cheerleader and is the Department Chair of Performing Arts at Paul VI High School. Her husband, TIM DANIELS, would have been a professional baseball player. They are pictured with their daughter COLLETTE (22 months) at Starbucks in Haddonfield.
• RICHARD, OLIVER (1), and KAREN LEASE (top row) are outdoor adventure enthusiasts visiting Haddonfield from their home in Alaska. Richard and Karen would choose to be “professional surfers or rock climbers.” SAMMY SIROVER (9), SINJIN LEASE (8), and THEA SPELLMEYER (9) (from bottom left) were interested in more traditional sports like tennis, basketball, and soccer.
• JIM COLE didn’t hesitate to declare that he would love to be a professional golfer. “You can make a lot of money and travel everywhere, like Hawaii!” he added. Jim is pictured in Kings Court with his wife, VERA COLE.

• JAMES HEWITT reported, “I was a National Junior Golfer as a teen. I peaked at 17. I played in a competition with a young Tom Kite and could see the difference in our play. Kite went on to become a professional golfer with the PGA tour.” James now considers himself to be “a declining accomplished golfer.” He lives in Haddonfield and enjoys playing for pleasure at Tavistock.
• MICHELLE LIN, SUE KIM, and CARMIE DOTTOLI are serious about their dreams of becoming “a Kendo athlete (a form of Asian samurai training),” a “marks-woman,” and “an American Ninja Warrior or master of hardcore parkour.” The three friends are pictured enjoying an afternoon at Starbucks in Haddonfield.
• KATHLEEN (16) and STACEY MURPHY would be loyal to their favorite sports to play if they were to go pro.“I would play basketball or field hockey,” reported Kathleen. Stacey said she would chose field hockey or track as a professional career. They are pictured here with their dog DAKOTA.

In an effort to protect the well-being of the borough’s citizens and the environment, Haddon Heights is participating in Project Medicine Drop. Residents are encouraged to leave their unwanted prescription medications and other drugs in the mailbox-style drop box in Haddon Heights Borough Hall at the Police Department courtesy window (625 Station Ave). Remove personal information before leaving medicine containers in the drop box. The service is free and anonymous – no questions asked. Turning in unwanted medications will help keep drugs out of the hands of substance abusers, prevent childhood poisonings, and protect local waterways. Following collection, medications will be disposed of safely. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are taken from medicine cabinets at home or from family and friends. Each day, approximately 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America. Unused medications should never be flushed or poured down the drain. Water reclamation facilities are not designed to remove all medicines from the waste stream. Various levels of antibiotics, anti-depressants, veterinary drugs, birth control hormones, and other substances have been detected in waterways across the United States. Research suggests that hormones found in pharmaceuticals may cause abnormalities in the reproductive cycles of fish. Antibiotics in the environment may contribute to the development of drug-resistant bacteria. For further information, call Captain Valvardi at 547-0614 x14 or visit njconsumeraffairs.gov/ meddrop. Jazz things up!
The Tri-State Jazz Society continues to sponsor concerts in the Haddonfield United Methodist Church’s Fellowship Hall (29 Warwick Road). The next concert will take place on Sun Jan 18 beginning at 2pm. Attendees will be treated to the musical stylings of Jerry Rife’s Rhythm Kings. Clarinetist Jerry Rife will lead a sextet committed to a hot-jazz style of performance associated with “revival Dixieland” – a return to the roots of New Orleans jazz. General admission for Jazz Society concerts is $20 per person. However, admission to your first Tri-State Jazz Society concert is only $10. If you decide to become a member ($20 per year), admission to future concerts will continue to cost you $10 each. High school and college students with ID – and children with adults – are admitted for free. The Tri-State Jazz Society was formed in 1988. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and presentation of traditional jazz. Volunteers are being sought to help with the Society’s ongoing public relations efforts and to assist during concert events in Haddonfield (admissions, ushers, refreshments, etc). To learn more about these opportunities, e-mail info@tristatejazz.org. Stay tuned for details about these spring events: • Sun May 3 – The Barbone Street Jazz Band will be back! • Sun May 31 – Neville Dickie and the Midiri Brothers Trio.
