 Encourage your kids to brush up on their foraging skills! The Y’s Men’s Club will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt in Crows Woods on Sat Apr 7 at 10am.

Participants, children ages one to 10 years, will be divided into four age groups. Boy and girl hunters will also be separated. Under the supervision of Y’s Men’s Club members, children will search for Easter treats. Several prize eggs will be hidden to keep things interesting!

No egg hunt would be complete without a visit from the Easter Bunny. The infamous harbinger of spring will take time out of his busy weekend schedule to meet, greet, and have

According to ysmen.org, the first Y’s Men’s Club was founded in Toledo OH in 1922 to support a local YMCA. Y’s Men International serves the worldwide YMCA, the largest non-governmental youth organization, and the communities in which it is present throughout the world.

Today, women are also full members of the club and family participation is encouraged in numerous activities.

 Did you know that Haddonfield Plays & Players was the first theatre in the Delaware Valley to premiere Number the Stars more than 12 years ago?

Believing that the story’s message remains vitally important, Plays & Players is bringing Number the Stars to the stage again this spring.

The stage version of Number the Stars was adapted from Lois Lowry’s Newbery Award-winning book. The story, set in 1943 Copenhagen, tells the story of how 10-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her family risked their lives to save Annemarie’s friend Ellen Rosen from the Nazis.

• GEORGE DIESER, owner of Carl’s Sunoco in Haddonfield, answered confidently, “Not much!” George added that he has never been asked.

The Y’s Men’s Club will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt in Crows Woods on Sat Apr 7.

What would it take to get you to dress up in a bunny costume?

• Carl’s Sunoco attendant and Collingswood Fire Company member TIM TREDANARI would dress as a bunny for a price.

“I’d do it for a car insurance payment,” he quipped. He admitted to helping Santa out at Christmas time – but he’s never been a bunny.

• CAROLINE BRASLOW and KRISTA WALKER, pictured working at Haddonfield’s Pretty Sweet Bakery, shared a difference of opinion on the matter. Caroline winked when she replied, “I would do it for a martini!”

Baker and business owner Krista laughed, “Someone would just have to ask me and I’d do it!” She added that she would sing as part of the deal.

• MATT PORTO and Breadboard co-worker TJ DEXTER agreed that it wouldn’t take much for them to dress up! Always up for fun, Matt revealed, “I’ve been the Tooth Fairy, a woman, and a bunch of other things.”

TJ suggested, “We should have the Breadboard Bunnies.”

• CONNIE GIULIETTI, owner of Haddonfield’s Tony’s Pizza, would dress up for her kids. “They are not little anymore, though,” she commented. “Maybe one day I’ll do it for my grandchildren,” she said.

• Haddon Heights’ Tis So Sweet Bakery’s KATE MCNULTY laughed, “It would take absolutely nothing for me to dress up as the bunny.” Donning a costume, which was handmade by her grandmother, is a family tradition.

“I’ll do anything to make the kids happy,” she replied.

Historical Society happenings

 The Historical Society of Haddonfield will host its annual Candlelight Dinner on Wed Mar 28 at Tavistock Country Club. The evening will begin with a cocktail reception at 6pm. Dinner will commence at 7pm; the evening’s program will follow.

Ed Mauger, a former Haddonfield resident and the founder of “Philadelphia on Foot,” will be the keynote speaker. Mauger’s innovative tours – along with his wit, warmth, and storytelling – have earned him the reputation of being “Philadelphia’s favorite colonial guide.” He has appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America, as well as PBS, and The History Channel. Mauger is the Vice President of the Elfreth’s Alley Association and the author of Philadelphia, Then and Now. A retired Associate Dean from Rutgers Camden, Mauger will cover Philadelphia’s historical celebrities from William Penn and Ben Franklin ... to Nucky Johnson. Guests will get the inside scoop – the stuff not covered in history books!

Spend an evening learning about Philadelphia’s first “Rambo” and the “bachelor tax.” Mauger may even discuss his newest tour. In honor of the political season, he is offering “Exercise Your Rights,” a walking tour for staunch conservatives (it only features right turns).

A lucky day for oyster lovers

Here comes the sun ... and first fridays

 Say “goodbye” to winter and “hello” to spring with the help of Haddonfield’s First Fridays. The events will begin on Apr 6, and will be held each month – from 5 to 9pm – thru October. Be sure to visit the borough’s retail district for outdoor dining, shopping, art, and curbside entertainment.

The entertainment line-up for the 2012’s inaugural First Friday event includes Albert Sarnese, New Generation, and Cold Blue Electric.

Markeim offers more than meets the eye

 The schedule at Markeim Arts Center (104 Walnut Street, Haddonfield) is heating up!

• Markeim has teamed up with the Artist Cultural Exchange (ACX) to bring an exhibit called “Diverse Artists, Diverse Media” to the center thru Fri Mar 30.

ACX is a group of professional artists who strive to promote the inclusiveness of the arts. Work for this exhibition was selected by the curator of Hopkins House Gallery, Professor Bruce Garrity.

• MamaSan will rock Markeim Arts Center with its unique blend of acoustic and electric covers and original songs on Fri Mar 30.

At its March 1 meeting, the Board of Education adopted a budget based upon a 0% tax levy increase for the 2012-13 school year.

The Budget recently received approval by the county education office. The public hearing for this budget will be on March 22 at 7:30pm in the High School library.

Due to an increase in state aid, the School District was able to maintain and add to current staffing and programs, improve facilities, upgrade and develop state-of-the-art technology initiatives, obtain and integrate a dynamic language arts curriculum, and implement a new teacher/administrator evaluation system.

All of this was made possible by the dedicated efforts of Board of Education members, administrators, teachers, District staff, and most of all, the community of Haddonfield.

SPRING mUSIcAl: THe WIZ On Saturday, March 10, the HMHS Drama Club gave its final performance of “The Wiz,” a musical adaptation of “The Wizard of Oz.” The HMHS Drama Club and Mr. Scott Glading, the Drama Club’s advisor, received much praise for these performances.

The Drama Club used elaborate costumes and special effect settings to enhance the musical experience of very talented students through their acting and vocalizations.

A special thanks again to “Lights, Camera, Action,” a fundraising organization and initiative to upgrade the High School auditorium. Renovations will begin shortly in adding a new sound system along with other HMHS auditorium projects.

TUITION PROGRAM bENEFITS bUDGET, bOOSTS DISTRICT’S REPUTATION The tuition program that welcomes non-Haddonfield students has helped the School District keep a lid on the tax levy. It has also spread the District’s reputation as a leader in academics and after-school activities.

Ten new tuition students are expected to join our High School this fall. Strong demand at the ninth grade level has necessitated the creation of a wait list. Interest is growing for Middle School placements also, with several new students anticipated there.

School officials, however, are committed to keeping class sizes at levels that won’t compromise instructional quality.

Haddonfield’s Tuition Program is based in the concept that filling classroom seats will add minimally to costs, while boosting revenue significantly. For 2011-12, the District projects tuition revenue at nearly $300,000.

Tuition students in grades six through 12 are accepted for the general education program only. School principals review records of prospective students to be sure they can succeed in Haddonfield’s academic environment.

The promotional push for tuition students has spawned a beneficial side effect: More people in South Jersey and Philadelphia are learning what Haddonfield offers.

“Our school offers the small-community setting many parents want, and our academics are at the top, compared with larger schools in the area,” High School Principal Michael Wilson said. “We are a very attractive option for parents and students who want the best of both worlds.”

Those who wish to attend Post 38’s 72nd annual Last Man’s Dinner, on Mon Apr 2, are encouraged to purchase tickets without delay.

Each year, the Last Man’s Club of the Haddonfield American Legion Post 38 conducts this event to honor the veterans who have served our country in the past as well as today’s active-duty personnel. The Last Man’s Club was created to preserve the memories of our wars, to pay fitting tribute to our departed comrades, to foster and perpetuate good fellowship ... and to eat, drink, and be merry.

little league lowdown

 The Haddonfield Little League Opening Day Parade and Ceremony is scheduled for Sat Mar 24 at 10am.

The procession will step off at the First Presbyterian Church in Haddonfield (20 Kings Hwy E). Children who are marching should arrive no later than 9:45am.

The players will follow the Fire Department through Haddonfield to the Little League Complex.

At the complex, two commemorative trees will be dedicated to Little League volunteers Don Ryan and Walt “Buck” Russell. The American Legion will raise the US and POW flags while a bugler plays the National Anthem.

Mayor Columbi will throw out the first pitch – her grandson Max Pollack will catch. Games will get underway at approximately 11am.

The Baseball Bistro will be open and a Haddonfield Little League apparel sale will beckon shoppers.

Haddonfield Sings

 Haddonfield Sings! – an annual musical extravaganza celebrating the choral arts – will take place on Tue Apr 3, beginning at 7:30pm, in the Haddonfield Memorial High School Auditorium. Admission will be free; doors will open at 7pm.

Performers will include the Sixth Grade Chorus; the High School’s Concert, Treble, and Chamber Choirs; Voicemale; CoEd; and Totally Treble. During the finale, “When The Saints Go Marching In” will be performed by all.

The evening’s guest artist, Rebecca Sayer Kain, is a graduate of Haddonfield Memorial High School and the University of the Arts.

Golf outing

 Haddonfield Little League’s 2012 Golf Outing will be held on Mon May 14 at Woodcrest Country Club in Cherry Hill (woodcrestcc.com).

The event will begin with registration and lunch at 12n. The shotgun start will take place at 1pm. A casual dinner, with open bar, will commence at 6pm.

 The Haddonfield Lions Club will hold its annual Pasta Bowl on Sun Mar 25, from 4 to 7pm, in the gymnasium at Christ the King School (164 Hopkins Ave, Haddonfield). Tickets cost $10 for adults; $5 for children.

The buffet dinner will offer an array of choices.

Culture at the clubhouse

 The April meeting of the Evening Membership Department will be held on Tue Apr 10, at 7:30pm, at the clubhouse (Kings Hwy E and Grove Street, Haddonfield). Author Donna Gottardi – a professor of sociology specializing in social problems, diversity, immigration, Spanish, and gender studies – will discuss teaching in exotic locations.

Gottardi became curious about world cultures as an undergraduate student at Rutgers University. After graduation, she spent a year teaching English in Manta, Ecuador before returning to earn a master’s degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania.

Gottardi’s concern for the well-being of the underserved and misunderstood populations in developing countries has fueled her visits to Mexico, Turkey, Vietnam, and India. Gottardi’s recent work in rural northeast China inspired her first published book, Raining Cats and Rats. For more information about this program, contact Lynda at 429-4901.

› In mid-February, the Haddonfield community pulled out all the stops to support local students Jason Garstkiewicz and Colin Hough. Each had been recently diagnosed with cancer.

As the difficult news spread across town, a group of parents familiar with Go4theGoal’s Lace-Up 4 Pediatric Cancer campaign reached out to Go4theGoal to order a few hundred neon-yellow shoelaces to distribute to kids to show both support for the boys and raise pediatric cancer awareness. Within a week, 7,000 pairs of laces were sold and $30,000 was raised.

Those who wish to take their support one step farther are encouraged to participate in Go4theGoal’s “Richard’s Run” on Sun May 6, at 9am.

Athletes will begin the 5k run/walk at the Cooper River Park track (North Park Drive, Pennsauken) and enjoy a scenic course all the way to the finish line.

The event will be held rain or shine.

Pre-register for $25 – and be guaranteed a t-shirt – by visiting go4thegoal.org. Those who register on race day will be charged $30.

Participants are asked to arrive at the track at least an hour before the race. Registration will be held from 7:30 to 8:45am.

Refreshments will be available after the race.

Awards will be given to the top male and female finishers in various age categories.

Proceeds will benefit the Go4theGoal Foundation in its mission to fund research support children and families affected by cancer.

 Chicago had its cows ... and soon Haddonfield will have its dawgs!

In an effort to raise funds for technological advances throughout the Haddonfield School District, Central School gym teacher Sean Sweeney is teaming up with the Haddonfield Educational Trust to start a public art project which will dress the borough with bulldawg statues.

According to the Dawg Daze Web site, “The plan is to use local artists, students, and alumni of Haddonfield to create the designs and put their ideas onto a very different medium ... life-size works of art will become a permanent fixture in the community with plaques as part of the display to commemorate and eternally thank the sponsor and artist.

After a four- to sixmonth viewing period, the duplicate dawgs will be auctioned off to raise funds for the future implementation of technology in the Haddonfield School District.”

Twelve sponsorships opportunities are available. For $1500, individuals and groups can sponsor a statue and have their name posted on permanent signage. Imagine the bragging rights!

 Haddonfield globetrotter Joseph Routon is preparing to showcase photographs taken on his travels.

The exhibit will take place in the parlor of the First Presbyterian Church, (20 Kings Hwy E, Haddonfield), thru Mon Apr 9.

Routon recently returned from India, Burma, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand where he photographed the faces of children.

The exhibit will include photographs of young Buddhist monks and nuns at the Kalaywa Tawya Monastery.

Routon’s images have appeared on the cover of Budget Travel, in advertising for the Smithsonian Travel Division, in Sherman’s Travel magazine, and in the United Nations’ publication, The Interdependent. Routon is also a professional portrait painter.

The exhibition will be open to the public on weekdays, from 9:30am to 4:30pm; and on Sunday morning from 9am to 12n.

Tree chatter

 Planting and dedicating a tree can be a powerful way to remember a loved one or commemorate a special event. Planting a tree in a public area is can also be a valuable contribution to the community.

This spring, commemorative trees will be planted on Tanner Street, on Kings Hwy E, and in front of Haddonfield Memorial High School. Additional sites may also become available and suggestions will be considered by the Shade Tree Commission.

A $1,000 minimum donation is requested per tree. Engraved brass plaques may be created to mark the trees.

A quest for character

 Do you know a 8th grader from Haddonfield Middle School or a senior from the High School who exhibits courage, faith, honesty, integrity, responsibility, compassion, sense of humor, patience, respect, and more?

Nominations are being accepted for the Julie R. Macier Character Award, co-sponsored by the Board of Education and the PTA. The award was established in 1995 in memory of Julie Macier, an HMHS student who died in 1994 after a long and courageous battle with leukemia.

Nominations for the award may be submitted by school administrators, staff members, teachers, students, members of the Board of Education, PTA members, and residents.  The Third Annual Chicken Runs at Midnight is scheduled for the evening of Fri May 4 at the Haddonfield High School.

Last year, thousands of people rallied behind the Townsend family.

The Canuso Foundation is seeking a repeat performance in 2012.

This year, the proceeds from the big event will benefit the family of Jason Garstkiewicz, a 13year-old Haddonfield resident recently diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer.

Proceeds will also benefit the family of Colin Hough, a 14year-old Haddonfield Memorial High School freshman who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer of the connective tissue called rhabdomyosarcoma.

Celebrate National library Week

 Whether you are a job seeker looking for resources to land your dream job, a parent looking for free activities for your kids, or a student searching for your next favorite book, you owe it to yourself to visit the Haddonfield Public Library!

Libraries have historically served as our nation’s great equalizers of knowledge. The strength of libraries has always been the diversity of their collections and commitment to serving all people.

Since it’s inception in 1958, National Library Week has been recognized by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. This year’s National Library Week theme is “You Belong @ Your Library.”

Haddonfield Public Library seems to be celebrating all month long with special programs! Programs are free and co-sponsored by the Haddonfield Friends of the Library. Call 429-1304 to register.

Here’s the calendar line up: • The Library’s Board of Trustees will meet on Tue Mar 27 and on Tue Apr 24, at 8am, in the New Jersey Room.

• On Fri Mar 30, from 1 to 2pm, card holders are invited to explore Career Transitions Online. Career Transitions is a complete, self-paced application that walks job-seekers from assessing strengths and interests, to creating a resume, to exploring new opportunities, to improving their chances of landing a job. Basic computer skills are needed for this class.

• The library is again partnering with Camden County College and the New Jersey State Library to assist those who are looking to make a career move. The first class, “Using the Internet for Employment,” will be held on Mon Apr 2 from 10:30am to 2:30pm. Topics will include basic Internet use and Web-based job searching.

The second class, on Mon Apr 16, from 10:30am to 2:30pm, will focus on the use of e-mail during a job search. Topics will include proper usage of e-mail, e-mail etiquette, and on-line applications.

• The library will hold its ever-popular Fine Free Week from Fri Apr 6 thru Sat Apr 14. Bring overdue items – and perhaps a non-perishable food donation for the Food Bank of South Jersey – and all will be forgiven!

• The library is also celebrating e-books and reading. Drop in on Tue Apr 10, between 6 to 7pm, to learn about using e-book readers with the OverDrive eBook Library. No registration is needed.

• Find new ways to create a great resume with the Job and Career Accelerator or the Testing and Education Reference Center on Wed Apr 11, from 11 to 12 pm. No registration is needed.

• On Wed Apr 11, at 7 pm, Howard Gillette, a retired History Professor from Rutgers University and noted Camden County historian, will present “Camden and the Rest of Us,” a discussion based on his book, Camden After the Fall: Decline and Renewal in a Post-Industrial City.

Gillette will autograph copies of his book ($20).

• Climb your family tree on Thu Apr 12, from 1 to 2 pm, with the library’s genealogy databases, Ancestry.com and Heritage Quest. No registration is necessary.

• On Tue Apr 17, at 7 pm, Toby Zinman will return to the library to discuss The Lost City of Z by David Grann. A best seller in 2009, The Lost City of Z explores Grann’s obsession with early 20th century expeditions into the Brazilian Amazon by the legendary British explorer Percy Fawcett.

Zinman is a theatre critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer and a professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She recently returned from her second trip to the Amazon.

• The Friends of the Library invite you to join them on Sun Apr 22, at 1:30pm, at the Markeim Art Center. Acclaimed author and genealogist Megan Smolenyak will discuss and sign copies of her newest book Hey, America, Your Roots are Showing. Part forensic scientist, part master sleuth, Megan Smolenyak has solved some of America’s oldest and most fascinating genealogical mysteries. Smolenyak has appeared on Good Morning America, the Today Show, the Early Show.

The Celebrations Association is at it again!

 The members of the Haddonfield Celebrations Association are hard at work planning a stunning array of events for 2012 – including another unparalleled Independence Day Celebration (the Forth of July Parade and Fireworks), the Halloween Parade, and the Christmas Tree Lighting.

These events are funded through community donations. Your help is needed. Historically, only 10-percent of Haddonfield’s households make contributions; the Celebrations Association is looking to the other 90-percent to help make 2012 shine.

“The iPad and other forms of assistive technology are revolutionizing how people learn, communicate, and accomplish a wide range of tasks.”

Bancroft’s hands-on workshops are intended to help parents maximize their child’s abilities, independence, and quality of life.

Jazzercise combines elements of jazz dance, resistance training, Pilates, yoga, kickboxing, and more to create an effective workout for people of all ages and fitness levels. No experience is necessary and the 60-minute classes can be adjusted to accommodate the abilities of each individual.

The cost is $10 per class for walk-ins; different monthly packages and rates are available. To participate, simply show up to a class a few minutes early to register. A portion of the proceeds benefit the Lutheran Church.
