A prescription for a safe community

 In an effort to protect the well-being of the borough’s citizens and the environment, Haddon Heights is participating in Project Medicine Drop. Residents are encouraged to leave their unwanted prescription medications and other drugs in the mailbox-style drop box in Haddon Heights Borough Hall at the Police Department courtesy window (625 Station Ave). Remove personal information before leaving medicine containers in the drop box. The service is free and anonymous – no questions asked. Turning in unwanted medications will help keep drugs out of the hands of substance abusers, prevent childhood poisonings, and protect local waterways. Following collection, medications will be disposed of safely. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are taken from medicine cabinets at home or from family and friends. Each day, approximately 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America. Unused medications should never be flushed or poured down the drain. Water reclamation facilities are not designed to remove all medicines from the waste stream. Various levels of antibiotics, anti-depressants, veterinary drugs, birth control hormones, and other substances have been detected in waterways across the United States. Research suggests that hormones found in pharmaceuticals may cause abnormalities in the reproductive cycles of fish. Antibiotics in the environment may contribute to the development of drug-resistant bacteria. For further information, call Captain Valvardi at 547-0614 x14 or visit njconsumeraffairs.gov/ meddrop.

plant a tree for the Tricentennial

 Recently, the Haddonfield Shade Tree Commission announced its Tricentennial Tree Sale, an opportunity to purchase ornamental and shade trees for planting in the home garden or donating for streetside or public park plantings. The tree sale will continue thru mid-September; it will culminate on Sat Oct 5, Tricentennial Tree Day. On Tree Day a community tree planting and celebration will take place. The Shade Tree Commission has selected 15 trees – of various shapes and sizes – which are suitable for various growing conditions. Planting a tree is an ideal way to commemorate a family event or simply enhance the beauty of a yard. While the Tricentennial Tree Program is not intended to replace Haddonfield’s planting initiatives, it will provide an opportunity to supplement the shade tree plantings at a time when the borough’s focus is on the removal of blight-stricken red oak and pin oak trees. Trees offered through this promotion will prepped, pruned, and labeled as Tricentennial Trees. Donated trees are tax-deductible and will be planed by trained teams. Trees purchased for private property will be ready for pick-up and planting on or before Sat Oct 5. Trees are priced at $125 each. A limited selection of premium trees are priced at $350. All participants will be honored in print and online for their support. Records of this event will be presented to the Historical Society of Haddonfield for posterity. To learn more, visit the Shade Tree Commission tables in Kings Court on Sat May 18. Volunteers are being recruited for the tree-planting effort. Artisans will exhibit a wide range of arts and crafts, including ceramics, glass, jewelry, wood, fiber, metal, paper, drawings, paintings, photography, and wearable art.  The Celebrations Association has made it easy for you to make donations and get late-breaking news about upcoming association-sponsored events. Simply visit haddonfield-celebrations.org. Members of the Haddonfield Celebrations Association are hard at work planning a stunning array of events for 2013 – including another Independence Day Celebration (the Forth of July Parade and fireworks), the Halloween Parade, and the Christmas Tree Lighting. These events are funded through community donations. Historically, only 10-percent of Haddonfield’s households make contributions; the Celebrations Association is looking to the other 90-percent to help make 2013 shine. Recently, the Celebrations Association mailed a letter to each household in the borough asking for donations to help finance the Haddonfield 4th of July Parade and fireworks. If you received it, mail your donation – in the envelope provided – as soon as possible. Fair organizers are combining old favorites with new surprises. Teens: Stretch with yoga

 Back by popular demand – another Teen Yoga Workshop will take place on Fri May 31, from 4 to 5:30pm, at Anjali Power Yoga (130 Haddon Ave, Westmont). See what the buzz is about! This class – tailored to the needs of tweens and teens in 5th thru 8th grade – will introduce attendees to vinyasa yoga and meditation techniques. The class will be fun and noncompetitive while promoting strength, flexibility, focus, confidence, body awareness, inner strength, and relaxation. Yoga encourages love and respect for self and others – give it a try! The cost of the workshop is $15, payable at the door. Ten-percent of the proceeds from this event will be donated to Help Women and Children Now. Help Women and Children Now is a Haddonfield-based organization started by Lisa and Steve Hurly in honor of their son Stephen Michael. Stephen Michael was born prematurely and suffered from heart disease; he died when he was five-weeks-old after teaching his parents the true meaning of hope and love. Help Women and Children Now was created to raise funds to benefit research in pediatric heart disease, pediatric cancer, and premature birth. The organization also provides home makeovers for families experiencing medical crises.

IN MEMORIAM: ROBERT J. TWITCHELL

A Very Personal Reflection by Bill Reynolds

Bob Twitchell has been my friend it seems like forever. A generation older, he grew up around the corner from our house. Probably my first memory of him was a thin guy in an Army uniform having a very serious talk with my father on our front porch sometime during World War II. People sat on porches a lot during the warmer months in those unairconditioned days, and passersby would often stop to chat. A little later during my boyhood years, I would run into Bob from time to time, sometimes having a beer with Charlie Fisher – again on a porch – often on a warm Saturday around noon time. I hung around the Fishers quite a bit as a kid. They were like a second set of parents. When I got to be 16, I began to be invited to join the Saturday colloquium, usually having earned my beer by spending the morning doing chores for Uncle Charlie. We kids had a lot of honorary aunts and uncles in those days. It was not considered respectful for kids to call people who were our folks’ ages by their first names, even if the elders wanted us to, but “Aunt ____” or “Uncle ____” worked just fine for everyone. Bob was always “Bob” though. He was too young to be an “uncle.” I got a lot of pretty positive counseling from Bob and Uncle Charlie in those side porch sessions. The beer made me feel mature and accepted, and the advice, never imparted directly, but always through more subtle communication, set me in good stead down the years. I especially remember one very clear message: If you are going to drink, always drink like a gentleman. As I grew older, I remembered that advice ... most of the time. I only learned from Bob recently that he started college somewhere in the south but had been drafted early in his college career. When he came home from the war, he wasn’t sure of his direction. He went to my Dad – his former high school principal – for advice about what to do. Dad suggested that Bob check out Lafayette College, his own alma mater. Bob told me that when he went there for a visit a couple of days later, he was informed by the registrar that he had already been accepted. The registrar said, “Mr. Reynolds called us, and it’s all arranged.” As Bob said, “And that was that.” Later, after Bob graduated from Lafayette, he came back to town with his beautiful wife Jan. He became a manufacturers rep and distributor for the Dempster Dumpster Company, and remained with them for the rest of his career. His son Jim along with Jim’s wife Patty now run the business. Bob and Jan built their dream house in what had been the apple orchard at Bell’s old farm and settled in to raise their family and live their lives.

Down the years since then, Bob’s and Jan have both been sterling examples of what good citizenship is all about. They have individually served – quietly and without pretense – on many local boards and committees. Most notable were Bob’s service as Planning Board Chairman and Jan’s as a school board member. But that really doesn’t tell the story, because they have been active moving forces in every positive development in our community for the last 60 years, never for self aggrandizement, simply because it was the right thing to do. New school buildings, parks, playgrounds, the dinosaur, local elections – you name it, there was a Twitchell involved. A friend and the wife of a fellow Rotarian remarked recently that ever since getting to know the Twitchells she has viewed them and their family – a generation older – as models for the course she would like to see her life take. “Yes,” her husband chimed in, “Bob was the guy I’d check my compass against when I was younger. He always pointed in the right direction.” I think a lot of us felt that way. I suspect that one of Bob’s most lasting impacts on Haddonfield was his service in getting the Hi- Speedline depressed. He was just starting on the planning board as the town’s battle with the DRPA was joined. At lunch recently, he remarked, “Those guys were really tough to deal with, but eventually they came around.” A typically understated and self-effacing Bob comment. Steady, sober, reliable, honest, honorable – all are words that spring to mind when I think of Bob. His passing will leave a big hole in the fabric of our community, and it will leave a big hole in my life. He has been a wonderful friend and a trusted adviser over a great many years. As someone said upon learning the news, “When I think of Bob, I always think of the word “gentleman.” I couldn’t agree more. Bob was truly a gentle man. He was not especially imposing physically, but in the life of our community he was a giant. I will miss him ... a lot.
