The Borough will come alive with art, music, food, and fun for all on Sat May 29, from 10am to 5pm, when Collingswood Partners hosts the 31st annual May Fair.

What began in 1979 as a small outdoor art show, has evolved into a ten-block-long spring extravaganza encompassing most of the business district along Haddon Avenue.

Blues, rock, folk music, and more will pour from the Fair’s five stages. At the same time, more

What are your summer plans?

• Rita’s employees, HANNAH GARDINER and BRENNA SANFORD, have already formulated their summers plans.

Hannah revealed, “I’ll be working here all summer to save for a car.” Brenna answered, “I’m going to the beach and I’ll hang out with friends. I’m also going to Crystal Lake in Pennsylvania with my family – it’s a tradition.”

• JULIE DENGLER of Haddon Township explained, “I just want the kids to have fun. We’ll hang out at the pool and do lots of day trips.” If Julie’s son, GRAHAM, had his way, the family would venture to “Las Vegas for the big PEZ convention.”

Graham is a 3rd grader at Van Sciver Elementary and an avid PEZ collector.

Daniel said, “I’ll try to get up to Washington DC, and Ocean City, and we’ll go to our lake house in Pennsylvania.” Daniel’s brother, Christopher, has vowed to “never miss watching a Phillies game.”

He also plans to hang out with friends.

 The Borough’s All Town Musical for 2010 is Anything Goes.

This classic boy-meets-girl tail has remained a croud pleaser over the years. The amusing storyline of Anything Goes is made complete with an enchanting score by Cole Porter.

Audiences continue to adore Broadway standards like “It’s De-Lovely,” “Friendship,” “I Get A Kick Out Of You,” “Anything Goes,” and “You’re the Top.” With lots of big production numbers and parts for actors of all ages, Anything Goes may be as much fun to perform as it is to watch.

Involvement in the All Town Musical remains a great way to meet neighbors and make new friends. Auditions for Anything Goes will be held on Tue Jun 15 at the Community Center.

Collingswood Community Theatre encourages participation by entire families and promises fun for all. No prior experience is necessary. Cast members must be at least eight-years-old and be borough residents. Children under 15 must have a responsible adult in the cast who will supervise them.

The show will be performed Thu Oct 7 thru Sat Oct 9 and on Fri Oct 15 and Sat Oct 16. Cast members must be available for all performances as well as dress rehearsals to be held on Mon Oct 4 and Tue Oct 5. Rehearsals will run from midJuly through the first week of August and threedays per week in September.

Audition packets – which include registration forms, character descriptions, audition songs and all necessary information – will be available in the Community Center lobby beginning Mon May 24.

There is a $70 registration fee per person; fees are capped at $140 per family.

Last month, Middle School students at Haddonfield Friends School ...

• LANGUAGE ARTS: Spent a day at Hopkins Pond for the “Voices from the Land Project,” a celebration of language, art, performance, the natural world and the human spirit. The project encourages students to collaborate with other students in exploring their innate abilities as artists, listeners, and communicators to appreciate and celebrate diversity in all its forms, both natural and cultural. The students explored nature, created visual art and photographs, and wrote and performed poetry. The experience developed each student’s gifts for oral language, performance, and creativity.

• SCIENCE: Participated in the Coriell Institute Science Fair and “cleaned up.” Of the 20 who entered, 14 won awards.

Nine students went on to participate at the regional level in the Delaware Valley Science Fair; three of them won awards.

• Photographed points of interest around town as part of their Photography elective.

• Exploded “stuff” and participated in a variety of science activities as part of their Chemistry elective.

• CIVICS & HISTORY: Traveled by Amtrak train to Washington DC for two days. They visited the Capitol and were shown around by interns from Congressman Rob Andrew’s office. They toured the Holocaust Museum as a part of their study of World War II. They visited the National Air and Space Museum as a conclusion to study of the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union, and of the impact that aeronautics had in World War II. • SERVICE: Prepared the Haddonfield Friends School Pasta Dinner, and served and entertained 150 members of the School community.

• Participated in a 5k race to benefit the Go for the Goal Foundation, benefiting teens who have cancer.

• Spent Wednesday mornings with their “Kindergarten Buddies” – reading, playing and working together.

• Did all the “regular stuff” as well.

PFLAG is here

 Recently the national organization Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) announced the formation of a chapter in Collingswood.

The chapter – which is dedicated to providing support and information regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex issues – holds meetings on the fourth Monday of each month at the Public Library, from 6 to 8:30pm.

The next meeting is scheduled for May 24.

Representatives from the Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance (MANNA), Meg Rider and Robert Saxon, will serve as guest speakers. The regularly scheduled support-group session will follow.

PFLAG promotes the health and well being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered persons, their families, and friends through support, education, and advocacy. PFLAG provides an opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity while helping create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity.

 Together with the Ecological Research and Development Group, young artists from all over the globe have come together to create an exhibit honoring the wondrous horseshoe crab.

A free opening reception for the Horseshoe Crab/ Papermaking Children’s Exhibition will take place at Perkins Center for the Arts (30 Irvin Avenue) on Sat Jun 12 from 10am to 12n. The exhibition, which will run thru Sat Jun 26, is free and open to the public.

The Ecological Research and Development Group is a non-profit organization that works to conserve the world’s four remaining horseshoe crab species.

Fiber artist Winnie Radolan guided students’ production of visual and literary art works depicting the 350-millionyear-old species.

Reproductions of the students’ work have become part of the traveling art exhibition.

The student artists range from five to 18 years of age.

Their works were selected from over 500 submissions and can be viewed at horseshoecrab.org.

Haddon Ave is sparkling with purple lights and during school art classes, children are decorating luminary bags in remembrance of loved ones lost to cancer.

In addition, local businesses are collecting donations for purple sun and moon sponsor cards.  Helping Other People Evolve, Inc, known as H.O.P.E., is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting the recently widowed. Participants are given support and encouragement while evolving through the natural stages of grief.

The Collingswood H.O.P.E. chapter meets on Thursdays from 10 to 11:30am at the Camden County Division of Senior Services (700 Browning Road, Suite 11).

There are four sessions of the H.O.P.E. program, each with different topics so that members can continue throughout the year without repeating discussions.

Groups of eight to 12 people are assembled at the beginning of each session. Participants learn about healing and growth, goal setting, exploring independence, building a personal support network, and more.

 A municipal revaluation is being performed to assess all real property. During revaluation both the interior and exteriors of property are physically inspected. Inspections are underway and will conclude in August 2010. u Haddon Township

Tree Trot

 The Saddler’s Woods Conservation Association will host its inaugural Tree Trot: 5k Run and 1-Mile Walk on Sat May 22, rain or shine, to benefit the Woods.

The course will start at the Saddler’s Woods Volunteer Area (250 MacArthur Blvd), continue down MacArthur Blvd to Cuthbert Blvd, wind through Newton Lake Park, and back. The walk will kick-off at 8:45am and the run will begin at 9am. Food will be provided by Saladworks and DQ events will provide timing results. Gently worn footwear will be collected for Soles4Souls.

Prizes will be awarded in various categories. The first 200 participants to sign-up will receive a free t-shirt and a red oak seedling from Pinelands Nursery.

The cost to participate is $20 if pre-registered and $25 on the day of the race. Proceeds will aid the Saddler’s Woods Conservation Association in executing restoration, education, and research projects.

› Emmanuel United Methodist Church will host Vacation Bible School for children from Sun Jul 25 thru Thu Jul 29 from 6:30 to 8:30pm. This year’s theme will be “Superheroes with the Ultimate Superhero Being: Jesus Christ.”

 The Poetry in the Park series, sponsored by the Camden County Cultural and Heritage Commission, is held the second Monday of the month, rain or shine, from 7 to 9pm at the Hopkins House (250 Park Drive S). The event is held inside during inclement weather.

The series showcases new and emerging South Jersey poets and spoken-word artists and features an open mic for all ages along with special guests.

These billy goats will get gruff

 Young theatre buffs can’t help but be mesmerized when the curtain rises on a children’s production at the Ritz (915 White Horse Pike). Month after month, professional and emerging artists bring fairy-tale magic to the stage of the refurbished 1920’s theatre.

Now playing: Aladdin and Princess Jasmine.

When a poor boy named Aladdin finds a magic lantern, he wishes for the Sultan’s daughter’s hand in marriage. Will he be bold and clever enough to win Princess Jasmine’s heart?

Performances will be held on Fri May 14 at 10am and Sat May 15 at 10am and 1pm.

Next up on the schedule is Three Billy Goats Gruff to be held Wed Jun 2 thru Sat Jun 5 at 10am with an additional matinee on Sat Jun 5 at 1pm. Kids will be enthralled by the story of three billy goats who try to cross a bridge to get to a pasture. During their expedition, they discover a hungry troll living under the bridge. Which goat will he choose to gobble up?

Library series

 Senior Citizens United Community Services is seeking volunteers to help frail, homebound seniors.

Helpers are urgently needed for the Food Shelf and Shut-In Shopping programs.

The program provides twice a month grocery shopping services for seniors who are unable to go to the store on their own.

Volunteer shoppers will be matched with clients in their own geographic region. An orientation is held prior to being assigned a client. To participate, call 456-1121.

 Check out the Public Library on Thursday evenings.

On second Thursdays, beginning at 7pm, authors present their works at the Library and answer questions. Then, on fourth Thursdays, beginning at 7pm, the Library hosts films.

Following the audio-visual presentations, someone connected to the project speaks to the group. These programs are free. Each speaker has a local connection.

• Those involved with film or video will be featured on fourth Thursdays: On May 27, the acclaimed documentary Revolution ’67 will be shown. The film recreates the six days in 1967 when Newark experienced one of the deadliest racial disturbances in recent US history. The directors, MaryLou and Jerome Bongiorno, and a Temple University History Professor, Dr Bryant Simon, will discuss the film.

• Writers on Second Thursdays will include: Novelist and Collingswood resident, Matthew Quick, will speak on Jun 10. Quick is best known for his critically acclaimed novel, The Silver Linings Playbook. On Jun 10, Quick will present his debut novel for young adults, Sorta Like a Rock Star.
