The Moyne Shire com-munity will be asked to share its views on offshore wind devel-opments to help inform council’s advocacy position.

Mayor Cr Ian Smith said while council would not be involved in decisions on permits, it could play an important role in advocacy to try and derive the best possible outcome for the community.

“The federal government has declared the zone and that may lead to developments in that zone,” Cr Smith said.

“We want to hear from the community about itsthoughts on offshore wind developments, associated infrastructure and what direct economic benefits council should advocate for.”

WARRNAMBOOL BRIDGE CLUB

WARRNAMBOOL Bridge Club members meet regularly at Brauerander Reserve to play friendly duplicate bridge competitions.

Cr Smith said Moyne Shire Council was the state’s renewable energy powerhouse and had been involved in renewable developments and planning processes for a quarter of a century.

“Moyne is in a unique position to provide advice about the on-the ground experiences our communities have had with renewable developments and what we would like to see as standard practice for new developments,” Cr Smith said.

“Our teams have 25 years of experience with renewable energy developments – we have very strong connections with governments and the industry, we are uniquely placed to provide strong advocacy on behalf of the community. “To do that, we want to know the

community’s thoughts and we aim to capture this through this twoweek engagement process. It’s a tight timeframe, but we want to have a position formed before the end of April, ahead of discussions with the state and federal governments.”

Cr Smith said council was an active participant in the consultation process for the offshore zone, making a submission to the federal government’s consultation and had previously made a submission to a state government policy discussion paper in 2022.

Cr Smith said community members could provide their feedback via Engage Moyne or at a customer service centre until 10am on Tuesday, April 16.

FORMER Warrnambool singersongwriter Maddie Jackway will today (Friday) release her new EP, ‘Kindred.’

Now based in Geelong, Jackway is set to also unveil her new lead single, ‘You make Me Look Over My Shoulder,’ to accompany her EP announcement.

The mid-tempo, Pop/R&B/Soul track features haunting electronic elements and vocal harmonies while lyrically detailing being ghosted by someone and the anxiety of when their paths will cross again.

The song showcases an evolved sound from the singer-songwriter and leaves much to anticipate for the new EP. Jackway described her new work as a shift away from her first release.

“I’ve always said that I won’t be boxed into one genre and this EP really shows that,” Jackway said.

“You can hear all of my different influences as a writer and musician.”

Co-produced with Melbourne keyboardist and producer Jake Amy, the pair tracked the five-song extended play

out of Kindred Studios while Jackway was Victoria University’s ‘music artist in residence.’

District digs deep

SOUTH west residents have dug deep for this year’s Good Friday Appeal, with over $100,000 raised in Warrnambool.

As of 11.30pm last Friday, Warrnambool’s tally stood at an incredible $100,690.

The Warrnambool Fire Brigade once again organised a group of more than 100 volunteers (including 12 scouts) who headed out on foot and on fire trucks on Friday morning, shaking tins across the city’s streets and public areas.

“Our walking collection raised $29,806.50 which was terrific,” brigade secretary Aaron Huttig said.

“Although this was down slightly on last year’s $31,500 we understand that times are tough and more people are going cashless and donating online.

“We are extremely thankful to the people

who deliberately went and withdrew cash just to put into the collection tins, as well as to all others who generously donated or gave their time to collect.”

The 91st annual Good Friday Appeal raised a record-breaking $22,328,154 – smashing last year’s tally of $17.1m; with the regional tally standing at just over $5.2 million.

Figures released at 11.30pm last Friday showed Garvoc had raised $36,109, Port Fairy $24,828 and Koroit $9,407.

For the first time in its history, this year’s appeal will also support regional paediatric health services including those at Bendigo and the Grampians.

The funds will be used to support training, scholarships and state of the art equipment to improve the experience and outcomes of children receiving care in regional settings – helping to keep children closer to home and increase capability in the regions.

Good Friday Appeal chair Penny Fowler

said the funds raised for the Royal Children’s Hospital showcased the best of communities across Victoria.

“Giving for the kids is what the Good Friday Appeal is all about, and the appeal continues to shine a light on the generosity and support of the Victorian community,” Ms Fowler said.

“This year’s appeal is no exception, with people across the state continuing to show what big hearts they have, especially in light of cost of living challenges.

“We are incredibly grateful to all the volunteers and communities in Victoria who gave in any way they could, for The Royal Children’s Hospital.”

Good Friday Appeal executive director Rebecca Cowan said funds this year would go directly towards new and ongoing programs including extending Child Life Therapy into the Emergency Department, increasing community health literacy,

purchasing an ultrasound machine and a new RETCAM tool.

The funds raised will also be invested into studies and programs that support the diagnosis or treatment of epilepsy, sepsis, Diabetes1 and Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia.

“Each year, we’re absolutely amazed by the support of hundreds of thousands of Victorians uniting to give generously, ensuring our children will continue to receive the highest quality care,” Ms Cowan said.

FRUIT Rescue volunteers have reached a huge milestone this week, having collected a tonne of fruit that has been harvested in less than six months.

The volunteers have been kept busy collecting surplus fruit (that would otherwise go to waste) from public spaces and gardens to be redirected to those in need.

“The crew recently collected apples from trees at Railway Place in Koroit, and from another home, which then enabled us to reach one tonne,” Courtney Mathew, director of Fruit Rescue said.

“Reaching this milestone so quickly was proof of the need and benefits of the project, with growing demand for local emergency food relief.

“We’re so thankful to the people who have contributed to the success of this program; it’s been an amazing season with many friendships formed while doing something great for the community.”

Ms Mathew said while it was hard to imagine what one tonne of fruit even looked like, using the average Australian fruit price of $7.50 a kilo meant the group had redistributed more than $7,500 of produce within the community.

“This doesn’t even take into account the hundreds of kilos of damaged fruit we’ve shared with local wildlife parks and local farms,” Ms Mathew said.

The program, which began as a Leadership Great South Coast project, launched in November last year.

It now has a strong volunteer base, with over 80 people registered to help pick the fruit.

Dianne Membery signed up as a volunteer last December and has now taken on a role to help coordinate the harvest.

“I love that good, fresh food is not going to waste and that we can help Food Share provide fresh food to our community,” Ms Membery said.

“Picks are usually less than an hour so it’s not onerous and you can pick and chose times and dates that suit you.

“Being a harvest leader is a great way you can help our community.”

Western District Food Share executive officer Amanda Hennessey said her organisation was experiencing an increase in demand for emergency food relief services, with an additional five tonne of food distributed through its school and agency partners compared to the same time last year.

“With the cost of living crisis and financial pressure on households, we’re finding that community donations are down,” Ms Hennessey said.

“Fruit Rescue has been fantastic with large donations of apricots, apples, pears, plums which go straight into our emergency food hampers and out to our community meal partners and schools for their fresh fruit programs.”

As the fruit season begins to wind down, there are no plans to curb the momentum the Fruit Rescue team has started. The team is now investigating a community olive collection, in a trial to press into olive oil.

It is hoped people would be able to drop their olive harvest off to be weighed and then receive back the percentage of their contribution as oil.

This is planned for late May or early June. Next harvest season, the group will deliver free preserving workshops to community members in the hope of creating a crew of people who can turn the fruit into a range of food products.

Anyone interested in helping Fruit Rescue can phone 0481 505 415.

HISTORY buffs will be captivated with the tales of the south-west’s illicit whiskey-making past during a whiskey trail ‘tag along’ tour next month.

The ‘northern leg’ of the trail will be held on Sunday, May 19 and will cover areas such as Warrnambool, Koroit and Woodford.

The tour will start at the Mortlake Cemetery at 10am before heading to the intersection of Connewarren Lane and Thorburns Lane where another plaque is situated.

From there participants will travel to Woodford to look at a plaque in Merri Street. After a short talk the group will head to the site of the former Koroit Racecourse where another plaque will be discovered.

The Warrnambool Cemetery is next on the tour – and a visit to the gravesite of ‘Whiskey Tom’ Delaney.

The tour will conclude at the Old Warrnambool Gaol (now the TAFE site) in Gillies Street before members will enjoy lunch at the Warrnambool RSL.

For more information about the tour contact Alan Hart on 0422 955 963.

World champs return to Koroit

NEWLY crowned world championship dancers will be on stage at the Koroit Irish Festival later this month.

The Christine Ayres School of Irish Dancing has claimed first place in the Senior Mixed 8 Hand and Senior Ladies 8 Hand categories at the Irish Dance World Championships in Glasgow.

It will be the second time the dancers will venture to Koroit on the back of world championship titles, having done the same in 2018.

Koroit Irish Festival president Adele MacDonald said the world championships were a much-deserved reward.

“We know how hard Christine and her dancers work, it is wonderful to see them being recognised with such a huge honour,” Ms MacDonald said.

“They are a huge part of our Koroit Irish Festival family, they love coming to Koroit each year and we love having them.

“There is always such a buzz to know they will be at the festival but winning two world championships this year makes it even more exciting.”

Ms MacDonald said the relationship between the Melbourne-based dance group and the festival is an example of the event’s standing in the Australian Irish community.

She said the quality of acts at the festival had helped attractive ticket holders from all over Australia.

Joining the Christine Ayres School of Irish Dancing on the festival bill will be other long-time favourites including Maria Forde, Old Melbourne Road and The Ferriters.

New acts to the festival this year will include Poguesinspired Irish rock bands Kellys Wayke, Double Shot Maggie and Madigan’s Wake.

Ms MacDonald said ticket sales were tracking ahead of last year.

“We do encourage people to get to our website and get their tickets as soon as possible,” she said.

“Earlybirds can save themselves $5 per ticket until April 12. Either way, the tickets are great value for money.”

The Koroit Irish Festival will be held from April 26-28.

Beach Patrol hits the road

BEACH Patrol volunteers will hit the road this month, extending their efforts to the Fitzroy River Estuary.

The group regularly expands its clean-up efforts to areas that are often known as plastic pollution hot spots.

On Sunday, April 14 the group (in conjunction with Glenelg Hopkins CMA) will travel by bus to spend a few hours cleaning up along the river and beach.

The clean-up will be followed by a barbecue lunch, provided by the CMA, before members sort and count their find and board the bus for home.

According to members, last year’s trip to the Fitzroy River Estuary resulted in the removal of more than 119kg of rubbish (most of which was small plastic items) which amounted to 4158 pieces of rubbish.

One of the most interesting ‘finds’ of the day last year was a message in a bottle that had been discarded off the Portland pier 10 years prior –and members were able to make contact with its sender.

The bus will leave the Flagstaff Hill car park at 9am on April 14, with pick-ups also scheduled for Koroit Village Green at 9.15am and the Port Fairy Information Centre at 9.30am.

As seats are limited, bookings are essential.

Volunteers are also welcome to make their own way there, however, pre-registrations would be welcome for catering purposes.

For information simply head to the group’s facebook page, Beach Patrol 3280, or email beachpatrol3280@gmail.com.

It is free to join the group.

Teen eyes farm ownership

FRAMLINGHAM teenager Kiarna Murfett might only be 18, but she already has eyes set on running her own farm.

Kiarna is currently working on a dairy farm at Panmure as she completes her agricultural studies with support from a DemoDAIRY Foundation school scholarship. It’s all part of a long-term plan to take over her family farm at nearby Framlingham.

Kiarna secured a job with Danielle and Tom Wright at their Panmure dairy farm after completing her certificate 11 in Agriculture, with Danielle as her teacher.

“I finished year 12 and was looking for work and I was offered a job on the Wright’s farm, so it was perfect,” she said.

Already well versed in dairy farming from her family background, Kiarna is now enjoying the variety of work the industry offers, from milking cows and feeding calves to drilling and fixing fences.

She is now studying a certificate III and will start a certificate IV in July.

“I’ll stay here for a few years and hope to go back to work on the farm with Dad and Mum and take over the family farm when they’re ready to retire,” she said.

While that’s a few years down the track, Kiarna is enjoying her current experience.

“I like how I can do something different every day,” she said.

“I’m always outside and I have a passion for working with animals.”

The DemoDAIRY Foundation scholarship has been a big help to Kiarna as she transitions from school to work and further study.

“Because I’m straight out of school, the scholarship has allowed me to afford the further study and helped with clothing and to buy a computer for my schooling,” she said.

“It’s helping me to reach my goals.”

Wallball hits the spot

WARRNAMBOOL played host to a range of events over the Easter weekend, including the 2024 Australian 3-Wall Nationals.

The nationals, held at Emmanuel College, attracted some of the country’s best players who were keen to show their skills on the three-wall court within Emmanuel’s ‘Rice Campus.’

For those unfamiliar with the sport, wallball (also known as handball), originated in Ireland and has now spread all over the world.

Wallball is a competitive game in which either hand or fist may be used to hit the ball.

The objective is to win each rally by serving or returning the ball so your opponent is unable to keep the ball in play. The first to 11 points wins.

It is a game played by either two or four players (singles/doubles).

The ball can only bounce once before you hit it and you must hit the front wall and stay within the lines of the court.

According to Australian Handball

Council executive director Bob Winter, last weekend’s event showcased how fast and exciting the game is.

“It’s a great sport to get in to and it’s also good to watch,” he said.

“We had 22 entries on the weekend but unfortunately that was reduced to 19 due to injuries.”

Results form the event were as follows:

Open – singles: Ruairi Kelly, doubles: Dylan King and David Sticca.

A Singles (small ball) - James Di Sebastiano; A Doubles (small ball) –Reno Zaffino and James Di Sebastiano.

A Doubles (big ball) – Ryan Muldrew and James Di Sebastiano.

Masters (40s) singles – Damien Winter; doubles – Damien Winter and Simon Fitzgerald.

60s singles – Greg Hay.

O’Connor Cup – Victoria defeated South Australia 4-0.

Australian team: Dylan King (captain), Ruairi Kelly, David Sticca and James Di Sebastiano.

Hall of Fame inductee: Joe Santilli.

Apply now for funding

LOCAL festival and event organisers are encouraged to apply for Moyne Shire Council grants of up to $10,000.

Applications for the grants (part of the council’s Festival and Event Fund) opened last Monday, April 1.

Funding is available for eligible participants who can demonstrate either a significant social, cultural, economic or environmental contribution to the community.

Mayor Cr Ian Smith said he was looking forward to seeing applications from a range of festivals and events on this year’s social calendar.

“This funding will help us continue to support socially inclusive and culturally rich events that provide economic benefits and contribute to the growth of our region,” Cr Smith said.

“Festivals and events have a long-term flow-on effect beyond ticket sales. They increase visitation and support local businesses, which is why council is so pleased to support events across the region.”

The Port Fairy Marathon and Community Running Festival received funding under the grant scheme for its 2024 event.

Event coordinator Bree Ryan said council funding had paid for the big essential things for the event, such as traffic management, to ensure the event was able to run.

The Koroit Truck Show is another event that secured a grant from the Festival and Event fund.

Organising committee secretary Julie Houlihan said council funding enabled organisers to not just have the trucks on display but also provide a motorbike display for the children as well as a woodchop competition.

Grant applicants must contact council’s events team before applying on 1300 656 564 or to moyne@moyne.vic.gov.au to discuss how this funding opportunity could help support their event.

More information and guidelines can be found at www.moyne.vic.gov.au/Our Community/Community-Grants/Festival-and-Event-Fund.

Applications for the Festival and Event Fund are open until May 6, 2024.

HAMILTON SHEEP MARKET

DETAILED SALEYARD REPORT by MLA’s

Total Yarding: 19500 (+15500)

Sheep Yarding: NQ (-4000) Lamb Yarding: 19500 (NQ)

Hamilton agents yarded 19,500 lambs this week representing an increase of 4,500 head.

The quality was very good overall with an excellent selection of trade weight lambs on offer with a limited tail in the yarding.

Not all processors were present and those on the rail were not fully active.

Restocker and feeder interest was again strong along with local and interstate competition from South Australia with feed lotters paying up to $151/head.

The market was very resilient and remained fully firm over most categories with the exception being the 1 & 2 score lambs over 20kg that were softer by $5/head.

Most of the lambs to the trade were making between 600 and 680c/kg cwt with the odd penning selling to 730c/kg cwt.

The best of the heavy lambs topped at $225/head. Light 12 to 16kg lambs sold from $119 to $125/head with the 18 to 22kg lamb to the trade from $115 to $160/head.

The 22 to 26kg lamb sold from $149 to $207/head. Hoggets topped at $112/head.

THE bright lights of Reid Oval will be shining tonight (Friday) for the opening round of the 2024 Hampden Football Netball League season.

The Warrnambool Blues and Koroit Saints will battle it out under lights in the senior football and netball competitions, while the remaining grades will be played tomorrow (Saturday).

This will be the second time the newly developed facility will host a Friday night fixture – with the last being held in 2022.

Hampden League president Shane Threlfall said tonight’s games will be a terrific way to officially open the 2024 season.

“It will be the first game of the opening round and it’s a great chance for people to come and have a look at some of the big star recruits coming into our league, particularly Ben Cunnington,” Threlfall said.

“It’s a great initiative from both Warrnambool and Koroit to move that game from the traditional Saturday to the Friday night.”

In other Hampden League round one action, South Warrnambool will host North Warrnambool, Camperdown will host Terang Mortlake, Port Fairy will travel to take on Portland and Cobden will be home to Hamilton.

Frost wins season finale

TATE Frost emerged victorious in the final race of the 2024 Sprintcar season at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway last weekend.

The Super Rods also delivered a spectacular night of entertainment, with Jamie May earning his second victory in three nights.

Michael Coad continued his consistently good form to take second while Jason Kavanagh claimed third.

The always-reliable Late Models again showed plenty of grunt on the track, with Tasmanian driver Brad Smith taking the chequered flag ahead of Callum Harper.

Despite an early setback to seventh place, Chevy Edwards fought back to earn a spot on the podium, finishing in third.

Last Sunday night also marked the conclusion of the season’s track championship.

TONIGHT’S Hampden League season opener between Warrnambool and Koroit will mark significant milestones for two of the game’s field umpires.

Leigh McNaughton and Gavin Sell will both celebrate their 500th games; McNaughton coming from combined totals as field, boundary, goal and interchange umpire while for Sell it will mark number 500 as a field umpire (having also officiated many more games in various other roles). The pair will be joined on-field by fellow official Steve Walker. And making the milestone extra special for McNaughton, son Jackson will run the boundary.

“Tonight will certainly be extra special having Jackson also officiating,” McNaughton said.

“He’s now 15 and into his second year of umpiring but this will be his first time officiating a Hampden League senior game which is exciting – and his first under lights.”

McNaughton has been a member of the Warrnambool Football Umpires since 1998, having joined as a 14-year-old.

“I spent a year playing footy for East Warrnambool in 1997 but quickly found I wasn’t that great at it,” he said.

“The next season I decided to follow in my brother Wayne’s footsteps. I think he (Wayne) reached 99 games before giving it away – and now my son is following in mine which is special.”

McNaughton said while he never became an umpire to reach major milestones, he was quietly proud of his achievement.

His 500 games include 238 as a field umpire, 256 running the boundary, three games as a goal umpire and three as an interchange.

Of the many highlights to date, he fondly recalls grand final appearances for Hampden seniors on “about five occasions” and running on to the MCG as a field umpire during an under 18s Vic Country v Vic Metro as a curtain-raiser to ‘Dreamtime at the G’ between Essendon and Richmond.

McNaughton was also selected, through the umpire academy program, as a boundary umpire at GMHBA Stadium.

To celebrate tonight’s milestone, McNaughton bravely had ‘500’ shaved into the side of his head.

“If this (my haircut) can bring a smile and a few laughs to people then it’s worth it,” he said.

“I’m really looking forward to tonight’s game and the season to come.”
