AFTER unfavourable weather conditions saw the postponement of last week’s ‘Wheelie Convoy’ in Warrnambool, organisers have now set Wednesday, November 19 as the new date for this year’s event.

People using wheelchairs, wheelie walkers, mobility scooters or trikes are invited to join the convoy, which will start at Lake Pertobe from 11am.

There are two courses to choose from - a 400m short course at Lake Pertobe, and a longer course that heads down Pertobe Road, along Worm Bay Road and back to Lake Pertobe via the Foreshore Promenade.

Warrnambool City Council coordinator community programs Clare Vaughan said the convoy was designed to promote

social connection, physical activity and the use of Warrnambool’s accessible foreshore infrastructure.

“Each year, Warrnambool gets more and more accessible, so this is a great opportunity to catch up with some fellow wheeled transport users and get active,” she said.

“The longer course will go past the new beach access ramp at McGennans, and there’s also the new amenities block nearby, as well as new footpaths that better link the promenade with Lake Pertobe.”

More than 80 people took part in the inaugural convoy last year.

“Last year’s event was so positive and it was really great to see the different ways people were able to stay active,” she said.

“And I think that really spoke to the heart

of what this is about.

COMMUNITIES across the south-west are grappling with “a staggering rise in crime” according to local MP, Roma Britnell.

“The latest crime statistics released by the Crime Statistics Agency paint a damning picture of the state government’s failure to protect regional Victorians,” Ms Britnell said.

“We are seeing a rise in violent crime, theft and unsolved offences.

“In Moyne, residential aggravated burglary has jumped 167 per cent, serious assaults are up 42 per cent and yet again 30 per cent of crimes remain unsolved, leaving victims without justice and communities without peace of mind.”

Warrnambool itself has not been spared.

According to Ms Britnell, the latest figures showed total offences rose by 452, with 896 unsolved cases.

Retail theft surged by 60 per cent and serious

assaults increased by 43 per cent.

“Families are frightened in their own homes, with 891 criminal incidents occurring in residential settings,” she said.

“These figures confirm what I’ve been hearing from residents, shopkeepers, and frontline police officers for months - crime is out of control, and the state government is doing nothing to stop it.

“Police are burnt out, under-resourced, and unsupported. Offenders know they’ll be released almost immediately. There is no deterrent, no justice, and no leadership.”

Ms Britnell also claimed that despite this crisis, the state government failed to allocate any additional funding to the Police Academy in the 2025–26 State Budget.

“With over 1,100 police vacancies and more than 800 officers on WorkCover, the system is broken and Labor is pretending there’s no

“Whether you use a wheelchair, a walker, an electric scooter… it’s all about finding something that works for you and allows you to enjoy the physical, mental and social benefits of a walk or a roll in the fresh air in our beautiful city.”

The convoy starts and finishes at the Lake Pertobe barbecue shelter opposite the Beach Kiosk, with a free barbecue, including gluten free and vegan options.

There will also be live music, special guests and spot prizes for the best decorated hat and scooter, wheelchair or walker.

The event is free to join, but RSVPs are required for safety and catering purposes.

Please contact the Archie Graham Community Centre on 5559 4920 or email agccustserv@warrnambool.vic.gov.au.

problem. Victims deserve justice, but instead Labor cut $50 million from police, shut stations and left 2,000 jobs unfilled.

“Police tell me they’re doing the best they can and I believe them, because they’re not just officers, they’re our neighbours.”

Despite having their operating budgets slashed, some local stations are resorting to doing their own gardening just to maintain basic standards.

“It’s a stark reminder of how stretched our frontline services have become under this government,” Ms Britnell said.

“We’ve lived in our communities confident of our safety for as long as I can remember; many of us not even locking our doors.

“We know we can return to safety, and turn this situation around. We just need a supportive government to show leadership to strengthen laws.”

Multicultural festival next month

THE Warrnambool Multicultural Festival will next month light up the Civic Green with a feast of colour, music and foods.

The festival – a vibrant celebration of the many cultures that enrich the local community – will this year be held on Saturday, November 8.

This year’s program will feature International food stalls showcasing diverse flavours from around the globe.

There will also be live performances throughout the day, celebrating music, dance and storytelling traditions.

A dedicated workshop space will give children and families the opportunity to take part in hands-on cultural activities while community stalls will highlight the work and contributions of local services and cultural groups.

Festival chair Carlos Lopez said the event was about more than just food and entertainment.

“This festival is about recognising and celebrating the role multicultural communities play in building a strong, welcoming, and connected Warrnambool,” Carlos said.

“It is a chance for us to come together, to learn from each other, and to celebrate the incredible advantages of embracing diversity.

“Our community is stronger, more vibrant, and more innovative because of the contributions of people from many different backgrounds.”

This free festival is made possible thanks to the dedication of volunteers and the support of the Warrnambool Multicultural Association.

Presented by the Warrnambool Multicultural Association, the festival will run from 10am until 3pm.

Last year’s multicultural festival attracted a large crowd to Warrnambool’s Civic Green and organisers are confident this year’s event will be just as successful.

Nominations open for citizen awards

DO you know an individual or group that deserves to be recognised for their hard work and achievements?

Nominations are now open for the 2026 Warrnambool Citizen of the Year Awards.

As well as the Citizen of the Year, other categories include Young Citizen of the Year (aged 16–30), Community Event of the Year and the Local Achiever Award.

This year’s Citizen of the Year Nathan McKane knows how powerful that recognition can be.

Nathan was commended for his work in promoting mental health awareness and the R U OK? Day message.

Named an R U OK? Day Ambassador for the second year running, he’s currently in the midst of the Ks for R U OK? Day challenge, where he aims to walk, ride and paddle a combined 250 kilometres during October.

You can find out more and support Nathan at https://ksforruok.ruok.org.au.

He said that almost a year on, he was proud of the award and how it had helped to spread important mental health messages.

“There was the honour of winning the award, but also the fact that I was able to put mental health and suicide prevention into the wider community space and hopefully make people feel safe and more comfortable to talk about the emotional side of it,” he said.

“I remember in March I went for a surf with my daughter at Worm Bay, and these two ladies came in from the surf and said they were at the award ceremony and thanked me.

“I thought, wow, these people don’t know me but they’ve remembered me from two months prior and what’s happened has resonated with them.

“There were lots of little occurrences like that that still happen to this day.

“If people see you and they want to acknowledge it or take it further and look up R U OK?, that’s fantastic.”

He encouraged everyone to take a moment to think about the people they know who make a difference, and to nominate them for an award.

“If you believe in somebody to the extent that they’ve done something great for the community, just go for it. You’ve got nothing to lose,” he said.

“Within our community we’re all involved in different social circles and community groups, so it can help you expose your peers who have done great things that other people may not know about, and it can go a long way to boosting their confidence and helping them along with the good work they’re doing.”

Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said the awards were the perfect way to recognise the people and events who make Warrnambool a better place to live.

“These awards are a really great way to shine a spotlight on an unsung local hero,” he said.

“Someone who puts others before themselves and quietly helps create the clubs, events or community spaces that we all enjoy.

“These are the people who step up and volunteer, organise, mentor or simply just lend a hand when and where it’s needed in the community.

“If you stop and think, we all know someone like this, and nominating them for an award is a really meaningful way to show your appreciation.”

Cr Blain said the awards presentation would again take place in late January.

“As in recent years, the awards will be

HALLO

PLAZA

presented as part of a special event that also includes a citizenship ceremony,” he said.

“This format has been incredibly well attended. By avoiding the long weekend, award recipients and new citizens can be surrounded by a strong contingent of family and friends.

“It’s one of the most uplifting days on the council calendar, and a fantastic way to start the new year.”

To make a nomination simply visit www. yoursaywarrnambool.com.au by November 13.

Angling for a worthy cause

A FUNDRAISING event hosted by the Koroit and District Angling Club has resulted in a $1,000 donation to the local Prostate Cancer Network.

The club held its first event of the 2025/26 fishing season on Sunday, October 5.

The day was not only a successful membership renewal drive, it also placed a focus on raising awareness of prostate cancer and the importance of good health.

The fishing competition was held along the banks of the Moyne River at Port Fairy and a raffle was held throughout the day –with anglers also encouraged to dress in

blue (following the blue theme of prostate cancer).

The day began at the boat ramp near the mariner, with the club gazebo adorned with blue balloons and signage to promote the event to passers-by.

More than 30 anglers entered the competition and later enjoyed a barbecue and blue-iced donuts.

Guest speaker Daniel Deppeler from OZFish spoke about the work his organisation was undertaking to help with fish habitat restoration and programs to educate anglers on the things that could lead to more fish stocks in the future.

Portfolios lost in cabinet reshuffle

A RESHUFFLE of the Shadow Cabinet has seen a south west MP lose her portfolios.

The Victorian Coalition recently announced a new-look frontbench following polling which showed support for the Coalition had continued to fall under the leadership of Brad Battin.

South West Coast MP Roma Britnell was omitted from the new-look shadow cabinet, losing both the Shadow Minister for Ports and Freight and Shadow Minister for Child Protection portfolios.

‘‘It is not what I would have chosen, and I am very disappointed, but Brad as the leader of the party has the right to choose who he wants in the shadow cabinet,’” Ms Britnell said.

“My years as Shadow Minister across key portfolios including ports and freight, child protection, consumer affairs, and fishing and boating, have provided me with invaluable experience and insights that continue to strengthen my representation of South West Coast in Spring Street.

“Brad wants to bring into shadow cabinet some of the newer members to get the experience they need to be ready to govern next year.

“As a team, we recognise the challenges ahead – and meeting them will require experience, readiness, and resilience.

“This is about building capability across the board, ensuring that when the time comes, every member is ready to lead with confidence and competence.”

Polwarth MP Richard Riordan retained the Shadow Minister for Planning and Housing while also adding Shadow Minister for Tourism, Sport, Events and

Hospitality.

Members for Western Victoria Bev McArthur and Joe McCracken retained their spots, with Mrs McArthur named Shadow Minister for Local Government and Shadow Minister for Government Waste, and Mr McCracken retaining his role as Shadow Cabinet Secretary.

Ms Britnell said she believed the reshuffle of the frontbench highlighted the Coalition would be ready to govern if elected in 2026, saying everyone has a role to play and her own experience would help to contribute to the team’s success.

“We are a unified team, a small but very hard-working team,” she said.

In a statement from leader of the Opposition, Brad Battin, and Coalition deputy leader Danny O’Brien, the duo vowed the new-look shadow cabinet boasted both the talent and experience to hold the state government to account and advocate for a plan centred around less waste, lower taxes and less crime.

“The Liberals and Nationals are a team that brings together people from different walks of life to represent all Victorians,” they said.

“Our diversity is our greatest strength.

“We all share the same ambition, and that’s to improve the lives of every Victorian. In this team, everyone will contribute and we are all committed to working every day to earn the trust and respect of all Victorians.

“Together, we will work to make Victoria safer, to ease the cost of living, to deliver the services that families rely on and to restore economic discipline.

“At the next election, Victorians will have a choice between four more years of Jacinta Allan’s Labor Government or a fresh start with the team we lead.”

Red and yellow day to celebrate volunteers

A NEW national day to recognise the contribution of volunteer lifesavers will be held in March next year.

‘Red and Yellow Day’ will be a nationwide celebration of the lifesaving movement, and an opportunity to show our appreciation to our volunteers for giving their time, effort and energy to protect our community.

The public will be encouraged to show their support by wearing the iconic red and yellow colours of our volunteer lifesavers.

Residents will also be encouraged to make a donation to their local club, or join as a member and

pledge to keep themselves and their loved ones safe in the water.

The day will also promote the Red and Yellow Day Appeal, which is an opportunity for lifesaving clubs to raise much-needed funds to support their operations, build community engagement and take part in nationwide water safety campaigns.

Life Saving Victoria general manager (member engagement and sport) Simon Rickard thanked and commended our volunteer lifesavers, who are gearing up for the start of the summer patrol season on November 15.

“Our volunteer lifesavers show incredible dedication, skill and selflessness, giving their time freely to serve the public,” Mr Rickard said.

“Red and Yellow Day is a fantastic opportunity to recognise and celebrate our volunteer lifesavers for their efforts to keep our community safe in the water as well as raise much needed funds to support essential equipment, training, and facilities for clubs.”

The inaugural Red and Yellow Day will run on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.

The Red and Yellow Day Appeal will run from March 3 to May 6.

Changes to the shadow cabinet have seen Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell dropped from the frontbench.

Action aplenty on picnic day

THE grounds of St Patrick’s Primary School Koroit will once again come alive when the school hosts its annual ‘Picnic in the Paddock’ next weekend.

The picnic will run from 10am until 3pm next Sunday, October 26 with the day set to draw hundreds of visitors to town.

A second stage will also run this year, and will feature sheep shearing demonstrations, whip cracking and students performing drum demonstrations.

The children’s area looks set to expand with the addition of a new carnival ride, The Cha Cha. This is the first time a ride of its size has appeared at the picnic and organisers are confident this will attract a lot of interest from picnic-goers.

Once again local community groups have shown their support of the day, with members of the local SES unit performing two car-cutting demonstrations.

There will also be a large range of emergency service vehicles on display, and a tractor to climb in and explore.

Visitors to this year’s Picnic in the Paddock will also have the chance to purchase some special ‘picnic merchandise’ including hats, bags and pens.

These will also be available from the school office – along with unlimited rides wristbands (just $25 pre-purchase or $30 on the day).

A day out for aviation enthusiasts

AVIATION enthusiasts of all ages are encouraged to head to the Warrnambool Airport in Koroit on Saturday, November 8 for what looks set to be a great family day out.

The Warrnambool Aero Club will once again hold its end of year celebration and is extending an invitation to the general public to come along to the Koroit airstrip for the day.

“The day is always a fun one, with festivities starting at around 10.30am,” club secretary Janek Krause said.

“Families and aviation enthusiasts will be kept busy with a variety of aircraft on display, a barbecue lunch and coffee van, as well as face painting and a jumping castle for the kids.

“There will also be plenty of opportunities to meet local pilots and learn more about aviation in the region.”

Organisers are also looking to include a raffle on the day – with a trial introductory flight prize up for grabs.

Always a crowd favourite, the 1943 Boeing Stearman will once again be on display at the airport for visitors to see on Saturday, November 8.

LOCALS and visitors to the Koroit township will notice some works currently being undertaken along Commercial Road.

While it is business as usual at the popular Mickey Bourke’s Hotel, last week saw the commencement of work on the footpath and front verandah of the iconic building.

And according to Moyne Shire Council, paving works in Commercial Road will commence once this section is complete.

It is anticipated an update to the Koroit Streetscape plan will be released by the shire in the coming days.

Season launch a hit for race fans

MOTORSPORT enthusiasts of all ages enjoyed the chance to take a look inside a range of race cars at last weekend’s Premier Speedway season launch on the Civic Green.

Large crowds gathered on the green throughout the day, with young and old keen to take a close look behind the wheel and talk to some of this season’s drivers.

A free sausage sizzle and drinks proved popular among the crowd, as did the chance to enter the draw to win a season’s pass.

With so many giveaways on the day, and several cars representing a variety of classes, the launch was once again hailed a huge success.

Premier Speedway will open its gates to the public for the first time for the 2025/26 season on Saturday, November 1.

Sprintcars and wingless sprints will be on the night’s program.

Gates will open at 4pm with cars on track from 5.15pm.

Honouring those who gained their wings early

A NEW memorial tree at Warrnambool’s Tooram Memorial Park is providing families with a special place to honour, remember and reflect on precious babies lost in early gestation.

The new Early Loss Memorial Tree, which gives families the chance to honour and recognise babies lost before 20 weeks’ gestation, was officially launched by Member for Wannon Dan Tehan during a moving ceremony last Thursday afternoon.

The project (which has been two years in the making) is the brainchild of local Rotarian Janet Blackley who saw the need for families to have a special place of remembrance.

“Babies lost prior to 20 weeks gestation cannot be buried in a cemetery and these families really need and deserve a special place where they can come to, remember and honour their little ones,” Janet said.

“All babies deserve to be recognised. This

tree is not an imposing monument, rather a gentle and quiet place where people can return, reflect and feel connected.

“It’s a sign that no grief is too small to be acknowledged and that no child is ever forgotten.”

The tree, a sculpted metal artwork, is designed to hold up to 300 personalised tokens in the form of leaves or butterflies.

It was created through a partnership between the Rotary Club of Warrnambool, the Warrnambool Cemetery Trust and community members who have lived experience of loss.

One such local is Sarah Wallace, founder of The Wish Collective.

Sarah and husband Steven, who are today the proud parents of three year-old Rosie (and are soon to welcome a “little brother or sister” for her), have experienced six losses in the past and feel this new memorial tree will give families a “very tangible and very

real” place to visit, reflect and honour those lost.

“I feel this entire space, incorporating the tree and the bench, is such a beautiful one.

“It represents a change in the way parents and families can start to process their grief, giving them a physical acknowledgment of their loss and a place to go.

“We know from our experience going through fertility treatments that the journey can be quite isolating, and pregnancy loss can be quite a difficult topic for some people to discuss – this shines a light on the topic and I feel so honoured to have been invited to provide input into this project.”

Having founded The Wish Collective in 2023, Sarah is now a strong advocate for those who have experienced the loss of a child, or who are expected to, and to date has distributed well over 150 pregnancy loss support kits.

These kits, which include vital information

on resources available both at a local and national level, are distributed through hospitals and medical clinics across Warrnambool and Port Fairy.

Officially launching the memorial tree at Tooram Memorial Park last week, Mr Tehan congratulated all those involved for their initiative.

“This is a wonderful space of reflection and remembrance for local parents and families to come to,” he said.

“It is incredibly difficult to lose a child and when this occurs before 20 weeks’ gestation parents are often left with nowhere to turn, no place to stop and remember.

“This tree and this space will provide that for them and many others for years to come. It’s such a beautiful memorial and I congratulate all involve with this.”

Details about how families can request a personalised token will be released in the coming weeks.

Member for Wannon Dan Tehan with Rotarian Janet Blackley and cemetery trust secretary, Karen Johnson. Brad and Kim Humphrys from Ultra Metals, creators of the tree.
A bench has been erected in front of the tree, inviting parents and families to sit and reflect – ‘You have to listen to the wind to hear the angels sing.’
The memorial tree has room for 300 ‘tokens’, with space allowed for the construction of a second tree if needed in the future.

Because

As a result of their recent participation in a Student Leaders Congress (a regional initiative that sees young people identify a project, collaborate in teams and lead it from idea to impact) the students are currently planning to host a community market on Friday, November 17.

The market will be held in the schoolgrounds from 5pm until 7pm and will be open to everyone.

“The Student Leaders Congress taught me what being a leader really means; listening to everyone’s opinions, and how to stay focussed but still

Next month’s market will be a celebration of local talent, creativity and community spirits.

Visitors can expect delicious food, live music, local art and produce stalls, face painting, races and much more.

The event will demonstrate what youth leadership looks like in action, and will see students working together to plan, problem-solve and create something meaningful for their community.

“It took us a week or two to decide to do the market as our project, and we’re all really happy with it,” Belle said.

“My favourite part was the lead up to the market and it’s

exciting now that it’s coming around,” Daisy said.

“It was fun planning the market and learning new things,” Harry said.

According to fellow student, Zaylie, the Student Leaders Congress showed him how to have more confidence and not to be scared of taking control. It is hoped the Cudgee and wider communities will get behind the students and support their market on November 14.

Entry to the market will be by gold coin donation, with every visitor entered in the draw for a lucky gate prize.

Visitors are encouraged to take along extra coins to take part in student-run activities.

Business breakfast to address humanomics

WITH major shifts in how and where people live and work, how can Warrnambool ensure its economy continues to grow into the 21st century?

Economic Futurist Evan Lucas will explore the humanomics of Warrnambool in a keynote presentation at the Mayor’s Business Breakfast on Friday, November 14 at the Warrnambool Golf Club.

Evan is a best-selling author, keynote speaker and host of the podcast ‘Exchanges.’

He is known for translating complexity into clarity and challenging audiences to think beyond the headlines and prepare for our economic futures.

Mr Lucas said that humanomics was about looking at a combination of demographics and behavioural science to better understand how these impact society and the economy.

“By humanomics, it’s all about how we view the world to be in the future, and what we want as a society, as a city, as an overall culture,” he said.

“With the acceleration of digitisation, the acceleration of the movement of people, tourism services and human services are going to be one of the major forward movements.”

With family connections in Warrnambool, Evan is a regular visitor and said the city was well positioned to benefit in this new economy with people at the centre.

“There’s no doubt that Warrnambool’s advantage is that it has semi-proximity to Melbourne and it has the lifestyle that most people want,” he said.

“The net value in Warrnambool for a lifestyle that a lot of people are chasing is very, very attractive.”

His talk will also cover the pitfalls that come from “fast thinking”, which is our instinctive reaction to change, and how businesses can learn to adapt.

“The initial reaction of fast thinking is negative, and disruption,” he said.

“Human beings are geared physiologically to think about now. Realistically our brains haven’t changed from what they were in the Stone Age.

“The difference between us today and us 35,000 years ago is that we have a completely different lifestyle.”

Mr Lucas said embracing change was vital for businesses, even when it felt uncomfortable.

“For businesses, it’s about embracing the change, and that’s hard. This is the part that can be hard to listen to, especially businesses that feel they are already struggling,” he said.

“How can I embrace what is coming whether I like it or not? That is things like AI, like renewable energy, like overseas manufacturing.

“These are the questions I try to get them to ask themselves to help them embrace what overall, looks like a pretty optimistic future for a place like Warrnambool.”

As well as Mr Lucas’ presentation, the event will also include an analysis of the past 12 months of economic data for Warrnambool. Tickets are $35, including breakfast, and can be purchased at www.eventbrite.com. au by searching “Mayor’s Business Breakfast Warrnambool”.

Friendly fire among friends

IF you think you have an eye for clay target shooting, or would just like to ‘give it a go’ among new friends, the rifle range in Allansford is the place to visit.

The range is home to several rifle clubs, as well as an archery club, and included among those is the North Warrnambool 5 Stand Sporting Clays group.

This group of “friendly gents” meets at the range every Friday for a few hours of target shooting – and a lot of chatter.

“It’s really just a social group, abit like a men’s shed with an emphasis on clay target shooting,” member Dave Charles said.

“We have a lot of fun. Our club currently has about 24 members and we shoot each Friday between 10am and 3pm – if the red flag is out then we’re here and the shed is open.

“Our targets include an overhead target as well as simulated field targets which is great

for people wanting to practice shooting for rabbits that type of thing.

“People who don’t yet have their own equipment are welcome to visit up to three times before they are expected to join – and each session is always under the direction of a qualified shooter.”

While people of all ages are welcome (those from 12 years and above with a junior firearm licence are welcome) the club’s current eldest member is a sprightly 95 years old.

Ted Henry, who lives in Warrnambool and regularly drives himself to the Allansford range, says it’s the companionship he now enjoys most about the club.

“I handed in my license years ago; I think I was about 80 when I shot for the last time,” he said.

“My eye sight isn’t that great these days which makes it hard to see the targets. But I still really enjoy my Fridays with the boys out here.”

of St Brigids will be hoping for fine weather this Sunday, October 26 when the group once again hosts a ‘Killarney to Port Fairy’ beach walk fundraiser.

After a very successful event last year, organisers have locked in another walk. Participants will meet at the Killarney beach car park from 9.45am

Members line up to test their clay target shooting skills.
Now at the age of 95, Ted Henry has long since shot on the range but he still enjoys the company.

Athletes return to the track

PORT Fairy Little Athletics returned for week two of the new season.

Windy but sunny conditions greeted athletes and their families, all of which were keen to get back to the track after the previous week’s stadium session.

Many of the club’s under 6’s enjoyed their first ever try at athletics, taking part in an on-track learning session filled with fun activities.

The youngest members also challenged

themselves to a ‘big’ 300 metre run as well as discus and long jump events. The club’s older athletes also competed on the track, taking part in up to four track and field events.

It was great to see so much laughter, smiles and cheering throughout the night – along with many new families and parents helping out.

A reminder to all families that there will be no athletics on October 31 due to the Port Fairy Show while November 14 will be ‘Coles round.’

District League unveils Strategic Plan

THE Warrnambool District Football Netball League (WDFNL) has unveiled its Strategic Plan 2026–2030, outlining a bold vision for the future of football and netball across the Warrnambool district.

Developed following extensive consultation with clubs, players, volunteers, and the wider community, the new plan sets a clear direction for the league over the next five years.

The plan focusses on strong, inclusive and sustainable competitions that connect people, support growth, and create opportunities for everyone to participate and thrive.

WDFNL board member Larissa Barclay said the Strategic Plan represents an exciting new chapter for the league and the communities it serves.

“This is a brand-new plan, built from the ground up through genuine engagement with our clubs and community,” Ms Barclay said.

“It reflects who we are today, and the kind of league we want to be; one that supports its clubs, invests in its juniors, and celebrates the people who make community sport possible.”

The plan’s purpose is to provide strong, inclusive, and sustainable football and netball competitions that foster participation, skill development, and community connection across the Warrnambool district.

Its vision is to grow a welcoming football and netball community where clubs work together to connect people, celebrate achievement, and share a lifelong love of sport - ensuring everyone feels included,

supported, and proud to belong.

For the first time, the league has introduced a new set of values that will underpin its culture and guide decision-making.

The values outlined in the plan include the following:

• Inclusion – we embrace diversity and welcome everyone, ensuring our League is where everyone can belong, participate, and thrive.

• Respect – we treat every person, role, and contribution with dignity, building a culture of care, connection, and pride.

• Integrity – we act with honesty, fairness, and transparency, upholding the spirit of the game and the trust of our community.

• Leadership – we take initiative, lead by example, and motivate others through purposeful action and shared commitment.

• Excellence – we aim high, give our all, and celebrate achievement, knowing success is built together.

“These are brand-new values for our league and they reflect the spirit, inclusiveness, and community pride that define us,” Ms Barclay said.

“They will guide how we support our clubs, develop our juniors, and lead with purpose and integrity.”

The 2026–2030 Strategic Plan is structured around five key pillars:

1. Inclusive Community and Club Engagement – building welcoming, inclusive clubs that celebrate diversity, strengthen volunteer engagement, and foster connection.

2. Facilities and Infrastructure – advocating for safe, modern, and accessible facilities that meet the needs of growing clubs.

3. Participation Growth and Player Development – expanding opportunities for players, coaches, and umpires of all ages

and abilities, with a strong focus on junior development and pathways.

4. Governance, Leadership and Sustainability – supporting effective governance, leadership, and long-term sustainability across the League and its clubs.

5. Collaboration and Strategic Partnerships – strengthening partnerships with AFL Victoria, Netball Victoria, councils, schools, and community organisations to drive growth and innovation.

According to Ms Barclay, the league will track progress and measure success on an ongoing basis to ensure accountability and continuous improvement.

Key indicators include:

• Growth in junior participation across football and netball.

• Stronger club governance, leadership, and financial sustainability.

• Increased coaching and umpiring recruitment and retention.

• Enhanced volunteer engagement and recognition.

• Tangible progress on facility and infrastructure upgrades.

“Our success will be measured not just by premierships, but by the strength of our clubs, the growth of our juniors, and the connections we build through sport,” Ms Barclay said.

“This plan gives us a clear roadmap for the next five years and one that’s focused on inclusion, development, and community pride.”

The formal launch of the WDFNL Strategic Plan 2026–2030 will take place in early 2026, with a series of club and community events to celebrate the new direction and share the league’s vision for the future.

State award for netball program

WARRNAMBOOL City Netball Association has been named Victoria’s ‘Inclusive Netball Community of the Year’.

The association, renowned for its all-inclusive netball program and its highly successful team, the Stingers, was announced the category winner at the Netball Victoria Community Awards presentation ceremony last Sunday.

Each year these awards shine a light on the individuals in the netball community who go above and beyond to support the game.

In accepting the award last weekend, alongside committee member Mel Addinsall, City Netball administrator Marg Morgan said she was absolutely thrilled the association was considered a worthy winner of the award.

“I was blown away to think someone in the community felt us worthy of such an award but to win it was just incredible.

“We have a wonderful netball community, not only for our mainstream teams but also for our All Abilities players who are just amazing.

“Our All Abilities team continues to go from strength to strength. We’re all about being inclusive and netball at all levels provides platforms for that inclusion which is wonderful.”

The Stingers celebrate their season win.
Sharelle McMahon (Netball Victoria general manager, high performance and pathways), Di Honey (Melbourne Vixens 2026 coach), Warrnambool City Netball administrator Marg Morgan and Melbourne Vixens player, Emily Mannix.
