Poi twirling instructor Diane Hughson (centre) was surrounded by happy faces when she led a class for seniors at the Archie Graham Centre on Monday. The activity was just one of many enjoyed across the city as part of week one of this year’s Seniors Festival. For more photos turn to page 6.

A special place of remembrance

FAMILIES who have lost babies before 20 weeks’ gestation will soon have a special place of peace, reflection and remembrance.

A new memorial at Warrnambool Cemetery Trust’s Tooram Memorial Park (on Hopkins Point Road) will soon be complete.

The ‘Early Loss Memorial Tree,’ a two-dimensional sculpted metal artwork, has been designed to hold up to 300 personalised tokens in the form of leaves of butterflies.

Until now, Warrnambool has had no memorial for babies lost before 20 week’s gestation.

The concept for an early loss memorial was first championed by Rotary Club of Warrnambool member Janet Blackley and readily adopted by the club’s Board and members.

The initiative was developed in partnership with the Warrnambool Cemetery Trust and community members with lived experienced of loss.

Each token on the tree will carry a message chosen by parents, families, or loved ones who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, or early infant death.

These tributes may honour recent losses or those carried quietly for many years when fewer opportunities existed for public mourning and acknowledgment.

For those who bear this sorrow, the memorial will offer a gentle and enduring way to honour a life that was, and remains, deeply loved.

It will be a place not only for grief, but also for connection with others who share similar experiences.

In both its form and purpose, the tree symbolises memory, resilience, and love that endures.

This is not intended as an imposing monument, but as a subtle offering where families can return to and speak the names and stories that may otherwise have gone unheard.

The memorial offers an enduring way to honour lives lost too soon and to recognise grief that is often unseen.

“The tree is a gentle and quiet place where people can return, reflect, and feel connected,” project co-ordinator and Rotarian Janet Blackley said.

“It is a sign that no grief is too small to be acknowledged, and no child is ever forgotten.”

The project has been two years in the making and is now nearing completion.

A community opening ceremony will be held at Tooram Memorial Park on Wednesday, October 16 at 2pm.

Warrnambool will soon have a special place of remembrance for those who have lost babies before 20 weeks’ gestation.

Details about how to request a personalised token will be shared in the coming weeks.

Through this project, the Rotary Club of Warrnambool, the Warrnambool Cemetery Trust, and all those involved hope to offer comfort, connection, and healing to everyone who carries the memory of a child lost too soon.

Generations walk for those with Parkinson’s

NOT even grey clouds overhead and an early light drizzle could dampen the spirits of those who took part in last weekend’s ‘A Walk in the Park.’

Aptly renamed the Andrew Suggett Parkinson’s Walk (in honour of the man who inspired, and continues to inspire many across the region), Sunday morning’s walk along the promenade attracted a large crowd of all ages.

Chief executive officer of Fight Parkinson’s Emma Collin praised the Warrnambool support group (led by coordinator Liz Morse) for its continued support of the event and the support shown for those affected by the disease and their families.

“For the past 13 or 14 years I’ve been involved with the Warrnambool event and this one really holds special significance in the Parkinson’s community,” Ms Collin said.

“It was the first regional walk to be held in Australia, initiated and led by Andrew Suggett, and it continues to hold its place as one of the most powerful.

“Not just because of the number of people who attend but by the sheer support this Warrnambool group shows and continues to show.”

According to Ms Collin there are currently more than 57,000 Victorians living with Parkinson’s and around 220,000 nationally.

“It’s important that people are aware of the help and support that is available which includes online information, online services as well as clinical support five days a week,” she said.

“Walks such as this (in Warrnambool) helps to raise awareness of Parkinson’s, to raise vital funds and helps bring people together.”

Upon return from their walk around the Promenade, the group was treated to a hot sausage in bread thanks to members of the Rotary Club of Warrnambool Daybreak.

Another large group of participants took part in this year’s ‘A Walk in the Park’ in Warrnambool.
Members of the Rotary Club of Warrnambool Daybreak provided a hot sausage in bread for walkers upon their return. Working hard behind the barbecue were club members Ian Harper, Janey Preston, Glenn Rundell and Liz Bligh.
Friends Sophie Barrows, Mia Pejovic and Frankie Brightwell were keen to take part in the walk last Sunday.
Eight year-old Zavier Burrows whizzed around the walking track on his scooter.
Six year-old Hamish Batman took a relaxing ride with his Pa, Ian Scott.

Poi twirling fun for seniors

POI twirling proved loads of fun for almost a dozen local seniors who took advantage of a free session earlier this week.

Monday morning’s poi twirling fun was led by experienced instructor, Diane Hughson, as part of Warrnambool City Council’s Seniors Festival celebrations.

Held at the Archie Graham Centre, the hour-long activity enabled participants to learn new skills, enjoy some casual exercise (both seated and standing) and have a few laughs.

“Poi twirling is proven to boost brain health, balance, coordination and grip strength,” Ms Hughson said.

“And it’s also a lot of fun in the process. Pois are very bright and colourful and I make many of my own.

“I’ve been doing this for many years and really enjoy seeing the smiles on the faces of participants.”

There was no shortage of smiles at the Archie Graham Centre this week as seniors of all ages and abilities took advantage of the chance to ‘have a go.’

The bus interchange in Lava Street is set for a safety upgrade.

MAJOR work is about to begin to improve safety at the Lava Street bus interchange.

The existing pedestrian crossing will be replaced with a new, raised pedestrian crossing approximately 40 metres to the east.

Works also include the construction of improved loading and unloading areas for buses, road and footpath renewals as well as a lighting upgrade.

Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said these works would formalise the location of the bus interchange after being moved from Koroit Street as part of the City Centre Renewal Project.

“Once the decision was made that this would be the permanent site for the city’s central bus exchange, it then became a

matter of attracting the necessary state government funding to carry out the infrastructure and safety improvements needed,” he said.

“At the same time, the road surface itself, as well as the footpaths, are showing their age, so it made sense to improve these as part of the same project.

“The footpath on the south side of Lava Street will be rebuilt and have a new asphalt layer applied.

“On the north side, we know that AusNet is planning to dig up part of this footpath over the next year or so in order for them to carry out gas works.

“The plan here is to carry out some minor works to improve safety in the short-term, then fully rebuild it once the AusNet works are complete.”

Cr Blain said another aspect of the

project was making provisions for a new public toilet.

“From the consultation we have done in recent years, we know that a public toilet is something that people would like to see in this area,” he said.

“So as part of the current works, we will be installing the utilities needed, so when future funding becomes available, the public toilet can be built and connected much more easily.

“CCTV cameras were another item raised, and it’s something we will continue to seek state government funding to implement.”

To minimise disruption, road asphalt finishing works will be carried out at night.

Footpath access to properties will be maintained for the majority of the time, with preparation works in front

Safety upgrade for bus interchange

of doorways being undertaken before opening hours where possible.

Works are anticipated to take approximately nine weeks, concluding prior to the busy summer period.

“While we aim to minimise the impact to traffic, there will be two periods where Lava Street is required to be closed in one direction for multiple days for concrete curing,” Cr Blain said.

These closures are anticipated to be late October and late November, and likely to incorporate the weekend period.

Buses will continue to arrive and depart in the area, but may operate on a single side of the street.

Motorists and pedestrians are asked to observe on-site signage.
