WARRNAMBOOL residents are being invited to have their say on kerbside waste collection services, both now and in the future.
In preparation for a new kerbside collection contract in 2026, the Warrnambool City Council is checking in with the community to see what’s working well and what could be improved.
Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said that the feedback from ‘Trash Talk –Warrnambool Waste Services Survey’ will help shape how council delivers kerbside waste and recycling services into the future, building on the successful introduction of FOGO and glass bins in recent years.
“Warrnambool was one of the first municipalities in Victoria to introduce the four-bin system, and overall it has been going quite well,” Cr Blain said.
“Most people want to do the right thing when it comes to waste and recycling, and people have adapted to the new system.
“With our new contract coming up, we want to look at what we can do to make the service even better.”
Cr Blain said that the survey looked to explore the wider community’s appetite for service changes that had been requested by some residents.
“Daytime vs night-time collections, an annual hard waste pick-up, weekly FOGO collections during spring, the frequency of glass collections, larger landfill bins for people willing to pay extra, it’s all on the table,” he said.
“As well as asking about the additional services residents might like to see, the survey also asks what they would be willing to pay for these extra services.
“Or potentially some changes to the service could result in a cost saving.
To the Editor,
Bushfires are a natural part of the Victorian landscape, but with the right planning and action, we can reduce their impact on communities, the environment and critical infrastructure.
Right across the state, Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) crews are working hard to reduce the risk and impact of bushfires through a combination of planned burning, non-burn bushfire risk management and strategic preparation.
Leaves, small branches, long grass and undergrowth can fuel bushfires making them faster, more intense and harder to control.
Bushfire risk management helps reduce this danger by removing excess vegetation (or fuel), protecting communities, the environment and critical infrastructure.
Less fuel means it’s harder for a fire to start and spread, and easier for our crews to contain.
That’s why last season we delivered bushfire risk management works across more than 109,000 hectares of public land.
The seasonal bushfire outlook for
spring asks Victorians to prepare for an increased risk, particularly in the state’s west, but also the southern coast and areas around Melbourne.
Our bushfire risk management program is underpinned by a significant body of scientific evidence, built over more than 35 years.
We use science and modelling tools to choose the right time and approach for delivery of our bushfire risk management program in each location or landscape, combined with our understanding of the ecological needs of our forests and the plants and animals that depend on them.
Planned burning plays a key role in our work in reducing bushfire risk.
In areas where planned burning isn’t suitable, such as near homes, on steep slopes or close to roads and towns, FFMVic uses non-burn bushfire management techniques.
These include mowing and slashing long grass, mulching dense vegetation, targeted spraying of invasive weeds and maintaining public road networks in forests and reserves.
Each method plays a vital role in reducing fuel loads and improving access for emergency services.
Over the coming weeks, you can expect to see our crews and contractors ramping up the mowing and slashing program.
“It’s important to remember that no service is free. All waste services are covered by the waste management fee in annual rates notices, and additional services would be reflected in this fee.
“So when negotiating our upcoming kerbside collection contract, we can look at the proportion of residents who want to see an additional service, how much they would be willing to pay, and see if this aligns with market conditions at the time.”
The survey can be taken online at www. yoursaywarrnambool.com.au.
Hard copies are also available at the Civic Centre, located at 25 Liebig Street Warrnambool.
Anyone who completes the survey has the option to go in the draw to win one of three $200 Warrnambool gift cards, redeemable at over 140 local businesses.
The survey closes at 5pm on Monday, November 10.
The timing of these works is important; if grass is slashed too early, before it has cured, it will only encourage regrowth.
Our top priority is to protect life, property and the environment from the risk of bushfires.
While Victoria will always have bushfires, we want you to know that when fires happen, we are ready to respond.
We have more than 1800 personnel on the frontline, including firefighters, fire lookout observers and fire support officers; firefighting equipment, including more than 500 ultralight tankers and close to 100 heavy tankers, and more than 50 aircraft contracted for the season ahead.
But being prepared for the bushfire season is a shared responsibility.
While FFMVic crews are working hard on public land, all Victorians are encouraged to start cleaning up around their properties to help reduce bushfire risk in their own communities.
And to keep up to date on planned burns near you, sign up to receive notifications at Planned Burns Victoria or download the VicEmergency app.

WARRNAMBOOL’S St Pius Hall will come alive with country music this weekend.
Members of the Warrnambool District Country Music Group have been working hard behind the scenes to bring together a quality line-up of musicians for this year’s ‘Country Music Spectacular.’
“This will be our third annual spectacular and no doubt it will be just as big and just as wonderful as past years,” music group president Robyn Gleeson said.
“All money raised from ticket sales this year will go towards the cost of beach wheelchairs, which will benefit many people in our community along with visitors to town.
“Over the last 25 years or so our group has raised in excess of $50,000 for various charities and we’re very proud of that.”
This weekend’s Country Music Spectacular, which will run from 11am-5pm at the St Pius Hall on Sunday, will feature resident band The Wranglers.
Also on the program are renowned artists Cameron Mason, Lance Birrell, Christine Clifford, Matt Manning and Brendan Scott.
“We have a fantastic line-up of performers who will no doubt have the audience singing and dancing along,” Robyn said.
Dance enthusiasts will have the chance to warm up their shoes before the extravaganza, with a special ‘Dance Night’ organised for tomorrow night (Saturday, October 18).
Also to be held at the St Pius Hall on Morris Road, the evening of dancing will kick off at 7.30pm and run through until 11pm.
For a small admission fee, tea and coffee will be provided and participants are encouraged to take along drinks and nibbles.
The Warrnambool District Country Music Group, which proudly boasts in excess of 170 members, holds regular country music afternoons in Warrnambool.
“On the third Sunday of each month we have concerts at the City Memorial Bowls Club from 1pm5pm.
“We can get up to about 150 people at these concerts; many of them enjoy lunch at City Memorial first before moving into the room for a wonderful social afternoon of country music – everyone is welcome.”

Warrnambool District Country Music Group members Hayley White, Joe Musico and Robyn Gleeson (president) are looking forward to this weekend’s ‘spectacular.’

WARRNAMBOOL’S Our Lady Help of Christians church will celebrate its 50th birthday next month.
Parishioners are planning to celebrate the event with a special program of activities on Saturday, November 8.
Visitors will be able to enjoy afternoon tea from 2pm-4pm, along with the chance to check out the various history boards on display.
A mass with Bishop Bird is planned for 6pm that evening, with a visual display both before and after mass – and tea/coffee to follow.
Our Lady Help of Christians parish was first established in January, 1973.
According to records, it started from a ‘good base,’ already having a school and large block of land on which to build a church and a priest’s residence and office.
The then Father Downes was saying mass in the new wing of the school on Wednesday nights for that year and every Sunday from 1974, until the church opened the following year.
The then parish priest of the time wrote ‘In this international Women’s Year, we are dedicating a church to the model of all women and it is therefore fitting that the church should be dedicated to Our Lady Help of Christians.’
Parishioners Pat King and Marie Harney are looking forward to celebrating 50 years of OLHC.

FOR all the fun and colour of Oaks Day, without the pressure of an expensive outfit, head to the Warrnambool RSL.
Thursday, November 6 looks set to be a day of colour, fun, raffles and plenty of laughter when Rotary Warrnambool Daybreak hosts its very first fundraising Oaks Day Luncheon.
“This is the first time we’ve held an Oaks Day event so we’re hoping the community will get behind it and come along,” member Cheryl Bellman said.
“We will have sweeps on every race and there’ll be some prizes for a fun Fashions on the Carpet (with a twist).
“It’s not about spending a lot of money on a hat or an outfit, it’s about getting together for a fun day with friends – and making new friends – while hopefully raising some money in the process.
“Rotary supports many local, national and international causes and we thought an Oaks Day luncheon would be a great way to raise a few dollars.”
While there will be no betting facilities at the RSL,
punters are encouraged to take part in the sweeps throughout the day.
Admission tickets will be $50 which includes a welcome drink along with a light lunch.
“Why not get a group of friends or family together and take advantage of the shuttle bus, which will pick you up from home and return you at the end of the day?
“We’ve very grateful for the support of the Warrnambool RSL and are looking forward to a fun day out.”
The Oaks Day luncheon will start at 12 noon on Thursday, November 6.

THE deteriorating condition of roads across the western district remain a high concern for motorists and residents.
Port Fairy local Ross Knudsen is all too familiar with the state of the Prince Highway and has seen several cars “come to grief” from his front door.
“It’s an absolutely horrific stretch of road, as are so many across the district,” he said.
“What is it going to take for this government to get real, stop ignoring us and fix the roads and highways?
“These roads are disgraceful, unsafe and dangerous and something needs to be done now, not later.”
Within the past fortnight alone, Ross has seen drivers navigate large potholes, with one driver coming to grief thanks to a front wheel blowout – and all while travelling well within the 60 kilometre speed limit.
“This car hit one of the potholes o the highway and his tyre blew out,” Ross aid.
“How dangerous and how disastrous could
this have been if the driver was travelling faster – or if it had happened inside a 100 kilometre zone?”
Ross believes this road “saga” is frustrating to all road users whether they are travellers, locals, truckies or interstate travellers.
He has been campaigning and complaining about the condition of the Princes Hwy at Port Fairy for many years.
Unfortunately for the residents who reside along the Princes Highway, they continue to feel the impacts of road pavement degradation, potholes, dangerous debris strewn over the road as potholes are enlarged, traffic noise from the rumbling of trucks as they navigate large uneven sections of roadway, and damage to vehicles including wheel rims and tyres.
“Our politicians, in particular the Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne, continue to shrug us off and ignore the complaints that the people of Victoria are voicing,” he said.

“I watched an ABC news item late last week about the dire situation of Victoria’s regional roads and there was not a politician in sight willing to state the case of the government.
“I have invited Labor politicians to visit Port Fairy to see for themselves the state of the highway but so far there has been dead silence and the responses to my requests go unanswered.”
Ross believes safety concerns are being ignored at the highest level.
“The public, councils, and other state politicians are providing proof to support claims of damage to vehicles and road conditions and the Minister for Roads and Road Safety simply ignores advice and the complaints.”
In response to questions from the Warrnambool Weekly, Minister for Roads
and Road Safety Melissa Horne said crews were conducting weekly inspections of the Princes Highway to monitor road conditions and complete any necessary repairs.
“We’re completing rebuilding a section of the Prince Highway at Port Fairy, between Villiers Street and Phillip Street,” she said.
“We are rebuilding and resurfacing roads across our network to keep motorists moving safely and smoothly on our regional roads.”
She added that the state government’s $976 million Better Roads Blitz was the largest road maintenance investment ever delivered in a single year in Victoria – and that 70 per cent of the investment would be delivered in regional Victoria.
* These photos, submitted by Ross Knudsen, were recently taken outside his Princes Hwy home.

THE Koroit Fire Brigade will open its doors to the public this Sunday for a special community information day.
As part of the current state-wide ‘Fire Ready Campaign,’ and amid drought conditions, almost 150 fire brigades will open their doors to community members throughout October, helping them to prepare for fire season.
With record rainfall deficits and an increased risk of fire for much of the southwest region, local CFA volunteers are prompting residents to get fire ready.
“We are concerned about the lack of water roadside, and dams are really low particularly as you head further north,” Koroit brigade captain Steve Giblin said.
“Normally the ground would still be moist at this time of year but it’s very dry and that’s a real concern.
“We’re encouraging all residents to start work now on cleaning up dead trees on their properties, ensuring they mow regularly to keep grass low and ensure firewood and other highly flammable items are well away from homes.”
Areas of particular concern for the Koroit brigade this season will be the Lowreys Road area, the western edge of Tower Hill, and the north-western edge of the town bounding the rail trail.
“All homes in the Irvings Lane/Black Street areas could also be prone to ember attack if a fire does break out so people are encouraged to prepare now and be ready to act in the event of an emergency.
“On Sunday we will have community safety presenters here to discuss areas of concern and what residents can do in the lead-up to summer and what will no doubt be a dangerous fire period,” Steve said.
The ‘Fire Ready’ initiative is a great way to educate residents in understanding what an ember attack is and how they can protect their house.
As a thriving summer tourist region, one of the biggest challenges for brigades is communicating with holiday goers renting houses, residing in caravan parks or those driving in for the day.
Steve also stressed it was important for people to stay informed via the VicEmergency App and listen to the local radio.
This Sunday’s information day will run from 11am until 2pm at the Koroit fire station.
A free barbecue will run during the day and there will also be demonstrations from volunteers and some free activities for the kids.

THE always-popular Warrnambool Show OFF will return to the showgrounds this month.
The Show OFF has become a hugely popular part of the annual Warrnambool Show, held the night prior to gates opening for the big day.
This year’s Show OFF will run from 5.30pm until 10pm next Friday, October 24, offering an exciting line-up of entertainment, rides, food and music.

crowds for years and will be joined by some of his music academy students for a very special performance at the showgrounds.
Some of the show’s favourite rides, from the Showmen’s Guild, will also be operating throughout the night providing an exciting opening to what no doubt will be another fabulous Warrnambool Show.
Gates open at 5.30pm next Friday, with music from 6pm-9.30am.

THERE was plenty of laughter and reminiscing about “the good old days” when former students and friends of Warrnambool Tech held their annual reunion last weekend.
The ‘get together,’ held at Macey’s in Warrnambool on Sunday, saw a large crowd of almost 60 people enjoy lunch and an afternoon of shared stories and reflection.
For organiser Ken McKenzie, who once played football for the Tech school, the day was all about friendship and the chance to catch up with old mates.
“We regularly hold get togethers of former Warrnambool Tech School players (footballers) from around 1962 but sadly we’ve lost a few over the years,” Ken said.
“It was so nice to see everyone back smiling and having a good time. Some people hadn’t seen each other for about 60 years so there was plenty to talk about.
“It certainly became a long afternoon but it was one we will long remember.
“We even had one person travel from Geelong and another from Wangaratta just for the event which was pretty special – and a man who turns 90 in a couple of weeks had never been to one of these get togethers before so it was lovely to see him there too.”

THE Victorian Government has approved a proposal to make 15,000sqm of land along Harrington Road available for key worker and affordable housing.
Council was notified of the decision by the Department of Transport and Planning on Thursday (October 9).
The approval paves the way for up to 50 modular homes – a mix of one, two and three-bedroom houses - to be installed on the site.
“This is great news for Warrnambool because we’re a step closer to having more homes for key workers and more affordable housing for families in need,” Mayor Cr Ben Blain said.
“This is a novel approach to housing that will help employers and help families who are keen to work in Warrnambool but have struggled to find a place to live because of the housing shortage.
“We’ll now move towards a procurement phase that will involve seeking a partner
to finance, design and construct and manage the delivery of homes and enabling infrastructure including roads and drainage.
“We are aiming to secure the involvement of a community housing agency to ensure strong, positive long-term operation over the anticipated 25-year life of the project.”
The project land was part of a buffer zone around the former saleyards. The key worker and affordable housing project is being pursued along with the development of a master plan for the entire area.
Following an Expression of Interest process, shortlisted respondents will be invited to tender for the project, with council looking to award a contract in early 2026.
“We believe this project provides an opportunity to deliver, in a relatively short time frame, a very practical part of the solution to the housing shortage,” Cr

THE Warrnambool Community Garden was once again a hive of activity last weekend as an anticipated 500+ people enjoyed ‘Discovery Day.’
Despite the occasional showers and cool conditions, crowds flocked to the gardens on Saturday to browse a range of displays and enjoy the many and varied areas throughout the gardens.
Convenor Rob Porter said organisers were absolutely thrilled with the turnout and the enthusiasm shown by so many.
“We had an absolutely fantastic day,” he said.
“Because entry was free it was hard to get an exact number in terms of how many people came through the gate but we estimate between 500 and 600 at least.
“Everyone braved the weather and enjoyed talking to our team at
various spots throughout the gardens and some also took the chance to purchase some seedlings and native plants while they were here.”
Free face painting was enjoyed by some of the younger visitors, while the gumboot throwing competition was also a big hit.
“The gumboot throws were very entertaining,” Rob said.
“The condition was that people could only throw a gumboot that their foot could fit in which made for a fair competition.”
A baked stall and Devonshire teas kept hungers at bay and live music was also enjoyed throughout the day.
Entry to the Warrnambool Community Garden is free and visitors are welcome year round – anytime the gate is open.
The garden can be found at the corner of Derby and Grieve streets, Warrnambool.

STUDENTS at Allansford and District Primary School have created special bonds with participants from 360 Southwest.
Across four visits to the school this year, participants and students have come together to share activities, learn new skills and build lasting connections.
The visits and activities were organised as part of 360 Southwest’s Community Connections program which creates a meaningful and inclusive learning experience for everyone involved.
From playing basketball and trivia through to karate, Gaga, and even exploring the world of robotics, each visit has been filled with laughter, teamwork, and genuine understanding.
The Community Connections program aims to strengthen ties between people living with

disabilities and their local community.
By working alongside school students, participants have the chance to develop social confidence, communication skills, and independence in a welcoming environment.
At the same time, students gain valuable insight into inclusion and diversity, learning the importance of empathy, respect, and connection.
This partnership highlights the power of community collaboration, showing how when people come together, everyone benefits.
The participants and students have enriched each other’s lives, helping to build a more compassionate and inclusive future for the Warrnambool region.

WRAD Health is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a special fundraising dinner that will help it launch into the future.
The $100 per head dinner on Thursday, November 13 at The Pavilion in Warrnambool will honour the health service’s history while helping it to continue expanding its services for the community.
“Every dollar raised will go directly back into improving healthcare services for south-West Victoria, including bulk-billing GP, mental health, alcohol and other drug support, family and loved ones’ support, youth outreach and more,” CEO Mark Powell said.
“As a not-for-profit service, we’re always limited in funds to provide the types of free and low-cost services that we do for the community so this is an opportunity to raise much-needed funds to continue offering our diverse range of services.”
There will also be a 40th birthday sausage sizzle at the WRAD
Health building in Merri Street on Wednesday November 19, between 12 and 2 pm.
WRAD Health was registered as a not-for-profit charitable organisation on January 1, 1986.
The organisation started as the Western Regional Association for Alcohol and Drug Dependence (WRAADD) in 1986 with three staff members, a rented residence and less than 40 clients.
It later changed to Western Regional Alcohol and Drug Centre (WRAD) and more recently WRAD Health to better reflect its broader health services.
Mr Powell said WRAD Health was born out of community need, having started after concerns in the local Apex club about the high rate of alcohol use in the region.
“It’s important to honour our origins as a community-based service which has continued to grow to meet the changing needs of the community,” Mr Powell said.
“Over time, WRAD Health has expanded to support people, including pharmacotherapy and more recently providing a bulkbilling medical practice to provide accessible and affordable care to the broader community.
Mr Powell said WRAD Health was grateful for the ongoing partnerships with key agencies.
“We will continue to expand our partnerships to ensure we provide the best possible services,” he said.
WRAD Health is continuing to lobby for a residential rehab centre and has almost completed a new feasibility study to seek funding for the Lookout.
“We are also very aware of the need for integrated health services to meet the co-morbid health conditions of people presenting to our medical services,” Mr Powell said.
“We will be seeking to expand our services to house integrated health care for the community from a new purpose-built building.”
AFTER a successful first event in 2024, the Warrnambool Wheelie Convoy returns next Wednesday, October 22.
People using wheelchairs, wheelie walkers, mobility scooters or trikes are invited to join the convoy, which will start at Lake Pertobe from 11am.
There are two courses to choose from - a 400m short course at Lake Pertobe, and a longer course that heads down Pertobe Road, along Worm Bay Road and back to Lake Pertobe via the Foreshore Promenade.
Warrnambool City Council coordinator community programs Clare Vaughan said the convoy was designed to promote social connection, physical activity and the use of Warrnambool’s accessible foreshore infrastructure.
“Each year, Warrnambool gets more and more accessible, so this is a great opportunity to catch up with some fellow wheeled transport users and get active,” she said.
“The longer course will go past the new beach access ramp at McGennans, and there’s also the new amenities block nearby, as well as new footpaths that better link the promenade with Lake Pertobe.”
More than 80 people took part in the inaugural convoy last year.
“Last year’s event was so positive and it was really great to see the different ways people were able to stay active,” she said.
“And I think that really spoke to the heart of what this is about.
“Whether you use a wheelchair, a walker, an electric scooter… it’s all about finding something that works for you and allows you to enjoy the physical, mental and social benefits of a walk or a roll in the fresh air in

Overall the quality improved across most categories with some supplementary fed cattle, particularly in the trade weight classes.
Lighter cattle also displayed better breeding although there was still a tail of lighter conditioned dairy and crossbred types.
The bullock and grown steer yarding presented improved quality with fewer manufacturing types evident.
The cow offering consisted of approximately 55% beef cows with the remainder being dairy types.
Not all regular buyers were in attendance.
The yarding comprised 113 bullocks, 603 trade cattle, 785 cows and 126 grown bulls.
The market was softer with prices easing by 10 to 20c/kg for bullocks grown steers and trade cattle.
Despite this there was continued strong demand for well bred feeder steers and heifers at the reduced rates.

WARRNAMBOOL’S All Abilities netballers, the ‘Stingers’ have continued their on-court success, winning the recent Special Olympics in Ballarat.
The Stingers headed to Ballarat last Saturday week to enjoy the “full Olympics experience” including an official opening ceremony, torch run and lighting of a cauldron.
“It was a really special experience for them, not just on the netball court but off it too,” team coach Marg Morgan said.
“It was just like the Olympics with all the hype and atmosphere.
“And there wasn’t just netball played, there was seven or eight different sports at various venues including basketball, table tennis, badminton, soccer and swimming.”
Having won both their games on the day, the Stingers were announced overall champions of the netball competition.
“They all played really well and they had a lot of fun throughout the day,” Marg said.
“The police association has been like custodians of the games for many years now and they played a big role on the day.
“The torch was named the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics and many of them spent time watching games and interacting with the players which was lovely to see.”
Not only did the Stingers bring home gold medals, two of their players – Skye and Cody – were also awarded a ‘Spirit of the Games’ medallion.
The Stingers’ final day of competition for the season will be this Saturday on their home courts at the Warrnambool stadium.
“Tomorrow (Saturday) will be the final day of the circuit,” Marg said.
“We will play against Ballarat and Horsham from 9.30am and spectators are most welcome.
“Based on games already played, for the third consecutive year, the Stingers has won the Regional All Abilities Netball League competition regardless of tomorrow’s results.”

WARRNAMBOOL Rangers have celebrated another successful season, both on and off the field.

A GROUP of cyclists have made their way from Warrnambool to Box Hill this week, shining a light on veteran homelessness.
Riders on the inaugural Tour de V Centre left Warrnambool early Monday morning for their fourday cycle across regional Victoria, designed to raise awareness of the

urgent issue of homelessness among veterans.
Sadly, Australian veterans are almost three times more likely to experience homelessness than

the general population and face alarmingly higher rates of suicide.
Organised by Vasey RSL Care, the ride took the group from Warrnambool to Box Hill, passing through Ararat, Ballarat and Geelong.
The tour officially launched at South West TAFE last Sunday, bringing together riders, support crew and the local community.
Attendees were inspired by talks from veteran Liz Wheeler who undertook the Nancy Wake Memorial ride in France earlier this year, and the impressive adventurer and author Paul Watkins.
They reminded everyone of the strength and support of community.
“This ride is so much more than people getting on bikes,” Warrnambool veteran Adam Kent said.
“It’s about bringing communities together, raising awareness of veteran homelessness, and remembering that connected communities save lives.”
The Tour de V Centre has received tremendous support from communities across Victoria, showcasing the strong commitment to supporting veterans in need.
