Met dat beeld in gedachten begint architectenbureau SeARCH samen met WestCord Hotels in 2013 aan het concept van Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam. Het uitgangspunt: de historische overzeese band tussen Amsterdam en Indonesië. Het blijkt een schot in de roos: in een tender met tientallen projecten kiezen een speciale jury en de gemeente Amsterdam dit concept als winnaar. Vijf jaar later opent Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam haar deuren. Alles ademt hier avontuur en gastvrijheid. Het is een ontmoeting tussen Oost en West… Two Worlds Connected. Water stroomt al ruim vijftig jaar door onze organisatie. De wieg van onze hotelgroep staat op Vlieland en twee van onze hotels hebben een bijzondere link met het stoomvaartverleden van Nederland: het ss Rotterdam en Hotel New York. De locatie van Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam is dan ook bewust gekozen. Op het Java-eiland gingen wereldontdekkers, landverhuizers en handelsreizigers je voor. Waar zij met grote oceaanstomers op weg gingen naar onbekende oorden, stap jij in een levende herinnering aan ‘De Oost’. Selamat datang! A second living room for the residents of Java Island and curious travellers. With that in mind, architectural firm SeARCH and WestCord Hotels start developing the concept of Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam in 2013. The starting point: the historical maritime connection between Amsterdam and Indonesia. The idea turns out to be a home run: in a tender with dozens of projects, a special jury and the Amsterdam city government selects the concept as the winner. Five years later, Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam opens its doors. Everything here exudes adventure and hospitality. It is a meeting between East and West... Two Worlds Connected. Water has flowed through our organization for over fifty years. The cradle of our hotel group is on the Frisian Island of Vlieland. Two of our hotels have a special link with the steam-sailing past of the Netherlands: the ss Rotterdam and Hotel New York. The location of Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam has been chosen with care. On Java Island, world explorers, emigrants and business travellers came before you. Where they boarded large ocean liners to discover unknown places, you’re setting foot in a living memory of ‘the East’. Selamat datang! JAVA EILAND Golfbreker, maritiem middelpunt en parel in het IJ Honderdduizenden voetstappen, vele tonnen aan goederen en ontelbare verhalen… Het Java-eiland kent een bewogen en avontuurlijke geschiedenis. Eind 19e eeuw aangelegd als golfbreker voor de Oostelijke Handelskade, maar uitgegroeid tot één van de bekendste namen in de Nederlandse maritieme historie. Van 1910 tot 1970 was het de thuishaven van Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland (SMN). Grote oceaanstomers voeren hiervandaan in lijndienst op Nederlands-Indië en vervoerden post, goederen en passagiers. Na een periode van krakers, kunstenaars en stadsnomaden ondergaat het eiland in de jaren negentig een facelift en wordt het herontwikkeld tot hippe woonwijk en ‘architectonische parel’ in het IJ. Water en groen gaan hier hand in hand. Vanaf park ‘de Bogortuin’ op de oostelijke punt, ontvouwen zich vijf binnentuinen over het Java-eiland. Ze dragen namen die stuk voor stuk verwijzen naar de Indonesische bestemming van de SMN: het eiland Java. De laatste binnentuin is het schitterende groene middelpunt van ons hotel.

Het zijn de vlammende zonsondergangen, maar ook de vele schepen die het eiland passeren. En wat dacht je van het panoramisch uitzicht op het Centraal Station en de tegenovergelegen Passenger Terminal? Op de westelijke punt van het Java-eiland ervaar je nog de weidsheid van het IJ, terwijl je vanaf de Javakade de dynamiek van de zinderende stad voelt. Het is een combinatie van twee werelden. Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat we met WestCord Hotels deze plek kozen voor Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam.

JAVA island Breakwater, maritime centre and architectural gem in the IJ Hundreds of thousands of footsteps, many tons of goods and countless stories ... Java Island has a turbulent and adventurous history. Built at the end of the 19th century as a breakwater for the Eastern trading quay, it has become one of the best-known names in Dutch maritime history. From 1910 to 1970, it was home to the Netherlands Steamship Company, also known as SMN (Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland). Large ocean liners departed from here on a scheduled service to the Dutch East Indies and transported mail, goods and passengers. After a period of squatters, artists and city nomads, the Island undergoes a facelift in the 1990s and is redeveloped into a hip residential area and ‘architectural gem’ in the IJ. Water and greenery go hand in hand here. From the ‘Bogortuin’ park on the eastern tip, five inner gardens unfold over Java Island. They each bear a name that refers to the Indonesian destination of the SMN: the Island of Java. The last inner garden is the beautiful green centre of our hotel. Both flaming sunsets and many ships pass by the Island. And what about the panoramic view of the Central Station and the Passenger Terminal? At the western tip of Java Island, you can experience the vastness of the IJ, while feeling the dynamics of the buzzing city from the Java quay. It is a combination of two worlds. Which is exactly why at WestCord Hotels we chose this location for Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam.

baken op west Ze wijst de weg naar zee… De strakke lijnen van Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam komen samen in de scherpe westelijke hoek. Toch is de ‘taartpunt’ van architectenbureau SeARCH even stijlvol als strak. Slanke stalen en aluminium profielen, de houten hoofddraagconstructie, bamboe en glas geven het pand een industrieel, maar warm en duurzaam karakter. Het vele glas zorgt voor transparantie, veel licht en een fenomenaal uitzicht over het IJ en de stad. Door de puntige vorm kijk je dwars door het hotel heen en ervaar je zelfs buiten de bijzondere ambiance van binnen.
Beacon on the west She points the way to the sea... The clean lines of Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam meet in the sharp western corner. Yet the ‘wedge’ of architectural firm SeARCH is as stylish as it is sleek. The main supporting structure made out of wood, the slim steel and aluminum profiles, the bamboo and glass give the building an industrial, but warm and sustainable character. The abundant glass provides transparency, lots of light and a phenomenal view over the IJ and the city. At the narrow end of the hotel’s pointed shape, you can look straight through the building. This allows you to experience the special ambiance even standing outside.

‘It was more about creating an environment than creating a building’
In SeARCH of Perfection Uniek… Niet alleen in architectuur, maar ook in duurzaamheid en in betekenis voor de wijk. Met die opdracht ging architectenbureau SeARCH aan de slag. Het resultaat: een symbool van de historische maritieme verbinding tussen Amsterdam en Indonesië. Het bureau ontwierp een huiskamer voor zowel de avontuurlijke wereldreiziger als voor de geïnteresseerde Amsterdammer. Het café/restaurant, de bakkerij en wellness die rond de indrukwekkende subtropische tuin liggen, zijn allemaal toegankelijk voor de buurtbewoners. Niet voor niets won Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam de prijs voor ‘Publiek Gebouw van het Jaar 2018’.
In SeARCH of Perfection Unique... In terms of architecture, sustainability and impact on the neighbourhood. That was the assignment with which architectural firm SeARCH set to work. The result: a symbol of the historical maritime connection between Amsterdam and Indonesia. The agency designed a living room for both adventurous world travellers and interested Amsterdam residents. The café/restaurant, bakery and wellness centre surrounding the impressive subtropical garden are all open to local residents. It’s no coincidence that Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam won the prize ‘Public Building of the Year 2018’.

Grensverleggend Het ontwerp van SeARCH verlegt op veel vlakken grenzen. De 176 kamers rond het atrium met de spectaculaire binnentuin zijn volledig geprefabriceerd (inclusief een deel van inrichting) en zijn op locatie als legostenen gestapeld in de hoofdzakelijk houten draagconstructie. Groundbreaking The SeARCH design pushes boundaries in many areas. The 176 rooms around the atrium with the spectacular indoor garden are fully prefabricated (including part of the interior) and were stacked on site like legos into the mainly wooden supporting structure. The hotel has garnered praise with this modular wooden construction and its sustainable character. In its opening year, SeARCH and Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam won the following awards:

We aimed high with Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam: we wanted to become the ‘greenest hotel in the Netherlands’. We turned dreams into action. Into a hotel that uses as much energy as it produces and is greener than green. In every area and in every fibre. Literally...
De constructie en afwerking bestaan voor een groot deel uit hernieuwbare en herbruikbare bronnen als hout en bamboe. Niet alleen komt er bij de bouw met hout en bamboe minder koolstofdioxide vrij, nieuwe aanplant zorgt ook voor ‘opslag’ van CO2. Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam kenmerkt zich daarnaast door de vele besparende maatregelen. Het atrium en de hoge ruiten in de kamers zorgen bijvoorbeeld voor veel daglichttoetreding waardoor minder kunstmatige (energie-efficiënte LED-)verlichting nodig is. De afsluitbare balkons van de hotelkamers zorgen behalve voor een spectaculair uitzicht ook voor een thermische buffer. Water wordt bespaard met besparende douchekoppen en sensorgestuurde kranen. Voor bewatering van de binnentuin gebruiken we hemelwater. Andere duurzame toepassingen en maatregelen zijn onder andere: zonnecellen in zowel het dak als aan de gevel, vloerverwarming en -koeling, warmte- en koudeopslag (WKO) in de aardbodem, warmteterugwinning uit afvalwater, keukenapparatuur en lucht en het omzetten van organisch afval naar energie in bio-energiecentrales.
The construction and finish consists largely of renewable and reusable resources such as wood and bamboo. Not only does construction with wood and bamboo release less carbon dioxide, but planting new trees also ‘stores’ CO 2. Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam is also characterized by its many energy saving measures. For example, the atrium and the high windows in the rooms provide a lot of daylight, meaning less artificial (energy-efficient LED) lighting is required. The closeable balconies of the hotel rooms offer not only a spectacular view, but also serve as a thermal buffer. Water is saved with water-efficient shower heads and sensor-controlled faucets. We use rainwater to water the indoor garden. Other sustainable applications and measures include: solar cells in the roof and on the facade, underfloor heating and cooling, underground thermal energy storage, heat recovery from waste water, air and kitchen appliances, and bioenergy plants that convert organic waste into energy.
BREEAM-NL BREEAM-NL Nieuwbouw en Renovatie is in Nederland hét keurmerk om nieuwbouwprojecten en grootschalige renovaties te beoordelen op duurzaamheidsprestaties. Gebouwen worden beoordeeld op negen verschillende duurzaamheidsonderwerpen, waaronder energie, water, materialen en afval. BREEAM staat voor Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method en werd oorspronkelijk ontwikkeld en geïntroduceerd door het Building Research Establishment (BRE), een Engelse onderzoeksinstantie vergelijkbaar met het Nederlandse TNO. Voor het ontwerp sleepte Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam het BREEAM Excellent-certificaat in de wacht.
BREEAM-NL In the Netherlands, BREEAM-NL New Construction and Renovation is the leading quality mark to assess the sustainability performance of newly constructed buildings and large-scale renovations. Buildings are assessed on nine different sustainability topics, including energy, water, materials and waste. BREEAM stands for Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method and was originally developed and introduced by the Building Research Establishment (BRE), an English research organization similar to the Dutch TNO (The Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research). Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam was awarded the BREEAM Excellent certificate for the design.

Een stukje Java in Amsterdam. De subtropische binnentuin – de JakartaTuin – is dé blikvanger van Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam en is een verlengstuk van de overige binnentuinen op het Java-eiland. De tuin loopt vanaf Bakkerij Westers aan de achterkant van het hotel tot aan de punt in Café Jakarta. Of je nu door het atrium wandelt, in Café Jakarta zit of uit je hotelkamer stapt, je waant je overal in Indonesië. Het ‘groene hart’ is dan ook geïnspireerd op de Indonesische wouden en kwam tot stand in samenwerking met Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam. De stichting is een specialist op het gebied van tropische en inheemse bomen en planten. Ook nam de Hortus de bordjes in de tuin voor haar rekening.
A piece of Java in Amsterdam. The subtropical indoor ‘Jakarta garden’ is the eye-catcher of our hotel. It’s an extension of the other inner gardens on Java Island. The garden runs from Westers Bakery at the back of the hotel all the way to the tip in Café Jakarta. Whether you’re strolling through the atrium, sitting in Café Jakarta or you’ve just stepped outside your hotel room, it feels like you’re in Indonesia everywhere. This ‘green heart’ was inspired by the Indonesian forests and was created in collaboration with Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam. This foundation is an expert in the field of tropical and native trees and plants. The Hortus also took care of the signs in the garden.

Through the roof Meters-high palms, Asian trees and medium height plants ... What is green must stay green. Creating an indoor garden is complex, but maintaining it is equally challenging. That’s where the specialists of Copijn Landscaping come in. They prevent pests and make sure the trees don’t grow through the roof.
Metershoge palmen, Aziatische bomen en halfhoge beplanting... Wat groen is, moet groen blijven. Het creëren van een binnentuin is complex, maar het onderhouden is minstens zo uitdagend. Daar zijn de specialisten van Copijn Groenaanleg en beheer bij betrokken. Ze voorkomen ongedierte en zorgen ervoor dat de bomen niet door het dak groeien.
History of Hortus Amsterdam, the Dutch East India Company and the Hortus are inextricably linked. Founded by the city council, the Hortus has played a role in education and research for more than 375 years. From a garden with medicinal plants, the Hortus grew into a botanical garden with over four thousand tropical and native trees and plants. The Hortus also played a remarkable role in the history of coffee: because of the high price the Arabs asked for their coffee, the Dutch East India Company decided to grow its own in Batavia. The Hortus also received two small plants in 1706. These coffee plants grew well and their descendants were brought to South America where they stood at the cradle of all major coffee plantations.
Historie Hortus Amsterdam, de VOC en de Hortus zijn onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden. Ooit opgericht door het stadsbestuur speelt de Hortus al meer dan 375 jaar een rol in onderwijs en onderzoek. Van een tuin met medicinale planten groeide de Hortus uit tot een botanische tuin met meer dan vierduizend tropische en inheemse bomen en planten. Ook in de geschiedenis van koffie speelt de Hortus een bijzondere rol: door de hoge koffieprijs van de Arabieren besloot de VOC om zelf koffie te gaan verbouwen in Batavia. De Hortus ontving in 1706 ook twee kleine plantjes. Deze koffieplanten groeiden prima en hun nakomelingen werden naar Zuid-Amerika gebracht waar ze aan de wieg stonden van alle grote koffieplantages.

Vier eeuwen Menselijke verhalen en een inspirerende inkijk in de Indonesische cultuur. Het Tropenmuseum stelt een deel van haar rijkscollectie beschikbaar aan Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam. De authentieke Indonesische objecten vertellen het verhaal en tonen de rijkdom van de oude cultuur waarmee Nederland vier eeuwen lang verbonden was. De collectie wisselt jaarlijks.
Four Centuries Human stories as well as an inspiring insight into Indonesian culture. The Tropenmuseum has made part of its national collection available to Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam. The authentic Indonesian objects tell the story and show the richness of the ancient culture with which the Netherlands was connected for four centuries. The collection changes annually.

Hijs de zeilen! De roemruchte tijden van wereld- en handelsreizigers herleven in de gevels van Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam. Deze schilderijen staan symbool voor de avontuurlijke maritieme geschiedenis van Amsterdam en de historische link tussen Amsterdam en ‘De Oost’. Naast de getoonde schilderijen, zeilen ook de schepen van olieverfschilderij ‘Inscheping van Michiel de Ruyter, aan boord van De Zeven Provinciën, voor de tocht naar Chatham’ (1857) van Everhardus Koster over onze oostelijke gevels.
Hoist the sails! The glorious days of world and trade travellers live on in the facades of Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam. These paintings symbolize Amsterdam’s adventurous maritime history and the historical link between Amsterdam and ‘The East’. In addition to the displayed paintings, the ships of 1857 oil painting ‘Embarkation of Michiel de Ruyter, on board of De Zeven Provinciën, for the Raid on Chatham’ by Everhardus Koster are also sailing across our eastern facades. We are proud to serve our coffee and tea in Café Jakarta in porcelain developed by Royal Delft especially for WestCord Hotels and Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam. Doubly so because these remarkable cups and saucers are produced on Java.

In onze bakkerij werken we nauw samen met Bakkerij van Maanen. Al meer dan honderd jaar een begrip en minstens zo duurzaam als Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam. In 2018 ontving de bakkerij het label Goed Groen Groei. De handgemaakte broodproducten met een unieke smaak en karakter zijn bereid met ingrediënten zonder toevoegingen.

In our bakery, we work closely with Bakery van Maanen. This bakery has been a household name for over a century and is at least as sustainable as Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam. In 2018, the bakery received the ‘Good Green Growth’ label. Their hand-made bread products with unique taste and character are made with additive-free ingredients.

De bedrijfskleding van Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam komt van producent By Rockland. Deze kleding bestaat voor het grootste deel uit reststoffen van de grootste kledingmerken ter wereld. Er zijn daardoor al meer dan drie verschillende batik designs in de kleding verwerkt! De kleding is in één atelier in Europa gefabriceerd waardoor het transport minimaal was.
