Spring has arrived and that means a fresh start for the year. In fact, each new day is a fresh start. A new day worth celebrating. The sun is shining, the daffodils are flowering! Great weather for going out and about.
Spring has arrived in our hotels too, and we are busy with a major spring clean. 104 rooms are being completely renovated in our hotel in Eindhoven, and from June onward, they will once again be a joy to stay in. Renovations are underway in nearly all our hotels. That includes The Market Hotel in Groningen. Although in this case, there is a very unfortunate reason. On the evening of Sunday February 9th, a troublemaker entered the hotel and set fire to a public toilet area. The restaurant suffered serious damage as a result. The incident has had a deep impact on us and our employees. At the same time, we have shown resilience and came together to restore the affected areas. We have received an outpouring of help and many kind messages of support, which are enabling us to reopen the restaurant in record time. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has stepped in to help. The restaurant is fresh, renewed, and
ready for a festive comeback. And we will certainly make it a celebration.

1. HOW DOES THE THEME ‘CELEBRATE LIFE’ TRANSLATE IN YOUR ART?
‘To me, “celebrate life” means seeing beauty in the little things in life and embracing the moments of joy, freedom and connection. Art is emotion. You immediately feel a connection with art. My work isn't political or critical of society. In terms of themes and use of colour, I keep things more light-hearted. The characters in my paintings discover the world with the pure and unbridled enthusiasm we also find in young children. There's so much beauty to behold in the universe. When art lovers get that feeling, then I've achieved my goal.’
2. WHAT ARE THOSE TIMES IN YOUR OWN LIFE THAT HAVE BEEN WORTH CELEBRATING?
‘I think celebrations are not just for big milestones, but rather for the small, unexpected moments that make life so special. The times when I felt completely free, had an indepth conversation with a loved one, or when my daughter tells me she loves me. Those are the times that make me feel I'm alive, that inspire me and nurture my creativity. Yet I've also had the privilege of exhibiting my paintings and sculptures at a variety of prestigious locations around the world. Working towards an event like that, is a treat in itself. But a successful opening is always a cause for celebration. Interaction
with visitors to fairs or private viewings whose curiosity has been aroused is inspiring to me and always a reason to celebrate. Above all, motherhood is the biggest celebration in my life. My daughter Bobby Lou has not only made me grow as a person, but I've also evolved enormously as an artist because of her arrival. She's the love of my life and the biggest source of inspiration, and personal things that come from her are constantly finding their way into my recent work. Now that she's getting older, she's got more and more to say and displays particular preferences for certain things. I reflect this in my art. My paintings are really a diary of my earthly life, and that's mostly one long celebration.’
‘Celebrating life goes much further than just festive moments for me. It means embracing every aspect of life: the joy and vulnerability, the lightness and depth. It's the art of being present. Sometimes celebrating life can be found in pure exuberance, at other times in tranquillity, in a look, in the recognition of a connection. You can celebrate life in a lighthearted way and at the same time
experience happiness at a deeper level. As above, so below. The love I feel for Bobby Lou and the small circle of wonderful people around me gives me intense pleasure. It's a benevolent, satisfied feeling and the basis for my existence and the work I make.’
4. HOW DO YOU INSPIRE OTHERS TO CELEBRATE LIFE THROUGH YOUR WORK?
‘To me, painting is another way of capturing the beauty of the moment and reminding people how precious life is. When someone looking at my work connects with their inner child, that means I've got my message across. think this world is far too cruel and too dark, and that's why I create the upbeat work that I do. I recently came across a lovely phrase that felt a special connection to: “an artist is an artist because he is not happy with the world, so he creates his own existence.” believe this applies to me and certainly to my more recent work. I use colour, light and movement to evoke a sense of joy, wonder or peace. Emotions that help us to consider what really matters. Each painting tells its own story, and I don't want to impose my idea of what someone should see in it. That's the great thing about art. Everyone looks at things differently and comes up with a different story.
It's all good. If my art can help someone to stop and think for a moment and evoke a good feeling, then I've achieved my goal.’
‘Colour and art are the language of emotions for me. Bright, warm colours, such as yellow, orange and pink, evoke energy and joy, while soft blue hues and round, flowing shapes bring a sense of peace and harmony. deliberately play around with contrasts and dynamics to capture life in all its many facets. In an inspiring session with Wouter Verkerk, they delved deeper into hospitality and leadership in the hospitality industry, closing with a HACCP presentation by Bureau de Wit. Aside from fresh insights, the main takeaway from these days was valuable connections. By getting to know each other better, we lower the threshold for sparring together and standing stronger as a team. After all: sharing the problem is half the solution!

HOW DID YOU START YOUR CAREER AT WESTCORD?
‘My wife regularly reads the paper and sixteen years ago she saw an appeal from ss Rotterdam by WestCord. They were looking for new ship hosts, and she immediately signed me up. I was fine with that because I'd just retired after a long and busy career in which I'd always been around lots of people. This work means I'm still surrounded by people; I take two to three tours a day. It's varied work as each group and tour is different.’
WHAT MAKES SS ROTTERDAM BY WESTCORD SO UNIQUE FOR YOU?
‘It's an old ship, a beautiful design, and it has a story. I'm originally from Rotterdam and I've lived in the centre for many years. Every time I crossed Coolsingel and Schiedamsedijk, I saw the beautiful Holland America Line ships there, like ss Rotterdam.’
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORK IN THREE WORDS?
‘Fun, interesting and always new. I always enjoy showing the engine room as it's such a fascinating place. It's particularly special for anyone in shipping because there's so much to say about it.’
THE THEME OF THIS EDITION IS 'CELEBRATE LIFE'. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU?
‘A lot. I'm 85 now and when was younger, I was a keen hockey player. Now I'm older, only four of my former teammates are still alive, while there used to be sixteen of us. That gets you thinking. I'm happy that I'm in good shape and get along fine, so I'm

WHAT MAKES YOU GENUINELY HAPPY?
‘I cycle and walk a lot, and I love going to the beach and travelling abroad. When I'm abroad I feel that bit more “away”. It doesn't always need to be that far; I think Antwerp is far enough. I love it here and like to drink a beer on the terrace.’
‘In the Queen's Lounge, several lamps hang from the ceiling, and they are placed rather haphazardly, but there's a meaning behind this. If you lie on the floor and look up at the ceiling, you can see that they're all star signs. A while back was giving a tour to a group of sixteen ladies. It was a Friday evening, and they'd all had a drink, so the atmosphere was quite merry. When I arrived in the lounge with these ladies, they all lay down on the floor. You can just imagine it: sixteen ladies on the floor, on a Friday evening – that was a hilarious situation. The manager came in just at that moment and asked: “What on earth are you doing?” To which replied that all I'd done was to tell them the story of the lamps. It was hilarious.’
‘I always try to vary the stories I tell during my tour. That's not only better for me, but also for those people who come for the second or third time. Apart from that, I always try to be cheerful and say hello to everyone when I come in. Greeting someone can mean so much to people.’
HOW DID YOU START YOUR CAREER AT WESTCORD?
‘I was looking for a part-time job in hospitality when a friend heard about Hotel Jakarta. She knew a friend of a friend who worked here. They were so enthusiastic about the hotel that it also appealed to me. That's how I ended up here. It's my first hospitality job and I really enjoy it. I work in Café Jakarta, where I work on the breakfast buffet in the mornings – that means getting up very early – and then on lunch. You can also dine here in the evenings, but I've not worked that shift yet.’
WHAT MAKES HOTEL JAKARTA SO UNIQUE FOR YOU?
‘The wonderful atmosphere, the friendly guests and the building. The building is unique and green; you don't often find that kind of place.’
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORK IN THREE WORDS?
‘Enjoyable, sociable and varied. Each guest has a different story. I always try to chat to them; that makes the job more personal to me. And sometimes it's very busy, while at others it's quieter, enabling you to get on with other things. No two days are the same!’

‘To me, celebrating life means: enjoying life, making wonderful memories and spending lots
of time with friends and family. With friends, for example, I go shopping, to the cinema or to a café terrace to enjoy the weather. With family, I love all of us being together and having dinner together. They live all over the country, so it's great fun when we all get together.’
‘When I'm with my friends and family or practising sport. I do taekwondo and dance. I've been doing taekwondo for eight years, twice a week, and dance for the past seven years. From street dance and afro to hip-hop. I do all this together with my friends, so that makes it even more fun of course.’
WHAT'S YOUR BEST WORK-RELATED ANECDOTE?
‘On my first working day here, two really lovely people came for lunch. I had a great conversation with them. When they paid the bill via a colleague, they wrote on the receipt that they thought I was sweet and lovely and that I had done my job well. I thought that was absolutely brilliant!’
HOW DO YOU ENSURE THAT EVERY (WORKING) DAY IS FUN?
‘Every day is different, but what I like best is talking to people. Just having a quick chat and asking questions like: how are you, what are you doing here and what I can do for you today? I also enjoy getting to know all my colleagues because you are of course doing the job together. The social aspect of this job, the contact with people, I really love that. I'd like to do a lot more with that.’

Georgette and Titus Tiel Groenestege: ‘As soon as I walk into the hotel, I can smell it. That familiar scent of Hotel New York: fruits de mer. I can already hear my son and husband conferring: “Will we go for the larger platter this year? With lobster?” Staying in Hotel New York during the Christmas holidays with our children has become a tradition. It feels like coming home, the atmosphere here is so cosy and intimate.
Another thing I really love about it, something that always stays with me, is the wide variety of guests here. From grandmas to yuppies and from denim jeans to ball gowns. You see it all here. We were one of the first guests. I've witnessed so many wonderful things here. For example, I

spent a weekend here with my daughter. It was “children's weekend” and so she could decide what she wanted to do. The Frisian Wempe family has celebrated Easter on Vlieland for many generations. The tradition started back in 1945 when Cobie Wempe first visited the island with her parents. She now takes her whole family to her beloved island every year.
‘MY FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH VLIELAND WAS IN 1945’
Cobie Wempe: ‘My first experience of Vlieland was back in 1945. I stayed with my parents at Hotel De Wadden, which at that time wasn't yet owned by WestCord Hotels. Since then, I've come back to Vlieland every year. I think it's so beautiful here. We now go to the island with the whole family for the Easter holidays. Then we all stay in Strandhotel Seeduyn. With the children, grandchildren, partners and great-grandchildren. It's become a proper tradition.

It's a small island where everyone knows everyone else, such a friendly place. You can do all kinds of things here too: go to the beach, into the dunes and woods, eat together, swim and much, much more. For me it's the ideal trip as we live in Leeuwarden and so the island isn't that far for us. We just get in the car and then catch the ferry. I can still remember, years ago with my parents, having to change to a different boat on the Wadden Sea that brought us to the island. There wasn't a ferry back then! If I go to the island with a friend, I usually stay in Hotel de Wadden. Then you're close to all the shops and restaurants, and I love that. We can have fun shopping!
Each year we are here, we make some wonderful memories. We have such fun with each other, there are no arguments, and we help each other out when necessary. That's something I value enormously. My daughter died two years ago. We scattered her ashes here as a family. It was a sad time, naturally, but I'm very glad we were able to do it here. It's much busier on Vlieland than it used to be and quite a lot has changed and been modernised. Yet it makes no difference to us, as long as we're together. The holiday starts once we're on the ferry, where we drink coffee and eat buns filled with pastry cream. Vlieland feels like coming home to us. We know the people here and they know us. And there's something to do for all ages. find it very relaxing.’

But what goes with a classic cocktail like the Porn Star Martini? He's happy to help: ‘Passionfruit and white chocolate are the perfect match. Perhaps a dessert with white chocolate, such as a white chocolate panna cotta. But oysters? That's a real no-no!’
