Laundry Room Makeover Bold Blues and Stylish Details

When West + Main agent Steph Christianson set out to remodel her laundry room, she didn’t just settle for a functional space—she turned it into a bold, eye-catching extension of her home’s personality. Inspired by the dark blue cabinetry in her adjacent kitchen, Steph brought the same pop of color into her laundry room, adding depth and drama to a space ofen overlooked. She invested about $10,000 to achieve the look, including new cabinets, countertops, a farmhouse sink, fresh tile, and a new light xture.

The standout feature? The stunning patterned tile she chose from The Tile Shop. “It was denitely a splurge, but totally worth it,” Steph says. “That tile gave the room a whole new personality.”

Steph’s design process started with sketches on graph paper, which she took to her favorite local cabinet company for conversion into CAD drawings. “I made a few tweaks with their help, but the nal result turned out exactly as I’d planned,” she shares. The new layout, combined with the height and color of the cabinets, brings a dramatic, moody vibe to the small space.

What started as a laundry room makeover led to some unexpected surprises—like a mini garage revamp! “I knew I’d reuse my old laundry cabinets in the garage, but adding a shiplap feature wall and butcher block workbench were last-minute decisions,” she says. “And I’m so glad I did! Who knew a garage could be such a fun design space?”

For those considering a remodel, Steph’s biggest piece of advice is to start with inspiration. “Make a mood board on Pinterest or Canva, and start narrowing down your favorite designs,” she suggests. “And be open to DIY projects or nding afordable dupes to stretch your budget.”

With the laundry room complete, Steph is already diving into her next project—a full basement remodel with some budget-savvy tricks up her sleeve. For her, it’s all about creating spaces that feel personal, stylish, and fun.

From Vintage Vibe to Inspired Design

When West + Main Agent Jessie Matteson and her family bought their of-market home two years ago, they saw potential where others might have seen only orange shag carpeting, outdated windows, and mechanicals begging for an upgrade. But instead of being overwhelmed, Jesse and her family dove headrst into what would become a major labor of love.

“We fell in love with the vision of what the space could be,”

says Jesse, who didn't shy away from doing much of the work herself. In fact, the family tackled the entire demo by hand. With the help of her handy father-in-law and dad, the Mattesons opened up the main level, knocking down walls to create a kitchen and dining area perfect for entertaining.

JESSIE MATTESON

“We wanted a space that felt warm and inviting,” Jessie explains. “We went big with the kitchen island to make it a spot for friends and family to gather. It’s the main hangout spot in our home, so we made sure it was both pretty and practical.” The kitchen, with its massive island, quickly became the heart of the house. “We spend a lot of time around that island, whether it's hosting, working from home, or just living life.”

One of Jessie’s favorite features is the ooring, which was lovingly laid by her husband. “It adds such a cozy feel to the whole house,” she says, reecting on the warmth and comfort it brings to the space.

The remodel also boasts a custom railing, adding a playful transition from the kitchen to the lower-level living room. And though the basement still awaits its full makeover, Jessie says, “The main oor is mostly nished, and it feels so good to see our hard work nally pay of.”

Remarkably, the family didn’t work with an architect or designer for the project. Instead, inspiration came from nearby neighbors who had tackled similar renovations.

“Once we saw that what we were thinking was possible, I started designing the kitchen layout myself,” Jessie explains.

As foster parents, they wanted exible, cozy spaces that could evolve with each child. “We used furniture that was my grandmother’s and some renished pieces my mom redid. A mix of new and old makes a space feel cozy and lived in.”

Renovations, of course, come with their share of challenges. But for Jessie, the highlight was working alongside her dad and father-in-law. “It’s the third home renovation we’ve done, and I love the extra time I get to spend with them. There’s a lot of problem-solving and brainstorming – it’s always fun, though sometimes stressful!”

As for advice for others thinking of doing their own remodel? “Things won’t always go as planned, and that’s okay. For design, don’t overthink it. Ofen, the rst thing that catches your eye is what you’ll come back to. And know your limits—it’s important to hire out when you need to.”

For Jessie, the remodel has been more than just an aesthetic transformation. “This house has been a real labor of love,” she says. And with the warmth and care woven into every detail, it’s easy to see why.

Chic & Functional Home Gym Goals

WEBSITE: HEADSTANDSANDHEELS.COM

INSTA: @HEADSTANDSANDHEELS

For W+M agent, Kate Kazell’s client, Melanie Phillips, tness has been more than just a passion- it’s a lifestyle. Known for her blog, @headstandsandheels, Melanie shares, “Fitness has been a huge part of my life for the past decade, and the way I’ve worked out has evolved. Afer moving across the country to Denver, my husband and I nally had the room to create our own home gym.”

The couple transformed an alcove in their nished basement into a stylish yet functional workout space.

“We wanted the gym to be chic but also practical. We added brick wallpaper on the main wall, a large mirror, shelving for storage, fun neon lighting, and foam oor tiles.” The layout has four workout zones: oor exercises (yoga, Pilates), weightlifing, and two types of cardio with a Peloton bike and treadmill.

The key to their home gym’s success is organization. “Once everything has a home, it makes the space functional for a variety of workouts.” Melanie advises starting with basics like dumbbells, a yoga mat, a mirror, and a bench, adding more equipment over time

With colder months ahead, the home gym becomes an even more essential part of Melanie’s routine. “We use our home gym most in winter. When it’s too cold to go outside, it’s great to have a space to work out at home.”

As someone who gets bored with the same routine, she keeps things interesting by alternating between online classes including, Sculpt Society, Form, and Peloton. The exibility to switch between spin, strength training, and low-impact workouts has been especially important during her pregnancy.

Melanie's home gym reects her tness journey and lifestyle, ofering the perfect space to sweat, stretch, and stay motivated.

Mid-Century Gem with Modern Touches

Afer nearly 30 years, W+M agent Pam Catania’s clients decided it was time to give their beloved home a fresh look before putting it on the market. Their impeccable taste— rened over decades—leans towards classic mid-century design, perfectly complementing the home’s original architecture.

When they rst bought the property, it had a heavy southwestern inuence, with pinks, oranges, and adobe accents throughout. To modernize the space, they painted the walls white and added sleek black xtures, toning down the bold color palette while leaving the striking adobe replace and agstone oors intact. The wooden beams which span the ceiling were also preserved, maintaining the home’s character. The master bath saw a big transformation, moving from 1980's pink and teal to a more modern aesthetic.

Pam suggested these updates to appeal to today’s buyers, and within a few months, the home was ready to shine. The

layout features the primary bedroom on one side of the house, with secondary bedrooms thoughtfully placed on the other, providing both privacy and functionality.

As owners of a custom cabinetry and countertop business, the couple’s attention to detail is evident throughout, with handcrafed cabinetry and woodwork adding a personal touch throughout the home.

The property also includes a charming ADU that’s been part of the home from the start.

Situated in a coveted neighborhood that is known for its custom-built homes on spacious lots, this 3,200 sqf gem ofers the perfect blend of mid-century charm and modern updates—all on one oor.

"They painted the walls white (they were pinks and oranges), put in black fi xtures, and subtled down the southwestern to sell it."

Meet theMaker

JOSH COULAS

W+M: We absolutely love your work! Tell us, how did you get started with model creation?

Josh: Thank you! We love to hear that, it’s what motivates us to do great work. I started in this industry 19 years ago as a walk-on, purely by luck. I had recently completed my degree in a challenging job market and Peter, now my business partner, hired me of the street when I happened to be passing by the studio and poked my head in when I saw the sign on the door. At that point I didn’t know there was this incredible, niche industry with its wonderful challenges, culture and craf.

W+M: When you are working, do you take inspiration from the existing surroundings of the project?

Josh: This is a great question because it cuts right to the heart of what the best creatives do—and what we strive to do all the time in our practice: great modelmaking is a delicate balance between being obsessively accurate and literal with details, and interpreting the design intent of the architect and design team. The latter involves stepping back and looking through a wider lens, seeing what informs the design and how it can best be expressed in the model we’re crafing. It’s a constant exercise of nding the right balance between objective and subjective representation.

W+M: Working in 3D seems like such a unique skill...how do your clients find you?

Josh: We’re fortunate to have built much of our client base through word of mouth and reputation. We’re very service-forward, meaning we look to impress the teams we work with at every turn. We know if we can make our clients’ lives easier then its one less item to worry about amongst a litany of moving parts that form a project launch. That approach has led to a lot of return work and growth as the diaspora of people we’ve worked with grows, culminating in an international practice with work delivered all over America and overseas to places like Dubai, Istanbul, Hong Kong, Ukraine, France, and elsewhere.

W+M: When you were younger were you a huge lego fan? Obsessed with Lincoln logs? Into model cars?

Josh: I love this question and I laugh every time I get it. Yes, I certainly was a huge Lego fan as a child, as I’m sure you were as well! I grew up with a lot of tools and a full woodshop at my disposal. Perhaps not the safest playground as a child but it meant I learned to craf things and leverage the use of good tools at a young age. Today I employ that skill with how we marry the use of modern technologies with traditional crafsmanship – long our hallmark – and use unique materials to make better models.

W+M: Models like the one for Upton Residences are hard wired to show different floor plans, unit type and what a real building would look like at night. Can you tell us more about this technology?

Josh: We’ve been building models with these functions for over 20 years and we’ve become really adept at tuning this technology to enhance the quality and feel of a project, as well as using it as a functional tool to highlight individual units or blocks of unit types. Wiring 600 or more individual units to be individually addressable is a unique challenge and we’ve obsessed over developing a wiring method that is minimal and reliable since we can’t always easily access the wiring, or even the model itself, when it’s halfway around the world. We build this component in concert with the rest of our model building to save time, but the trick is that you don’t know how or where the wiring is. If you can’t see it then the model feels magical and alive—we strive for that kind of mystique because we want to immerse you in the experience of the building rather than being fully aware of the parts that make it a model.

W+M: How many hours did the Upton model take?

Josh: If you can believe it, Upton took nearly 2,000 hours to produce, with about 9-10 of our very talented modelmakers, designers and technicians responsible for various aspects of the model production.

W+M: Can you share with us any projects you're working on now?

Josh: We’re ofen brought on to projects very early, before marketing is public, so we have to be careful about disclosing future work but of course we remain busy in Toronto and we have projects this year in New York, Miami, Seattle and…yes, Denver too.

W+M: Anything else you'd like to tell us about model making?

Josh: It’s an amazing craf with amazing people pouring their heart and soul into building models for the love of storytelling and bringing buildings to life before they’re real. We hope that passion is felt when people walk up to one.

A REMODEL THAT BROUGHT IT ALL TOGETHER. THE ORTEGA’S REMODEL

When W+M agent Mic Ortega and his wife, designer and owner of Sarah O. Jewelry, Sarah bought their home seven years ago, it wasn’t exactly love at rst sight—at least not with the house. “We fell in love with the lot,” Mic says, “and we always had visions of building our dream home on it.” Fast-forward to today, and that vision has come to life in the form of a stunning remodel, complete with a new kitchen, living room, two patios, an updated oce, and more.

The remodel wasn’t just a quick weekend project. “From start to nish, it took almost three years,” Mic explains, “including working with our architect, Mark FitzWilliams, to perfect the plans, waiting on permits, and construction time. We were out of the house for 16 months.” But the end result was worth the wait—especially since it meant they didn’t have to worry about more updates down the road. “We gured while we were out, we might as well go all out and get everything we always wanted, so we wouldn’t have to go through another project again in a few years.”

A big part of the remodel was focused on making the most of their beautiful backyard.

“We love our backyard and the giant cottonwood trees, so we wanted to make them a focal point.”

The solution? Large windows and plenty of natural light, along with not one but two patios: one covered and heated for all-weather comfort, and one open-air space for perfect summer nights.

It’s clear the outdoor spaces are a highlight for Mic and his family, but the interior got some serious upgrades too. “The kitchen has been a dream come true,” he says, “and with kids, staying organized with the mudroom has been a game changer.” But perhaps the most versatile feature is the way the kitchen and living room seamlessly connect to the patio through sliding doors. “We love opening everything up, especially during parties. It really brings the outside in.”

Of course, any major remodel comes with its surprises. For Mic and Sarah, that surprise was discovering that part of the house had no foundation...

“We had to tear that part down and start from scratch, but in the end, it worked out. We sleep better knowing the house isn’t going to fall down anytime soon,” he jokes.

As for the oce, the transformation has made working from home a whole lot easier. “Having a dedicated oce space that isn’t shared with kids’ toys or a guest room has been a total game changer,” Mic says.

One standout piece is the custom chandelier in the dining room, crafed by local artist Fenway Clayworks. “We’re especially excited about the chandelier,” Mic shares. “It’s the kind of detail that makes the space feel really special."

When it came to design choices, the couple was inspired by a mix of places close to home and far away. “We love the Texas limestone look and incorporated that both inside and out, thanks to inspiration from some close friends. We also wanted to bring in aspects of New Mexico, where we’re both from, through textiles and colors,” Mic explains. A local interior designer, Kelly Christensen, helped pull it all together, ensuring a cohesive look throughout the home.

Their advice for anyone considering a remodel? “Take your time,” Mic says. “We lived in the house for ve years before remodeling, and we’re glad we did. It gave us time to really understand what we wanted.” And don’t underestimate the value of a great contractor. “Our contractor, Seth Dineen, made the whole process fun, which is not something we expected!”

So, what’s next? “We’d like to say we’re done,” Mic admits with a smile, “but we still have an old barn out back that could use some attention.” Afer all, for true home renovators, the next project is always just around the corner.

RACHEL OGBURN

OWNER + PRINCIPAL DESIGNER

ROWE INTERIOR DESIGN

1. Relaxed + Comfortable Furniture:

We are going to see a resurgence in the importance of comfortability, without giving up any style. The trend will lean towards casually cozy furniture, with designs that are both inviting and functional coming to the forefront. Look for: Soft, Plush Upholstery + Relaxed Aesthetics

2. Textured Elements:

We’ve seen this trend throughout 2023 and 2024, but we have no reason to see it slow down this coming year. Designs will continue to embrace texture in interior spaces that add depth and character. This trend includes: Textured Finishes, Wallpaper, Ceiling Treatments

3. Personalized Spaces:

We are seeing a demand for spaces to feel more personal, in the sense that clients feel connected to the furniture and artwork in their home. This focus on individuality will lead to more eclectic and personal environments. You’ll see these trends pop up in 2025: Art and Decor, Color Choices, Eclectic Aesthetic 1 2 3

Trends

As we approach 2025, the world of interior design is poised to embrace a harmonious blend of style, function, and bold aesthetics. Whether you’re dreaming up a cozy corner or planning for a full home renovation, here are the trends we see making a huge impact in 2025:

4. Nature Inspired Design:

Gone are the days of specifying finishes and textiles that look pretty but won’t hold up. Clients see the value in spending a little bit more on materials that are proven to last through generations. This is going to pop up in places like: Hardware, Upholstery, Cabinetry, Hardwood Floor 4 5

This trend goes beyond merely adding plants to a space; it's about creating environments that promote a sense of well-being. Expect to see features such as: Natural Light Optimization, Organic Materials, Nature-Inspired Color Palettes 5. Materials Made to Last:

Blending Styles, Building Memories

When Rachel Ogburn, owner and principal designer at Rowe Interior Design, teamed up with her clients, she thought they were simply tackling new oors and a splash of paint. Little did she know, this project would evolve into a complete home transformation that beautifully blended two unique styles.

"It all started small," Rachel says with a laugh. "But once we began making changes, the homeowners— Pat and Richard—saw how it was elevating the space, and it just grew from there." Before long, this modest refresh turned into a dynamic redesign of the kitchen, dining room, and more, turning Richard's longtime

home into a shared space that reected both of their personalities.

Pat, an artist with a keen eye for color, fell in love with the bold green backsplash in the kitchen. "I knew she’d love it the moment I saw it!" Rachel says. The richly textured zellige tile not only added character but also tied in perfectly with the sentimental countertops that Richard was attached to. It was all about nding that sweet spot between modernizing the space while honoring Richard's connection to certain elements.

"We didn’t want to change the countertops, but the backsplash made them feel like they belonged"

One of the boldest moves? The dramatic makeover of the dining room. "We painted it a deep, rich aubergine, and Pat was so excited she called it her 'jewel box'," Rachel says. Even the ceiling got the royal treatment, adding to the vibrant, luxe vibe of the room.

Aubergine

A Home Transformed for Two

The oors were another key feature in the transformation. Originally a shiny yellow oak that gave of a bit of a "basketball court vibe," as Rachel describes, they were renished to a warm walnut tone. "It instantly made the space feel cozy and inviting while still being polished and timeless," she notes.

Interestingly, the replace—a key feature in the living room— was lef largely untouched. Rachel recounts, “We didn’t actually do anything to the replace itself, other than painting the rebox black. Once everything else in the room was modernized, the replace just felt like it belonged.”

Rachel’s favorite part of the project? “Denitely the backsplash—it tied the kitchen together so beautifully. But I also love the custom steel range hood we installed. We replaced the drywall range hood with a steel one nished in this gorgeous gunmetal champagne color. It’s actually an automotive paint, and it adds a unique, metallic warmth to the space.”

PHOTOGRAPHY BY RANDY
LAND, RLAND CREATIVE, LLC

Though the project came with challenges— namely blending two distinct tastes and creating a home that felt both modern and familiar— it was ultimately a success. "It was all about making it their home," Rachel says. "Richard had lived there for 20 years, but now it feels like a place they both share and love."

In the end, what started as a small renovation blossomed into a full-scale redesign, blending warmth, sentiment, and bold design choices into a home that’s as full of character as its owners.

Spa-InspiredBathroom Remodel

When West + Main agent Julie Lunn and her husband, contractor Eric Kottke, decided to remodel their outdated 1980's bathroom, they knew they wanted a space that was both calming and functional. “We wanted the new primary bathroom to be really soothing and spa-like, neutral and natural,” Julie explains. The couple blended white oak and soapstone with earthy tiles to create a serene, upscale space.

One of the biggest challenges? Making time for their own project. “Finding time on the schedule and making our own decisions was a big step,” Julie shares.

Afer three years of living with a carpeted bathroom, they were more than ready for the change. While the layout mostly stayed the same to keep costs down, they did separate the vanities and centered the tub under the window.

A key decision was choosing an undermount tub. “Freestanding tubs are popular, but they ofen feel stufed into a corner,” Julie says. The couple sofened the look with a curved tub corner, creating a seamless ow for the textured tile. The mix of brushed nickel and black metals added a calming yet contemporary feel, with green matte tiles providing a natural accent.

Julie’s favorite features? “Getting rid of carpet is a huge plus! And we love the steam shower afer a long hike or day on the slopes,” she notes. Thoughtful details, like dimmable lighting and carefully planned tile placement, ensure the space is as functional as it is beautiful. “You have to have a really good plan before you start,” Julie says. “The planning makes the beauty of the materials feel efortless.

Creating a Custom Sauna

West + Main Agent Caitlin Carow's clients were inspired by the cardiovascular benefits of Finnish saunas. Ellen and James converted an unused corner of their basement into a fully custom-built sauna, perfect for year-round use. Drawing from industrial-style saunas and detailed guides like Trumpkin's Notes on Building a Sauna, James focused on airflow, using hidden duct fans, and selected clear vertical grain cedar wood sourced from Rocky Mountain Forest products for its durability. The standout feature of this project is the oating benches, which gracefully span the room without visible supports, creating a sleek and uninterrupted aesthetic. Though James faced challenges—like drilling through oor joists for ventilation and upgrading electrical panels—the project was a rewarding DIY experience. His advice to others? Take your time with planning, budgeting, and deciding on the type of sauna that ts your needs.
