WANDERERS CC V FLAMING SLIPS CC, 8 DECEMBER

On Friday the Wanderers played the inaugural game against Robbie Mercer's Flaming Slips selection at Kelburn Park The Flaming Slips have several current or recent employees of Cricket Wellington in their squad, including current Director of Cricket Bruce Edgar The Wanderers partnership with Cricket Wellington has been a huge success for our club, enabling us to provide more reach in supporting youth cricket, so getting this fixture up and running has been a great addition to the WWCC calendar

For both teams, this was the first chance to pull the whites on this summer, so there was a lot of excitement, with some decent cricket along the way, especially an outstanding grab at cover by Andrew Fullerton-Smith Post game the Flaming Slips put on a great BBQ, and both teams would like to thank Barratt Mexted and the Victoria University CC for hosting us A huge thank you also to Robbie Mercer and the Flaming Slips from the WWCC for initiating this match up, and we look forward to doing this all again in 2024

WWCC 170 in 29 overs (Hamish Marshall 37, Stephen Mather 24, Nick Whittington 23, Andrew Fullerton-Smith 23) beat the Flaming Slips 111 in 28 4 overs (Hamish Marshall 2-7, Kurt Kerrison 2-10) by 59 runs

WANDERERS CC V PALMERSTON NORTH BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL, 7 DECEMBER

On Thursday WWCC travelled to rekindle an old relationship with Palmerston North Boys High School This was traditionally a fixture that was always part of the famous Wanderers tours back in the 80s and 90s, so we’re thrilled to be back playing a school that shares a history with the Wanderers.

Hamish Marshall captained a very strong side, which needed to be as PNBHS are the Central Districts 1st XI champions, so this was always going to be one of the toughest games of the summer. The team consisted of two former NZ players including Jamie How (PNBHS old boy), several current young Wellington, and current older Wellington representative players, plus a few old boys of the school

Batting first in the 40 over per side contest, on an incredibly slow track which was hard to bat on, the Wanderers only managed 167 for 6. This was going to be a tough chase for the PNBHS lads, who ultimately fell short in the end against a strong bowling attack. The game though was played in great spirits, and WWCC were superbly hosted by the school, and we thank them for this. To Richard Calkin, WWCC member, current Wellington over 60s representative, and old boy of PNBHS, thank you for reinstating this wonderful fixture to our summer calendar

Wanderers won by 90 runs Wanderers 167 for 6 off 40 overs PNBHS 77 all out Hamish Marshall top scored with 35 not out, with contributions in the 20s from Andrew Murley, Brett Davies (both PNBHS old boys) and Tim O'Leary from Whanganui Collegiate.

Our young Wellington seam bowling quartet of Aiden and Lachie Bailey, Jakob Vandenberg and Jack Gaskin all bowled very well, but it was Central Districts Over 50s bowler and PNBHS old boy Robbie Laird who returned the best figures with 3 for 9 off 8 overs A solid bowling performance from PNBHS with skipper Ollie Murray's offspin the pick of the attack, taking 2 for 14 off 6 overs

Thank you to Grant McQueen-Davies of PNBHS for his help in organising the fixture.

St Pats Town old boys returned to their old stomping ground, six of them taking on their old school in a friendly yet competitive spirit The event was seamlessly organised thanks to Marina Scoble, the St Pats team manager, whose efforts ensured a memorable day for all involved The camaraderie and sportsmanship were the true winners, as the Wanderers clinched the game Here's to more such thrilling matches in the future!

WANDERERS CC V NZ ARMY CC, 7 JANUARY

What a day for cricket! On Sunday 7 January, our very own Wanderers CC took on the NZ Army at the Cello Basin Reserve under magical conditions Wanderers won the toss, opting to bat first and what a spectacle it was The lads, all 24 of them, were beaming with massive smiles as they took to the field A solid start saw Wanderers at 55/0 after 7 overs, with Greg Stretch and Martin Pike forming a formidable partnership Stretch dazzled with a swift 50 before retiring not out, and Pikelet put up a steady 31 off 47

By the end of our innings, Wanderers put a challenging 278/5 on the board in 40 overs The Army, in response, chased the runs down with a nail-biting finish, securing victory with just one wicket in hand and three balls to spare Their determination was evident as three of their players hit 50s and made significant comebacks

A great game indeed, one that will be remembered for a long time by all those involved. Hats off to both teams for an unforgettable day of cricket!

WANDERERS CC YOUTH TEAM TO HAWKE’S BAY, 10-13 JANUARY

Dayonereport: Game one for the WWCC youth team in Hawkes Bay went down to the wire, such a thrilling finish but Taranaki Colts got the result in the end. Wanderers batted first on a tough track which made batting difficult, and an even slower outfield, so 156 for 8 off the allocated 40 overs was thought to be enough. Jonty Beattie lead the batting with a patient 52, playing some great shots through point, and smashing anything loose In the field we started well with Jethro Elliott bowling with some real heat, and he was well supported by James Parker with 3-17 Others contributed with the ball as the boys had Taranaki 9 down needing 2 to win which they managed to do in a real pressure situation Well done to all involved, special thanks to captain Hamish Cranstone, coach Rochie, and all our wonderful supporters.

Daytworeport: What an amazing day for the Wanderers youngsters to play against our kindred cricket friends Seddon Cricket Club, and also up for grabs was the Marshall Family cup which Seddon CC kindly donated for all fixtures between our two great cricket clubs - named after Wellington and Northern Districts representatives Hamish and James Marshall WWCC won the toss and elected to field, and the lads took their catches, threw the stumps down to create runouts, and supported each other in a massive effort out in the field to bowl Seddon out for 186. Macy Maber batted beautifully for 63* with extras being the other contributor to the Seddon total. Jonty Beattie, James Parker and Hunter Lithgow were the pick of the Wanderers bowlers. In reply the boys fought to the end, never gave up, but fell short by 25 runs. Jonty Beattie and Hunter Lithgow kept the boys in the game with a solid partnership through the middle, both batting extremely well Thank you to the supporters from both teams, and all the effort you put in to make these days special for these young cricketers

Daythreereport:Day Playing Parnell cricket club in yet another day of extremely hot conditions, which saw the WWCC youth side opting to bat first after the skipper won the toss. The boys started well before a mid innings collapse, but a great partnership between James Parker and Hunter Lithgow steadied things. Other contributions were made by Guy Ormby Jethro Elliott and Harry Johnstone to the final total 153 Pressure was needed to defend

WANDERERS CC V ST PATRICK SILVERSTREAM, 19 JANUARY

The Wanderers took on St Patrick’s College Silverstream on Friday 19 January in warm and windy conditions. After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Silverstream made a strong start getting to 119-2 after 26 overs. Towards the back of the innings some tight slower bowling built pressure and ultimately restricted Silverstream to 190/8 in their 40 overs Left-handed opener Rakith Jayakuru led the Silverstream effort with 49, supported by Max Bassett (33) and Daniel Pinchin (24) For the Wanderers Joe Atkinson, Richard Sheehan and Sam Dean each picked up two wickets Captain Zac Ringrose took four catches, including a spectacular diving effort at deep square leg to dismiss his younger cousin Tyler Duncan for 20.

In reply the Wanderers powered their way to the required total in less than 28 overs for the loss of five wickets. Silverstream old boys scored the bulk of the runs Opener Chris Tait (also a current staff member) carried his bat for 66 He was supported by some clean hitting by Flynn Ruscoe (31) and Max Griffith (46) Promising year 10 pacer Ekam Singh Dhillon took two wickets, including finding the edge of his older cousin Navroz Singh in the eighth over

The game was played in good spirit, with the prevalence of old boys, staff and family connections within the Wanderers team providing some extra material for on field banter.

The game was also the first played for the newly inaugurated Mike O’Leary Cup, kindly been donated by Nic Williams St Patricks Silverstream old boy 1991-1995, honouring Mike’s contribution to Silverstream cricket over the past 30 years

Many thanks to Silverstream for hosting us and we looking forward to doing it again next year.

On Sunday 28 January the Wanderers faced Rongotai College in another of our annual school fixtures A difficult match for the Wanderers who won toss & chose to bat in tricky conditions. Rongotai used every ounce of the home advantage & after dismissing opener Sol Barris who had just started to settle in, the Rongotai bowlers quickly turned the match on its head with Jai Tomar's 5 wicket haul a standout performance. 123 all out for the Wanderers who set about defending their total well taking an early wicket Unfortunately we couldn't take many more & Rongotai chased us down 129/2 & winning the match by 8 wickets A big thank you again to Rongotai for hosting us well & facilitating a great day out for our Wanderers team!

WANDERERS CC V WELLINGTON COLLEGE, 11 FEBRUARY 2024

Wellington Wanderers 230-7 from 40 overs (A Singh 82, W French 35) beat Wellington College 229-7 from 40 overs (J Elliott 3-45, C Lusty 2-40). At the end of a stunning Sunday afternoon, only one run separated the teams, with Man of the Match Jethro Elliott, a Wellington College Year 10 student, defending 7 of the last over to win the match and retain the RJ Moses Cup for the Wanderers The two innings played out similarly Wanderers batted first with Avi Singh and Willsy French combining for a 77 run opening partnership Avi Singh anchored the innings with a run-a-ball 82 Some handy contributions from Ari Bonar and Amogh Paranjpe, and some good death hitting from Willie Marshall saw the side through to a respectable 230 Prevailing opinion over an excellent spread at the halfway stage was that Wanderers were about par, though a few runs had been left out there given the start. That would prove correct.

Wellington College started brightly, with Sam Jones and Pranav Mehta putting on 62 for the first wicket Both were out stumped, however, in quick succession off the bowling of Connor Lusty who rolled off eight on the trot, with Willie Marshall keeping it tight at the other end Harry Law and Charlie Jackson then put on 80 for the third wicket, taking the schoolboys to within touching distance With 65 needed off the last 10 overs and 7 wickets in hand, Coll were probably ahead of the game. But some excellent bowling from Ari Bonar and Amogh Paranjpe, and clever field manipulation, meant the boundary was found too infrequently in the final ten overs. Then, coming back to bowl his last three overs at the death, Jethro Elliott took two poles and an LBW as new batters struggled to put Law, who ended up on a superb 84 at better than run-a-ball, back on strike.

Needing 2 from the last ball, Wanderers secured the match with a run out when the batsman slipped digging out Elliott’s pinpoint yorker, Jack Pettit holding his nerve to get the ball to Elliott at the bowler’s end safely

The game was played in great spirit – and was a great occasion for the old boys and father-son Wanderers members Duncan and Jethro Elliott.

WANDERERS CC V SCOTS COLLEGE GIRLS, 9 FEBRUARY 2024

Wellington Wanderers School Girls XI 113/2 from 20 overs (G Abbott 25, L Campbell 23) beat Scots College Girls XI 112/3 (N Baird 1-5, L Robinson 1-13, G Abbott 1-13)

A beautiful afternoon provided the perfect playing conditions for the inaugural Wellington Wanderers School Girls XI game against the Scots College Girls XI - it was hot, sunny and there wasn’t a breath of wind

Scots won the toss and elected to bat but it was the Wanderers that capitalised early in the second over with C Caudle taking a great catch behind the wickets off a quick delivery by G Abbott. Scots replied by setting up a 75 run partnership between N Ramanathan and A Newell. The Wanderers got their breakthrough when their spin bowler L Robinson took N Ramanathan’s wicket. The Wanderer’s then proceeded to slow the run rate by conceding only 8 runs in the following four overs, before finally setting up a total of 113 to chase down for the win

Scots started the second innings with some good tight bowling but it wasn’t until the 7th over that H Conder was able to take the first Wanderer’s wicket, bowling P Freeman cleanly Unfortunately for Scots, wickets proved difficult to get and it only took a couple of big overs to give the Wanderers a comfortable enough cushion for them to cruise home and secure the win with wickets in hand.

The game was played in great spirit by both sides, and the evening finished with sausages on the BBQ and well deserved ice-blocks Thanks to everyone who came to support the girls, Jess McFadyen and support crews from the Wanderers and Scots College And last of all, a special mention to Nicole Baird for captaining and mentoring the team on the day
