NATIONAL KINDRED CUP TOURNAMENT – TAUPŌ 23-24 FEBRUARY 2024

The Wanderers travelled north for the 2024 National Kindred Cup, held in the scenic town of Taupō. The Kindred Cup is a thrilling showcase of cricket ‘talent’ who share a love of the game and kinship, culminating in a well-deserved victory for Clifton CCC. Congratulations to them for their outstanding performance throughout the tournament. The Wanderers played three hard-fought games over the weekend. They experienced a mix of fortunes, securing one win and facing two defeats.

Game1vsQueenStreetCC-Win

The tournament started on a high note for the Wanderers, who showcased their bowling prowess by restricting Queen Street CC to 114. Jack Castle and Jason Eaton were the standout bowlers, with figures of 2-15 and 2-5 over three overs, respectively. In the chase, Duncan Elliot and Steve Mather made contributions with the bat, scoring 28 and 30, and ensuring a victory with a couple of overs to spare.

Game2vsUnitedCountry&VineyardCC-Loss

The second match proved more challenging UCVC openers amassing 115 for the first wicket in just 12 overs However, the Wanderers clawed back the momentum and restricted UCVC to 161 Despite this effort, the team struggled to keep pace with the required run rate Andrew Wilson 23, Jeremy Dean 24, and Jack Castle 33 all made valiant efforts, but ultimately, the team fell short, ending with 122

Game3vsWillowsCC-Loss

In their final game, Wanderers faced the formidable Willows Despite a commendable bowling effort from Andrew Fullerton-Smith, who conceded only 12 runs across four overs of beautiful left arm swing bowling, the team could not contain Jimad Khan from the Willows, who scored an explosive 70 Chasing a daunting 170, the Wanderers were outmatched and unable to mount sufficient pressure, concluding their tournament

The Wanderers and all participating teams extend their heartfelt thanks to Kent Currie, whose dedication and hard work are instrumental in the success of the National Kindred Cup, now featuring 12 teams His efforts in organising and facilitating this event have not gone unnoticed and are greatly appreciated by all involved As we reflect on this year's tournament, we celebrate the spirit of cricket and the community it fosters, already looking forward to next year's competition with great anticipation.

WANDERERS CC V PARAPARAUMU COLLEGE 10 MARCH 2024

The inaugural Pritchard-Meiring Cup T20 game between the Wanderers CC and the Paraparaumu College Boys' 1st XI took place on Sunday 10 March Nine of the Wanderers playing XI were former students of Paraparaumu College, several of whom feature prominently on the College's cricket honours board

With the sprinklers accidentally being left on the Paraparaumu College #1 wicket overnight, the game was transferred to the picturesque adjacent and smaller oval Wanderers skipper, Matt Fowler, won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that had variable bounce and prodigious turn Despite the regular loss of wickets, the Wanderers maintained a healthy run-rate, largely thanks to the big hitting of Jono Griffith who finished with 53 Other contributions of note came from Matt Fowler (27) and James Logan (22) The Wanderers were bowled out in the 20th and final over for 162

Despite the short boundaries, this was always going to be a challenging total for Paraparaumu College to chase on a deteriorating pitch With wickets again falling regularly, the local team was bowled out for 107 in the 19th over Kieran Scarrett, was the pick of the Wanderers bowlers, finishing with 3-7

All of the Wanderers players were extremely grateful for the opportunity to represent the club and (for most) return to their school to play against current students It was a terrific day of nostalgia, re-connection and fun Long-time Paraparaumu College cricket volunteer and staff member, Brent Adams, who coached most of the Wanderers players while they were at school, scored the game. Wanderers Match Manager and former Paraparaumu College Principal, Gregor Fountain, joined Horowhenua-Kāpiti Umpire, David Blythe in officiating the game. The wider Paraparaumu College cricket community were very generous and welcoming hosts throughout the day.

So, the Pritchard-Meiring Cup has been won by the Wanderers, but more importantly, the connection between the Wanderers and Paraparaumu College cricket has been enhanced. We look forward to playing for the Pritchard-Meiring Cup again next year and supporting the cricketers of Paraparaumu College in a variety of ways in the future.

WANDERERS CC V HUTT VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL DOUBLE HEADER 13 MARCH 2024

HuttValley1stXIWomen79/8losttotheWellingtonWanderer’sSchoolGirlsXI80/2

Despite initial doubts about whether the game would go ahead because of forecasted heavy showers, we were lucky to dodge the rain and play in breezy overcast conditions

The Wanderers won the toss and elected to bowl, which proved to be a winning strategy. All of the players bowled well and effectively as a unit. Wickets were taken at regular intervals which kept the pressure on the HVHS batters Best bowling figures went to Ashleigh Manks (two overs, one maiden, two runs, one wicket) and Ruby Conway (two overs, two runs, one wicket), with Emma Ward, Leilani Williams, Charlotte Ryan and Arna Dixit all taking a wicket each

Although HVHS was a team made up of mostly young year 9 players, they were not to be underestimated. The HVHS opening bowlers Amelia Ferguson, Olivia Turner and Sasha James all had an economy of just 3 runs an over each and the fielders showed real determination to try and not let anything slip past them. Unfortunately, their low score ultimately proved too hard to defend. Kasey McCully retired on 37* runs and Arna Dixit retired on 19*

Thankyou to HVHS for the great spirit in which the game was played - we know you will be an absolute force to be reckoned with in the next few years and look forward to seeing your development next year! A massive thank you to the HVHS staff, coaches, supporters, scorers and umpires who helped us out. We can’t play these games without you.

HuttValley1stXIBoys140/7losttotheWellingtonWanderer’sXI150by10runs.

Top three moments from the match included the reunion of former players after 20 years, Darren Cudby's consistent performance behind the stumps, and Richard Chatfield's impressive batting display, scoring 41 runs despite not having played cricket in over 12 years. Tom Robertson was also outstanding scoring an unbeaten 55 runs.

Overall, the match was a fantastic occasion, with the reunion of old teammates adding to the enjoyment both on and off the field Anticipation is already building for next year's fixture, and sincere thanks were extended to everyone involved for making it such a memorable event

Wanderers264/10(33.5overs)vsHIBS265/4(37overs)lossby6wickets

The Wanderers headed out to HIBS for a beautiful end of summers day, we had a last minute scramble to finalise the playing XI The Wanderers batted first and the innings was held together superbly by Jack Gaskin (129no), wickets fell regularly through our innings but we posted what we thought would be a par score on the quick outfield

Ollie Saunderson from HIBS did most of the damage taking 5/26 In reply, HIBS put together a well timed chase, knocking off the runs in 37 overs, the unbroken 5th wicket partnership of 140 between Fin Hourigan (100no) and Vraj Patel (54no) proving the difference

A very enjoyable day had by all involved Wanderers President Willie Marshall in his mid game speech extended Wanderers support to Paul Brennan and the HIBS First XI to help them with their Gillette Cup campaign later in the year

WANDERERS CC V WILLOWS CC SCHOOLBOYS 26 MARCH 2024

On Tuesday 26th of March, the Wanderers selected from seven different schools an XI to travel to Loburn in North Canterbury to play the annual schoolboys fixture V The Willows CC secondary school boys’ selection XI

We were welcomed by Willows Chairman Paul Rutledge, which is customary when arriving at the ground Paul is always there to ensure the day runs smoothly and it’s fair to say that Paul is the heartbeat of the Willows giving so much of his time to the operations of this wonderful cricketing paradise The boys then had a good look at the oval, and inside the pavilion which is covered with memorabilia, before the whites and spikes were on, and after a quick warm up, Paul rang the bell for play to start at 11am This was to be a time game, maximum 100 overs or 6pm, whatever came first

The Wanderers having lost the toss had first use of the ball and it was not long before HIBs new ball pairing Benny Byrne and Aiden Bailey had removed both openers, leaving the Willows 2-14 inside the first 8 overs. Wickets continued to tumble as Alex McAslan entered the attack sneering three quick wickets, and Harry Law adding another to leave the Willows lads in a deep hole, at 6-61. To the crease arrived Lloyd Fellows and big Josh Wedlake, and both started to pounce on anything full, with Wedlake prepared to take on the spinners, hitting over the 30-meter circle to pepper the boundary. This partnership and the balance of the tail got the Willows through to a respectable 163 all out.

The Wanderers openers headed to the middle with twenty minutes before the lunch break and after losing Pranav Mehta early, Tim O’Leary proceeded to swing hard, for a quick fire 24 before being out on the second to last ball prior to the interval. After losing our next wicket first ball after lunch, enter Connor Rees who with Ben Stephen started to get the innings on track, with Rees timing the ball beautifully with delicate cuts, and classy pull shots, and eloquent punches through the offside. Some middle order fireworks from McAslan, Law and Ormsby, saw the team past the 300 mark and on reaching the declaration score of 319, Connor Rees also brought up a well compiled 100 not out. This innings was not to go unnoticed by both Willows Coach David Kelly and former Central Districts representative, and John Wright former New Zealand opener, who thoroughly enjoyed a real show of class from the Whanganui Collegiate 1st XI captain.

With an hour left in the day it was simple, the Willows needed to survive to draw, or the Wanderers needed 10 good bits of cricket in a hurry Benny Byrne and Ollie Saunderson combined well to pick up three quick wickets early, as the Willows batsman had a real dip at the required runs However, as the light faded on a great day, and 6pm arrived, stumps were pulled at 75-4 A moral victory for the young Wanderers men and a fantastic way for these boys from boy teams to finish the summer Both teams must be congratulated for the spirit they played the game in, the way the came together as teams, and for the great cricket they all contributed too

The opportunity for any player to experience the Willows is one to cherish and from a Wanderers perspective we would like to sincerely thank the Dormer family, Ben and Winsome, Paul Rutledge for overseeing everything, and for being one of those absolute stars who give so much back to our game, Dave Kelly for coaching the Willows boys and everyone else including umpires and caterers for making this trip south so special A particular mention to those who travelled with the WWCC team, committee members Hamish and William Marshall, Matthew Roche and Peter Holland for their support, and Jasmine Bailey who made sure everything from flights to transfers and all communications were seamless We look forward to the return fixture in 12 months’ time where we host the Willows at the Cello Basin Reserve

The Wanderers CC acknowledge the generous support received from Grassroots Central Trust Limited and Super Shuttles - Thank you!

WANDERERS CC V TE WHANGANUI-A-TARA WAHINE XI 30 MARCH 2024

The Wanderers pulled together a Wanderers Women’s XI and a Wanderer’s Schoolgirls XI yesterday to play in two matches against the Te-Whanganui-a-Tara Māori Wahine and the Te-Whanganui-a-Tara Schoolgirls XI at the first ever Wellington Maori Cricket festival

After a welcoming powhiri, the teams were treated to hot cross buns on Waiwhetu Marae while we waited for the grass to dry and patchy rain to clear.

The Women’s game was unfortunately reduced to a 10 over match The Wanderers posted a tidy 83/10 in their 10 overs but lost to the Wahine in the last over who posted 85/3 after some impressive hitting from Nicole Baird and Caitlin King - both of Blaze fame It has to be said our young bowlers stood up to the challenge of such a high calibre opposition and loss notwithstanding can hold their heads high!

The rain cleared in the afternoon for the schoolgirls T20 - with the biggest challenge for all players being trying to play on overly full stomachs after we had been provided with a massive hangi lunch!

This time it was the Wanderer’s schoolgirls who took the win, scoring 144/4 against the Māori schoolgirls 127/5 Lily Campbell - from the Wanderers Young Cricketers Programme setting the team up with a solid 60 runs not out It was absolutely fabulous to have not only Lily playing for us, but also 5 out of 7 of our girls Academy players were there - including Ash Manks who couldn’t play because of a knee injury but was there supporting the team for the entire game.

A great day was had by all!

WANDERERS CC SCHOOLGIRL CLASH 4 APRIL 2024

Wellington Wanderer’s Blue Schoolgirls XI (200/5 after 40 overs) vs Wellington Wanderer’s White Schoolgirls XI (111/6 after 32.4 overs) - DRAW due to rain affected play.

Last Thursday 4 April saw the Wellington Wanderer’s showcase twenty-two of Wellington’s most promising schoolgirls cricketers at the Cello Basin Reserve in a “Schoolgirls Clash” The Blue team was coached on the day by Bree James (New Zealand Junior World Series Indoor Cricket Rep, Wellington U19) and captained by Ava Conroy (Wellington A and Wellington U19), and the White team was coached on the day by Dhriti Girish (Wellington A, Wellington U19) and captained by Isla McKenzie (Wellington A, Wellington U19)

The Blue team won the toss, and with the weather forecast predicting imminent rain, elected to bat. Highlights of the innings included the 132 run partnership between Neha Ramanthan (67 runs) and Lily Campbell (65 runs) which anchored the Blue teams inning well into the 31st over It took an exceptional one handed catch by Isla McKenzie at short cover to send Neha walking from Nell McCrystal’s bowling, before Isla also helped dispatch Lily with another well taken catch at third man from Jess Robinson’s bowling. Ava Conroy had a wonderful but brief cameo, belting off a quick 30 runs shortly before being bowled by Isla McKenzie. Best bowling figures were had by Jessica Robinson - 6 overs for 18 runs and two wickets, and Isla McKenzie - 5 overs, 10 runs and 1 wicket

There were a few gentle spits of rain as the teams proceeded to the Norwood Room for a combined team lunch, but luck stayed on the girls side and they were able to head back out to play as the threatening rain continued to pass over

Despite the best efforts of the White team’s top order batters, they just could not increase the run rate or build steady partnerships under the Blue team’s relentless bowling attack and disciplined fielding Highlights from the innings were Nell McCrystal’s and Sophie Niclaus’ gritty and determined middle order batting partnership Nell top scored for the White team with 35 runs not out. Best bowling figures went to Carys Seddon - 4 overs, 15 runs and 2 wickets, Eva Hay - 4 overs, 10 runs, 1 wicket, Lily Campbell 4 overs, 15 runs, 1 wicket, Amelia Newell 3 overs, 12 runs, 1 wicket and Emma Parker - 4 overs, 5 runs

The umpires were finally forced to abandon the game just after 4pm as persistent drizzle settled in. This may have been in the White team’s favour, as they required 88 runs to win off 7.2 overs.

The Schoolgirls Clash was a totally awesome experience for everyone involved A massive shout out to the Wanderer’s Cricket Club, especially the President, William Marshall, Becs Newell and Jasmine Bailey for being the key drivers that made this event happen at such short notice, and for their amazing support to help grow and promote College girls cricket A special shout out to Dhriti and Bree for stepping up and mentoring and coaching the teams too The future of women’s cricket in Wellington is looking bright

WANDERERS CC V SEDDON CC AND UNITED COUNTRY & VINEYARD CC KINDRED TRI-SERIES 6 APRIL 2024

A sublime 70 from just 38 balls by Jeremy Dean was the highlight of the Wanderers T15 Tri-Series held at the Basin Reserve last Saturday. The innings came in what was an effective final between Wanderers and United and Country Vineyards after both had defeated Seddon Cricket Club in the first two matches of the day. In the result, the Marshall Cup (for matches between Seddon and Wanderers) and Cook Strait Classic Cups (for matches between UCVC and Wanderers) will spend the winter with the Wanderers at the top of the RA Vance Stand The Currie Cup (for matches between Seddon and UCVC) went back to Blenheim

A sunny and windless day greeted the teams at the unusually early start of 8 30am Wanderers chose to bowl first despite the dew in the first match against Seddon. The decision looked questionable initially as Ben Strang took to the local bowlers with relish, hitting boundaries on both sides of the wicket and depositing Hamish Marshall well over the fence and into the seating. But a magic delivery from Brett Coffey triggered a collapse, taking out James Marshall with a leg-cutter that landed on middle and beat him all ends up taking the top of off That’s two international scalps for Coffey this summer on the Kindred circuit

After Strang’s blistering innings ended on 48 off 26 Seddon’s middle and lower order was unable to keep up the momentum, with Andrew Wilson very parsimonious in taking 3/18 with his leg spin. Seddon ended on an under par 114/9. Wanderers managed to chase down the total with 12 deliveries to spare and Jeremy Dean, Duncan Elliott, Hamish Marshall, and Andrew Fullerton-Smith all contributing.

In the second game, UCVC batted and was in early trouble, with Paul Hickman being dismissed for a royal UCVC’s innings was dominated by Bryn Cotching, who was dismissed swinging at the death for 58 from 41 including a couple of cleanly struck maximums Seddon’s reply was led by Ben Strang and James Marshall but without much support. UCVC showed good athleticism in the field to keep runs tight and scoreboard pressure told in the end,
