MEMBERS' NEWSLETTER

Our inaugural Wanderers Young Cricketers Programme has concluded for the season, with 16 players graduating the season's programme in March.

We were fortunate to have two Test Matches in Wellington at the Cello Basin Reserve We hosted the Test Match Breakfast in February and the Sunday Members' Luncheon in March We also hosted our Annual Founders' Day during the Wellington v Auckland Super Smash Double Header in February.

There has been plenty of action on the field with 10 school matches played, a highlight being the first schoolboys and schoolgirls double header against Hutt Valley High School. Unfortunately the weather did not play ball this season, with six of these matches rained out.

We hosted a number of special fixtures, including the annual Governor General's XI and Willows Schoolboys' matches at the Cello Basin Reserve

The Wanderers’ Kindred team have also had plenty of action, travelling to Auckland for the NZ Kindred Cup, to Blenheim to play United Country and Vineyards, and hosting the Wanderers Tri Series at the Cello Basin Reserve.

FOUNDERS DAY

Founders & Family Day

What a thrill to see so many Wanderers, young and older, at our Founders & Family Day. Life Members, Dutchy Du Chateau Members, John Standish Members and guests all enjoyed a day at the cricket in our new Peter Field Clubrooms. Thanks to our Wanderers Young Cricketers and their guardians who also joined us for the day to cheer on the Blaze and Firebirds.

We are grateful to call the Cello Basin Reserve our home and to have the privilege of watching cricket from one of the best vantage points in the Basin.

The return of Test Match cricket saw us again host a special Wanderers CC tradition, the Test Match Breakfast

On 24th February we held our Test Match Breakfast in the Norwood Room at the Cello Basin Reserve.

Bright and early on Day 1 of the England Test Match, the RA Vance Stand was buzzing! With a sold out Norwood Room, the Breakfast was a great success.

We welcomed two former BLACKCAPS, Dion Nash and John Bracewell, who each have their own place in New Zealand's cricket history and guests heard about their experiences on and off the field. This was followed by a tour of the New Zealand Cricket Museum.

SRI LANKA DAY 3

On Day 3 of the Sri Lanka Test Match, we hosted our Sunday Members' Luncheon

We were fortunate to have had Wellington Firebird players, Logan van Beek and Pete Younghusband join us for the Day 3 Members' Luncheon during the Sri Lanka Test Match. In a Q&A panel, hosted by Life Member Bryan Waddle, members enjoyed lunch, and watched the afternoon's action in the prestigious Norwood Room. It was also great to have Cricket Wellington Board Members and Cricket Wellington Umpires and Scorers Association Umpires in attendance.

WANDERERS CC V RATHKEALE COLLEGE - 27TH NOVEMBER

Rathkeale College won by 98 Runs

The best moment of the day was actually getting a game in at all. Driving out of Wellington and seeing flooding along the State Highway 2, there were several comments of "are we on or off". Rain was expected all day, however it held off at Rathkeale until 10 minutes after the last ball was bowled.

Marco Scoble bowled exceptionally well for the Wanderers, taking five wickets. He showed great maturity and control for a 15 year old and his leg spinners came down with bombs on them. Scott McHardy provided two stumpings and displayed reflexes not seen since Alan Knott back in 1981, well that was what he told us anyway.

A superb last wicket partnership of 58 runs by Rathkeale effectively won them the game.

WANDERERS CC V WELLINGTON GIRLS' COLLEGE - 12TH DECEMBER

Wanderers won by 57 runs

This was the Wanderers' first women ’ s match against a Girls' College XI and was played on a lovely summer evening on the picturesque Kelburn Park, under clear blue skies and plenty of sunshine The evening was nicely concluded with a BBQ for all A big thank you to William Marshall, Brian Steele, Nicole Baird, Anirudha Chitre and Scott Ryland for all of their support, whether supporting the women's game, umpiring, organising teams, or manning the BBQ. We couldn’t have had such a great time without their behind-thescenes work.

WANDERERS CC V SCOTS COLLEGE - 15TH JANUARY

Wanderers won by 6 wickets

What a stunning way to kick off 2023 It was a thrill to have three Scots old boys take the field - Ishann Ghandi, Tim Bryant and Elliot Seddon, with Middle School teacher, Clive Venter there as well. Thanks to Scots College for such a welcoming day.

WANDERERS CC V ST PATS SILVERSTREAM - 20TH JANUARY

Wanderers won by 6 wickets

Wanderers batted first and could only reach 122 all out. Nic Williams with 28* and Ben Strang with 27 were the leading performers. Stream knocked off the total with just three down: Tim Hyndman, Ollie Bennett and Nic Williams taking a wicket a piece. This was a special game for Wanderer Nic Williams and son Victor, getting to bat together for the first time in a match.

WANDERERS CC V UNITED COUNTRY AND VINEYARDS CRICKET CLUB - 21ST JANUARY

Wanderers won by one run

Over Wellington Anniversary weekend, our Kindred team, along with their families travelled to Blenheim to take on the United Country and Vineyards team at Black Cottage A huge thank you to Dave Clouston and the entire UC&V team, families and local community for their welcoming and generous hospitality over the weekend. We felt very privileged and grateful to be invited to such a unique place. And what a memorable game it was, with the first match for the inaugural Cook Strait Classic Cup coming down to the last ball of the 80th over. Wanderers won by a single run as the home side came up agonisingly short Neither team gave up, and fought to the end in an absolute thriller We can’t wait to return the invitation in 2024 when UC&V make the trip over to play for the Cook Strait Classic Cup again.

WANDERERS CC V TAWA COLLEGE - 22ND JANUARY

Wanderers won by 92 runs

The match was played in great spirits, with the Wanderers having seven Tawa College Old Boys in their XI.

Tawa College had several 1st XI players unavailable, providing 2nd XI players with an excellent opportunity to step up and gain experience Tawa coach Frans Van Straten did a great job with the team and appreciated the encouragement that his players recieved from the Wanderers XI.

Beck McDonald opened the batting for the Wanderers and took a Finn Allen-like approach After being dropped in the first over, he proceeded to hit boundaries all over Alex Moore Park, retiring on 53 off 20 balls. Wellington Over-50s rep Tim Horne hit a rollicking 51 and also retired after taking to the tiring Tawa attack late in the innings.

The bowling performance of note for the Wanderers came from 12-year-old Upper Hutt player Thomas Davis Gates His four overs for ten runs was a fine effort Thomas also showed the most speed in the field and the best arm amongst the Wanderers' fielders.

Lachlan Bond was the pick of the Tawa College batters. An aggressive 33, including two big sixes, suggested more runs won’t be far away for him. Wanderers' highlights: Beck McDonald, 53 retired, Tim Horne, 51, retired, Jason Davis, 2/9 off 4 overs, Sam Lewis, 2/18 off 4 overs.

Tawa College highlights: Lachlan Bond 33 runs and 1/19 off 5 overs and Lachie Clark 128 off 4 overs.

WANDERERS CC V ST PAT'S TOWN - 25TH JANUARY Wanderers lost by 72 runs

St Pat's Town won the toss and batted first, scoring 173. In reply, Wanderers were all out for 101.

After being in trouble early at 105-7, the home side posted a defendable score with help from some lower-order partnerships and number 9 Ollie Bennett, who hit 42 Wanderers player and St Pats Town Old Boy Yashraj Kalsi bowled beautifully, taking 321 from his 8 overs. He was supported by Tim Hyndman, who opened the bowling and took 2-25 from his eight overs.

In reply, Wanderers started well and, at 53-3, were in a healthy position. However, St Pat's all-rounder Louie Ayers changed that, taking four wickets for nine runs from seven overs With the bat for the Wanderers, Richard Sheehan scored 37, and Yashraj Kalsi backed up his bowling figures with a brisk 21.

It was fantastic to have several St Pats Old Boys in the Wanderers CC Team for this fixture: Richard Sheehan, Jacob Madigan, Jordi Cleary, Nishan John, and Matthew Hunt.

WANDERERS CC V NZ ARMY - 11TH FEBRUARY

Wanderers lost by 36 runs

Wanderers CC travelled north to Waiouru by invitation from Brigadier Hugh McAslan and the New Zealand Army. On the morning of the fixture the key slid into the pitch fairly easily. The ground is NZ’s highest altitude cricket venue, so the guys hoped the ball would fly further. Wanderers restricted NZ Army to 152-9 off their 40 overs. Jono Reid 4-31 off 8 and Stephen Hewson 4-34 off 8 were the pick of the bowlers. In reply, Wanderers were dismissed for 116, with good contributions from Chris Jeffries (42), Tom Lancaster (32) and Martin Pike (27). The Army lads caught everything, including a couple of crackers! We may have come second, but this weekend was about more than what happened on the field.

WANDERERS CC V WELLINGTON COLLEGE - 12TH FEBRUARY

Wanderers won by 65 runs

Wanderers CC retained the Roger Moses Trophy against Wellington College 1st XI Batting first, Wanderers scored 218 off 40 overs thanks to a stylish 80 from opener Sam French. In reply, Wellington College were all out for 153 with Marco Muollo taking 3-15 from five overs. Amogh Paranjpe scored 74* for College in a patient and composed innings on a very difficult pitch that was taking sub-continental-like spin.

It was an honour to have Roger Moses watching, and he was there to present the trophy at then end of play. It was a special day with eight old boys involved in the fixture, enjoying the opportunity to reminisce about their time playing at school. A big thanks to Rob Petit for helping us with this fixture after it was rained out pre-Christmas. We are looking forward to putting the trophy back on the line next season.

WANDERERS CC V HIBS- 5TH MARCH

Wanderers won by 86 runs

Wanderers posted 177 against HIBS with old boy and Central Districts' Stag Brett Johnson showing the way with 50-odd retired and Matt Wills making 30. HIBS were dismissed for 90 with another alumni, Sam Fraser, nabbing five wickets. Thanks to Canterbury-based Wanderer Jeremy Benton for travelling up and skippering what has to be one of the strongest Wanderers teams to have taken the field for the Club.

WANDERERS CC V OCEAN BEACH - 10TH MARCH

Match abandoned

At the picturesque Ocean Beach ground, the home side won the toss and were 86-5 from 15 of a 25 over game before the thunder and lightning drove us from the field. Skipper Glenn Wilkinson bowled OBCC skipper Matt Holden with the ball of the century, and Todrick Taylor took an excellent outfield catch to dismiss the dangerous Brad Moar Festivities commenced in the wool shed where Wanderers took out an indoor cricket challenge. Wives and partners then joined the teams for a superb evening at Craggy Range winery. It was an excellent trip with great tourists who are all keen to be involved in further Wanderers' over-50s expeditions.

WANDERERS CC V GOVERNOR GENERAL'S SCHOOLGIRLS - 26TH MARCH Wanderers won by 6 wickets

It was a beautiful day at the Cello Basin Reserve for the final game of the season for most of the girls and women. To have their names up on the scoreboard at the home of cricket was fun (thanks to scorers/scoreboard team - Cathy Dent, Julie Francis and Mike Kells). It was great having two experienced umpires, with Evan Watkin speaking to the captains about the international matches in which he has officiated, and using his special Don Bradman / Queen Elizabeth II coin at the toss.

Interaction between the teams was fantastic, with Blaze players, leading club cricketers and young, emerging cricketers mixing on the hallowed turf. The team photo incorporated the Schoolgirls in their blazers and the Wanderers in their new kit, which looked flash After early wobbles the Governor-General's team built crucial partnerships at the end, with Hannah Francis (28* off 28), Hannah Ryan (24 off 25) and Ava Conroy (19 off 20) setting up a defendable score on the big boundaries. Blaze player Caitlin King (47* off 33) led from the front for the Wanderers and combined with Neha Ramanathan (20 off 25) for a match-defining 72-run partnership .

We have recently set up a new club shop online for members to order their club kit.

We need to raise $2,500 to complete this project and are looking for donations from generous Club members who would like to contribute to protecting our history.

The Club has over 75 years of memories stored in a large plastic box. This history is at risk of being lost forever if we don't protect it and create a way of keeping it accessible for future generations.

We have scorebooks, club material related to the 25th and 50th Anniversaries, minute books and administration files dating back to the founding of the Club, plus photos from the 1950s onwards that capture so much of our colourful history.

We have sourced a quote from New Zealand Micrographic Services to digitise all these materials so we can store them online and protect the history of our club.
