Page 1

2022

It's only November, and we've already seen a monumental amount of action on and off the field.

We kicked off the season by opening our new Peterfield Clubrooms at the top of the RA Vance Stand before our AGM. We hosted The White Rose Golf Day at Shandon GC in October, the inaugural Wanderers’ Young Cricketers Programme has launched, and Club fixtures are underway.

The early part of the season has seen the Wanderers’ Kindred team travel to Auckland for the NZ Kindred Cup Unfortunately, our annual Whanganui Collegiate fixture was abandoned due to weather.

This summer is packed full of Club events and fixtures. We have no fewer than 40 entries in the calendar (see page 14) Plus, our marquee event, the Test Match Breakfast on 24 February, is one you will want to attend as New Zealand meets England at the Cello Basin Reserve. In March we'll host the inaugural Test Match Sunday Luncheon during the Sri Lanka Test match The Founders & Family Day will be another great occasion at the Basin

Thanks to every single member for continuing to support our Club. With your continued support, we can keep delivering on our Club's mission to develop youth cricketers and connect past players

We hope you enjoy your Spring 2022 Members’ Newsletter.

The 2022-23 cricket season is finally here. The Club is looking forward to one of the biggest seasons in our history.

AGM & CLUBROOMS OPENING

On 28 September we held our 2022 AGM and officially opened our new Peterfield Clubrooms high in the RA Vance Stand.

This AGM was a special event for many reasons as we have embarked on several new projects during the off-season, including establishing our new clubrooms, introducing a youth cricket initiative to better serve young cricketers, and making changes to our membership model.

The annual White Rose Golf Day held on 14 October at Shandon Golf Club was another outstanding success.

White Rose Golf Trophy winners by a narrow margin were the Eastern Suburbs CC team of John Gloag, Andrew Fullerton-Smith, Ronnie Nathu and Lance Dry. Easts also took out second place, while the Shoe Clinic four came in third.

Thanks to Kāpura, Fortune Favours, Shandon Golf Club and Gazley for their support in running this event; and to Acme & Co, Sky Stadium, Nicki Cruickshank and Cricket Wellington for donations of prizes and items to auction. MATCH REPORTS

2022 NZ KINDRED CUP – NORTH SHORE CRICKET CLUB

Wanderers’ Kindred side travelled to Devonport, Auckland, in early November, to compete in the 2022 NZ Kindred Cup. With five former first class cricketers in the squad, the team had high expectations.

Although the team did not live up to those pre-tournament expectations, losing all three matches in close encounters, the cricket was played in the right spirit, and we're looking forward to the next Kindred Cup early in 2024.

Thanks to Kent Currie and Brett Hollister for organising and making the weekend a success. The Kindred Cup gets better each year, and the NSCC can be really proud of how they delivered the event. You completely nailed it fireworks display and all.

Wanderers are pleased to be part of this Kindred Cricket movement, and although we are probably never going to be in the running for the top prize, for us the weekend is about cricket being played in the right way, with good people from all over New Zealand, and whatever the result, enjoying a beer and a laugh at the end of it all

In the first match at Devonport, Wanderers lost to the Haberdashers CC from Marton in a final over thriller Wanderers CC posted a competitive 159

2 19. The Haberdashers Duncan Hall, batting at number nine, scored an impressive 45* from very few balls to win the match for his side in the last over.

It was special to have two new Wanderers CC members make their debuts. Congratulations to Richard Jones and Scott Weenink, both past Wellington cricketers.

WANDERERS V UNITED COUNTRY & VINEYARDS CC – NZ KINDRED CUP

We came up short against the Marlborough wine makers from United Country & Vineyards CC in our second match. Batting first, Wanderers posted a middling 120 from 20 overs, with a lot of our batters getting starts but no one kicking on. Richard Petrie made 26, while Scott Weenink, Richard Jones and Stephen Mather each made 17. Shand took two wickets for 2 runs, and Dave Clouston and Simon Muir with two wickets apiece for United Country & Vineyard CC.

In reply, UCVC chased the total down in 17 overs, with Willie Marshall taking 2 13 off three. Scott Weenink was hard to get away on a wicket that took plenty of turn and took 2 11 off his four overs. Duncan Grigg, 30* and Tarin Mason, with a quick fire 22 made their chase a comfortable one.

United Country & Vineyard CC have invited us to travel to play them in Marlborough in January over Wellington Anniversary weekend. We can't wait for a 40-over rematch at their picturesque Black Cottage Cricket Ground.

WANDERERS CC V GREYTOWN CC – NZ KINDRED CUP

In the third match of the Cup weekend, Wanderers lost to Greytown CC, who batted first and posted a healthy 132 from an abbreviated 15 overs. Greytown's first drop, Kirk Saunders, scored a breezy 51 from just 21 balls.

Stephen Mather took 2-19 off two overs, with Willie Marshall, Richard Petrie, Jack Castle and Scott Weenink each claiming a wicket each.

Chasing 133 for the win, Wanderers took it to the wire again. Needing nine runs from the final over with one wicket in hand, we were bowled out for 128, despite lower order heroics from Jack Castle with 22 off only a handful of balls.

Stephen Mather top scored with 37 and Richard Jones made 34.

There were some tired bodies by the end of the final match of the weekend. We now have 18 months to prepare for the 2024 NZ Kindred Cup.

Wanderers’ Young Cricketers’ Programme is now live. We have 13 young cricketers from across Wellington in the Programme.

Our inaugural Young Cricketers’ Programme has begun. We have 13 young cricketers across Wellington in the 2022 23 Programme: Meika Joyce and Katherine Hickey from St Catherine's College; Hadlee Vernon and Toby Tomkies from Tawa College; Keisha Pegg and Kendyll Cooper from Heretaunga College; Fraser O'Regan Smith and Rico Taylor from Rongotai College; Gabriella Esterhuize and Riley Watkin from Aotea College; Cara McCully from Newlands College, Carys Seddon from Samuel Marsden Collegiate and Saad Asif from St Bernard's College. The monthly clinics would not be possible without the coaches who volunteer to run them. We had Grant Elliott and Hamish Marshall as our coaches for our September session, while Glenn Pocknall and Peter Younghusband worked with the players in October.

A special thanks go to Kilbirnie Sports for sponsoring our Young Cricketers’ Programme for the 2022 23 season. They have provided the Club with a first class practice kit chocka full of training equipment and balls to use at the clinics. Thanks to Scott Lindsay and his team for their incredible generosity.

The Club needs your help. We're looking for donations to help digitise all our Club records, minute books, and photos from 1946 till today.

We need to raise $2,500 to complete this project and are looking for donations from generous Club members who would like to contribute to protecting our history.

The Club has over 75 years of memories stored in a large plastic box. This history is at risk of being lost forever if we don't protect it and create a way of keeping it accessible for future generations.

We have scorebooks, club material related to the 25th and 50th Anniversaries, minute books and administration files dating back to the founding of the Club, plus photos from the 1950s onwards that capture so much of our colourful history.

We have sourced a quote from New Zealand Micrographic Services to digitise all these materials so we can store them online and protect the history of our club.
