Management assistant Ema Jaramillo and event experience coordinator Luis Rios manage the booth, passing out bags, t-shirts, and event flyers.

Coming up the first weekend in December: the annual Lighted Boat Parade. The public is invited to take part in the parade, either by joining the boats or spectating from the Island along the Entertainment District and The Green, where bleacher seating will be available. (Of note: Tours by Welcome Home RGV has secured boat entries and is offering the event as a tour. Visit welcomehomergv.com to purchase.) Pickleball on Padre is another upcoming event--January 8 – 12--at the South Padre Island Convention Center. Meanwhile, the Island is home to two pickleball courts, with four more under construction. While the summer might appear to be the busy season, the CVB is busy year-round, welcoming visitors from all over the world. “We’re a first-class beach destination,” says Jaramillo. Rios adds, “As soon as you

cross the [Queen Isabella Memorial] Causeway, it feels like you’re in a whole different place. Its very relaxing.” The SPI CVB and Visit Laredo were two of 65 vendors taking part in the fair. Other vendors included Colair, Inc.; Osprey Cruises; Galvan Insurance; Rio Grande Regional Hospital; Texas Oncology; Suerte Bar & Grill; SPI

Birding, Nature Center and Alligator Sanctuary; and McAllen International Airport, just to name a few. While Joe Graham of Breakaway Cruises utilized his radio voice to help call out winning numbers for the vendor-donated door prizes, Peter Loring, activity director for Seven Oaks RV Resort in Mission, took a seat.

His succinct response when asked how the Connection Fair went: “Good. Happy Hugsgiving to Everyone Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

We want to send out hugs of thanks

to all who have been alongside this ministry and given in so many different ways. Thanks to y’all, we get to experience Thanksgiving every day! Over the last nine years, we have been so blessed by all of you who bring in bags of hats, shawls, and blankets when you arrive back to your South Texas home and those who mail boxes and boxes all year to add to the Donation Chest. Thank you! These sweet boxes of gifts always come with a card of encouragement that touches everyone’s heart. And you all continue to send financial donations and support to the shop, and those help keep the lights on and the needles going! As a small nonprofit, with your gifts and God’s direction, we are able to help thousands around the world get a bit of “love in every stitch” that is put together. There is such a variety of gifts being sent out, and their common thread is the love and care they contain. There will be headbands in Bangladesh, hats for the homeless in McAllen, and

blankets in Progresso, Mexico, and, well…the list goes on! Also, we know you come here for the warm weather,

but for those who live here year-round, our “winter” can get pretty cold. Thanks to your lovely, warm gifts, we are also blessed to be able to provide some temporary warmth to our locals who are without housing or who do not have access to a home with heat. This past year has also seen the addition of clinics we serve with the provision of Knitted Knockers. This year, over 300 Knockers have been collected for distribution throughout the year. What a blessing to these women. Thank you! Happy Hugsgiving, Everyone! Give each other a hug from all of us, and enjoy your Turkey Day! Remember, there are so many ways to “stitch it forward.” We would love y’all to join us, in person, at The Lamb’s Loom.

We are located at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen. We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. Updates and other information are available on our website at thelambsloom.com Let’s continue to #stitchitforward together! We’re putting #loveineverystitch. •

Things I Have Learned A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy by Bill Ward

The View From the Back of the Ambulance

I wrote this story for another

Bill Ward is a retired health-care administrator from Minnesota and a regular columnist, author, and untalented rock ‘n’ roll musician, playing with the band Night Ryders. He winters at Casa Del Sol in Donna. You can contact Bill by email at bwward@charter.net.

publication a few years ago in response to a bit of a hiccup in my life. It seems fitting to bring it back to share with all of you today. I think it fits nicely with our times. As I was rolling down the highway, I was thinking, “So this is the view from the back of the ambulance. Hey, that could be a great book title!” I tucked the thought away for future reference. However, as the hours and days since have passed, I came to realize the story was already written. There really was something to view from the back of the ambulance. It just took a few days to become visible. The view actually started as soon as my event started.

People I worked with rallied to support me. In minutes, my family was at my side, and they literally were in my view behind us as we drove down the highway. Then a couple good friends showed up at the emergency room. I had prayer partners before we even knew what to pray for. Back home, my phone was ringing with others, concerned. The church prayer chain activated. My family members’ coworkers were offering concern and help, if we needed it. The community was rallying to support us. I realized the view from the back of the ambulance was a lot like seeing the crew of support people in the old cell phone ads. (Can you hear me now?) So what does this have to do with all of us? The answer is EVERYTHING! My view was of the heart and soul of a small community. It was people’s connectedness and concern that comes from plugging into a place where, as they said at Cheers, “Everybody knows your name.”

Our towns are full of buildings, institutions, roads, stores, and other infrastructure. That is the stuff you see when you drive through, and that is the visual image we have of any town. But that is just the shell. The heart is the people.

One thing I have learned is that our lives in our communities will be defined by the people we surround ourselves with. Our “small townness” gives us a leg up on that, not because we are better people than those in the city but because we are where we all know each other. The same is true in our RGV parks. Are you plugged in adequately to be a part of that? If not, plug in, join, volunteer, relate, sign up, or do whatever it takes to get into the fabric of the small town. Don’t do it for what you can get out of it. Do it for what you can put into it. The rest all works out. It’s a great place to be. I’m just sayin’.•

10th Annual A Season of Hope Arts Festival: Celebrating Education and the Art We welcome the community to join

in our festivities as we celebrate the 10th Annual A Season of Hope Arts Festival. This McAllen holiday tradition celebrates visual and performing arts education and artists in the Rio Grande Valley. In addition, it encourages young people in our community to explore and appreciate the Arts. This year, the festival will be a two-day event. The festivities begin on Black Friday, November 24, with the Lighting of the Tree at 5:30 p.m. Music will be provided throughout the evening by students from Creative Arts Studio. Creative Arts Studio is a collective of local artists empowering our communities through fine arts education. The evening continues with “Art at the Village” from 6 - 9 p.m. Local artists will have their work on display and be on hand to show and sell their original work. The festival continues Saturday, November 25, from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Support your local artists

by shopping the assortment of professional artists’ booths. They will exhibit their masterpieces of

jewelry, paintings, photographs, sculptures, and other media. All the works of art that are for sale at A Season of Hope Arts Festival are original, handcrafted pieces. Most are one of a kind. In addition, 97.7, The City radio station, will provide holiday music throughout the day. The City’s focus is to encourage kids to become involved in media arts through radio classes and on-air experience. Exhibiting artists had to go through a lengthy selection process before being chosen to participate in this annual event. Proceeds from the professional artists’ application fee and the selected artists’ booth fees provide scholarships f o r Va l l e y s t u d e n t s . Students studying draw-

ing, painting, photography, dance, music, and voice are eligible for these scholarships. For further information about A Season of Hope Arts Festival, contact Yoli Cantu at 956-687-8682. •

Perspectives by Sheila Freeland, Chaplain’s Wife

When walking, we are told to

look ahead and not down. “Keep your focus on the destina-tion,” they say. I don’t know about you, but that’s a hard thing to do. For me, it’s a habit to look down and see what is right before me, whether there is a rock, a crack in the sidewalk, a limb, or any other obstacle that may be in my path. I have noticed when I am looking down, I don’t walk as straight and my posture isn’t the best. I am kind of all over the place with my steps. While focusing on my destination, I walk much straighter and with a better posture. I’m not worrying about what’s right before me… just focused on the goal. My goal is to finish well, no matter what obstacle may or may not be laying before me.

Focus On Your Destination This can also be our walk with Jesus and through this world. When we look down and see all of the obstacles we may have, we get distracted over how to avoid them or fix them or how to get through them. The obstacles may be like pain, grief, work, or other struggles that come up in this world. We can stumble and be flippy floppy with where we want to walk, but if we would just keep our eye on Jesus and have Him as our destination, then our walk would be straighter with less worry about what may or may not be right before us. John 1:36 KJV And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
