A 55+ Co-Ed League of Their Own

Did someone say cheese? No, I’m not talking about smiling for a picture. I’m talking about the kind you eat—morning, noon, or night.
It’s no secret to those who know me that I love cheese. In fact, when I see the Cheeseheads during the Packers games, I can’t help but feel like I should have one of those to just wear around town. When I see Wisconsin license plates or even hear “Wisconsin,” all I can think of is all of the varieties of Wisconsin cheese I have tasted—and loved.
It’s also no secret that my dream is to one day be a Summer Wisconsinite. But every time I say that, friends from other Midwestern states try to convince me I’d love their states even more. Do you think I should consider becoming a Summer Midwesterner, instead? What, from your Midwestern state, would I savor the way I do Wisconsin cheese?
Now, it doesn’t have to be food. Is there a place, a summer event, or something else your state is known for that would draw me back, summer after summer?
I’m going to post this column on our Facebook page. Please answer these two questions for me:
1.What other Midwestern states should I consider…when I finally get to be you?
2. What place, event, food, or (fill in the blank) would bring me back, year after year?

“One quick thing,’” Rosy Franks said as our interview wrapped up. “I want to tell you about my softball glove.”
Franks, 68, began playing softball at 18 in a parks and recreation league. When she broke her finger at 40, she decided to leave it to the younger players.
Franks still wanted to play the sport, but there were no senior leagues available in her community. That was…until she began visiting the Rio Grande Valley via Wisconsin and discovered the Ed Martens Senior Texan Softball League in McAllen.
Franks didn’t hesitate to join and has been with the League for 16 years. She did miss one year--as a player--but served as an assistant manager. “ I really believe in good sportsmanship.” Before and after each season, she oils up her softball glove, keeping it in flexible shape.
She keeps herself in shape, too, playing pickleball and water volleyball, walking, cycling, and swimming.
Franks even recruits, inviting her neighbor, Sherryl Hibberd, a winter visitor from Pennsylvania, to join. “I loved it,” Hibberd says. “That was 10 years ago, and I have been playing ever since.”

from neighborhood games as a kid to playing in a teacher league as an adult. “What’s not to like?!”
Hibberd, who turns 65 this spring, says playing softball motivates her to stay active. “There’s a lot in it for me, health-wise, mental-wise; it’s enormous.”
In addition to the health aspects, Hibberd raves about the camaraderie and bonding experiences of the League.
Frank feels the same. “It’s so much fun. It’s like a reunion to see everybody!”
An annual reunion where new members are welcome.
Tara Piantanida-Kelly is a full-time RVer and has been coming to the Valley for three years. She didn’t hesitate when her husband, Bob, asked if she wanted



to play ball, having played in a church league years before.
“It’s very welcoming,” she says of her initial experience. “Everybody was really helpful and nice.”
Piantanida-Kelly has stepped up to help promote the League, creating and managing the Ed Martens Senior Texans Softball League Facebook page--posting updates, information, and player profile video reels and inviting people to take part in the seasonal League.
The League is open to men and women 55 and older. Practices begin the first Tuesday in November and continue through December, when players are divided into A Division (major league) and B Division (minor league), based on ability.
The season begins the first week of January and runs through February, culminating in March with playoffs and the Can-Am (Canadian-American) games.
The public is invited to watch the Can-Am games Friday, March 14, at 9:30 a.m. at McAllen’s West Side Park, 2000 S. Ware Rd. There’s free admission and parking, with hot dogs, snacks and drinks for sale; no outside food or drinks are allowed. Bleacher seating will be available, and spectators can bring lawn chairs.
Throwing out the first pitch will be the League’s namesake, Ed Marten, who founded the softball club 30 years ago.
This season, 120 men and women participated in the co-ed 55+ League.
While Hibberd opted to sit this season out, she looks forward to returning and hopes others are inspired to come out and play ball.
“Down here, we’re all together. We have each other,” Frank says, referring to the Winter Texan community. “The people here are my family, including the softball League.”
A family, indeed. Back to that special softball glove, a gift received 45 years ago from Frank’s husband, Terry, when they were newlyweds. Terry never missed a game before his passing 10 years ago. “He was as much a part of the team as anyone else,” Frank shared. “He’d be happy that I’m still playing.”

Winter Texan Spotlight Line Dance Bash a Hit
Keep McAllen Beautiful (KMB) introduces the artists behind the irrigation pipe masterpieces through their Meet the Artist series. Look for Meet the Artist in our issues throughout the 2024 – 2025 season.
Gloria Ester Moreno is a local artist born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley. She is mostly selftaught and paints with acrylics in a variety of styles and techniques, using both brushes and palette knives. Some of her favorite subjects to paint are stilllife, landscapes, sunsets, palm trees, birds, roosters, and other animals.

Gloria’s art has appeared in the San Francisco Zoo Botanical Gardens and has also won a Special Merit Award in an international art competition. She has also won several 1st – 4th-place awards in smaller art competitions.
In addition to painting, Gloria also enjoys photography and exploring the beauty of nature.

The 2025 RGV Line Dance Bash held January 26 was a dancing success, according to organizers. Attendees suggested making the bash a monthly event, with dance demos for each line dance.
In its third year, the event was held in the large hall at Tropic Star RV Resort in Pharr to accommodate all 140 attendees. Event coordinators were Pat Yoder of Pharr South RV Resort and Julie Johnson of Tropic Star, with a volunteer base helping as greeters, cashiers, DJ, sound system operators, kitchen staff, instructors, dancers, and set-up and clean-up crews.
Dances were selected by the most known among Winter and Converted Texan line dancers in the Rio Grande Valley, with a playlist consisting of beginner level to slightly more advanced and with instructor input. Instructors who took part have teaching experience here in the Valley and back home. Their experience ranged from six to 30 years.
Highlights of this event included all dancers participating in “ice breakers,” dancing the Grand March and Sasha, as well as the Contras, which is not as widely known. The Contras consists of parallel rows of dancers facing each other with repetitive dance steps and pass-throughs. The event, by the numbers: 140 participants hailed from 10 different RV parks across the Valley, and there were a total of 48 dances. The floor was split with beginners on one end and high beginners on the other, making it easier for dancers to focus on their dance-level version.
Yoder’s hope for those who attended is that each person left with new friends, accomplishments, and a smile on their faces. •

The Texas Mountain Laurel makes its presence known each spring with its fragrant and vibrant purple blooms. Native to Texas, the evergreen shrub can grow 30 feet high, depending on pruning. McAllen’s McAuliffe Park, 3260 W. Daffodil, is home to quite a few. To experience their sweet, grape-like aroma, plan to walk the park trails from late February to mid-April when the trees are heavy with blooms.




55th Annual NDÉ DÁÁ
Homecoming Pow Wow

This spring, Konitsaa Nde Native Community, along with the Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas, will be hosting the 55th Annual NDÉ DÁÁ Homecoming Pow Wow. The name of the pow wow is made up of two Apache words: NDÉ, which means the people, and DÁÁ which means the spring season. This tribal gathering includes Native American dancers, tribal members, spectators, and vendors from all over the country and world.
Those in attendance will experience Native American culture through the drum music, singing, and dancing. There will be raffles and cake walks, and the vendors will include a food booth selling Native American food and other vendors who sell Native American jewelry, arts, and crafts.
This event will be held at the City of Alton Recreation Center,349 Dawes Ave. in Alton, Saturday, March 1. The event is open to the public, and admission is free. •

The Curse of Shiny Things
I am thinking it is a lot. But even if I could, I would never push the delete button on any of it. By learning how to make a call through the operator, I was able to call out to my grandma’s farm any time I wanted to. By sharing the butchering duties when the family gathered at my grandma’s farm, I learned what I was capable of, and I gained great stories to share with my kids. (I bet a good share of you all have chasing headless chicken stories.)

Lots of them are broken. Many are just plain and uninteresting. But every once in a while, there is a real gem just laying there waiting to be found.

Calling All RGV Clog Dancers, Dance Instructors, and PE Teachers

The Annual Clog Fun Dance 2025 at San Juan Gardens RV Park will take place Friday, February 28, from 1– 4 p.m. This Fun Dance is hosted by The Tippy Toe Cloggers. Guest of honor for the event is Joe Dawley from Kansas, a nationally certified clogging instructor. Dawley will demonstrate flatfoot and buck clog dancing. The Texas Clogging Council vice president for our region, Deborah Duckett, will also attend. Be prepared for lots of dancing, door prizes, and demonstrations. The cost for dancers is $5.00 each, and spectators may attend for free. If you are a owner or dance instructor, we encourage you and your students/members to attend and check out clogging. It is a true American folk dance. Also, any schoolteachers who teach PE-come check us out!

So much yarn; so little time. We have all heard that said many, many times. At The Lamb’s Loom, we know the feeling! All that pretty yarn--not to mention our little bits of leftovers--and what to do? Well, now that we have mentioned leftovers, let’s talk. By now you may have read right here in Welcome Home Winter Texan (or heard from a friend) about what happens at The Lamb’s Loom. As a nonprofit prayer shawl ministry, we collect all kinds of handmade items, from hats to blankets to scarves. Then we help 25+ mission groups--locally and all over the world. These groups serve so many people with basic needs. We are blessed to come alongside and provide a handmade item. It may not seem like much, but that gift represents care and concern in a tangible form. We call that “love in every stitch.” That tangible gift only happens because of the generous donations that are brought into The Lamb’s Loom and placed in our Donation Chest. We often get asked what is needed most. Well, we have learned over the years that God is in charge of distribution,
and all of these items will go to just the right spot. They most certainly will be loved and appreciated by the recipients.
So next time you see that little bit of scrap yarn in your basket that you can’t imagine what you can do with it, remember: Scraps make caps! And we will happily help find them their forever home!

Kansas Day Celebration 2025
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
January 29, 158 Kansans from all over the Rio Grande Valley met to commemorate the anniversary of the state’s January 29, 1861, admission to the Union. It was so special that 39 Kansans joined the group for their first time.
This year’s event took place at Peter Piper Pizza in Weslaco. We heard many positive comments about this venue--its central location within the Valley, and each person’s individual cost was much less than it was the last few years. This event also allowed more time available for getting to know your Kansas neighbor. What a happy crowd!
Jan Bergman, chair of the event, and Larry Schmitt, communications, facilitated the day’s events. Organizers also thank the Volunteers that facilitated registration and distributing the door prizes. Jan works hard throughout the year to accumulate the door prizes. We are also thankful to some of the attendees’ bringing a door prize.

Winter Green Estates, 500 N. Bryan Road in Mission, will hold its 2nd Annual Find-Your- Pot-of-Gold Flea Market Saturday, March 1. The Market opens at 7 a.m. and continues until noon. This spring sale benefits residents of Winter Green Estates and is put on strictly by resident volunteers. There will be no outside vendors, but the event is open to the public. The sale will be conducted both inside and outside of the Hall. Golf cart shuttles will also be available both to and from the hall. The Winter Green Estates Cafe will be open, with breakfast starting at 7 a.m. and lunch being served until 12:30 p.m. Those with a sweet tooth will be able to purchase a wide variety of homemade baked goods, including cookies, cakes, pies, bars, breads, rolls, and fudge. The Market will feature a wide variety of items.

Perspectives What Are They?

This morning, as I was sitting in my chair contemplating different ideas for this article, I found I was drawn to the title of this section of the newspaper…Perspectives. I began to wonder what people think when they see that word. What does that mean? Well, a simple definition would be, “a way of thinking about or viewing something or someone.” Many things can influence our perspective or our point of view--our past experiences, the belief systems we hold onto, our social environment, age, gender…I could go on and on. The truth is, as we all get older, our perspectives are influenced more and more by outside influences.
One thing we can all agree on is the more people we have in a room, the more perspectives we will have on any given topic or person. This can make for some interesting and sometimes humorous conversations. Also, unfortunately, it can also cause some unwanted, heated exchanges between those with varying perspectives. Living in a community with almost as many perspectives as people can come with many challenges. The biggest challenge we may have is that many want to impose their perspective on those around them, getting everyone to see things from their perspective. And the older we get oftentimes means the more set we get in our perspectives or ways. In order to make our time as Winter Texans more enjoyable (and peaceful), we need to learn to respect others’ perspectives. One of the best ways to accomplish this is to find some common ground, things we can agree on. Start to build a foundation of friendship around similar perspectives. Once you’ve done that, you need to be willing to change your perspective. You might think, how can I do that? Here are some suggestions:
1. Reframe- try to look at things differently.
2. Reflect - consider how your thoughts and actions affect those around you.
3. Be curious - ask questions and try to understand someone else’s perspective.
4. Be empathetic - put yourself in their shoes.
5. Be willing to change - keep an open mind.


If you are a believer, you have an enormous advantage in this. (Well, you should have.) When we gather together, we have a solid foundation in Jesus Christ. No matter where we come from or even what denomination we attend at home, our identity--who we are--should come from the fact that we are children of the Heavenly Father. Every interaction we have with someone is either they are my brother or sister in Christ or they are not, but regardless, I am told to love them. That should be our perspective. Eternity. When we gather on Sunday morning, I feel like I am seeing a glimpse into heaven. We not only have people from all walks of life but from many denominations, all gathered in one place to worship and praise The Lord. We are not nondenominational; we are multi-denominational. We are gathered as one, with one foundation, putting all things aside to focus on King Jesus. We look past all the differences and focus on the common core that is Jesus Christ. I want to challenge you. If you’re not participating in your park’s church, you are missing out on the one thing that could totally change your perspective-and your life. If your park doesn’t have a church, visit one near you that does. Don’t let your perspective keep you from stepping on the foundation. Philippians 4:8: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.” •

During a press conference at Bert Ogden Arena, ECC revealed an exciting musical lineup headlined by five-time Grammy Award Winner La Mafia, who will take the stage Saturday, March 1.

“We are thrilled to welcome La Mafia back to Edinburg, where they remain a community favorite,” said Ronnie Larralde, executive director of the ECC.
Joining the celebration is Alicia Villarreal, Latin-Grammy-Awardwinning regional Mexican artist and former lead singer of Grupo Límite. Villarreal will kick off the highly anticipated concert, delivering her signature hits for fans of all ages.
