That’s a lot of checks, but there’s still a lot more to do before you start heading home! If you visit welcomehomergv.com regularly, you know that. Our event calendar is so full of fun things to do that I often wonder how you decide. Do you do the ol’ eeny, meeny, miny, moe every day? Seriously, how do you choose?
If you haven’t checked out the Tours & Travel link on our site, there are still a few day tours left for this season that aren’t sold out yet. There are two Texas Gold Shrimp Boat Tours, one March 4 and the other March 5. The Gelman Stained Glass VIP Tour is March 6, and Tour the King Ranch is March 12. All of these are hugely popular, so if you haven’t been yet—or you went and want to go back—now’s your chance.
I still have more fun things to check off for the season, too, so here’s to hoping I see you soon!
We’re just connecting the dots…

Cruise with Kristi 2025: Above and Beyond
by Eryn Reddell Wingert
Photos courtesy of Welcome Home RGV Staff and Cathy Brydges
Milt Ellis, 86, lifted 15 tons of weight during the Cruise with Kristi 2025. Ellis lifts weights an hour each morning. He kept to his routine while aboard Royal Caribbean’s Jewel of the Seas earlier this month and tabulated how much he lifted.
Ellis and his wife, Helen, were part of a group from Eldorado Acres RV Park of Palmview, Texas, that took part in the cruise, hosted by Welcome Home RGV.
The 9th Annual Cruise with Kristi included transportation from the Rio Grande Valley to the Houston Marriott in Sugar Land, Texas, the day before boarding the ship at the Port of Galveston.
“They took care of everything,” says Ellis. “Getting on and off the bus, everything worked perfect.”
The nine-night cruise included stops in Costa Maya, Cozumel, and Yucanta, Mexico; George Town, Grand Cayman; and Falmouth, Jamaica.
Documenting the moments for the Eldorado Acres crew was Cathy Brydges. “We went out as a group at every port, and I got pictures at all of them.”
While Brydges engaged with stingrays in Grand Cayman and Ellis lifted weights in the ship’s fitness center, the Tours and Travel by Welcome Home Team stayed busy in the background, much like they did leading up to the trip.
Cruise with Kristi 2025 sold out last April. The staff has fielded calls and questions, held informational
meetings, and tended to each detail.
Each year, Welcome Home owner Kristi Collier is as surprised as she was the first. Collier is known to share that when the idea was initially posed, she thought (and said), “Who would want to cruise with me?!”
To her surprise and delight, hundreds of people have cruised with Kristi and her team over the past nine years.
For this trip, 242 people--five busloads of Winter and Converted Texans, among others--took advantage of the package deal.
“I wouldn’t be going if it weren’t for her and her crew,” shared Joyce Kerns of Winter Green Estates in
Mission--via Wisconsin. “They are so wonderful; they just take care of it all.”
Kerns lost her husband, Jerry, three months prior to the trip. The couple were married 61 “wonderful years,” and her friends encouraged her not to cancel. “I’m 80. I should probably be done cruising,” she said.
But she’s not done. Kerns is already booked for the 10th Annual Cruise with Kristi next February.
Kerns enjoyed all of the Cruise with Kristi ports of call, getting off the ship, walking around, and watching people. While not so much a Beatles fan, she says her favorite on-board experience was one of the Beatlesthemed shows.
Meanwhile, Ellis put those weight-lifting muscles to use by climbing the rock wall aboard the Jewel of the Seas, making it to the halfway mark at 20 feet and ringing the bell…twice!
“He put us all to shame!” Brydges joked.
Ellis says his arm was “twisted a bit” to even go on the cruise, but it didn’t take much. Friends suggested he and Helen go to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary this month.
Most of the Eldorado Acres group had rooms on the same deck, Ellis said. “If we were going to go do something, we’d bang on the doors down the line.”
And, to make new friends, the signature orange lanyards provided by Welcome Home were a good conversation starter, according to Brydges.
“It’s nice to have a group and have somebody take care of all the arrangements,” shared Brydges. “They went above and beyond.”
Tours and Travel by Welcome Home RGV is now booking Cruise with Kristi 2026, a seven-night cruise aboard Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas sailing out of Galveston, with ports of call in Costa Maya, Roatan, and Cozumel.
Round-trip ground transportation from the Rio Grande Valley and a pre-cruise overnight hotel stay are included. For more information, visit welcomehomergv. com or call 956-687-5115.

Patient Heart Recovery Reunion Scheduled at Harlingen Medical Center
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
APatient Heart Recovery Reunion event-featuring patients who have received a miniature heart pump, as well as Rio Grande Valley cardiologists who implanted the lifesaving devices--will be held Thursday, February 27, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the front lobby of Harlingen Medical Center, 5501 S. Expressway 77.
Heart patients and their families are invited to the free event, which will also feature food and refreshments, as well as educational information on heart disease and the Abiomed Impella® CP heart pump. The event is being held in conjunction with National Heart Month in February.
“We are thrilled to host this special celebration to honor our physicians and staff, innovative therapies, and, most importantly, our special patients,” said Kathleen Avila, regional director for business development for Harlingen Medical Center and Prime Healthcare hospitals in the Rio Grande Valley.
“Our hospital staff works tirelessly each day to turn unbelievable stories into reality,” Avila added. “Using innovative technology, like the Impella® heart pump, has allowed our teams to achieve
major successes.”
Cardiologists at Harlingen Medical Center have been utilizing the Impella® heart pump since 2015. The specialized device may benefit certain patients who have suffered heart failure or a heart attack and those whose heart needs help pumping blood while they undergo further treatment.
“The Impella® benefits our heart patients by supporting function of the heart muscle, allowing for further treatment, such as an angioplasty or stenting procedures to open blocked coronary arteries,” said Linda Bull, director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Harlingen Medical Center. “This is helping us save lives by providing our patients the temporary cardiac support needed to ensure optimal care.”
The heart pump is implanted through a less invasive method. A thin tube (catheter) is inserted through an artery in the leg and then moved up toward the chest and the heart, where the heart pump is implanted.
The device then pumps blood from the heart into the rest of the patient’s body, replicating the natural

Lakewood RV Resort Holds Annual Quilts of Valor Awarding Ceremony
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
Lakewood RV Resort held its annual Quilts of Valor Awarding Ceremony February 10. Ann Register served as ceremony coordinator. Pam Walden, Leona Huffaker, Karen Simon, Loretta Kruse, Ann Register, Mary Schaur, Dale Newton, and Darla Vaughn accepted responsibility for wrapping the quilts.
The Presentation of Colors was performed by George Dole, American Legion – La Feria. The invocation and benediction were delivered by Jim Lehman, former Quilt of Valor recipient and pastor at Lakewood. Pete Labzentis put in countless hours performing “service calls,” interviewing the recipients for the presentation of the quilts and detailing each veteran’s accomplishments and service medals earned. Musician Rusty Rierson performed the national anthem and “Good Morning Glory.”
This year, 10 veterans were awarded Quilts of Valor, seven from Lakewood and three from Sunwest Mobile Park, both in Harlingen. Those veterans are:
James E. Boynton – Navy
Sarge Richard Bush – Airforce
Richard B. Coffey - Airforce
Richard D. Daniels - Army
H. Bruce Duck – Navy
Leland B. Jaycox -Navy
Paul D. Kruse – Army
Lon D. Lefler – Army
Jerry Mattingly - Army
Joseph L. Perez – Marines
Donna Wright handled public relations for the event, Marlene Krzmarzick handled the décor, and Mary Ellen Swartz and Leona Huffaker arranged the luncheon and worked with their team of volunteers to provide a meal honoring the veterans. Approximately 100 people attended the event.
This was the third year Lakewood RV Resort hosted a Quilts of Valor Awarding Ceremony, and it has grown each year. This is a resident-run event. Without the work of all of the quiltmakers and volunteers and the support from Lakewood RV Resort, it would not be possible. •

Yarn Fun Happening…
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
…and y’all are welcome to join in! Our “winter” season is flying by, and we are all having a ton of yarn fun every day. It has been such a blessing to welcome back so many friends this year and meet new friends just joining in the yarn fun.
So what is going on at The Lamb’s Loom? We’re happy you asked! We have stuffed Knitted Knockers together and enjoyed show-n-tell. There is always someone sharing a great pattern idea or chiming in with another stitch we all want to learn. We have counted the Donation Chest that is filled up every week with so many lovely handmade gifts. Our classroom is full of fiber fun, and the Sit-n-Knit areas are full of fiber friends.
This past year, our Donation Chest just kept overflowing, and we are so grateful. In total, there were 5,604 items made, donated, and then sent out to over 20 mission groups all over the world. Helping these groups serve and encourage others, with a little warmth wrapped up in a yarn hug, is an amazing blessing to be a part of every day. So, to answer your question, it all knits up together to become our wonderful “Happy Place,” and we hope you will come and spend a little sit-n-knit time with us before you head back up north.
If it all sounds like fun and you do not knit or crochet, come on over and take a Learn-To Class with us. Those are fun, too. We love sharing time in class and helping others begin their fiber-loving journey. It is never too late to add a little yarn fun to your life. Then, next year, we will be blessed to welcome back a fiber friend to another fun season of sit-n-knit time together. And the yarn party continues! Before the season ends here in South Texas, come stitch it forward with us. We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Lamb’s Loom is located at 1102 W. Tamarack Ave. in McAllen. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. Updates and other information are available on our website at thelambsloom.com. •

Lotería + Fundraiser = LOTs of FUN
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
You don’t have to live in the Rio Grande Valley long to learn about lotería and how much fun it can be. “Lotería,” the Spanish word for “lottery,” is actually similar to bingo. Instead of drawing numbered balls, the caller draws from a deck of cards. Each card has a picture, the name of the object or person on the picture, and a number. Unlike bingo, though, the lotería number is usually of little significance.
Most people think the lotería cards themselves add to the fun of playing. Some of the more popular cards are LA SIRENA, the mermaid; EL DIABLITO, the little devil; EL BORRACHO, the drunk guy; LA LUNA, a beautiful, feminine moon; and EL CORAZON, the heart.
When the caller announces the card that is drawn, players see if they have the matching picture on their individual lotería board (much like a bingo card). Don’t worry if you don’t know Spanish. Others will help, and you will learn them quickly. Like in bingo, you can use tokens to mark your matches; however, groups often use beans, instead.
Whether you are a lotería expert or a first-timer, you are invited to play to raise money for the McAllen ISD International Baccalaureate Senior Class PSI Pinning. The IB Pinning Ceremony is a formal event held each year for seniors. The IB staff pins the graduates, symbolically marking their completion of the intellectual-exploration and critical-thinking journey they are about to officially complete.
The Lotería Fundraiser for this year’s IB Senior Class Pinning Ceremony is Saturday, March 1, at Tacos El Plebe, 1017 N. Main St. in McAllen, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $25 and includes three lotería boards, a delicious Tacos El Plebe lunch plate, and a soda. Payment is on-site only, the day of the event. Don’t be late, or you’ll miss out on some of the fun!
Great prizes. Great food. And LOTs of FUN! For more information, contact Erica at 956-867-5065. •
Perspectives Be Ye Kind One to Another
by Janette Bridgeman
We all have pet peeves, certain things that bother us more than the average, things that seem worth fighting for. Honestly, I’m guilty of making a big deal (getting upset) over something seemingly trivial to the next person. But what people don’t always know is what drives my feelings about the subject. In my case, due to my physical limitations, it can be distressing to be skipped in line, causing a delay. When normally I would just wait patiently while others go ahead of me, recently I found it extremely upsetting to be delayed because I was in physical pain waiting for several other people to go ahead of me in a line. After some confrontation--and also seeking God’s help--I got to thinking about showing kindness to others. We never know what a person might be going through. That lady in line might be hurting while standing there. That man who cut you off in traffic could have just lost his spouse. That person who didn’t show up at the function last night might have received bad news from home. It’s not all about you! We live in a society of people who think, “Why should I care about anyone but myself?” It’s an epidemic. What if we try a little tenderness and choose to be kind, even when it’s not reciprocated? In God’s word, He teaches us to love our enemies; showing the God-kind of love to people is the best example of a Christian (ones who are Christ-like) that I know. Too many people have been turned off by Christianity because they feel judged, not loved. Yet the Bible clearly states we ought to love our neighbor as ourselves. Let God’s love shine through you the next time you have a choice. Choose kindness. Choose love.
”For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners
also love those that love them. And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same... But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.“ Luke 6:3233, 35 KJV

A Sweet Encounter with TinkerBell and The Black Widow
Submitted by Manny Rodriguez of Vinyl Spin
There’s something magical about the unexpected connections we make through music, and this past performance brought a story that will stay with us for a long time.
During one of our sets, a sweet older woman approached Annie, our very own “Black Widow,” and asked her name. When Annie introduced herself, the woman immediately smiled and said, “Oh, like Little Orphan Annie or Raggedy Ann!” That comment sparked a heartfelt conversation. Annie shared that she’s always loved Raggedy Ann dolls and even collects them.
Tinkerbell Disappeared and Returned With a Surprise
The woman, who introduced herself as TinkerBell (Yes, really!), disappeared for a while. We didn’t think much of it…until she returned during our second break. And what did she bring? A beautiful Raggedy Ann doll!
TinkerBell told Annie that she had purchased the doll years ago at an estate sale and had held onto it ever since. But something about Annie made her want to give it away, and she knew it would be cherished. It was an incredibly touching moment. Annie was moved by the gesture and absolutely loved the doll. It’s not every day you meet someone who shares a part of their story--or their treasures--so freely. While chatting with the rest of the band, TinkerBell mentioned she had really enjoyed our set, especially when we played “House of the Rising Sun.” She couldn’t stop talking about how much she loved that song. It turns out that music wasn’t the only thing keeping her young at heart.
TinkerBell, at 89 years old, looked incredible, radiating joy, kindness, and a spirit that left an impression on all of us. We made sure to capture the moment with a photo and shared some laughs before parting ways.
Why We Do What We Do
Moments like these are why we do what we do. Music brings people together, but it’s the stories and connections that make the experience truly special. Annie’s new Raggedy Ann doll now holds even more meaning, and we’ll always remember our sweet encounter with TinkerBell.
Here’s to the beautiful connections that music brings and the kindness that lives in unexpected moments. •
