Records indicate that as many as 30 million people per week tuned in to The Lawrence Welk Show during its peak. Those who did—in your own homes or with parents and grandparents—surely remember the signature tune at the end of each show, “Adios, Au revoir, Auf Wiedersehn,” music by George Cates and lyrics by Jack Elliott.
Good night, good night, until we meet again Adios, Au revoir, Auf Wiedersehn ‘til then. And though it’s always sweet sorrow to part You know you’ll always remain in my heart.
Good night, sleep tight, and pleasant dreams to you.
Here’s a wish and a prayer that every dream comes true.
And now ‘til we meet again, Adios, Au Revoir, Auf Wiedersehn.
Goodnight!
I hope you can hear me humming this tune (You probably wouldn’t enjoy hearing me sing it) to all of you as you prepare to head to your summer homes. This is our final paper for the 20242025 season, but you’ll be back—and we’ll be back—before you know it.
Until then, Adios, Au Revoir, Auf Wiedersehn! Safe travels. Thank you for spending the season with us. It sure wouldn’t be the same without you!
We’re just connecting the dots…
WINTER TEXAN
How to Be a Winter Texan
by Eryn Reddell Wingert
by Welcome Home RGV Team
Welcome Home RGV is all about promoting the Rio Grande Valley to Winter Texas. The RGV has been welcoming winter visitors since the 1920s. So how does one become a Winter Texan?
Dozens of cities and small towns make up the Rio Grande Valley, from the tip of Texas at Brownsville to historic Rio Grande City, all along the Rio Grande. And there are hundreds of RV parks, resorts, and communities open to seasonal visitors.
But, where to start? Our website, welcomehomergv.com, is a one-stop shop, if you will, to not only plan your visit but also to make the most out of your stay. Let’s take a tour.
First stop, the home page, offering quick links and visitor information. Then, check out About Us to see the faces of the Team, experts at connecting Winter Texans directly to all things RGV.
Next stop, Classifieds. Customize a search for local real estate, or click on Where to Stay to find the perfect fit to suit your lifestyle--RV park/resort, longor short-term hotel, 55+ community, or independent living. At welcomehomergv.com/where-to-stay/ , we’ve got you covered.
Not sure what place might be right for you? Click “Complete our area information request” and, as the site indicates, “We’ll be happy to help!”
Once you have established where you will spend a few weeks--or months--next winter, it’s time to plan your activities and build an RGV Bucket List. That’s where the website’s Event Calendar and Tours & Travel sections come into play.
Welcome Home RGV’s Event Calendar is long…very long…covering seasonal and year-round activities to suit any interest.
There are yard sales galore; local museum and art
gallery exhibits; a variety of speaker series; community, university, and high school theatrical productions; river and bay cruises; crafting and market days; happy hours, dances, and karaoke; 5Ks, nature walks, and better health programs; and the event list covers the 121 miles from South Padre Island to Rio Grande City.
Casually scroll for something fun and new or filter your search by category, location, cost, and/or timeframe.
If you are still left with questions--like how to stay active during your visit--that very question was posed to members of Welcome Home’s private group page: Winter Texans RGV (Welcome Home RGV).
Top answers included dancing, walking, golf, bicycling, swimming, pickleball, shuffleboard, and happy hour outside with friends. A few other responses: corn hole, 8 ball pool, playing music, water volleyball, yoga/pilates, and gym/weights.
But, there’s so much more! Many of the RV parks host a variety of clubs and groups, with various interests like geology clubs, clog dancing, and drone operating.
Welcome Home RGV recognizes that the modern-day Winter Texan wants to go, see, and do!

Gain further insight into what goes on in the Valley during Winter Texan season by flipping through archived publications--available on our website--showcasing a variety of topics, such as visitor profiles and local history, culture, organizations, and events.
Bottom line: Whether you plan to be a short-term visitor or are considering spending the winter in South Texas, Welcome Home RGV takes the guess work out of planning your visit. All you have to do is hop on our website and show up! •

This resaca is located in the remnants of the Jagou Plantation in Brownsville. This is the view from the historic Jagou Bridge, built in the late 1800s. A palm jungle with Montezuma Cypress lines the resaca’s banks. According to visitbtx.com, this small patch of landscape represents what the plantation looked like at the turn of the last century. The resaca is located behind La Posada Park, 1363 La Posada Drive, in Southmost Brownsville.
Things I Have Learned A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy
by Bill Ward
See Me
Today’s Wisdom: I’m not a crabby old woman. Look closer. See me.
~Phyllis McCormack
Most of you know I was in the field of long-term care for many years. One of the observations I had during those years was how people who were our customers changed. When we first met them, on the day of admission, they were strangers in broken bodies who needed care. We were pretty good at providing care, so we saw them first as professional challenges.
Then, after a few weeks--sometimes after just a few days--they changed. They magically turned into real people, people with feelings, dreams, laughter, emotions, opinions, and stories. Some even became friends.
I suppose it is not accurate to say they changed. It was actually us who changed, as we accumulated experience that allowed us to switch from seeing what they looked like to seeing who they were. They had never not been real people; we just had no exposure in the early hours to their full depth and breadth.
It is fun to meet new folks and discover the full essence of their person. But I wonder how many times, over a lifetime, we miss the opportunity to do that. Do we tend to stop at the first impression? Do we assume that what they look like equals who they are?
Back in my professional years, I used a poem during a number
of speaking engagements. It is called The Crabbit Old Woman by Phyllis McCormack. The last lines are:
I’m an old woman now and nature is cruel-Tis her jest to make old age look like a fool. The body is crumbled, grace and vigor depart, There is now a stone where I once had a heart, But inside this old carcass, a young girl still dwells,
And now and again my battered heart swells, I remember the joy, I remember the pain, And I’m loving and living life over again.
I think of the years all too few--gone too fast. And accept the stark fact that nothing can last-So open your eyes, open and see, Not a crabbit old woman, look closer.
See me.
I think we ourselves become more real to others when we are able to move from seeing what to seeing who.
I’m just sayin’. •
Be Kind, Do Good, Make a Difference
Submitted by Karen Stiles, Paradise Resort Estates
Friday, February 21, Paradise Resort Estates, 301 E. Hall Acres Road in Pharr held its annual Community Outreach Spaghetti Dinner and Charity Auction.
The Rec Hall was packed with over 300 residents and guests. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the spaghetti dinner with salad and garlic bread. Dessert consisted of a variety of pies and squares, all donated by our Paradise residents. The cost was a free-will donation, collected at the door.
Following supper and cleanup, the live auction began, with two professional and resident auctioneers. Items for the Brown Bag, Silent, and Live auctions were donated by the Paradise community. The Live Auction ran for almost 2.5 hours and was great fun. As usual, some of the fabulous baked goods brought in some of the highest prices!
In total, $10,930.00 was raised. These funds were split evenly by four charities that were voted on by our Community Outreach members. The first was Family Ministries, which is located near downtown Pharr. Members of our Outreach Committee volunteer at their Food Bank weekly. The second was St Vincent de Paul, another local charity where several of our members volunteer in the kitchen and collect donations for the Thrift Shop. The third, Linus Project, is an in-Paradise organization that creates quilts for local charities, schools, and service clubs. In 2024, they donated 1,833 quilts! This year to date, they have already created and donated over 300 quilts. The final recipient was also an in-Paradise project that came under our Neighbors Helping Neighbors Program. Several years ago, the members of the Community Outreach Committee installed--and

still maintain—a medical supply shed in Paradise Resort, which is accessible to anyone who needs a walker, a wheelchair, crutches, and other medical equipment. The shed is in need of being relocated and updated.
This event is the largest charity fundraiser the Community Outreach Committee runs during the Winter Texan season, but other events that help our local community include a Teddy Bear Tea, with stuffed bears being donated to the Pharr Police Department for tender-age victims. At Christmas, socks and underwear are collected for distribution to local churches. A Mitten Tree is set up in the Hall with the age and sex of local children in need so residents can purchase gifts for them. The Annual In-Park Poker Run raises funds for Runn Elementary in Donna, which also receives donations of school uniforms and school supplies throughout the winter season. Glasses are collected for the Lions Recycle for Sight project. Pop tabs are collected for the Ronald McDonald House at South Texas Health System Children’s in Edinburg. Committee members go to local ropas (used clothing stores) on a regular basis to collect suitable clothing for children and adults, which they then bring home to launder and repair before donation. Throughout the season, members collect and donate to our Shoes for Kids program; the shoes are then donated to local charities.
The Paradise Resort Community Outreach Committee members love to give back to the local community that has made us all feel so welcome. As a past Committee chair used to say, “Be kind! Do good! Make a difference!” •
Hello Travel Friends
Hello Travel Friends Looking Ahead: Tours and Travel Next Season
The last few weeks have been full of phone calls, emails, and in-person questions about what tours we’re doing next year. I’m happy you all are excited and loving these trips! I wanted to give you a little sneak peak into some new adventures coming next season.
For those of you Converted Texans, or people who arrive a little earlier than the official Winter Texan season, I have a fall trip you won’t want to miss! We’re kicking off the season with a Haunted Galveston three-day, four-night tour. This will be in late October and will be full of ghost tours, haunted stories, and all kinds of spooky fun. This will be a one-bus trip and will likely sell out quickly If bus trips are something you’re looking for, we’ll also have multi-day overnights to Fredericksburg and San Antonio. This year’s trip to Fredericksburg was so much fun, and we can’t
wait to do it again with an extra day and a few more fun things to explore! San Antonio is another highly requested destination, with a lot of fun to be had downtown by the Riverwalk, learning about--and touring--the missions and enjoying other fun local cuisine and attractions. You won’t want to miss this fun adventure, either.
If day trips are something you’d like to add to your calendar, we’ll have trips all around South Texas you can look into. From Valley favorites like Rocket Ranch and the VIP Gelman Stained Glass luncheon to longer day trips to King Ranch and Corpus Christi, we have something for everyone. Taking a day trip is easy to fit in your schedule and a great way to meet new friends and spice up your weekly agenda. Keep an eye out for new places we’ll offer, as well.
When it comes to cruising, you can’t beat the ease of hopping on a bus in the Valley and letting us do all the work for you! Our Christmas 2025
Land and Sea tour is sold out for this year, but we’ll do the same trip in 2026 if you want to mark your calendar now. We’ll also be offering a fun girls’ trip--short-cruise itinerary--in April 2026 and our large Cruise with Kristi is filling up fast! Everyone wants to know how and when they can book all this fun. The answer to both questions is to keep an eye on our website at welcomehomergv. com. This is the best place to see what’s new and get your name on the lists the quickest. We will be updating these trips and others in the next month or so. Look ahead on your calendar and get them booked as soon as you see them for the best price and the best chance to get signed up before they’re sold out.
Head home safely and come back ready to have some vacation fun with us. Drive safely, and I’ll see you soon, Travel Friends! •

A Fan’s Gift
How a young girl’s drawing reminded us of the power of music and connection
Submitted by Manny Rodriguez of Vinyl Spin
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
As musicians and music educators, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing people connect with our music and our journey. Recently, we had a heartfelt moment with a young fan, reminding us just how powerful those connections can be.
At one of our performances, a little girl, Andrea, walked up to us, beaming with excitement. In her hands was a hand-drawn picture of our Vinyl Spin logo, carefully crafted with all the details that make it special. Seeing her creativity and enthusiasm left us absolutely blown away.
Andrea’s dedication touched us so much that we knew we had to do something meaningful in return. After chatting with her and her father, we asked if she would be willing to let us keep her artwork. She happily agreed, and we promised to frame it and display it in our studio, where it would serve as a daily reminder of the incredible connection we share with our friends and supporters.
Her drawing is more than just a piece of art; it’s a symbol of the love and support we receive from all of you. It reinforces why we pour our hearts into every performance, every song, and every moment on stage.
To Andrea and to everyone who joins us on this musical journey, we want to say thank you. Your support, energy, and love mean the world to us. We couldn’t do this without you, and we will continue to create music that speaks to your hearts and souls. See you at the next show! •

Perspectives Protection for the Trip Home
by Mark Bridgeman
In my past career as an over-the-road truck driver, I made several trips from Texas to Colorado. One time I got a load going to Grand Junction, Colorado, and I’d never been west of Denver.
On the day I headed west out of Denver, it had snowed the night before. As I drove that day, it was overcast in the morning; around noon, the sun came out, and it warmed up a little bit, starting to melt the ice. At the higher altitudes, there were still five or six inches of ice on the roads, in places.
As I continued, I traveled through the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel at 65 miles an hour. I came out of the west side of the tunnel in the right lane and hit a solid sheet of ice! The left lane was packed with motorists passing me. As I continued, the road started to go downhill. Every time I touched my break, the drive axles on the tractor would lock up, and the truck would start to jackknife. There was no shoulder, so there was no option but to keep going. With my heavy load (nearly 80,000 pounds gross), the truck began to increase in speed and--because of the ice--I was unable to break to slow the vehicle. Every so often, there was a section of about two truck lengths that was plowed. Being a Christian, I prayed, “Lord, I’m going to have to have your help to save me and all the others on this road
today!” I knew if I wrecked, I would’ve taken a lot of innocent people with me. There would’ve been no way to stop it.
When I cried out to God, He told me that when you get to the places that have been plowed, lock the brakes down on the rig. When the rig begins to jackknife, let off the brakes and keep doing this every time you come to a dry patch, and I will help you get down this hill. So that’s what I did! That was the longest 12 miles of my life, but when I finally got to the bottom, I found a place to pull off and took a break to thank God for saving me and everyone else on the road that day. The people who drove behind me never knew how close they came to losing their lives, but the Lord was with me and loved all of us. He helped me, and by doing so, He protected all of us.
I cannot overstate how important it is to know Jesus as your Savior, Helper, and Friend. With the Winter Texan season ending and many of you heading home, remember that Jesus is the friend who sticks closer than a brother. Put your faith and trust in Him, and He will guide you home safely and provide the help you need to get there. Trust in God, and do not lean on your own understanding. Have a safe trip…our ministry will be praying for you. •

Lambs Loom Thank You, Friends
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
As this season winds down for y’all, we wish you safe travels home. It has been “wondermous” to spend time with so many of you this year. We hope you know how much you are appreciated by so many people here in South Texas. It is a better place because of how much of yourselves you pour into this little corner of the world. Volunteering to help in so many ways is a real blessing to all of us.
Here at The Lamb’s Loom, we are continually grateful for all of our Winter Texan friends. You volunteer here during the “winter” and keep it up when you are back home by working up handmade items for our Donation Chest all year-round! We love receiving so many boxes in the mail from our friends up north, full of hats and hugs, and the bags of your handmade gifts that are brought to us--in person-when you come back. We know these all go to bless and encourage others; they give a hug where it is needed and put a smile on people’s faces and in their hearts. For those of you who give financially, thank you for helping us keep the lights on.
To all of our new friends who found us this year,
welcome! We are glad you found our Sit-n-Knit-home of our Happy Place--and we hope you will put us on your calendar of “field trips” for next year.
To all of you: a very special thank you from all of the mission groups we work with. In 2024, over 5,600 items were sent out across the world to our various mission groups--to hurricane victims in North Carolina (where we sent over 400 hats) and to other mission groups in several states across Mexico and here in the U.S. recovering from natural disasters during the past year. There were hats given at a Veterans Home, blankets given to our local homeless shelters, and so much more. We are blessed to hear stories of encouragement given to someone in the form of a shawl, comfort provided to a family with warm hats, and joy bestowed upon a sweet child in the form of a new blanket. It’s all God passing out love and hugs in every stitch. We hope you will stay in touch over the summer with updates and other information available on our website at thelambsloom.com Safe travels home • ~ Prayers ‘n Purls from all of us here at The Lamb’s Loom
