Can you feel it? Yes, it’s already February, and love is in the air. Over the years, there has been a bit of a shift in the traditional focus of Valentine’s Day. Now we hear about Galentine’s and Puppy Love, too. It never hurts to focus on love, does it?
Speaking of love…I think you’re going to love Eryn’s Valentine’s story about Joyce and Jimmy Hansen as much as I do. It has “Hallmark” written all over it.
Check out Eryn’s story about our annual Bayside Fiesta at Louie’s Backyard on South Padre Island, too. It was sold out again, and those who attended say they didn’t want all the fun to end. Be sure to watch our Facebook page to get your tickets for next year as soon as they go on sale. You don’t want to end up with fomo (fear of missing out), do you?
Speaking of sold out, the 2025 Cruise with Kristi did it again. It sold out in April…of 2024! Oh, what fun it was. We just returned February 10, but there’s no time to rest. We take advantage of every minute all of you are in the Rio Grande Valley. If you don’t want to miss a thing, cruise over to welcomehomergv.com and check out our calendar and our tours and travel and follow us on Facebook and Instagram.
Hope to see you all soon! Happy Love Day!
We’re just connecting the dots…
WINTER TEXAN
A Love Story Set to Music
by Eryn Reddell Wingert
Photos courtesy of Joyce and Jimmy Hansen
She had been a pastor’s wife; his weekends were spent playing music in bars. She loves the dance floor; he was used to the stage. But a mutual love of music--and a God wink--brought Joyce and Jimmy Hansen together.
Missouri seemed colder the winter after Joyce’s husband, Larry, passed away. She wanted to be where it was warm, so she returned to the Rio Grande Valley where they had spent time together.
In February 2018, Joyce attended a dance at Tip O’Texas RV Resort in Pharr. She sat on the singles side of the hall.
Jimmy was there, and when a mutual friend, Sharon Kenaston, told him he might want to go ask that little widow lady to dance--pointing out Joyce--he didn’t hesitate.
“I made a beeline over to ask her,” Jimmy recalls. Joyce looked up and saw what she described as “the perfect cowboy.”
Steven May was playing that night. Jimmy and Joyce danced to one song, something like George Straight’s “Amarillo by Morning,” and Jimmy sang to her.
They also talked. He told her he was from Nebraska.
Joyce admitted she wasn’t a fan because it’s flat, but Jimmy bragged about the hills around his house, which intrigued her. He didn’t know anything about Kirksville, where Joyce lived.
“I must have made an impression,” says Joyce because he invited her to the Riverside Club in

Mission, where he would be performing later that week
Jimmy was on stage when she walked in. When he saw her, he was pleasantly surprised. “I really didn’t think she would show.”
They talked more during his break and even danced a waltz. He didn’t know how, so she showed him. Sharon called out from the stage, “Good luck, Joyce!”
“You know,” Joyce recalled “he did pretty good.” She taught him to waltz; in turn, he swept her off her feet.
Their differences seemed to outweigh their similarities, including their music preferences. Joyce sings and writes gospel songs; Jimmy sang and played rhythm guitar in a country band. But they each adapted in various ways, and their mutual love of music binds them.
“We just always knew we were going to be together,” says Joyce. And a year after they met, they made it official--at a country-themed wedding at Quiet Village II in Donna, where they both sang to each other during the ceremony.
Joyce wrote these lyrics for Jimmy: “You stole my heart as you gazed into my eyes, and your arms wrapped me close as we danced. You laughed and sang, and I knew one thing. You were part of God’s amazing plan.”
Jimmy, who readily admits he wasn’t a churchgoer before meeting Joyce, sang Tracy Byrd’s “Keeper of the Stars,” a song that references God’s hand in bringing a couple together.
It’s their differences that make it interesting. He appreciates how good she is with people. “If anyone is down or dying, she’s right there to talk with them.” She appreciates his humor and affectionate and easy-going nature.
The couple spends time at Jimmy’s farm in Nebraska. Joyce has even started a garden there and has come around to liking the Sandhills. And when Jimmy is not farming, they spend time near her family in Missouri.
In the Valley, it’s all about music--taking part in jam sessions, going to dances, and even putting on gigs themselves--dances and block parties.
This month marks the Hansens’ sixth wedding anniversary. Joyce says it’s gone by fast. “We’re living the good life,” Joyce shares. “We really are--together.” •

Winter Texan Spotlight Bayside Fiesta Music Festival
by Eryn Reddell Wingert
Louie’s Backyard on South Padre Island is home to a giant outdoor deck overlooking the Laguna Madre Bay, with the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway and Port Isabel marking the horizon. It’s an incredible spot to enjoy a meal and a cocktail, as brown pelicans skim the water and the two-milelong Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway on the horizon.
One particular Wednesday in January (January 29, to be exact), the deck was packed with about 400 people, approximately 100 of whom were from one RV park. One attendee was 99 years old.
They began lining up outside that morning at 9:30, eager for the doors to open an hour later.
Just inside the entrance, Welcome Home RGV staff readied to take tickets for the pre-sale-only event: the 3rd Annual Bayside Fiesta Music Festival.
“I loved seeing faces from last year’s event,” said coordinator Anne Marie Martin, who also enjoyed seeing all the dancing.
One main dance floor was established in front of the large, elevated stage, but Martin says people were dancing all over, even forming three other dance zones. “They were having a blast!”
Blue skies and sunshine were overhead, as acts popular amongs the Winter Texan community took to the stage. The Night Howlers, Jason Whorlow, The Warman Trio, Julia Cooper, Ron Moshier, and Curt James (who also emceed the festival) got the crowd up on their feet and out on the nearest dance floor.
“The weather was perfect for a day of music and fun!” Martin said.
Meanwhile, beverages and lunch baskets—with a choice of ribs, fish, shrimp, or chicken--were served by the wait staff at Louie’s Backyard.
Martin promises next year’s event, scheduled for January 28, 2026, will be just as much fun and will include fun WinterTexan-themed merchandise. •
Spotted in the RGV Harlingen, Texas
by Eryn Reddell Wingert
Elvis has been spotted in downtown Harlingen. One of the many murals in the area, Elvis--along with Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles--are part of a series on Rock ‘n Roll history. This mural is located on S. “A” Street at the intersection with Jackson Street in the downtown area. In recent years, the City of Harlingen has expanded its public art displays. Downtown Harlingen is home to over 20 colorful scenes. For a map of the area’s murals, go to visitharlingentexas.com.

La Floresta Hosts Couples Golf Tournament
January 18, La Floresta RV Resort near Mercedes had a Couples Par 3 Golf Tournament. There were two categories, gross score and net score. If it was the first time playing in this tournament, the couples had to sign up for gross score, as they would not have established a handicap yet. If they had a handicap, the couple could choose their category. If the couple chose net score, they subtracted their handicap from their 18-hole score.
The La Floresta Couples Part 3 Golf Tournament celebrated two new winners this year. The winner of the lowest gross score runs the tournament the following year and receives a plaque donated by the previous year’s winners; this year’s plaque was donated by Jim Monier and Darla Strait. The 2025 gross winners were Murray and Pat Pratt. Net score winners were Dan Streff and Bonnie Kadell. Congratulations! •

Be Mine (Check Yes or No)
by Suzie York
Growing up in the 70s and 80s in rural Missouri, I listened to a lot of country music on the radio. I knew all the lyrics by heart. “Lookin’ for love in all the wrong places.” “Do you love me? Do you wanna be my friend? Check Yes or No.” Country songs often are written about love. Love gone bad. Love that got away. Occasionally, there is one about true love, but those songs often don’t end well, either.
Love is complicated. Somebody even wrote a song named “Love Stinks”! Everyone wants to show love and be loved by others. The Bible tells us that God is love. In fact, the Bible is often referred to as “God’s Love Letter.” Have you ever written a love letter? Did you give it to them? Did they open it? Did they read it? Did they read again and again…slowly, pondering each word? How did they respond to the words you poured out from your heart? Have you ever read God’s Love Letter (the Bible) to you? Do you remember reading the parts that say,
“You may not know me, but I know everything about you.” - Psalm 139:1
“I knew you even before you were conceived.” - Jeremiah 1:4-5
“I chose you when I planned creation.” - Ephesians 1:11-12
“You were not a mistake, for all your days are written in my book.” - Psalm 139:15-16
“I knit you together in your mother’s womb.” - Psalm 139:13
“I determined the exact time of your birth and where you would live.” - Acts 17:26
“And brought you forth on the day you were born” - Psalm 71:6
“I am not distant and angry but am the complete expression of love.” - 1 John 4:16
“And it is my desire to lavish my love on you.” - 1 John 3:1
“Simply because you are my child and I am your Father.” - 1 John 3:1
“Because I love you with an everlasting love.”Jeremiah 31:3
“My thoughts toward you are countless as the sand on the seashore.” - Psalm 139:17-18
“And I rejoice over you with singing.” - Zephaniah 3:17
“I am your Father, and I love you even as I love my son, Jesus.” - John 17:23
“For in Jesus, my love for you is revealed.” - John 17:26
“He is the exact representation of my being.”Hebrews 1:3
“He came to demonstrate that I am for you, not against you.” - Romans 8:31
“His death was the ultimate expression of my love for you.” - 1 John 4:10
“I gave up everything I loved that I might gain your love.” - Romans 8:31-32
Here’s another song from the past: “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” This Valentine’s, Jesus asks you, “BE MINE.” Will you check yes or no? •

The Lamb’s Loom Hug a Shepherd Week
As an all-volunteerrun nonprofit organization, these stitchers get it done, and we are so very grateful. We call our volunteers “shepherds,” and this amazing group of ladies gets it all done around here. Their enthusiasm for serving others sets them apart. Everything--every stitch, as it were--somehow goes through a shepherd’s hands. They sort and count our Donation Chest, they make the coffee, they sweep the floors…and all of that before we open, Then they greet y’all at the door!
Ten years ago, when The Lamb’s Loom began, there were only three shepherds. Now we have 20 sheps shepherding. When you enter The Lamb’s Loom, our Sit-n-Knit Room will usually have friends hanging out--stitching and sharing a few stories, there may be a few classes happening, and there’s always yarn fun going on. What you do not see are all of the hours they put in to make
things happen. There’s shelving to be done, boxes to be put together and mailed out to various mission groups…there’s just a lot going on. To borrow a hashtag, #thesegirlsrock So if you’re out and about this week, stop by and hug a shepherd! And while you’re at it, ask how you can join in the yarn fun and stitch it forward with us.
Lamb’s Loom fun is happening, in person, at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen. Come join us as we #stitchitforward together. We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. Life’s Tapestry: Art and Words
The Festival of International Books and Arts (FESTIBA) was established in 2006 to promote the importance of literacy, culture and the arts to students, parents, educators, and community members throughout the Rio Grande Valley. The Arts, in all their enchanting forms, have the ability to transport us to different realms and ignite our imagination.
FESTIBA 2024-2025 will explore the theme of Life’s Tapestry: Art and Words. One of the most captivating aspects of poetry is its use of imagery. Through vivid descriptions and sensory details,
poets and musicians paint pictures in our minds, allowing us to experience the essence of their sounds and words. Imbuing life with colors, sounds, smells, tastes, and touch, Arts and Words offer a window into the rich tapestry of life.

How were the lives of ordinary people affected by the events of the American Revolutionary War? Alamo Police, Fire Departments Enjoy Racing at Winter Gardens Raceway
by Linda Sauer
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
For the third straight year, Winter Gardens Raceway in Winter Ranch RV Resort, located on State Highway 495 in Alamo, hosted the Alamo Police and Fire Departments and Alamo city dignitaries Saturday, January 25, in a racing competition with radio-controlled cars. Race cars were provided courtesy of New Sun Racing and several Raceway Club members, including two custom trucks--one a red truck with Alamo Fire Department decals and the other a blue truck with Alamo Police Department decals.
After the opening prayer and National Anthem, driver introductions were made, and Winter Ranch Manager Mark Foster voiced appreciation for the services the City of Alamo and the Alamo Police and Fire Departments provide to residents of Winter Ranch.
Following a few practice laps, police and fire personnel competed against each other in 10-lap races, with the top two finishers moving on to the Feature Race. Drivers were clocked with a radar gun, and speeds ranged from 31 to 40 mph, driving radio-controlled race cars that are 1/10 scale electric vehicles with transponders that tie into the track’s computer lap counter system.
In the Department Match heat, Alamo Police Captain Rudy Garza finished first, with Alamo Fire Chief RC Flores coming in second and Alamo City Commissioner Roel Moreno finishing third. Then Alamo Police Department husband and wife Joshua and Adriana competed in a Grudge Match to see who would be doing dishes and laundry for the next year.
Police Lieutenant Adriana Cano and Police Officer Joshua Sanchez with one of the race cars.
Race announcer Fred Sauer gives Rodolfo Garza III, the young son of Police Captain Rudy Garza, tips on how to use the hand held controller.
The Feature Race was won by Police Captain Rudy Garza, with Police Lieutenant Adriana Cano finishing second and Fire Chief RC Flores third. Other special guests included Alamo City Commissioner Pete Morales and Alamo Police Captain Rudy Garza’s young son (complete with police uniform), who was enthralled with learning how to drive an RC car.
Winter Gardens’ remote-control racetrack, designed and built by residents of Winter Ranch and Trophy Gardens, is a state-of-the-art 1/10 scale model of Nascar’s Kansas Speedway, with 11-degree banking in the corners. The track is 15 ft. wide and a total of 135 ft in length, with guardrails, an infield, and a 70ft straightaway. The track complex includes a sound system, a covered race car pit area, covered driver and spectator stands, a golf cart spectator terrace, and a concession stand, where hamburger- and hotdog meals are sold, with picnic tables for dining. Complimentary meals were served to the police and fire crews, along with visiting city dignitaries.
Thanks goes to the many Winter Gardens Raceway volunteers who contributed to the day’s success, including--but not limited--to Winter Ranch Manager Mark Foster; Winter Ranch Chaos Coordinator Bob Coakley; Race Director Brad Huff; Raceway Club President Dale West; Track Announcer Fred Sauer; Infield Marshals Shirley Kleve, Bob Babler, Randy Lemasters, Stu Sheel, and Tim Schmuck; Race Coordinator Linda Sauer; and Weenie World concession volunteers Larry and Paula Dyer, Audrey Huff, Jesse Chapin, and Jim Thomas. Thanks also to Leon Green, who loaned out his race car and helped educate drivers.
RC Car races at Winter Gardens Raceway are typically held on Wednesday afternoons from November through March and are open to drivers from all Wilder parks. •
Police and Fire personel, along with Alamo City Commissioner Roel Moreno, pose with Winter Gardens volunteers during driver introductions.
Special truck bodies were provided for the race...a red one depicting the Alamo Fire Department and a blue one for the Alamo Police Department.
Winter Gardens Raceway is a 1/10th replica of Kansas Speedway with 11 degree banking in the corners.
Spectators seating is tiered, covered, has shade screens, and protective plexiglass to give race fans a ringside view of races.
