Hello, January!
t’s a very busy month, and we love every minute of it! We enjoy seeing all of our Winter Texans out and about and hosting events and activities that give us the opportunity to do just that—stay busy.
And just like that, this is the last Welcome Home Winter Texan of the season! It has been a wonderful winter, and we have enjoyed sharing it with you!

I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to stick around, to extend your stay for a few days, weeks, months... or even indefinitely! The fun keeps coming; we keep dancing, dining, and having fun all summer long, and we’d love to have you join us.
We wrapped up our Entertainer Showcase last week in Harlingen and had an incredible turnout. There's no rest for the weary. We roll right into the Winter Texan Expo in McAllen January 16-17. This Expo is in its 31st year, and we serve so many of our Winter Texan friends at the event every year. But we realized not everyone from the Lower Valley can make it, so we were thrilled when the City of Brownsville reached out and wanted to partner with us on a Winter Texan Expo in Brownsville! With great partnerships, anything is possible!
I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to stick around, to extend your stay for a few days, weeks, months... or even indefinitely! The fun keeps coming; we keep dancing, dining, and having fun all summer long, and we’d love to have you join us.

Sharing the Holidays Submitted by Ruth Filz, Palm Gardens RV Park
It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.” ~
Mother Teresa
These words seem to be the way residents of Palm Gardens RV Park in Harlingen live their lives, even more so at the holidays. Residents find fun ways to give to others. When our Bingo Bros were looking for ways to make our Tuesday night Bingo games more fun, they also hit on an idea to help others. If you brought a non-perishable item to one of our recent Bingo games, you received an extra card, and Loaves and Fishes received items to add to their food pantry. Loaves and Fishes has been around since 1991, when they recognized the need for assisting families in Harlingen and upper Cameron County and started the local food pantry. They are part of
the Feeding America nationwide network, which distributes 4.3 billion meals each year.
On a chilly November afternoon, ladies from the Park got together to share friendship and hot apple cider and make some yarn Santa Clauses. When the ladies ventured out for their December Ladies Luncheon, they started at Jason’s Deli, where they enjoyed a delicious lunch. They then stopped by Valley View Senior Living Center to do some Christmas caroling and drop off the yarn Santa Clauses. Hopefully the Santas brightened the residents’ rooms for the holidays. Not sure who enjoyed the visit more, the residents of Palm Gardens or the Valley View residents! Everyone seemed to have a smile on their face when we left.
Since residents started returning to Palm Gardens this fall, they have been collecting teddy bears. We ended up with a total of 114 bears, which were recently dropped off at the Harlingen Police Department. Police officers carry the bears in their vehicles and give them to children who are going through a difficult situation. We’re sure the bears put a smile on the children's faces and let them know someone cares about them. Teddy bears are already being collected to donate in the spring.
I’m sure many of you have heard about--or even have had--an Advent calendar. It’s from the German word “Adventskalender” and is used to count the days of Advent in
anticipation of Christmas. Typically, the calendars have a little door or box that number down to Christmas. Each door or box leads to candy or a small toy or gift. By now, you’ve probably also heard of the Reverse Advent Calendar. It tells you to donate or give something each day, giving instead of getting. Members of the Park used a Reverse Advent Calendar that listed a food item to be donated each day. We ended up with over 20 boxes of food that we donated to the food pantry at the Damien Center in Harlingen.
As you can see, the past two months have been busy at Palm Gardens giving to others, but you can be sure it was all done with a great deal of love. •

Movie Screening of Deep in the Heart at Winter Wildlife Expo
to Welcome Home Winter Texan
A movie screening of Deep in the Heart will serve as a special event at the 28th Annual Winter Wildlife Expo at the Hilton Garden Inn on South Padre Island. The screening will be held Friday, February 9, at 3 p.m. in the Hilton Garden Inn Conference Hall. Admission to the Expo is $12; there is no additional fee to attend the screening.
Deep in the Heart is a visually stunning celebration of what makes Texas unique, its diverse landscapes and remarkable wildlife behavior that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Told through the eyes of wildlife species--ranging from the mysterious blind catfish to the elusive mountain lion--the story follows our ever-changing relationship with the natural world and showcases our ability
to destroy, conserve, and recover wildlife and the habitat we mutually depend on.
Narrated by Matthew McConaughey and featuring state-of-the-art cinematography, this family-friendly film journeys from the highest peaks in West Texas, through our aquifers, rivers, and bays, and deep into the Gulf of Mexico. Deep in the Heart aims to conserve our remaining wild places, to show the connectivity of water and wildlife, and to recognize Texas’ conservation importance on a continental scale.
Christian von Preysing will serve as speaker at the movie screening. Preysing was a camera operator on the production of Deep in The Heart. He's been operating camera traps for years to film elusive species. The ocelots of the RGV
posed a unique set of challenges. The clips he and other crew members filmed were the first high-quality clips ever created of the American ocelot population. Preysing is known locally as a broadcast reporter for KRGV-TV and is a wildlife filmmaker in his free time.

F or a long time, Palm Resaca Mobile Home Park in Brownsville has been one of the best-kept secrets in the Rio Grande Valley. Because the Park is owned by the residents, it is a very special place to live. The combined efforts of all the residents keep the park neat and tidy and their units updated. Fortunately, in this Park, we all work together to make it run smoothly.
The Park is run by an elected board of governors who preside over the Park and make the major decisions as to how the park should be run. Board meetings are held once a month and are open to all residents.

He was also on the Calgary Fire Department for 35 years and reached the position of captain. He also owns Quick Fire, a fireplace business, and owns a 14-room motel in Tipton Iowa.

Weaving Our Ways Through the Days
hew! Well, the fun and festivities of last week’s Yarn Tasting are behind us, but the yarn fun continues! When we are not hosting yarn parties, one of the really fun things we set out to do each day at The Lamb’s Loom is share and learn different skills from each other.
It is one of our goals to help grow the love of crafting to the next generation so they will be encouraged to give and serve in their communities. To accomplish our goal, did y’all know we have a whole list of “Learn 2” classes? Our specially designed, one-on-one curricula are a blast. There are classes in loom knitting, needle knitting, crochet and Tunisian crochet available to everyone. Our “Learn 2” classes are scheduled on a one-on-one basis.
We also offer a Learn 2 Weaving Workshop. This all-day workshop is crafted to introduce the basics of the rigid heddle loom. You will spend the time learning warping techniques, yarns and their application, then weaving your own sampler using various yarns. The rigid heddle loom
is portable; it folds in half for storage and is then easy to transport. The various sizes of looms lend themselves to projects like table runners, placemats, and various clothing projects. The “fabric” possibilities are endless. This workshop makes for a fun-filled yarn day!
Just give us a call and get yourself signed up to add to your own yarn skill set. Everyone is welcome to join in our Sit-n-Knit Room. It is available for you to come by anytime, have a cup of tea, and chillax.
Come and join The Lamb’s Loom fun in person at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen. We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. Updates

I have always enjoyed visiting cemeteries, particularly if someone I once knew is buried there. I know the person is not there, only the remains, but it makes me feel closer to the person to visit the last resting place. I often will read the inscriptions on the other grave markers, as well, and wonder about the lives of those who rest in that plot. I find cemeteries to be peaceful places. Even when others are around visiting their departed loved ones, there is an air of contemplation and respect, so the atmosphere remains serene.
Of course, when a loved one has first passed on, the initial visits to the cemetery are emotionally charged for me, but that doesn’t take away from the tranquility of the place. After tears are spent, a peace settles in, and I almost don’t want to leave and go back to the noise and busyness of the world outside of those gates. But just as we can’t stay in the cemetery all of our lives, Jesus wants us to step out of the
Perspectives Step Out of the Graveyard
graveyard of sin and become spiritually alive. He wants us to rely on the help of the Holy Spirit because, without Him, it is impossible to respond to spiritual things.
People are terrified of quicksand because once you have fallen into it, the more you struggle and the deeper you dig into it. If you let yourself relax, the quicksand itself--believe it or not--will hold you up. That’s what this life can be like apart from Christ. The harder we try to help ourselves, the deeper we dig into the graveyard of sin. But if we rely on Christ, He will hold us up.
In Romans 6:23, we find that death is directly caused by sin. Paul writes, “For the wages of sin is death.” To die in our sin is final; there is no turning back. If we could ask the rich man in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, that is what he would tell us. That’s the bad news. But then Paul goes on: “But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” And that is the good news.
God, rich in His infinite mercy, stepped in to save us through the death of His son, Jesus, who was the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. God does not give us what we deserve, which is eternal punishment. He gives us what we do not deserve, which is eternal life. God could have allowed us to die in our sin, but instead He chose to save us. Isn’t that the greatest news you ever heard? So, let’s step out of the graveyard into the life Christ has for us, which can be a life of peace, despite the turmoil.

Liverpool Legends Coming to McAllen February 9
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan The Grammy-nominated and internationally acclaimed Liverpool Legends will be at the McAllen Performing Arts Center, 801 Convention Center Blvd., Friday, February 9, at 8 p.m. to celebrate the 60th anniversary of The Beatles’ groundbreaking debut performance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Tickets range from $35 to $80 and can be purchased at ticketmaster. com or by calling the Box Office at 956-681-3800.
Liverpool Legends are four talented musicians and actors, handpicked by Louise Harrison--sister of George Harrison--to honor her brother’s legacy and re-create the band that changed the world forever. Experience the complete history of The Beatles, starting with the early mop-top hits, such as “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” “She Loves You,” and “Twist and Shout.” You’ll then take a magical mystery tour down “Penny Lane,” through the psychedelic era of Sgt. Pepper, and, in “The End,” “Come Together” to sing and dance to classics like “Get Back,” “Here Comes the Sun,” and “Hey Jude.”
This one-of-a-kind Beatles show is narrated by Louise Harrison. She was an instrumental part of the promotion
of The Beatles in the early years. With precise attention to every musical detail--along with costume changes, vintage instruments, and special effects--Liverpool Legends will make you feel like you are watching the real thing! Together, these four lads will bring you the complete Beatles experience.
Many tribute acts recreate the sound and the harmonies of the Fab Four, but Liverpool Legends takes it one step further. All four band members have mastered the looks, mannerisms, and thick Liverpool accent, which makes the experience totally authentic. In addition, Liverpool Legends seem to “possess” the personalities of John, George, Paul and Ringo, which make the lighthearted banter with the audience irresistible! •
