The Mexican border town located 10 miles south of Weslaco, Texas, is a popular destination for winter visitors. Winter Texans visiting South Texas flock further south to Nuevo Progreso for a variety of reasons, from taking advantage of affordable dentistry services to pedicures, sampling local fare, and line dancing.
The celebrations, commonly known as Tourist Day, take place front and center, right down the city’s main thoroughfare, Avenida Benito Juarez, which is lined with curio shops, pharmacies, dentist offices, bars, street vendors, nail salons, and eateries.

Welcome Back Winter Texans Day boasts a parade and a ceremony in the middle of the street (closed to vehicle traffic for the day), and Winter Texans are the guests of honor, two in particular for 2023.
Darris and Judy Hable have been volunteering their time in the community for well over a decade, initially delivering food--with friends--to colonias south of the city and raising money for children in need.

The Hables, from Albert Lea, Minnesota, began visiting South Texas in 2004 and have since made Aladdin Village in Mission their permanent home. The couple were selected by the Nuevo Progreso City Council last January to serve as the king and queen of Welcome Back Winter Texans Day 2023.
The day started with a procession across the Progreso International Bridge. Escorted by friends and a contingent from Nuevo Progreso, they were met in Nuevo Progreso by dignitaries, including mayor Joel Eduardo Yanes Villegas and Delegate of Nuevo Progreso Rene Gilberto Rojas Resendez.
“Like every year, we welcome winter tourists with open arms at Villa de Nuevo Progreso,” said Mayor Yanes.
It’s as if the whole city turned out.
Singers and dancers entertained the audience, while a few blocks down the street, scores of school children took part in the parade and vendors offered samples as they thanked patrons directly.
During the ceremony, Darris and Judy were presented with a key to the city, a tradition that had been on pause for over 40 years.
Delegate Rojas addressed the crowd, and his speech was translated. It summed up the appreciation the city has for the Winter Texans: “It is pleasant to understand that with direct support from you, the Winter Texans, the families of the community benefit. We extend gratitude, affection, and total recognition to all of you. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you very much.” •

Chris Moreau - Real Music for Real People About Real Life!
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
hris Moreau is a U.S. Navy Aircrew, combat-decorated veteran with a style groomed from playing dance halls and festivals in Southwest Louisiana and East Texas and with strong style influences from classic country legends, such as Merle Haggard, Gary Stewart, and many more. During live performances, these influences come through in the cover songs Moreau performs--mainly 70s, 80s, and 90s country with quite a few classics thrown in.
Moreau started out playing rhythm guitar and singing classic country with Louisiana local bands. He soon grew his own following before moving to
Branson, Missouri, to play with--and learn from--several talented musicians. Moreau decided to continue his passion by recording and releasing music that is honest and not over-produced. He wanted his music to have a retro-country-music feel. Working with hit songwriters Mark Sherrill “Ole Red” (Blake Shelton), Troy Martin “Baby’s Gotten Good at Goodbyes” (George Strait), and their partners, Moreau added four singles to his music resume. These singles reached the Top 50 on Texas radio and the Top 3 on Louisiana radio and international country music charts. Moreau now plays solo-acoustic and full-band shows from Louisiana and Texas to Florida, Nashville, Branson, and Montana.
Country music always drifts a little right and left of center over time, but Chris is making a strong effort to bring it back--a little closer to center--with traditional instrumentation, real musicians, and real lyrics about real life we can all relate to.
Catch Moreau Tuesday, January 16, at 12:15 in the afternoon at the Winter Texan Expo in McAllen. Wear your dancing boots! •
Spotted in the RGV McAllen
by Eryn Reddell Wingert
S outh Texas offers birding opportunities year-round, not just during the spring and fall migration seasons. This flock of juvenile roseate spoonbills were spotted this past December in a McAllen canal. According toTexas Parks and Wildlife, they prefer bays and marshes along the Texas Gulf Coast but occasionally will move inland. Audubon Texas reports the breed was nearly decimated in the late 1800s by the millenary trade, rebounding by the 1970s. •

Give Me the Adjectives
Things I Have Learned
A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy
T oday’s Wisdom: Do your little bits of good where you are. It’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world . ~Desmond Tutu
I recently received one of those long-anticipated, or perhaps, for some, long-dreaded, notices of my upcoming high-school reunion. My class has faithfully gathered every five years since 1968. Maybe I should actually say about half of my class has gathered. There are a few we haven’t seen much of since graduation night
It has now been 55 years that we have all been loose on the streets. All in all, I’d say we have done a pretty good job of becoming real people. At least none of us have done jail time. I still have class photos from kindergarten. Way back then, we were not much more than little people with potential. No
one had a clue what any of us would become. It would be fun now to take those photos and write over each kid what he or she ultimately turned into. The picture would be covered with “engineer,” “teacher,” “pilot,” “deputy sheriff,” and many more professions.
But those are just notes on what we did. Would that really define us properly? The more relevant task might be to fill that photo with notes like “kind,” “generous,” “great father,” “compassionate,” “hard working” and so forth. Everyone has a job; not everyone earns an honorable adjective.
I am thinking we are best when we live our lives for the adjectives. Nouns don’t have as much attraction to them. We don’t gather friends because of what we do in life. We gather friends because of the kind of people they are in their relationship with those around them.
The odd thing is that many of us went to college after graduation to gain skills to become nouns. I don’t remember one class in college or high school that trained me to become adjectives. Do we have it backward?
This feels like I am getting awfully close to political commentary. I’m not supposed to do that here, so I won’t. But I just wonder what our world would be like if we trained for adjectives, starting in kindergarten. Hmmm.
I’m just sayin’.Bill Ward is a retired health-care administrator from Minnesota and a regular columnist, author, and untalented rock ‘n’ roll musician, playing with the band Night Ryders. He winters at Casa Del Sol in Donna. You can contact Bill by email at bwward@charter.net. •

Make-Along 2024
one way to inspire a few new ideas as you make hats and other items to donate to those we serve. The past years’ themes have had a great variety of birds and butterflies, some of them making the journey south, right along with our Winter Texan friends!
As many have seen, we have planted lots of native butterfly- and bird-attracting plants, so on many days, you can see visitors while sitting out on Peggy’s Porch.
A butterfly may flit through and join you for a little sitn-knit time, or you may spot a hummingbird enjoying the flowers. So we thought it was time to add the flowers to our Make-Along for 2024!
Every month on our website, you can find the new flower we will introduce. Some will be from our native habitat and others just because they’re beautiful. Join us and make your favorite project, like a hat, scarf, blanket, or shawl for our Donation
Chest. Y’all are welcome to purchase your yarn here (That supports our mission, too!), or dive into your own stash and find something fun that works with the theme. We’re adding every contributor’s name to our list and drawing for some fun prizes during Yarn Tasting at the beginning of next year.
Speaking of Yarn Tasting--it begins today, January 10! Come on over for our TENTH Annual Yarn Tasting! (Can you believe it has been 10 years?) This is a great time of yarn fun and celebration of all that has happened over the past year. We always begin with the announcement of the total number of items donated to the Donation Chest the previous year. This year, there will be several other special things shared. We hope you will drop by for a little yarn fun of your own.
Thank you to everyone who joins in on our Make-Along and other projects here at The Lamb’s Loom. The giving of your time and talents helps us send warm gifts of encouragement all over the world. Everyone can join in The Lamb’s Loom fun

by Ace Moore, Winter Texan at Palm Resaca Park Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
P alm Resaca Park (for ages 55+} in Brownsville has the distinction of being a resident-owned Park; therefore, the residents take great pride in keeping the Park beautiful and clean. There is also an extremely active Recreation Committee that promotes activities to provide for the social, emotional, and physical well-being of the residents.
We are very fortunate to have some highly qualified people head up this committee. Cindy Melsby is president of the volunteer group for Camp Knutson on Crosslake in Minnesota. The Camp is nationally recognized for its work to support children with special needs and their families. One important function of this group is to set up decorations around the camp.
“I really enjoy decorating and being creative,” said Melsby. She leads a group of 10 ladies who employ their skills to help beautify our Park. She takes over from B.C.’s Sherry Larratt, who did a fantastic job decorating our Park for over 10 years. “We want to continue Sherry’s excellent work and will have decorations for all holidays, special events, and seasons,” Melsby said. “We want to give the Park an inviting atmosphere to make people feel as welcome as they do at home.” Melsby eventually intends to extend the group’s decorating skills to beautify the pool area and patio outside the Thomas Center.
Wisconsin’s Pam Joblonski was a highschool ministry leader who organized local outings and activities for high school church
Living in Paradise
youth. She also put on seminars for State Farm.
Joblonski has been our Park trip coordinator for the past two years and has “loved every minute of it,” she said.
Some of her outings have been to the Port of Brownsville, the Osprey pirateship cruise in Port Isabel, cruises on the Rio Grande, the Bonita Flats Farm and Vineyard in Los Fresnos and the
Mozna Chocolate tour in Hildago. All these trips were booked to capacity. “The residents have wholeheartedly supported these outings and always come back with a lot of pictures and wonderful memories, “she said.
Calgary’s Shelley Willard owned Revelation Marketing Company, which launched FIDO in Alberta. She is the Park’s walking tour group leader and
also organizes weekly Qigong sessions put on by Gilda Gomez-LaFarga, who also does sessions with AARP. Every Monday morning at 9 a.m., Shelly leads a large group of residents for walks at different places around the area. “We walk for wellness, not only physical but for social connections. We call it ‘friends walking with friends.’”
David Jacobsen, originally from Minnesota but now a Texas resident, organizing the dances in our Park.
“Live music is my passion,” he explained. Jacbosen sounded very passionate about his efforts to get bands to play regularly in our Park and has worked extremely hard to achieve his goal. “It isn’t about the money,” he explained. “I just want to bring some good live music to the residents of the Park.”
We are very fortunate to have a full-time pastor residing in our Park. Pastor John Berglund has been our pastor for the past couple of years.
“I wasn’t sure how it was going to work out,” he explained. “If I could get 30 residents to come out for services, I would commit to being the Park pastor,” he said. John uses stories from today that illustrate biblical truths. “You’ve got to grab their attention,” he explained. Sunday services have been very well attended, with up to 80 residents showing up. Park resident Barry MacDonald from Peterborough, Ontario, described John’s appeal. “There’s this calming feeling that I get with him. People really listen to him.”
“We’re very fortunate to be living in such a beautiful and active Park. It’s a great life, and we have earned it,” said full-time resident Teddy Wheeler, with a big smile on her face.•
by Dena Wade, chaplain’s wife Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
I have always appreciated nature. As a kid, I loved walking in the woods by myself, picking berries or flowers, listening to birds singing, and seeing animal shapes in the fluffy white clouds on a summer day. I enjoyed walking on the beach and listening to the waves crashing on the shore. And I adore sunrises and sunsets and have taken many photos of these. My favorite was watching the sun climb above the clouds from a window on a red-eye flight many years ago from Colorado to Maine. It had never looked so huge and majestic when viewed from the ground! These are what a dear lady I once had the pleasure of serving with at a former church called God-sightings.
Psalm 19:1-4 reads, “The heavens declare the glory of God;
Perspectives
Seeing God in Everyday Occurrences
the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.”
The majesty of God’s creation and the intricacy of His design shows there is a Creator. He has not hidden Himself from us but shows up in so many ways throughout each day, if we keep our eyes open. I could name many other examples of Godsightings: a friend you haven’t heard from in a while calls when you are having an off day and encourages you. The baby in the checkout line in front of you beams you a happy smile. An unexpected check arrives
in the mail when you need it most. You give a struggling mom at the cash register, who realizes she doesn’t have enough money for the diapers for her little one, a few extra bills and are treated to a humble expression of gratitude. You make a hungry man’s day by agreeing to buy him a breakfast sandwich, and you throw in an extra one for lunch. I believe God-sightings are also opportunities to serve others so they see God in us, doing so as if we were serving Jesus Himself (Matthew 25:36-40).
My husband, Bill, and I have learned over the years that it is much more satisfying to serve than to be served. That is why we have been involved in various ministries, most recently as a chaplain and wife at
Mission Bell/Tradewinds in Mission. However, the people we serve here through hospital visitation, one-onone conversation, prayer, bible study, a helping hand, a meal, etc., are very generous and give back to us in ways we never would have asked for. They are as much God-sightings to us as we are to them, and we are grateful for the opportunities to share in the work of Christian Resort Ministries in the RGV for a second year! •
Bill and Dena Wade are chaplains at Mission Bell/Tradewinds in Mission. They are with Christian Resort Ministries, which provides non-denominational worship services in RV resorts throughout the RGV.
