I think you will agree with me that nothing says Christmas and the holidays like Toys for Tots. An official mission of the Marine Corps Reserves, Toys for Tots combines the gratitude we feel for members of our military with the joy we experience, knowing children who might otherwise have no gifts under the tree will receive a doll, a football, an art set, race cars, or a beloved stuffed animal. Ric’s cover story in this issue touched my heart. I want to thank all of you who donate to Toys for Tots and to so many other organizations that bring joy to children in the Rio Grande Valley.
There are only 20 more days in 2024. Although things are hectic around my office and around the Valley, I’m just revving up for all the fun awaiting us in 2025.
I hope you will take advantage of holiday happenings across the Valley, from the Posada in McAllen to the festivities on South Padre Island. Look through our calendar of events carefully so you don’t miss any of them.
We’re just connecting the dots…

Harlingen VFW Post Stands Test of Time
by Ric Cavazos
The Veterans of Foreign Wars post on the Harlingen/San Benito line saw its first veteran on the eve of World War II and got firmly established in the aftermath of the great war.
The 80-year-old-plus facility is roomy enough. It includes long tables and chairs tucked in and ready for patrons when they start streaming in to enjoy comradeship. A bar stocked with cold beers also awaits. This, in VFW jargon, is called a canteen, which is a bar and entertainment area where members and their guests can relax, play games, and enjoy drinks. It’s an important source of revenue to keep VFW posts afloat.
A VFW post like the one numbered 2410 in Harlingen/San Benito is more than just
the kinship shared amongst veterans of different generations and eras. The storage area at Post 2410 is being utilized as a staging ground to gather and distribute donations of toys to children in need throughout Cameron County. It’s all part of the Toys for Tots program administered by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.
“There are some expensive toys in here,” Post Commander Trey Villela said. “Lots of kids will be getting some really nice toys.”
Seeking Help
The holiday toy drive and distribution are just one piece of the community service Post 2410 does every year.
The post is also involved in supporting area food pantries and local clothing drives. Its core mission

VFW Post 2410 has a rich and long history of serving veterans from the World War I era to veterans of the generations that followed. The VFW Post 2410 is located on the Harlingen and San Benito boundary line and was established in 1939. Post Commander Trey Villela (right) unfurls the flag of his post, established to serve veterans living in Harlingen and San Benito.
focuses on veterans supporting each other through tough times and mental health challenges. The post has been utilized to host representatives from county government who specialize in caring for veterans. Information is shared about services county government offers to vets.
Villela speaks of veterans who have been coming to Post 2410 for decades who have “a lot invested in this building.” Until recently, there were doubts about how long the Harlingen-area post could physically stand the test of time. The old wooden structure was decaying, with years of flood damage taking its toll. The big freeze of 2021 only added to these woes. when pipes in the lodge burst and caused extensive water damage. Villela set up a GoFundMe account in hopes that “we could bandage everything up.” The Post’s challenges received coverage from a local television station. The broadcast report caught the attention of Rene Capistran, a veteran and the chief executive officer of Noble Texas Builders in La Feria. Capistran, who heads up one of the larger commercial builders in South Texas, took a look at the post by walking the grounds with Villela and
other vets. Capistran’s conclusion hit hard. “Rene told us the building was not salvageable,” Villela said. “We have veterans that have been coming here for over 20 years. At the end of the day, we need to have something here for them.”
Support Pours In
The contact with Capistran was followed by a visit from U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, who in previous years helped a VFW post in Falfurrias gain funding to make facility improvements. Eventually, Gonzalez would do the same for Post 2410. Meanwhile, Capistran began working on fundraising efforts on behalf of the veterans at 2410. An annual Noble Texas fishing tournament fundraiser led to several companies offering in-kind services to provide the materials, labor, and services to build Post 2410 a new facility at a site just behind the current structure.
The congressman secured a $850,000 federal grant for the Harlingen post. Noble Texas and its associated companies in construction and services pledged to do work with a value of $1.5 million. A new VFW Post 2410 should be completed by the end of 2025. Villela says he

and the vets of Post 2410 were overwhelmed by Gonzalez’s assistance and the generosity and support of Noble Texas.
“We were very fortunate Noble and the congressman came to us and, in doing so, brought awareness to everyone they work with,” he said.
Then it was back to work on Toys for Tots, as Villela took stock of incoming boxes that were stacked up and being prepared for distribution.
“It’s about giving back to the community,” said Villela, a Marine who served in multiple deployments during the Iraq War in the early 2000s. “We’re grateful to be here.”

Winter Texan Spotlight Joy and Purpose in Jam Sessions
by Eryn Reddell Wingert
Photos courtesy of Anna Wiens
Three years ago, mother of four and grandmother of 11 Anna Wiens took up RV living full time, spending six months at Green Gate Grove RV Resort in Mission and the rest of the year in Ontario, Canada.
“It’s been working well for me,” says Wiens, “and I love it!” This RVer is also a musician at heart and through her faith. You might recognize Wiens if you follow the Texas Jammers scene in the Rio Grande Valley. She’s the one with the harp.
“Jammers,” according to the TEXAS Jammers Facebook group, are people who love to play music. The page features videos of regional jam sessions--a staple of entertainment in the Rio Grande Valley--with musicians ranging from banjo pickers to keyboardists and singers to accordionists.
Born in Argentina, Wiens originally took up the accordion. Inspired by South American culture, the harp was a natural leap; it’s the national instrument of Paraguay, which borders Argentina.
A frequent visitor to Paraguay, Wiens was exposed to the harp on a professional level. “I absolutely loved it!”
So much so that at 40 years old, during one of her visits, she took 10 lessons, bought a harp, and took her new passion back to Canada. There, she continued to practice and began performing with friends at local churches and senior homes.
“It was a special joy for me,” says Wiens-about the early years of playing the harp in a small group--and a blessing.
Her music of choice is Gospel, giving
credit to God for her talent and for helping her improve. “It is my way of proclaiming my faith, which is my number one priority in my life.”
The harpist has been positively received into the jamming community, one that Wiens calls encouraging and loving, evident by one commenter who said, “Beautiful Anna Wiens, you do my heart wonders.”
Wiens credits the novelty and uniqueness of her instrument as the main attraction. She jokes, “I could stand on stage and just hold it without playing, and people would still enjoy it.” The harp she plays is her second, a beloved possession custommade and hand carved at a small wood shop in Paraguay.
In early November a video post on the TEXAS Jammers page proclaimed, “ANNA IS BACK!!!” There she was, on a stage, her face obscured by the harp strings, harping and tapping her foot in blue flip flops. In another video post, her face is visible as she plays…and so is her smile.
“Coming here to the Valley and playing is what truly gives me joy,” Wiens says. “I love being home with my family, but this is truly where I feel I have purpose and am the happiest.”

Citrus Theater, Edinburg
Edinburg, Texas
By Eryn Reddell Wingert
The Citrus Theater in downtown Edinburg opened January 17, 1941. Those who grew up in Edinburg might recall the movies they saw there, like Benji or Jaws. The Citrus has been closed, as a movie theater, since 1993. The theater has changed ownership a few times over its 83-year history, most recently in 2021. It has been under renovation ever since and has been re-dubbed The Citrus Live. The new entertainment and event venue is scheduled to open in 2025, according to The Citrus Live Instagram page. This iconic Valley landmark is located at 108 N. 12th Avenue.
Hello Travel Friends Historical Brownsville
Hello Travel Friends,
From the Civil War to space exploration, Brownsville is home to quite a bit of history that may interest you. If you haven’t spent much time down there, you may not know where to go or what’s worth visiting. I sure didn’t, until I took the time to see what Brownsville has to offer. There are even some great options--that you may not know about--for things to do when the grandkids are visiting.
Brownsville is home to the last battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Palmito Ranch in 1865. There is also quite the history between the Mexican side of the border and Brownsville. These, and many other stories, come to life in not one, but three, great museums in Brownsville. Heritage Museum and the Stillman House next door will show you the evolution of Brownsville over the years. There are several rooms with interactive exhibits, and there’s even a museum cat you may be able to spot that hangs around there.
The Historic Brownsville Museum is home to many local artifacts and is inside a 1928 Spanish-Colonial train depot. You’ll even see a full-sized 1872 Baldwin wood-burning, narrow gauge railroad locomotive. If you have a grandchild who loves trains, this one won’t disappoint!
Just around the corner from this museum is the Costumes of the Americas Museum. This small exhibit changes regularly to highlight gorgeous, handmade textiles from all over Central and South America. These incredible pieces tell stories of joy, love, and loss in a unique and beautiful way.
The Gladys Porter Zoo is known for its successful breeding programs and is home to more than 400 animals, including 47 endangered species. The Zoo is currently undergoing an
expansion project and is a great zoo to visit for a stroll “around the world” or to take the grandkids for up-close views of incredible animals. Another great kid stop is the Brownsville Children’s Museum. Here, children can play and learn with many handson, interactive exhibits. They have everything--from crafting to career play--available. This is just scratching the surface of what Brownsville has to offer. Check out what’s new and upcoming from their website at mitteculturaldistrict.org.
The most recent draw to Brownsville is SpaceX. The amount of attention and growth the area has received because of the company and their space exploration at StarBase has been huge. Historic launches and science advancements are happening in Brownsville. We do tours with Rocket
Ranch that many of our Winter Texans have enjoyed the last few years. The incredible thing about these tours is that the information and history are literally changing day to day.
If you’re interested in seeing what new developments are happening in Brownsville, give me a call at the office at 956-687-5115or have your activity director set up a park tour for you and your group. You can also stay up to date on any available tours on our website at welcomehomergv.com. This is a “highlight-of-the-season” tour for many. If you haven’t had a chance to see it, get down there while you can. Get out there and check out the history of the past--and future happenings--right here in the Rio Grande Valley…in Brownsville.

Blessed to be a Blessing
The year is coming to a close, and we are just finishing up the last of 2024 by distributing a few more items in time for Christmas. So many of us are so blessed, it is a privilege to give to the many who are in need of just life’s basics. There have been hats sent to an orphanage just across the border in Mexico and up into the Appalachian Mountains; shawls have been given to many experiencing grief as an expression of God’s care over them. Scarves will be hitting the streets all across the country, blankets will make their way into many homes without heat…and so much more!
We thank God for all the loving hands that have made this possible. What a blessing you are to so many. As the year ends, our prayers go with each item. May they comfort and encourage each recipient and serve as a reminder that they are cared for.
Even though it is the end of the year on the calendar, things never stop around here! We are looking forward to 2025 and all that God has planned. After all, He already knows where all those pretty hats are going. So, y’all keep working away, and the Donation Chest will be ready all year for the blessings you pour into it.
Also, we do want to avert any “yarn emergencies” over the holidays, so here’s our holiday schedule: Until holiday time, we are open for our usual hours, Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Lamb’s Loom will be closed December 22 through January 7 and will open for another blessed year January 8. Mark your calendar, because that’s the week of our Yarn Tasting 2025. Come by and enjoy a little time before the end of the year. We will have the coffee and the Sit-n-Knit Room ready for you!
Join us in the new year, too. as we #stitchitforward together! We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Lamb’s Loom is located at 1102 W. Tamarack Ave. in McAllen. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. Updates and other information are available on our website at thelambsloom.com

McAllen Wind Ensemble Concerts Now Free to the Public Noche Mágica December 20 at the MPAC
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
The McAllen Wind Ensemble, formerly known as the McAllen Town Band, is thrilled to continue its 2024-2025 concert season, offering free admission to the public. This initiative is made possible by the generous support of the McAllen Performing and Cultural Arts Foundation, an organization dedicated to advancing performing arts and arts education throughout the Rio Grande Valley. The Ensemble invites everyone to create new musical memories this year with McAllen’s musical ambassadors.
Gather your family and friends for the next concert, Noche Mágica, Friday, December 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the McAllen Performing Arts Center (MPAC). Audiences can expect an evening of captivating melodies and festive arrangements that celebrate the rich cultural tapestry of the holiday season. A special vocal performance by Alberto Esco will complement the musical Christmas ambiance. Organized in 1973 and chartered in 1974, the Ensemble has a deep-rooted history, sustained by a love of music shared by both its members and the supportive communities of McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley. Inspired by concert bands he had seen playing in Mexican plazas, McAllen businessman Bill Wilson envisioned a community band for McAllen, leading to the group’s formation. With strong support from local music directors and the business community, the group began rehearsing in 1973 and performing in 1974 under Paul Garrett, inaugural music director.
Today, the McAllen Wind Ensemble consists of approximately 75 musicians, from diverse backgrounds, who volunteer their time to rehearse weekly and perform. Under the direction of Music Director Roger Olivarez, the 2024-2025 season will feature four concerts, each bringing a unique theme and repertoire to the community. Remaining concerts include:
• Friday, December 20, at 7:30 p.m. - Noche Mágica
• Tuesday, February 18, at 7:30 p.m.
• Saturday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m.
South Texas Health System is proud to be the 51st concert season sponsor, supporting the Ensemble’s mission to create lasting musical memories. As a nonprofit organization supported by community donations, the McAllen Wind Ensemble also welcomes local businesses interested in advertising or sponsoring programs to help sustain its work. For partnership information, please reach out via email to info@mcallenwindensemble.org.
Concert admission is free, but an electronic ticket is required. Tickets can be reserved on the Ensemble’s website at mcallenwindensemble.org, with assistance available at the door, if needed. •
German Historical Sites in the Hill Country Region
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
German immigrants initially sought sanctuary in Texas from political and religious persecution. Many settled in the Hill Country, where the climate paralleled their native country. German Texans influenced life in the Lone Star State; they brought classical and opera music, breweries, biergartens, and their language. The German legacy continues to influence modern-day Texas.
Castroville:
Landmark
Inn State Historic Site
Originally a home and dry goods store with a rear-detached kitchen, the Alsatian-style structure was transformed into an inn by John Vance. Vance constructed a second story and a bath house, which was the only man-made bath between San Antonio and Eagle Pass, at the time. The inn, called the Vance Hotel, operated until sold to Joseph and Margarethe Courand in 1899. Today, the Texas Historical Commission (THC) Landmark Inn State Historic Site offers eight guest rooms, four suites, and a continental breakfast each morning. Around the site, guests and visitors can take guided tours, fish, swim, or picnic.
Boerne: Cibolo Nature Center and Herff Farm
Established in 1852 by Dr. Ferdinand Herff, the Herff Farm houses the Cibolo Nature Center. The Center contains 100 acres of trails and wilderness for hikes, outings, and fieldtrips. Every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (March 7 through December 12), the center hosts a Farmers Market, complete with tomatoes, radishes, peaches, and an array of fresh-grown products. Residents can also visit the renovated barn, historic homestead, teaching garden, chicken yard, and Cibolo Creek. This National Register property was recently named one of Texas’ Most Endangered Historic Places. As a result, the Cibolo Conservation Corridor is collaborating with partners to conserve the creek and watershed.
Fredericksburg: Luckenbach Dance Hall
One of the best-known Hill Country dance halls, this legendary German-style dance hall opened in 1887. Since then, it has fostered the town’s musical heritage and hosted legendary Texas musicians from Willie Nelson to Robert Earl Keen. Every weekend, Luckenbach Dance Hall holds dances and concerts featuring country musicians and other Texas artists. The small town also hosts festivals, including the Luckenbach Women’s Chili Cookoff and the 1st Luckenbach World’s Fair.
Comfort: Treue Der Union Monument
The Treue Der Union Monument memorializes the death of 36 German men and boys in the Nueces Massacre. In 1862, dozens of Germans camped along the banks of the Nueces River, hoping to cross the border into Mexico. These men opposed slavery and refused to fight for the Confederacy. Confederate soldiers pursued the deserters, killing 19 Germans and injuring another 15. Nine of the wounded were taken outside the camp and executed. A week later, eight more were executed when caught trying to cross
the Rio Grande. Paralyzed with fear, many Germans stayed in the Hill Country. Some managed to escape north or to Mexico. The obelisk is the oldest Civil War memorial in Texas and the state’s only Union monument. The Treue Der Union Monument is a State Antiquities Landmark and is listed in the National Register.
San Antonio: Villa Finale
Villa Finale was the home of preservationist Walter Mathis. Mathis purchased a one-story house in the King William Neighborhood after being displaced from his previous home. He spent two years restoring his house before doing the same for 14 other properties in the district. Because of his revitalization efforts, the King William neighborhood, founded primarily by German immigrants, is now a National Register Historic District.
Mathis was also an artifact collector, and he especially enjoyed collecting memorabilia related to Napoleon Bonaparte. His appreciation of Texas art is showcased in a collection and a wide range of decorative arts, such as Bell silver, furniture, and campaign ceramics. His expansive collections fill Villa Finale. Mathis donated his home and artifacts to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, making the home the first National Trust Historic Site in Texas.
Austin: Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum
Charles Umlauf, son of French and German immigrants, moved to Texas to join the University of Texas faculty. He purchased a property in the Barton Springs area, which he transformed into a studio and garden. There, he sculpted with wood, terra cotta, marble, and bronze.
Umlauf’s style varies, from expressionism to neoclassical realism to lyrical abstraction. His work is housed in collections and museums across the United States, including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. There are more Umlauf sculptures in public locations in Texas than works by any other sculptor. Many of them are in the Sculpture Garden.

Perspectives Real Deal or Fake?
by Paula Key, chaplain’s wife
Back in the Peten Jungles of Guatemala, we had a talking parrot. Rosita was her name, and she loved to talk and was quick to learn. When our stateside pastor was going to come to visit us in the jungle, we got excited and wanted to do something special for his arrival. So we taught Rosita to say, “Praise the Lord, Brother Bob!” Amazingly, she said it just as Brother Bob was entering our house-right on cue! He stopped and looked at her with disbelief and then broke out laughing. Rosita definitely earned her special crackers that day.
Little did we know that Rosita was learning more than what we were actually teaching her. We had another pet, Puddin, who was a precious little black dog that loved the freedom that jungle life gave her to run around outside without cars or roads to endanger her. When it was time to feed her, I’d yell out the back door, “He-ee-re, Puddin, Puddin, Puddin! He-e-e-re, Puddin, Puddin, Puddin!” Puddin would just come-a-running--as fast as her little legs could carry her--to eat her food. Well, it wasn’t long before Rosita decided she would call Punkin. She had worked on her Texas accent until she sounded a lot like me. So Puddin was called to eat many more times than we had actually prepared for her. Puddin was completely duped over and over again. After awhile, I’m sure she wondered as she ran to the house if this was going to be the real deal or a fake. Are we listening to people or teachers like Rosita who sound
like the real deal and offer so much, but we know there’s a lingering doubt in our minds that something is not quite right? Does some of it sound fake or wrong but most of it OK? We are to study the Word of God to “show ourselves approved unto God, a workman that need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth.” (2Timothy 2:15) In this way, we will not fall for fake messengers, as Puddin did. God has promised us in His Word in John 10:3 New Living Translation that we, His sheep, will recognize His voice, and He will lead us. Then, in verse 4, it says we will follow Him because we know His voice. Have we spent enough time with God in prayer to recognize His voice? Have we spent enough time in God’s Word to be able to know His voice? He wants to lead us to the right path. He wants to bless everything we set our hand to do. (Deuteronomy 28:8) All we have to do is ask Him, and He will lead us to make the right decisions that will bless our life and cause us to be a blessing to those around us.
